OH! It's been a while since I drew and posted a new coloring page. I'm learning how to use the graphic program on a different computer and this is the first one I've done on that computer.

I'm cold. It's very cold here in Anchorage, cold enough that it's made local news that it's really cold.

New Coloring Page- Hope

 

Hi Everyone! I know it's been a really long time since I've updated this. So I'll get the pictures up then the explanation why.

So it's 2020. This year started out with some personal issues, then everything else happened. So most of this year has been spent with my family making sure I'm safe because of the ways I'm in the "vulnerable" category. 

I'm not saying it's been a bad year. There has been a lot of good in it. But one of the things that happened because of everything that I had to sort through personally is that I stopped drawing really regularly. Instead, I've been making clothes. A LOT of clothes. I'm coming out of isolation dressed in rainbows and calico and recycled t-shirt dresses. I sewed myself several Halloween costumes. Last year I got a couple overlockers and a new Brother sewing machine and they've been getting used nearly daily. It's been fun. 

I'm not sure I'm back yet, but I do feel more like drawing now. So we shall see!!

So I designed this pattern for a Spoonflower contest. Out of over 400 designs, it was number 15!

Anyway, when I posted the tiled example, someone asked "OH! Will this be a coloring page?"

Rainbow Shawl

I love Darn Good Yarn so much, and while I was buying yarn for my purse, I saw the chiffon rainbow pack, which was unfortunately sold out. I knew right then that I wanted a rainbow shawl made from that yarn.

Darn Good Yarn is a pretty amazing company. Owned by a US veteran, selling fair trade yarn made from recycled goods, in incredibly bright, beautiful colors, a winner in every way.

To make this shawl, I ordered 2 rainbow packs of chiffon ribbon yarn from Darn Good Yarn. The ribbon packs come in different colors, so you don't have to make a rainbow shawl. Pick your favorite color packs. I just really like rainbows. The packs have 4 skeins each. The shawl works up very quickly. It took me 2 evenings to finish it.

In the end, I used 7 skeins, and had about half a skein left of the orange and yellow. Because of the nature of the ribbon packs, your colors may vary from mine, so you'll adapt the colors of the rows to fit the colors you get. Arrange your rainbow so color 6 is one you have two skeins.

My shawl used:
1 purple- color 1
1 red- color 2
1 orange- color 3
1 yellow- color 4
1 green- color 5
2 blue- color 6


A size N hook

Stitches used:
ch=chain
sl st= slip stitch
dc=double crochet

Some quick notes- because of the nature of the yarn, to change colors, I just tied square knots in the yarn and kept working, working the ends in as I went. That made it go fast, and it works because there are knots and loose ends from stitched together ends as well in the ribbon. It adds to the texture and makes it super easy.

When you're winding the center pull balls, make them loose and easy. Keep a pair of scissors handy to trim loose threads.

Pattern:
Using color 1= chain 6, sl st into ring
Row 1: Ch 4(counts as first dc and ch 1), dc in ring, ch 1, dc in ring, ch 1, dc in ring, ch 1, dc in ring (5 dcs 4 spaces)
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1),dc in same stitch, ch 1, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in same stitch, ch 1, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in last dc, ch 1, dc in same dc

Now it's all the same pattern. All the rows start with Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1), dc in same stitch, ch 1, dc in next stitch, until the center loop of the previous row, ch 1, dc in loop, ch 1, dc in loop, continue ch 1, dc in next stitch to the last stitch of the previous row, dc in stitch, ch 1, dc in stitch. So the increases are worked in the first and last stitch of the previous row and in the center.

Rows 3-4 in color 2
Rows 5-6 in color 3
Rows 7-8 in color 4
Rows 9-10 in color 5
Rows 11-12 in color 6
Row 13-14 in color 1
Rows 15-16 in color 2
Row 17 in color 3
Row 18 in color 4
Row 19 in color 5
Row 20-21 in color 6

Fringe- Cut 43 pieces of ribbon 10 inches long. Pull loop of ribbon through first space, pull ends through loop and tighten, skip next space, put fringe in next space all the way around.

Rainbow moon coloring page

This weekend was awfully busy, but it was all working on other things like the new coloring book, some more fabric designs on Spoonflower and a ruffly crocheted bracelet (well, that will wind up being posted here). So this coloring page was part of a project that I was working on a while back. I hope you like it! If you print it on a translucent paper to color, it would be pretty in a window.

Rainbow and umbrella box

This is what I wrote on my personal Facebook page yesterday about the word bumbershoot-
Thinking of drawing a rainy day mandala because right now I'm really stuck on bumbershoot as a very fun word. Apparently it's American slang from UMBrella and paraCHUTE. It's a ridiculous word that always means a certain type of umbrella to me. 

Great big dark umbrellas. Umbrellas that won't fold, compact or ever fit into a purse or briefcase. It won't have ruffles or rainbows. This is a properumbrella, it's going to keep you and another person dry. On a rainy day, braver souls will come to be sheltered under your large umbrella. Other people will be too timid of the seriousness of it. This is an umbrella for the person who really doesn't want to be wet, and wishes they wore galoshes to protect their feet. They will step carefully to keep their feet dry. When it's not raining, these large umbrellas wind neatly, and the stick is long enough to be used as a walking cane. Nobody would dare attack a person holding a bumbershoot because they know it can be used as a weapon.

So a bumbershoot is the most serious of umbrellas, but with a very silly name. To me at least.

The umbrella mandala that I'm working on will hopefully be in my next coloring book, but I may do one here as well. 

Groovy printable sun box

Simple Heart Knot Coloring Page

This one is a very simple heart knot to color. I really like the way it splits warm and cool colors in a rainbow palette! I hope you enjoy it just as much.

Butterfly Rainbow Mandala to color

I want it to be spring already! I'm planning my garden, looking forward to seeing how my strawberries and raspberries come back and talking to my son about our plan for a dandelion recipes zine/ebook. (I'll make a limited number of physical booklets and also sell it as an e-book)

But it's still cold, and wintery and not anywhere near spring.
