You Know Where I'll Be Found

No surprises: Lollapalooza 2010 = Green Day, Soundgarden, Phoenix, Social Distortion, MGMT, New Pornographers, Rogue Wave, Metric, Matt & Kim, Stars, Morning Benders, and many many more. It would be hard to miss this one. Tix are already on sale for the festival August 6-8 in Chi-town. Cubbies are in town so it would make for an unforgettable weekend!

But Lady Gaga?! Gack.

Television Dreams of Tomorrow

First the album. Then the Broadway musical. Soon the movie!

Green Day's American Idiot musical might be turned into a movie thanks to Tom Hanks and ABBA. Negotiations are hot and heavy.

How punk can you be if your album is made into a musical and a movie based on the musical? I bet John Lydon wishes he had this kind of payday ahead of him.

You're Only Looking For Someone To Love

GirlfriendBerkeley Repertory Theatre, the visionaries that brought you the Broadway-bound Green Day's American Idiot, has released many more details on its upcoming Girlfriend, a musical built around Matthew Sweet's landmark album.

Meeting in homeroom. Holding hands. Cheering from the stands. That awkward first kiss. In the world premiere of Girlfriend at Berkeley Rep, boy meets boy. It's an eternal story turned upside down, a dual-Romeo duet that's innocent - and Sweet. "Girlfriend is the breathless testimony of a fool for love," raves Rolling Stone, "a rock ‘n' roll valentine that delivers subtle wisdom with an exhilarating kick." Fall in love with the boy next door at Girlfriend.
The music is so universal that I think this has great potential. Girlfriend is one of the most important albums in my life so why would I think otherwise? I haven't heard a peep about it from Matthew Sweet himself. Green Day never hesitated to embrace the musical. Matthew Sweet - Broadway bound?

Girlfriend opens April 14 and runs through May 9.

The Sirens of Decay Will Infiltrate the Faith Fanatic

Thanks in part to Green Day, your 21st Century Breakdown begins May 15.

Green Day - 21st Century BreakdownLike its predecessor, "21st Century Breakdown" has a narrative structure, telling the story of a young couple, Christian and Gloria. The album is divided into three acts -- "Heroes and Cons," "Charlatans and Saints" and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades" -- and includes tracks like "21 Guns," "East Jesus Nowhere," "Before the Lobotomy," and "Restless Heart Syndrome."

The first single, "Know Your Enemy," will go on sale digitally in April.

My Generation is Zero

A taste of the new Green Day...

Hmm, dunno. They are all over the place on this one. I loved American Idiot and they've certainly come a long way since songs about masturbation (which no doubt have their place), but upon first listen, it almost sounds like Green Day doing an adult contemporary parody of themselves. Perhaps in its full context I'll change my mind.

How Long Now?

U2 announced a gimmicky new online game to play for a chance to win a trip to see their last show of the Vertigo tour in Hawaii. Nice prize certainly, but who has the time to go lyric hunting on a variety of websites in a likely ruse to drive up traffic to U2-supporting advertisers? Blah.

In other news, the U2-Green Day collaboration The Saints are Coming gets the video treatment and the other new tune from U2's upcoming compilation (out Nov. 21 just like every other compilation) is called Window on the Sky and is being promoted to rock radio in a couple weeks.

So Quick To Criticize

As I mentioned yesterday, 'tis the season. Not only will we see plenty of holiday albums, we'll also see the arguably unnecessary best-of releases. REM did it right by adding lots of extras. U2, on the other hand, has a new compilation coming out, which is ridiculous if you think about it. Their last compilation included everything from 1990-2000, including All That You Can't Leave Behind. They've released ONE album since (which was not their best), yet they feel the need to release a new compilation. Ok, true, there will be two new songs on there along with 16 of their "best known songs," but one song is their collaboration with Green Day that you can download the live version of now or wait until the end of the month to download the studio version. I suppose for the casual fan who doesn't own every U2 album and didn't want to plunk down the cash for two previous compilations might be interested, but for the real fans, it just makes very little cents sense to buy the new compilation in this iPod/iTunes age.

By the way, does anybody else find Atomic Bomb's Yahweh as insufferable as I do? Last I heard it, it included every annoying thing about U2 complete in one song.

Every Artist is a Cannibal, Every Poet is a Thief

U2 is working with Rick Rubin on their new album. First Neil Diamond, then Dixie Chicks, then U2. Sure, makes sense. That Rubin gets around. U2 is also collaborating with Green Day on a charity single.

Billboard and u2.com have more details.
