Almost portraits

This is a collabo with my son Timjan. Thats his chinese writing at the top. Its what happens when you leave your art supplies, and sketchbook out.

The eye on the right side of the drawing is too big, I know. The hair didn't come out to bad:)

As a footnote in art history: The orchid, and the reference picture used, where from the the same place. My mother-n-laws kitchen, but at different times.

Marco drew little caricatures of all his friends on Facebook. For free, for fun, because he's Marco. He's asked to be drawn back. Sooooo....
The eyes are a little too big and close together. I've had a kinda eyes to big problem lately. I think its worked its way out by know.

November 30 Days of Drawing (Final Day 30) Alfred Nobel

Alfred Nobel
Inventor of dynamite, and propagator of the Nobel Prize. He's a rather dapper looking fellow here, and was kind enough to model for me. He was very still and didn't say a thing the whole time. For the upcoming art show my group is having, the theme is Nobel. In Sweden, December 10th is Nobel day. He was a Swedish inventor. I'm still not to sure exactly what I will have on display. I have some wild ideas, but they seem hard to conceptualize. I might make it easier on myself and paint or draw a portrait. I checked online and there isn't much art on this guy except from when he was still alive and blowing things up.

November 30 Days of Drawing (Day 27-29) Maia!

I was very pleased with this drawing. At first. Now I'm seeing some things that need a little adjusting. Its funny how seeing a drawing after its scanned or the size is reduced, you can pick up on some of the mistakes, and changes that are needed. My daughter was a very good model for this one. She was reading her Disney Princess magazine, and it helped her to keep her pose. I won't take full credit for the nose. My wife helped fix it after I drew it to big. I am very happy with most of the results.
Another phalaenopsis, but this time one of Mother-n-laws. Its my first attempt to draw one, or any flower from the back. The one on the right did not come out as good as I hoped. (Next time)

November 30 Days of Drawing (Day 20-24) Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain

Not the best likeness. He looks more like a sentimental Jesus than a melancholy grudge rocker. I've been listening to Nirvana alot lately, and the local Swedish rock station plays them frequently. The other day  I drew a girl playing a cello, and wearing a Nirvana shirt. She was the same age I was when I first started listening to the band. Kinda weird, but made me happy at the same time. I wonder how or fathers felt when they first saw a younger generation wear clothing with the names of their favorite bands from their youth.

From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah [Live] - Its Nirvana, its live, you can pretend they are in your living room, or car.
Sliver: The Best of the Box - Alot of their demos, early recordings, some early live work, and alternate takes

November 30 Days of Drawing (Day 17-19) Birds!

Twitter Bird, Facebook Crow, and Google Owl.
Fat blue birds, and a constipated whale.

Some crow sketches from memory that look more like seagulls.

November 30 Days of Drawing (Day 14-15) Flowers?

One of the flowers on a phalaenopsis orchid I received for Swedish Fathers Day. A little known fact about me: I can draw any orchid,  from memory. I might start drawing, or painting one a day. We have 12 plants now, and its nice to see them taking turns blooming.
Any time I get the excuse, I will buy my wife roses. She loves their smell, and will make time to draw them. Sometimes I join in on the fun.

November 30 Days of Drawing (Day 12) Timjan!

I don't draw my son much. He rarely sits still, even for a picture. My mother n law was over the other day and took some awesome portrait shots of our kids sitting or standing next to our window. It was close to sunset and the light drenched everything in a warm yellow. The photos were instant inspiration to draw or paint. So more to come!
I might give this one another shot one day, but it would be nice to do a larger painting, and try to capture his likeness more. He's a beautiful boy!

November 30 Days of Drawing (Day 10-11) Music

I spent this weekend drawing at Folkmusiknatta i Falun (Folk Music Night in Falun) There where three stages, with performers playing traditional Swedish folk music, new folk stuff, American, and a little Indian. The musicians would play in the hallways or waiting rooms and jam, or join in with strangers who were playing familiar folk music. Members of the bands would also join in before or after their show. Some of these groups would have 8-20 people. It was from 6pm till 1am, and I pretty much drew the whole time. So I'm counting it as 2 days of drawing.

Warm-ups. The man with the guitar was very energetic for an old guy, and the bottom right was the first cello I've drawn. The sketches were drawn with a 2mm, 2b lead. The bottom left was drawn with a .9mm, 2b lead.

Hawkins Hawaii Trio. The band was great to listen to. Great slide guitar from this guy. I kind of rushed drawing the instrument, and should of added more detail. I also had to draw this in the dark so I used a 3mm, 6b lead.

The guy on the top had a great little stance while playing. I tried, but couldn't capture it. The other sketches are of Deliverance. A bluegrass group that sang all the songs, in English without a Swedish accent! I was amazed at how authentic they sounded. The guy on mandolin was an awesome singer. It was fun to listen to the bands introduce themselves or the songs in Swedish, but say the titles in English.

I found these two playing in the stairwell. They had a nice little area all to themselves. They had these great little stances while they played that was hard to capture. The girl was more hunched over, as if she was trying to hide. She played harmonica and sounded awesome.

Crazy old man. Thats all I got to say.

There was one room that played folk dance music all night. Toward the end of the night they had 25 people on the stage playing mostly fiddles.

November 30 Days of Drawing (Day 7) Anki!

My wife is kind enough to let me torture her by drawing her endlessly and needlessly over and over, and over again. I have maybe over 100 drawings and paintings of her. With various degrees of quality. I love her, and she is my favorite model.
Prismacolor Tuscan Red, and white pencil. I liked how the nose, and how the hair came out.
I drew this a month ago, but I have it here for comparison. I like the shadows and value range, but the hair needs to be rendered more, among other things.

Backside

I'm in a new portrait and figure class at the Ron Lemon Studio. I'll post some drawings as soon as I do something good. After the 2 classes I've taken, its kinda like a starting over class and I'm still learning how to construct the figure the way he's instructing. In other words we are drawing alot of boxes.

20 minute drawing from a figure class.
