Bamboo Blinds

Alas, today is my first day back at college. Which means, my very fun summer is over. Sad face. But, I have the very small number of only 12 credits left. I have debated, made my mind up and changed it back so many times this summer over the question of whether to go full time this semester and finish already or to finish up gently and go half time this year. I'm STILL not sure. I've been going to college for 10 years on and off and I want to be done! However, if I go half time, less stress, I could maybe get a part time job from home, I can defer my student loans a little longer. On the other hand, I could be done in time for Christmas and graduating would be the very best Christmas present in the entire history of the world. It seems surreal that I could actually have a college degree.

On the other hand, going half time would leave me free to do other things, like admire my bamboo blinds and make really horrible videos featuring them. I think the voice over isn't too bad, but the visuals leave much to be desired. But, shaky, dark video aside, I still saved a ton of money.

Humm, maybe the pictures weren't too bad after all. Here are the pictures:

Smooch Review--Northridge Publishing Video

Hi everyone! A couple of awesome things coming your way.

First of all, I'm finally getting a new camera (yeah, feels like forever to me, I'm pretty sure I have at least two new gray hairs since my camera broke), it should be here very, very soon, so hopefully, new pictures galore will be flooding the blog soonish! You might get sick of all the pictures I'm going to take.

Secondly, my sister started a food blog and it's awesome. I helped her think of the name, so you definitely want to go check it out. I can personally vouch for her cooking. I generally go over to her house, go straight to the kitchen table, sit down in a chair, pick up a knife and fork, look up at her with my big brown eyes and say, "Feed me." AND IT'S ALWAYS DELICIOUS. So, run to the The Generous Teaspoon.

Lastly, I realized that I had not yet shared this video of me visiting Northridge Publishing studios and Kristine McKay. I'm reviewing Clearsnap Smooch, which I was great to work with! Once I get the camera, I will get some shots of my projects up on the blog.

By the way, I did emphasize its greatness for detail work, but you can tilt it to the side and get larger areas. I feel a little bit bad for not mentioning it, because someone in the YouTube comments got the impression it was only good for small areas and that's not really the case.

Make It Your Own--Northridge Publishing

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to film with Kristine McKay from Northridge Publishing. It was so much fun to be in front of the camera and I hope I don't seem too goofy, shifty-eyed or nervous. I had a blast, and here's one of the segments we filmed.

Many thanks to them for having me!

And the super-sassy photo of Aubrey I took with her in the skirt (which weirdly printed up backwards on my printer the morning of filming, but I didn't have time to print a second, not-backwards version):

And, a close up of the owl:

Another Speech?

Normally on Fridays I would show you my quilt. But it really hasn't changed all that much from last week. Embarrasingly little from last week.

So, instead, I'm posting another speech. That's somewhat relevant to crafting. It's just some basic graphic design principles, but I thought my readers might enjoy it. Except now you are my viewers. If you watch it. If you want.

Maybe I should just start posting all my school assignments. Because that would at least give me some content while I'm chained to all these school assignments! I mean, while I'm endeavoring cheerfully to learn all that I can from these carefully-crafted school assignments!

Knitting Isn't Just for Grannies--Speech

I'm sorta nervous to post this.

Weird, I know. I basically put myself out here on my blog all the time. I mean, I talk about my toenails and the fact that I've been diagnosed bipolar II and all of that, yet posting this school assignment is giving me butterflies.

Perhaps it's because I talk about the blog in it? So, it's like a blog/speech time continuum loop. I'm pretty proud of the blog and I love interacting with my lovely readers. It's a privilege to know you--it means so much to me to get to know some of you. I love my little piece of the crafting world. It's brought me some of my best friends.

Anyway, here's my first speech from my public speaking class. I got 39/40 on it. It's far from perfect, but I'm still pretty proud of it. Also, I'm a goof ball. And I'm a nerd. Just so there isn't any confusion. Oh, and I totally left it out, but the Craft Yarn Council found in 2004 that 36% of women in the US know how to knit. How awesome is that! Somehow I forgot to say that and I was not about to record the whole thing again.

Tutorial: Fabric Flower Carnation Clip and Pin

It's my first video tutorial. I'm a bit scared to post this, as I'm not too sure how great of a job I did, but I think the essential parts are all there. If you'd like more video tutorials, I could use a little bit of a confidence boost, so let me know what you think.

Anyway, I've seen all sorts of flower tutorials on the web, and I love making them. This is one of those trends that I hope will always stay a trend. I'm bound to be making and wearing them long after everyone else has moved on.

I particularly like these carnation-type flowers. You can see some I made for Aubrey's dress in this post or the above photo, and I've made quite a few more. They work up quickly and all you need is fabric of any type and a needle and thread. I'm making this flower in this tutorial:

Cute, eh? I like to put mine on clips or with pins so they can go on anything and come off just as easily. Sorry for the not too great pictures, but I ran out of daylight yesterday when I was working this, since I had to go over to my sisters house so she could feed me her delicious homemade lasagna. I know, you are all are thinking, Poor, Kara. Yes, I make sacrifices like that all the time. I'm always good to get rid of any extra calories you have lying around. Provided I get to eat them. I'm not exercising for anyone else.

Here's the video. It's not long at just over one minute, so that gives you an idea of how easy they are. You can do the circles just about any size, from about 1" to 4". The larger you do them, the more circles you're going to need to get the fullness.

Once you stitch the rest of the petals on (don't be too picky, as long as they are staying fairly centered, just put little stitches wherever), hot glue a clip or pin or both on and it's ready to wear. I love how the edges fray a little and give it some much texture.

Recap of the San Fransisco Trip (or, what I meant to say eariler)

Ok, this was the stuff I was going to say with my SF photos that I didn't because I pushed the "publish" button instead of the "save now" button in my post-road trip leg- and brain-numbing haze.

We arrived in San Francisco about 1:00 on Thursday. We came over the Bay Bridge, the one in this photo: and headed straight to Pier 39. After nearly dying of shock over having to pay a probable parking fee of $35, we parked the car. We might have been able to find cheaper parking, but you know, it was worth every penny just to be there and get the children out of the metal torture device we call our over-stuffed van.

We walked around the shops at Pier 39 a bit, then decided to take a boat tour. It was so chilly. We knew it was going to be a bit cold, but there was pretty much nothing we could do about it. David told me we wouldn't need the jackets. We finally bought Aubrey this adorable poncho (made in Peru) from a shop at Pier 39, but the rest of us just suffered on an off all day with winds and temps in the lower 60s. Except for David. The man is made from boiled meat or burning coal or has a secret life as a werewolf or something, because he is never cold.

Picture of the boat I thought we were taking. We actually took the boat behind this boat.
The boat had an inside, so that was good. Too bad the windows were basically worthless and so to get a view of anything, you had to go outside (and freeze). We took shifts. Aubrey was really cranky. 90 minutes was probably a bit too long, but the boat ride was awesome. We got to go under the Golden Gate Bridge, which was so cool. David took some video I might share later if I can figure out how to get it to work. He thought he was taking stills, but nope. Still, it's pretty cool. And you can feel like you're bungee jumping off the side of the ship as the camera bounces on the strap.

We ate at Chowder (Chowders?). It was yummy. Clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls. I'd gladly go there right now and have another bowl. After we had cotton candy and ice cream.

We grabbed a hotel for $60 from hotels.com while there. We were planning on driving to Stockton to stay with David's brother, but with the travel time and gas and everything, we thought we'd look around a bit and found a steal. We stayed here. I was so impressed with how clean and well-taken care of it was, despite the 80s wallpaper. It was also on Lombard Street, the most crooked street in the world, but we didn't know that until after we got home. I would to have loved to drive down it if I had known. Driving in San Fransisco was interesting. You have to be rule-conscious to drive in the city. There were all these signs about no left turns at certain times and street-cleaning on certain Thursdays. It's good to have a small car and a small waist if you want to actually park and then exit your car. We had quite the contortionist show getting in and out of our van at the hotel.

Here's the kids at the hotel. They all look exhausted. At this point, they've had too much fun, too little sleep, too much car time and they've been kinda cold all day. We started out with them all on the bed, but Aubrey is not good at sharing and the boys all ended up on the floor and the princess got the bed all to herself. They were full-sized beds. David and I have a King at home. We sure were cozy.

We also left David's cell in the hotel room, but that's another story.

The next morning, we went to the California Academy of Sciences. It was pretty cool. I was expecting a bit more, but it was worth it. The kids loved it.

Aubrey looking down at some sharks and sting rays.

Checking out the stuffed zebras.

Sitting on the front steps waiting for re-entry after eating ham and cheese sandwiches in the car.The roof-top gardens. I was kind of thinking there would be pathways around it, but it was more like a viewing area. Still very neat though. Those guys in the first picture are not tourists. They are workers, doing something to the roof. So, it looks like you can walk over there, but you really can't. There were actually quite a few complaints I had about the experience, but I'm not going to air them out right now. It was a quite neat building and the architecture was stunning. After wandering around for four hours, we were pretty tired and ready to head home. We went over the Golden Gate Bridge, which was neat. I these two shots while driving.
Then we did an impromptu stop at the view area on the other side, which I'm glad we did. Got the previously shared shots of the bridge and a photo of each kid with it.

After that, we headed home, which took about four hours longer than we thought due to all the traffic from San Fransisco to Sacramento. It was like the hive mind decided that they had too many cars on the road and so lets all drive at 2 miles an hour for 40 miles for no reason at all except to enjoy each other's company and drive the tourists batty so they will leave California and never come back and we can have San Fransisco all to ourselves. Pbbbttt. California needs to learn to share.

After getting home and sleeping for eight hours and doing nothing at all for two days, I'm still not recovered. Does tomorrow really have to be Monday?

I made my kids clean the bathroom today.

Actually, I asked David to make them clean the bathroom. We only have one bathroom. With four males using it, it gets grody. I hate cleaning bathroom, especially when I'm not responsible for missing the toilet entirely and then not cleaning up after myself. I never miss and I'm always neat and sanitary. Boys are gross.

Proper toilet seat usage is something that Griffin has decided not to care about. I will go in and the seat will be down, with pee sprinkled generously on it. After gagging and wiping with a Clorox wipe, I have to cross my legs and do a little dance until it dries so I can use it. I will come in to find him going #2, clinging desperately to the rim of the toilet, with the seat up behind him. Lectures are ineffectual. Someday I'm going to have to fish him out of the toilet. I will be in my bedroom, wondering why he's taken so long in the bathroom and then I will go in and he will be in there, arms and legs flailing helplessly. Then maybe he will listen to me and realize that I am actually smarter than him and I do have some method to "irrational" things I ask him to do, like not eating his boogers and putting the toilet seat in the proper position for the task at hand. In the meantime, I wipe the seat every time I need to go.

So, David made them clean the bathroom. This is pretty much how it went. (Warning: whining, bickering kids ahead. I think Xander hits pitches in his whining that only dogs can hear. But there is cuteness at the end). David took this video with his point and shoot camera. Super easy and faster than our regular video camera, so more videos to come.

Isn't she so cute!? "It's yucky, Daddy."

Today she was sitting at the piano, singing. I was laughing so much at her lyrics, "I love Mommy. I like her shoes." Hehe. So dang cute! Only two and already composing music.

What Does a Kitty Say?

I know I need to get pictures of my kids in their Halloween costumes. I got the flu on Halloween and ending up in bed the whole night. It's rumored that Melissa has pics of the kids, but I have yet to see any evidence (cough, cough, send me the pics, Mel!). Anyway, Aubriana was a kitty. Ever since, she has been meowing. It's super cute! She will also sometimes meow if you tell her that she is cute. LOL! Here's some video of her. She has such a personality; it cracks me up!

And just in case you doubted her musical talent, notice that although she doesn't say all the words, she does sing the tune. She also enjoys the ABC's and says quite a few of the letters.

A Hodgepodge post

I wanted to update on the 2peas situation, since someone asked about it. For some reason, their server was blocking a slew of peas' IP addresses. It was seemingly random. After I talked to them, they told me to call my internet service provider, which I didn't do, because I knew it was on their end. A few days later, I could magically get on the site again. Spiffy. ;) Actually, I do really like it there. They like my cakes.

Yesterday, I was putting a bracelet on Aubriana, standard procedure for whenever we leave the house or I get her a new outfit. She looked up at me and said, "Bracelet," and held out her wrist. I could not believe it! She enunciated each letter too. I got her to say it later at Melissa's house, so I'm not crazy and she's said it more than once. It's sooooo cute! She loves her pretty bracelets.

The other day I heard Maxton and Xander playing. Xander was proposing some exciting senario involving dinosaurs. Maxton was more skeptical. He said, "I don't think we have the experience for that." Brawhahaha!

In other news, here's a recent clip of Griffin being a total goofball. I just learned how to do this. Yay!
