A Lucky Strike!

A pic taken on the day to show my happiness!
Back in January I picked up today's R.A.F treasure- A lucky strike indeed! This darling little ciggie case came from one of my favourite dealers, and even though I can't stand the whole smoking malarkey (horrid stuff), I just couldn't leave it behind. It must have been magnetic or something, because once I had it in my hand there was no way it was leaving it again until the case was safely at home in my possession! I'm very surprised that I didn't dilly dally over the price (which actually was very reasonable), but then again, what's inside the ciggie case is priceless in my eyes!

Nothing extraordinary about this cushioned shaped case really- has a lovely feel to it, though, and it fits nicely in your hand. I can just imagine the raffy chap reaching to his pocket for this case... perhaps whilst leaning jauntily against a hut and wearing a careworn frown and a slightly dishevelled curly hairdo.... let's call him Rex too! Oooh no, Laurie....no, Rex... Oh it doesn't matter, he's not real!

Once I've replaced the elastic I'm thinking of using it as a card case just because I want to show it off- I'll be giving everyone cards. OK, I won't as I don't have a card, but if I did naturally I would!

Anyway, do you want to see what's inside? Yes of course you do...

Ta daaaaaa- tis a name and date *squeal* scratched into it!

FL. OFF. FARRIMOND. 1942

How marvellous eh! I wonder what became of him?

So, here's to you Mr Farrimond- thank you for scratching your name in your ciggie case!
♥♥♥♥♥

Have a wonderful weekend chums!

R.A.F Friday Christmas Special.

Welcome one and all to a very special edition of R.A.F Friday. Ok, so the only reason it's special is because it's the last one before Christmas and I have raided my room to dig out all the Christmassy related items especially!
I must confess that I wasn't planning to show what is about to be shown- I was adamant that the thing I was going to show was connected to a particular RAF chappy, but my brain played a cruel trick on me and I got all mixed up with a similar thing that was sent to a chappy in the RAF, and needless to say, I didn't buy the latter (was expensive!). However, I shall try and upload the thing I wanted to share nearer Chrimbo, because it is rather interesting RAF related or not!

So to me stuff....

First up, a couple of Christmas cards...

I bought these back in the summer (along with the bundle below)

And the Transport Command CC is dated 1945 inside.

***

The Next is a small bundle of photo's with a Christmas Greetings card. They are all related to a one,
LAC W. M. MacGillivray.
 " from 1362225 LAC. MacGillivray
Royal Air Force.
To My Darling sweetheart Margaretta with all my love & sweetest kisses
your very own sweetheart
xxxxxxxxx Willie xxxxxxxxxx
My Good wishes for a very merry xmas & a happy New Year!
***
-Faith-
God grant you faith
when storms arise
To see the light
In troubled skies.
God lead the way
And calm your fears
His love your sunshine
through the years,

Willie  xxxxxxxxxx"

Willie is bottom left. 1941

(this one has some writing on the back but I have no idea what it says!

I'm not sure if this is Willie, (sort of looks like him) but he came with the rest and I would hate for him to go unnoticed!

***

Another item I have been keeping back ready for this merry month is this wartime booklet of Carols

(Nice to see a WAAF for a change!)

One of my favourites is "Good King Wenceslas"
(use to love to sing it at school when I was diddy dot!).

***

And my final offering
is my latest purchase....

I bought this chappy in London (fancy). I've had to crop him a bit as it's a fairly large portrait- not huge, huge just too large for the scanner! I don't know about anyone else, but I adore tinted photos, and I think the seller could tell that I had fallen in love with him when I enquired after the price! I don't know what I would have done if she hadasked for more than I could have given her- well, one thing I do know, I would have been very miserable if he was to be too much dosh for little Cinders here!
Anyway, he resides with me now, and I have named him Bert as I think it suits his kind face. : P
(what a nutcase eh!)
Well, that's all I could muster for this edition, as I can't think of anything else Christmas related... s'pose the last one isn't at all related to Christmas, but hey, I couldn't wait another week without showing him off!

Happt RAF Friday one and all,

Mrs Pickup's- a couple of snaps...

This wasn't the planned RAF Friday, but I'm feeling rather 'meh' today, so I have dug out a couple of pictures instead (yeah I know it's not much!).

And for once (Note that I'm merrily jigging away in a happy fashion here) the lovely original owner annotated her darling snaps. "I like you lady very much indeedy".

I don't even need to consult people in the know for possible dates, as she noted that too...All this information is nearly too much for me to handle. Well, perhaps that's a little over the top, but nonetheless it's nice for once to at least know their names. Mind you, it still leaves me wondering what became of them all.

"Group on the steps at Mrs Pickup's.
Back- Dorothy and Bill.
Centre- Jack, Mona, Myself and Leslie.
Front- Roy, Bertha, Douglas, Basil and Alan.
July 1941"

(just look at all those glorious names!)

"Leslie Shuttleworth and myself taken on the steps of mrs Pickup's.
July 1941"

(I'm guessing she liked Leslie!)
They look such a contented bunch in these snaps- happily sitting on each others laps, and with the girlywigs trying on their uniforms.
I presume these lads were billeted with the rather amusingly named 'Mrs Pickup'- that or the girls were.
And it is here, on Mrs Pickup's steps, that these little treasured moments were recorded on film.
***
And one last photo....

Isn't he gorgeous?! Well at any rate, I think he is. Mammy says he's a "really beautiful boy"! But oh so young. (You know, if you disagree I am going to think there is something wrong with you!) Unfortunately I know nothing about him. Cracking teeth too- with teeth that white he would be very handy in the blackout ;)
Haha, that was a bit random after exclaiming to know nothing about him- ah well!

This chap came from the same dealer (one of my favourites). I can never pass their stand without checking out the photos. I think such an occurrence has become noted by them because they always say “I’ve topped the photos up…”! Am I really that predictable… well, obviously, yes!

Well folks, thats all from R.A.F Friday this week....
I will leave you with this little ditty from one of my favourite george Formby films ;)

TaTa all and have a grand weekend wherever you are,

Sincerely Yours

Love Is In The Air...

These are my latest photo finds and were found last week. The lady said they were attracting a lot of attention form the men folk, but that they were too ‘wedding-y’ for the likes of them….Perhaps too pretty, pretty for the manly man?  Well, it’s their loss I say! Any roads, they are now safely tucked up in the TBT archives.

How can you resist a wartime wedding and one with dashing chaps in the RAF at that- (see photo no.4 for said dashing chap- the one on the left with the moustache...)

Cute, eh!

At a later date, some kind soul (thank you whoever you are!) had taken the time to write some information about the pictures… my only complaint is that they didn’t tell us about the bride and the date of the wedding. It's all very well saying WWII, but the war took up quite a few years!

I’m rather liking the checked coat and the Bridesmaids dresses with their ‘hey nonny, nonny’ hats!

"My Shack"                           "Thacker centre taken in India WWII"

I love how the photo on the left was obviously taken outside somewhere, but they still thought is necessary to use a backdrop, and a rather wrinkly backdrop at that.... does make me chuckle!

Also in with the wedding photos were two photos of L.A.C. Thacker out in India (above),
and this one of his wife and what I presume is their diddy dot outside the Anderson shelter. I’m rather pleased with this photo as it’s my first original snap of an Anderson… simple things. ; )

"Taken Home Harborne"
And here is is one last wedding photo for good measure....

All in all I think this was a rather nice little find, and thank goodness for all those manly men for leaving these little treasures for me to buy instead!

Cheerio
Here's to the next time...

RAF Friday- The Rings

More Sweetheart jewellery, but this time RINGS!

I acquired this one in Pickering. I was surprised no one bought it as I found it in a nearly empty cabinet after the war weekend- ah well their loss eh!
On the up side... I found it and its now in the TBT collection, but on the down side... its too big.
As you can imagine I'm heartily devastate, and if you have been following the previous RAF Fridays (?) then you will already know that I'm rather fond of these Perspex beauties! Perhaps it's best that it doesn't fit me, just in case I lost it or broke it....

The above ring was one of the things on my wish list and is my latest treasure- I shall be wearing this ring with great pride as I'm sure the original owner did. I cant get over how tiny the wings are- they really are teeny tiny! It's a silver one (stamped 925) with perfect enamelling too. : )
Oh I'm a happy bunny- they never fail to put a smile on my face.

I also have plans to make my own ring from a RAF button, but I need to do a bit of designing and trial some settings first. You shall, no doubt, see the results at some point!

Here's to the weekend...

Here Comes The Bride...

Friday, 17 August 2012

RAF Friday- Here comes the bride...

Yes I know, I’m a bad blogger- how could I miss RAF Friday last week I hear you cry…or is that my imagination again?…. I thought so!
Well ducks, I was just being grumpier than usual and it was one of those days/ weekends where everything seemed to be going wrong. Well after my week long blog vacation, I’m back, and I’m ready to start shoving more of my beloved treasures into the window of your computer screens! (It’s a sign of happier times in the house of Tupney)
I gave the option of snaps on general RAF, or wedding pics for this/last weeks RAF Friday and the majority ruled for the wedding ones, so weddings it will be.
I still can’t believe you turned your nose up at the first option- just think of all the lovely airmen, but I suppose you do get the best of both worlds with the wedding shots.
Wedding snaps = dashing RAF chap + lovely bride wearing pretty outfits.
General RAF snaps = dashing RAF chap(s) + aircraft + camel or cactus

(See for me, the choice is too difficult, but I must say I’m veering towards the aircraft and camel option myself, but don’t you worry, I’ll show them off in the many Fridays to come!)

So to the joyous wedding photos

here are two of my very first adopted photos- they were pence to buy!

This couple makes me just go “bless” – they look so young. I love her sweet outfit and snappy hat. And what about Mr and his waves- Mr Whippy or what! (Nice studio shot- great painted backdrop)
Her legs also make me giggle- they are just like mine, but shorter!
***

The second shows more lovely outfits, in particular the brides fab hat and the lovely pleated detail on her dress. Like the hat in the first picture, it’s not a hat that’s easily worn. I do rather like the outfit on the left (standing)- I would wear something like that myself!
Also what’s the lighter coloured uniform belt about- it’s not totally foreign to me as I have seen it before, but I’m not sure on what it is and why he is wearing it? (As most of you already know I’m not clued up on my uniforms! Haha wouldn’t it be awful in none of these were RAF!) Any info would be great on this- I should really ask my grandpapa! The bridegroom really reminds me of someone too, but I just can’t think who : (
 ***

What a handsome couple these two make eh!
I love the fact she is wearing a pair of wings at her neck too, though her bouquet annoys me because I can’t see her outfit properly. Is it a dress, a coat or a costume of some kind?  I like what I can see, and what about that hat!

They had quite a large wedding party too. The happiness in the snap is lovely- I wonder what amused the Groom?
***

For a girl who loves her vintage and her wedding dress collection, these photos are invaluable for researching fashions of the time. Strangely, I’m more taken with the brides that have chosen not to wear the floor length gowns (I have far too many wedding dresses in my collection and I’m saying this- doesn’t make sense to me either!). Maybe it’s because I like the potential reasoning for their choice in outfit or maybe I just like my hats more?! I don’t know, but one thing I do know is how much I enjoy looking upon the happy and hopeful faces of the bride and groom. Does lead you to question of what became of them though, which soon depresses me, so we won't dwell on that.

***
And here are two wedding snaps with the lovely gowns....

Another very beautiful Bride- lovely veil I thought, but what about him? Mr man doesn't look too chipper does he- cheer up fella....
***

Well you can't say this chap isn't happy- what lovely smiles. The dresses are lovely, the bouquets are frothy and dreamy,  and Little Miss Bride has the loveliest dress with the most wonderful padded shoulders! This is a great snap for hairstyles too- I shall be trying them all!

***

And as we are on the subject of weddings, I thought I would add this in too.....

Isn't it lovely- I can't believe I'm jealous of an illustration!
Don't you think he looks like a young Roger Moore?

Don't ask me whats on page 11 either- as it's not there. I'm not a happy bunny- just look at the price I paid for the incomplete magazine! What am I going to do if I ever get married now eh? (unlikely as no man in the world is mad enough) Well I s'pose I will never know the secrets of being a beautiful bride- ah well ; )

I'm sorry that I cannot give you any information about the couples, they are all unknown and dateless I'm afraid.

So which is your favourite Bride, Groom or outfit?

Here's to the weekend...

Wavy Navy Wednesday!

…actually isn’t “Wavy Navy” a name given to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve? Anyway, I'm not sure, but I'm unable to think up another name.  : ( So wavy navy it shall stay.

Don’t worry; this won’t be a regular spot on my blog, as I don’t have a lot of navy related treasures. So my deary-dos you can sigh a sigh to end all sighs ;)
I just thought I would share these two recent acquisitions from the weekend, before they get put away in the old cabinet with the rest of ‘em.
***

In my opinion, this little swinging pendant brooch was quite a find- mother spotted it as I was too busy being transfixed by a portable hanging wardrobe at the time. Twas really nice as well, but far too pricey if you ask me. The wardrobe thingy, not the brooch!

This portrait of a handsome young sailor has been cut out, then sandwiched between some Perspex- you must all know how I like me Perspex jewellery by now, eh! Quite effective I thought.  Oh and what about his wavy locks? Well, I do like a nice wave me. : D

 ***

The second is a little more common- and I’m only saying that because the seller had two! I picked the better of the two (naturally!) and went merrily on my way. As you can see its a ring…. with enamelling…. say’s “ Royal Navy”…not much more I can say, as it’s pretty and obvious what it is!

Ah, I didn’t tell you that it was silver, did I… and a bargain to boot! As you can imagine I was extremely pleased to find it, as I do have a hard time finding affordable ye olde rings that fit my slim fingers. I now have visions of wearing my RAF, ATS and RN rings all at once- haha! Well I can’t show my allegiance to only one of the services- it wouldn’t be fair!

By the way, I won’t really wear them all together! ; ) Yes I'm mad, but not that mad!

And before I forget, the weekend also sorted out my RAF Friday problem- big smiles.
I don't like to wish the week away as this year has gone quickly enough as it is, but I'm now looking forward to RAF Friday!

RAF Friday- The Box

Well folks, I can’t wait any longer to show off this little box. I’ve had it for quite a while now, and I can’t begin to tell you how much I wanted to show it to the world- I was near bursting point I tell ye! This was a surprise from my Pops, which makes it extra special in my eyes... (So there are some advantages of him working away!)

Doesn’t look much from the outside, does it? Jewellery for men, eh? So Pops, you’ve been buying vintage cuff links for yourself and pretending they are a gift for me then? Whoa, hold your horses young Tupeny, I think you better look inside (That's me talking to myself again!). So look inside I did, and my oh my- someone fetch the smelling salts. ;) I could hardly believe my eyes…. A penny spitfire brooch AND a Perspex heart pendant. Not to mention that it was a New Zealand Perspex pendant too! There was a lot of oohing going on at this point, with a heavenly choir playing in the background!

This is where Pa buts in to say “Look in the lid my gal…”
which is then accompanied by even more 'oohing' while I marvel at the inscription…. Quite something isn’t it, she says as she proudly boasts! Sorry, I don't normally like to blow my own trumpet, but I think this is just the bee’s knees when it comes to sweetheart jewellery :)

Cute, huh. Shame I don't know who it belonged to though.
After marvelling at my little treasures, I decided to have a look under the tissue, and this is what I found- even Pops didn't know about this!
It's silver too!

I would like to take this opportunity to say how sorry I am for not keeping to my word last Friday. I was without internet connection for several days, and by the time it reappeared, well it was late (too bloomin’ late) and I was a little preoccupied with sorting for the Black Country. I hope this weeks RAF Friday doesn’t disappoint.

Mayday! Mayday! She has bought more wings...

Another acquisition from our mini one day holiday- isn’t it a cracker (this is where you nod in agreement!).
At first I thought it was a pair of wings displayed with a separate Perspex pendant beneath, which, truth be told I was less enamoured by the prospect of, as I already have examples of both (ooo, get her!). So, when the stallholder pulled them out together, imagine how I revelled at the thought of owning a pair of wings with the Perspex also attached- two for the price of one! Well, there was certainly none of the usual 'erm, should I, shouldn’t I?' this time!

***
The scarf  in the R.A.F colours was also a purchase from the same day, but from a different shop. What can I say, twas obviously my day for picking up Raffy bits! I do wonder about the RAF chap who owned this scarf originally though?

Rather good for a turban, isn't it!

By the way, my title hints at the fact I have more wings- well yes, I deedy do, but that calls for another post. OK, they don't really need another post, but I just haven't got round to snapping them yet! (Oh I can't wait to show you the bits Pops found me!)

***
Also before I forget, every Friday from now and for evermore (or at least until I have run out of things to show!) will be known as "RAF Friday" here on TBT. I’d just thought I would tell you, so you can make the appropriate arrangements to be out or give you the chance to run to the woods! Don’t think for one mini second that it’s going to be informative (certainly not!), it’s just another chance for me to document more of my precious tat. Well, it’s always best to have a set task rather than to go around my room photographing everything willy-nilly, isn’t it!!!

Much love as always
Your Tupney
