What were you thinking?

Barbara Silkstone, Author

SYNOPSIS:
Be aware, this is not the Peter Pan story you want your kids reading, it is clearly intended for adult readers. Yet it appeals to the childlike part of us that loved the classic original stories. Combine that childlike love with modern politics and technology, and you get this smart, snarky, hilarious mystery. The story is richly developed and leaves you guessing until the very end. I am liking this grown up version of Peter Pan even more than the original.

This review is from: Wendy and the Lost Boys (Fractured Fairy Tales by Silkstone) (Kindle Edition)
When a deathbed promise to a friend leaves Wendy Darlin, feisty Miami real estate broker for billionaires, trapped on a super-yacht with Ponzi-king, Charlie Hook, she’s forced to join him on a quest to recover his hidden treasure. Along for the danger-filled adventure are an undercover SEC Investigator, who kindles a spark in Wendy with his ‘Johnny Depp’ eyes and Hook’s young female helicopter pilot who befriends Wendy as they sail the high seas, one step ahead of modern day ruthless pirates.

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?
As the power behind Peter Pan, Wendy Darling was always one of my favorite heroines. She mothered a troop of motherless boys and brought them safely home after dealing with the evil pirate, Captain Hook. Wendy stood toe-to-toe against that ruthless villain and was even willing to walk the plank in defiance of him. I rewrote Peter Pan giving it a modern spin as I do with all my Fractured Fairy Tales.

Comedy is the best way to cope with the dark side of life. And no matter who we are we all get hit with a shadow now and then. If I can help my readers laugh at pirates and bullies then I will have accomplished my goal.

I was Wendy from the time I was seven years old. I cooked for my younger sisters, dressed them, iced their wounds, and when I could I protected them from our abusive mother. I kept our dark family secret from even my best friends.

As the oldest child it fell to me to protect my sisters and to take away the pain. I discovered the power of silly. I would gather my sisters in our bedroom and mock the cruelty we’d endured at our mother’s hands. We would quietly giggle in the darkness. Three misplaced princesses looking for a proper fairy tale.

Looney Tunes became my survival guide. I taught my sisters to laugh as the anvil came crashing down on Wiley Coyote's noggin or our little blonde heads. I showed them how Daffy picked himself up and started all over again after each smashing blow. We learned that nothing was permanent. It never hurt as much if you could crack a joke about it later.

I love bringing laughter and snark to difficult situations. My heroines are each strong in their own unique way. They are survivors who can laugh at the lumps. As an author, I treasure being able to share the wickedly delicious humor found in giggling in the dark with my readers, my siblings, my friends.
