Milblog Conference News
Each year, we select a charity or organization which supports our troops and their families as our "featured" charity. We highlight the work of the charity, and attendees can offer a donation if they so choose, but are under no obligation whatsoever to do so. This year, we decided to have a little fun with our charity. We'll be featuring a Jail-and-Bail (complete with judge, sheriff, public defenders and bondsmen) at the cocktail party. You will have the opportunity to "arrest" your favorite (or not-so-favorite) milblogger, and the proceeds from your arrest warrant will go to charity. More information will follow soon.
The featured charity for the 2009 MilBlog Conference is Honor Their Service, Inc.
Honor Their Service, a public charity under section 501 c (3) of the IRS code, was formed in April of 2008 by three Marine wives and a volunteer at Landstuhl RAMC. Though we only recently received formal determination of our tax exempt status, individual board members of Honor Their Service have worked for several years to honor the service of America's military veterans by:
- providing assistance and comfort to wounded veterans and their families
- supporting their efforts to live more productive and independent lives
- assuring all military veterans that their sacrifices have not been forgotten.
Here is the slate of future events we hope to provide our service members and their families:
1. Operation Fresh Air. 2009 will mark our third year hosting Operation Fresh Air events. Operation Fresh Air provides a day of fishing, fresh air and sunshine, fantastic food, boat rides, camaraderie and fun in a beautiful wooded park setting for service members recovering at Bethesda and Walter Reed and their families. It’s a way for military, dependents, and veterans to offer a reminder of ‘normalcy’ to families in a relaxed and military friendly setting. In 2009, we have Operation Fresh Air events scheduled for May, July, and October.
2. Lending Library for Burn Victims. This program would build a lending library of DVDs, CDs, and electronic games for Marines and soldiers recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. If the program is successful, we would like to expand it to other military hospitals.
3. Spa Day at the Hospitals would provide a relaxing day for family members who care for wounded warriors as they recover at Bethesda and Walter Reed. Caring for a severely wounded spouse or child is emotionally and physically draining. Family members of wounded warriors are heroes in their own right, and Spa Days aim to provide a day of pampering for caretakers who give their all (and all too often forget to take care of themselves). It will also offer wounded warriors a way to say, “Thank you”, as they will have the opportunity to surprise a loved one with a care-free respite from hospital life.
4. The Brian Letendre Memorial Soccer Tournament. Capt. Brian Letendre, USMC, was killed while conducting combat operations in Iraq on May 3, 2006. In cooperation with his family, we proposed to create an enduring reminder of who he was and what he loved: one that will enhance civilian awareness of the enormous debt we owe to our armed forces.
5. The Many Hands Alliance. The war has spawned a huge number of military-oriented non-profits many of whose missions duplicate, overlap, or complement each other. Sadly, the difficulties involved with interagency communication and awareness often cause us to duplicate our efforts or reinvent the wheel instead of working together to bridge the gap between government services and the needs of a rapidly growing number of wounded warriors. Looking ahead, these soldiers, sailors and Marines will require support for decades. Even the best designed government services can’t do everything. We’d like to help.
The Many Hands Alliance is a proposed coalition of military-oriented charities whose goal would be to facilitate and encourage interaction, communication, and cooperation. Inspired by the motto, “Many hands make light work”, we hope the Alliance will foster increased sharing of resources, more efficient problem solving, and more effective and comprehensive solutions to the growing needs of our military community. One dream of ours is to coordinate a yearly conference or retreat that would bring medical personnel, recovering or newly injured service members and their families, charities who have a desire to help and vendors who offer innovative solutions together in one place where they can share problems and get the latest information on treatments and benefits. The idea is to provide continuing support to families after they leave the military hospitals and go back to their homes: one that will fill the gap between what the VA can reasonably provide and what veterans need. Many Hands would bring all interested parties together to extend the feeling of “family” that exists in the active duty forces to wounded veterans who deserve our support as well as our gratitude.
6. Keep the Cupboards Full. When a family travels far from home to be at a service member’s bedside, their own needs necessarily take a back seat to those of their loved one. Cafeteria and fast foods grow old quickly and are often unsuitable for families with small children. Honor Their Service would like to keep cupboards on the wards or in hospital-associated housing filled with nutritious and palatable nonperishable food items so families who don’t want to leave their loved one’s bedside have nutritious alternatives to convenience foods.

2009 MilBlog Conference - Panel Topics
This year's conference will feature an eclectic mix of milbloggers who will address some very interesting topics. We added an extra hour to Saturday's schedule so that we could pack in one more panel. Below are the panels for the 2009 MilBlog Conference. Speakers will be announced as soon as they have been confirmed.
Strategy Session: A discussion on military strategy by some of the most prominent thinkers in the milblogging community. Is the War in Iraq won? If so, what now? What about Afghanistan? Plus, thoughts on the way forward in both regions with a new administration in place.
Beyond MilBlogging: Taking the blog to the next level. From book deals to paid writing assignments, documentaries, speaking engagements, television and radio appearances and much, much more, many milbloggers have been able to branch out beyond the blog. We’ll find out how a few of them did it, and what projects they have in the works.
TENTATIVE: The View From the Top: More on this panel later.
Taking Care of Our Veterans: What are the most pressing issues currently facing our veterans, and how will the policy debate be framed in 2009? Speaking of policy, what can we expect from General Shinseki and the new administration with respect to veterans issues?
Back to Our Roots: Some say the “Golden Age” of milblogging has passed. The age when milbloggers were a small, tight community and when bloggers on the front-lines and parents/spouses on the homefront were widely read throughout the blogosphere. Today, there are so many interesting milblogs which are not widely known. We'll meet some milbloggers you may or may not have heard of and get back to the finest tradition of milblogging - celebrating and highlighting the diversity of voices within our community.

2009 Milblog Conference Update
As you know, we experimented with moving our annual conference to Vegas in 2008. We had a great time in Vegas - how could you not have a great time in Vegas - but, Washington is a better venue for our official conference, so the 2009 MilBlog Conference will be held in Washington, DC. Milbloggers will continue to have a presence in Vegas at the annual Blog World Expo, which recently made some news, but the big conference will move back to Washington.
Going back to the successful model of 2007, all events will take place at The Westin Arlington Gateway on April 24-25. We've secured a block of rooms for attendees. You can reserve your room by clicking here. We know some of you like to combine your trip to the conference with a vacation, so you can reserve rooms under our block from April 22-29 (subject to availability). The registration interface is currently being revamped and updated. Once the changes have been completed, I'll post a link which will allow you to register for the conference. I doubt the link will be ready before February 1, so please sit tight while the changes are made.
The registration fee is $50 per person and includes dinner, breakfast and entry to the conference. Pretty good deal... As with everything, milblogging has grown and changed over the years. To reflect that growth, we're adding some unconventional, interesting elements to this year's program. We'll begin announcing the schedule of speakers and topics within the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned.
Tentative program as follows:
Friday, April 24:
7:00 - 7:45P: Milblogger Meeting* (optional, and open to all milbloggers)
8:00P - Midnight: Party (dinner included)
Saturday, April 25:
7:45 - 8:45A: Breakfast
9:00A - 4:00P: 2009 MilBlog Conference*
The milblogger meeting will be an informal, voluntary meeting to discuss items of interest to milbloggers. Among the items we'll be discussing are how we can help raise money for troop charities, help veterans and families in need and better work together on various issues now that the community has become so large.Keep updated on the 2009 Milblog Conference here.

2008 Blogworld Expo - Milblog Conference (Update)
Relevance is the topic of the day.
How do we as a community stay relevant and more importantly, how do we determine our relevance?
CJ of A Soldier’s Perspective noted and I think this is the core of why we do what we do…”I write for myself… My posts will, always be relevant as long as I have a sense of purpose for why I write.”
I think this is the core sense of our being as a community, relevance is not some metric we can capture on a chart, it is not how many readers we have, but it is rather why do we write, why do we spend time away from family and friends to do this “hobby.” It’s at the same time greater than the individual but also only because of the individual that we can continue doing this and our relevance will continue long after we either come home from the front or move to a new local.
Our relevance is based upon what we do with our writing, what influences we exert upon our small circle of influence as Matt Burden calls it, is more important than the number of readers we have or our ranking in the blogosphere, and yet, those things also help us to influence others. It is in a sense the classic conundrum.
Are we relevant?
It’s a question I ask myself every day. Do we really do some good with our chore? Coming here to the conference will confirm in anyone that yes we do, do some good and yes we are relevant.
2008 Blogworld Expo - Milblog Conference
Last night Blackfive hosted a wonderful pre-conference party at The Penthouse Club. Pictures have been locked away for future blackmail efforts. Hahahaha, just kidding honey.
Andi is making her announcements and JP of milblogging.com is about to start speaking.
JP is reading an announcement and playing a video by LTC William Caldwell.
Highlights of the speech:
"...the US is losing the media war. Al Qaeda was posting videos of US personnel being killed in ambushes, to over come the enemies expertise he authorized his soldiers to blog and has required that all Command and General Staff students must blog as a requirement of graduation."
"Our enemies understand that much of the battle is being fought in cyberspace."
"Changing the culture one person, one idea at a time."
"Milblogs remain a great resource for our families."
"Milbloggers are out there telling the story from the lines."
"An informed public is essential, as bloggers you are a part of our democracy."
- LTC William Caldwell
