Running on fumes

One of the side effects of having ongoing medical problems is the impact on one’s motivation to do anything. Since the end of last year I seem to have lurched from one minor illness to another, and it has been very wearing.

Luckily, I've been able to go to regular games at Dice on the Hill and to take part in the weekly Virtual Wargames Club Zoom meeting, and this had helped me to stagger on. However, I have now come down with a really unpleasant virus that seems to have been sweeping across the UK since the start of the year. The symptoms are a fever, continual tiredness, a runny nose, a sore throat/croaky voice, and a persistent and unpleasant hacking cough that often goes on for several minutes at a time. The latter can be so bad that it wakes the sufferer up multiple times during the night and contributes to the feeling of continual physical tiredness, mental lethargy, and an inability to concentrate.

Over the past few days matters seem to have come to a head, and I feel as if my fuel tank is almost empty and that I am running on fumes. I hope that this marks the point at which the virus has done its worst and that from now on things will gradually improve. However, until they do, I will be keeping my head down and concentrating on getting better as quickly as possible. I will continue to blog as and when I feel up to it, but don't expect anything earth-shattering to appear here for some time!

  2. My sympathies Bob - my wife and I have had a similar virus (her worse than me). It went on for weeks and left us both drained. Very unpleasant.

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! This virus seems to be a right b*gg*r to shake off. I seem to be popping paracetamol several times a day in the hope that it will help mitigate the worst of the symptoms.

I hope that you and your wife get better soon.

      All the best,

      Bob

Cheers! I find that sleeping seems to help … along with the occasional daytime nap!

  5. Get well soon. I believe a version of the same thing is making the rounds on this side of the pond. I had something similar, but with somewhat milder symptoms a few weeks back. Peaked after about a week, but it was another week before I fully recovered.

    1. Mark Cordone,

Cheers! I understand that this virus has been quite widespread and has affected a very large number of people across the world. It sounds as if you've been relatively lucky to only have had it for a fortnight.

      All the best,

      Bob

100 days! When I told my wife she was not at all happy to find out that it might last that long. Hopefully we will be over ours sooner than that.

      All the best,

  7. Bob, I'm very sorry to read that you are suffering such problems. I think I had a similar virus in December and I experienced the same, almost complete loss of interest in wargaming/military history &c. for weeks before slowly getting back to my old self. I hope you will soon regain your enthusiasm and motivation, as they will help you to recover from the physical malaise. Best wishes, Arthur

Cheers! Im sorry to read that you’ve also had this virus. It’s a real b*gg*r … and made worse by the fact that you might wake up feeling quite well and then - an hour later - you feel awful again.

I hope that Sue and I will get better soon.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Tim,

Cheers! My cough is bad at times, but my wife’s one is truly awful. What makes it worse is the fact that it starts without any warning and seems to affect her whole body. I hope that your wife gets better soon.

      All the best,

      Bob

  10. Bob -
If it's not one thing, it's another, usually both and something else besides. You have had the most appalling luck, but have borne up under it with humour, if not always cheerfulness.

    1. Justin Penwith,

You certainly seem to have had a bad spell on sickness, and I hope that you are over it now. If it’s the same virus that we’ve had, you’ll know what a real b*gg*r it is to live with. I hope that your week of rest and recuperation will leave you feeling totally refreshed.

      All the best,

This virus really is difficult to shake off, and all my usual remedies don’t seem to have anything other than a marginal effect. Hopefully we will be over it soon.

    1. Rob Young,

The most difficult aspect of the symptoms is the mental lethargy that the virus visits upon its sufferers.

I’m still thinking about going to Salute … but will not make a final decision until a week or so beforehand.

      All the best,

      Bob
