Fish In a Bag Soap Tutorial

Monday, February 8, 2021

Materials:
Clear Glycerin Soap
Plastic Fish (ours are from Oriental Trading Co.)
Microwave Safe Bowl (Bowl with a pour spout works best.)
Microwave
Kitchen Knife
4"X8" Clear Poly Bags at least 1.5 millimeters thick.
Twist Ties
Rubbing Alcohol in a small spray bottle.
Chopstick or Skewer
Ice water in a large/ medium bowl.
Fragrance Oil (optional)
Ribbon

1. Cut soap into several small square pieces.

2. Place cut pieces in a microwave-safe bowl and melt in the microwave. (45 seconds on high then 10-second intervals until melted.)

3. This step is optional, if desired add the fragrance oil according to manufactures instructions and stir.

4. Carefully pour the melted soap into a clear plastic bag. Fill the bag about 1/4 full. Use caution not to get soap down the inside of the bag side.
5. Once the soap has been poured place the bag into the bowl of ice water. This will speed up the hardening process.

6. Quickly spray inside the bag with alcohol a few times, to pop any small bubbles that may have formed in the soap

7. Hold your fish so that it will drop belly down and carefully drop in.

8. Use the chopstick/skewer to quickly adjust the fish as desired.

9. Let sit in ice water for a bit longer and then remove.
10. Wrap with a twist tie, this will allow the top of the soap to form correctly.
11. Set aside in an upright position to harden.

12. When the soap has hardened, take off the twist tie to let the alcohol air/dry out.
13. Tie bags closed with a ribbon.

You now have a fishie soap in a bag! Or several of them actually! We added a cute little hangtag for an added touch. You can pick up that free printable here. Hope you enjoy making these as much as we did! PLEASE let us know if you do!

Notes:
*Once we got the hang of how to do it we were able to do several at a time.
*Soap can be remelted if it starts to harden before you finish pouring.
*We used a 5 lb. block of soap and were able to make 24 fishie soaps.
*We got our soap from our local Joann's Store with a 40% off coupon.

tiny succulents

Here is a most adorable little plant that will go almost anywhere.

Simply drill a hole in the center of each cork being careful not to go through the sides or bottom.

Next, on the cork place a single initial or small word (mom). On the above I used the citra solv transfer method (you can google that) which I did not really care for as the letters were to light for my liking. On the "C" below I used a rubber stamp (picked up in the dollar bins) and StazOn ink pad so it won't run.

On the opposite side of the initial glue (E6000 is the BEST!) a small magnet.

Add a tiny bit of soil, and a tiny succulent. Add bit more soil on the top of your succulent then some moss. I soaked my moss in water for a few minutes to make it more manageable. Just poke the moss right in where you want it with a tooth pick.

Now water and it's done! A tiny bit of water every 10-14 days will do. Use a dropper or a gentle squirt from a spray bottle to water. It's tiny!

Here they are on my lovely little thrift tray.
I actually have my "C" on the fridge and I love looking at it each time I go in the kitchen. The others were for my mom and sisters in law for Mother's Day. I think they would make super wedding favors or teacher gifts. How about you? What would you do with them?

The blank corks are from Inventive Gears on etsy.

DIY Halloween/Fall Soap Favors and Printables

These are so simple you'll want to make tons! They are fun for the kids too! So we've got a tutorial for ya! Be sure to grab the printables below too!

What you need ↓.

Clear Glycerin Soap ($10 Dollars for 2 lbs.(makes about 15 soaps) at Michael's - used 50% off coupon to get it for $5 yeah!)
Cupcake Pans ($1 each at Dollar Tree we got 2 - not sure if you want to use your baking one's or not. UPDATE - You do not want to use your baking pans because your food will taste like soap after that.
• Small Toys to fit in cupcake pan. (We got balls and bracelets at Target.) Caution - Small toys are a choking hazard. These are not intended for small children.
• Soap Scent if desired. This is optional. I like my soap to smell good!
• Med. to Large Microwave safe Measuring Cup
• Small spray bottle of alcohol. (not pictured)

1. Place small toys of your choice into each cupcake spot.

2. Cut soap into small cubes and put in microwave safe measuring cup. Melt in microwave according to the directions on the package.

3. Once fully melted add sent if desired per instructions on scent packaging.

4. Pour melted soap into cupcake pan right over the toys. One of the fun parts! Try to only pour soap if you have enough to fill the entire cup. If there is not enough to fill the cup but you still some left you can remelt it later when you add more.

5. Quickly spray a couple of times with the alcohol to pop the small bubbles.

6. Set aside and let cool. Try not to move them when they are setting up. They should look something like this at this point.

7. Next I like to place them in the freezer for a few minutes. This seems to make them pop out of the pan fairly easy. Do not leave them in the freezer too long or they will get condensation on them when you pull them out. It is okay if that happens it just takes a long time for them to dry.

8. Turn pan over and push on each cup on the back side to pop them out. They will then look something like the photo below. These have that condensation I was talking about. They are actually pretty clear when that dries.

And here they are again on the other side. Notice the toys are sticking out. That does not bother me at all but if it does you then you may want to select smaller toys. (Condensation again UGH! Dry already would ya!)

9. Once that condensation dried and they were ready to handle we wrapped them in plastic wrap and sealed them with a Halloween label! So cute!
Elements for labels from Just so Scrappy.

At my kid's school they actually do not celebrate Halloween so we used fall labels instead and will be gifting one to each classmate and Teacher of course! How fun! These would even be great for Christmas with Christmas toys! Maybe we will post some Christmas labels in the future! What do you think?

Below are the printable labels for you to use! Print them on full sheet label paper and punch with a circle punch to make labels or print on card stock and punch to make hang tags or cupcake toppers! You could also use a circle punch with a scalloped edge. So pretty!

Hope you enjoy them please let us know if you do!

For each printable below click on the image to enlarge, click it again to enlarge even more, right click and save to your computer. Then open and print.

And the fall labels! Enjoy!

Bottle Cap Necklace Tutorial

Monday, August 30, 2010

These bottle cap necklaces are great for boys and girls and they make terrific party favors like the ones we did HERE. I'm telling ya they love 'em!

Before we get started here are a few notes about the bottle cap artwork. The artwork for this tutorial needs to be either printed on a color laser printer or at a local photo lab (like pictures) and it needs to fit in a 1-inch circle. Do not use an inkjet printer!!! The ink will run! You can create art on a photo editing program like Photoshop or you can purchase pre-made designs. A very BIG Thank You to Sincerely Susan for providing all of the bottle cap art for this tutorial.

Materials:

Bottle Caps Drill (not pictured

1/16 Drill Bit

File or Sandpaper (not pictured)

Bottle Cap Art (have this printed ahead of time)

1 inch Circle Puncher

Glue Stick

Diamond Glaze

Small Split Rings

Ribbon and/or Ball Chain Necklace

1. Drill a small hole on the edge of the cap using a drill and the 1/16 drill bit. File or sand the backside of the hole as the edges will be rough and sharp. Set the cap aside.

2. Punch out the artwork using a 1-inch circle puncher.

3. If the artwork was printed at a photo lab peel off the back layer of paper. This will allow the glue to adhere better. Skip this step if the artwork was printed on a laser printer.

4. Apply glue to the backside of art with a glue stick.

5. Stick art to bottle cap. Ensure that artwork is aligned with the hole that was drilled earlier. Wouldn't want it upside down.

6. Apply Diamond Glaze, use the tip of the Diamond Glaze to move glaze around to cover the entire area. Squeeze out more as needed. Pop any bubbles with a straight pin and allow to dry. This will take a while (overnight). Do not shake Diamond Glaze as this will cause unwanted bubbles.

7. Once dry add a split ring through the drilled hole and add a ribbon or ball chain. Note: You can carefully put a flame to the ends of the ribbon to prevent it from fraying. It will slightly melt the ends.

All Done!!! Simple enough right? Enjoy and let us know if you try it.

Mario Bros. Printable - Bubbles

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Okay so I also made a Mario Bros. bubble wrapper to go along with the play dough wrapper from yesterday. These bubbles were also found my local Dollar Tree. They are a smaller 3 oz size, but not too small, perfect for our favor bags. And 3 for a buck!
What do you think? Better?

The existing labels came right off. We wrapped these around the bottle and taped at the back. So easy!

And here they are for you! For some unknown reason I was unable to get more on the page. Sorry technical difficulties. Click on the photo below to enlarge then click on it again to enlarge even more, then right click on it and save to your computer and print.

Kids! You gotta love 'em! Check out this conversation from last week I had with my son the day before the last day of school. On our way out the door for school!

Son: Mom, Mrs A. said us kids that celebrate our birthdays in the summer, can still have a birthday party in class sometime during the year.

Me: Son! Tomorrow is your last day of school!

Son: But Mom, we can just take a little treat and that's it.

Me: And when are we supposed to do this? Today? Tomorrow? And tomorrow is a half day!

Son: Oooookayyyyyyy. :( Neeeeverrrrrrr minnnnnnd. :(

Me: (Sigh) Let me talk to your teacher and see what she says.

I couldn't say no he looked so bummed. So I talked to teacher and the next morning we took donuts with sprinkles of course. And there I was at the last minute trying to get together favor bags for 23 kids! Good thing the whole family pitched in!

One of the things we put in was play dough. I found these at my local dollar tree. 8 for a buck! We're on a budget here.
I made Mario Bros. wrappers and wrapped them right around the existing label and taped.
What do you think? Not bad for last minute eh?

I've included the wrappers/labels below for you to use! Click on the photo below to enlarge then click on it again to enlarge even more, then right click on it and save to your computer then print. Prints on a full 8.5 x 11 sheet.
