"Israeli researchers discover shrub that can treat diabetes."
Israeli researchers have found that a plant that grows in Israel, as well as in other parts of the Middle East, is effective in treating diabetes.
Dr. Jonathan Gorelick of the Judea Research and Development Center will present the results of his study of Chiliadenus iphionoides (sharp varthemia), an aromatic shrub that grows in Israel and throughout the Middle East, at the 25th Judea and Samaria Research Studies Conference in Ariel University on Thursday.
Dr. Gorelick and his team, who published the results of their study of sharp varthemia in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in October 2011, found that consumption of the yellow-flowering plant increased sugar absorption in skeletal muscle and fat cells and reduced blood sugar levels in animals.

Wound Healing With Bee Vomit
Surgihoney.
A new honey has been produced that has had ‘amazing’ results treating wounds and infections.
The bio-engineered product Surgihoney was tested on babies, new mothers, cancer patients and the elderly for over a year in Hampshire hospitals.
Wounds and ulcers, including those infected with the superbug MRSA, healed within days, while the number of women who suffered infections after giving birth by caesarean section has halved.
It has also healed the wounds of soldiers returning from Afghanistan, and been used to treat acne and to protect the skin of cancer patients fitted with a catheter for chemotherapy.
Dr Matthew Dryden, consultant microbiologist at the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘It will revolutionise wound care around the world.’
Honey has been used for its healing powers for thousands of years, although doctors favour penicillin and antibiotics.
Lord knows we need knew solutions, since we've over-used antibiotics to the point where most of them don't work any more.

The Princess of Poop
Remember a while back I blogged on the practice of using feces from a healthy donor to cure Clostridium Dificile infections in sick patients? Well, the procedure is now being performed here in Charlotte, NC.
Before Kee prepares a donation, she dons two surgical masks that she has sprayed with a “Rain Fresh” fragrance from an aerosol can.
“Two things you need in this job,” she said. “A sense of humor and good air freshener.”
Properly masked, gowned and gloved, Kee drops a scoop of the sample into a cheap Hamilton Beach blender and mixes it with salt water to produce what she calls “liquid gold.”
Each blender gets used only once.
When the mixture reaches the right consistency, she pours it through a gauze filter, and then fills more than a half dozen huge syringes. These go to Schneider, who uses them to transfer the healthy material into a sedated patient as part of a colonoscopy.
“There’s a big ‘ick’ factor” to the job, Kee said. She lost a few assistants who couldn’t stand the smell. But Kee embraces her reputation as “the Princess of Poop” and keeps her focus on the patients.
“You’re helping people,” she said.
Apparently feces transplants were used by the Chinese as long ago as the fourth century, and have been used in treating animal disorders for a while, too.

Eat Sh*t...and Live
Scientists have discovered that transplanting fecal matter from a healthy donor to someone with a c. dificile bowel infection will cure the infection with far better success than antibiotics.
And, contrary to my provocative blog post title, no eating is involved. A nasal tube fed into the small intestine, or an enema, is used to introduce the fecal matter.
C. dificile infections are becoming more common because of widespread use of powerful antibiotics. They can be lethal, especially in the elderly.

Our Friend, the Maggot
Even more beneficial in healing wounds than we previously thought.
Although anecdotal reports suggested that maggots curb inflammation, no one had scientifically tested the idea. So a team led by surgical resident Gwendolyn Cazander of Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands siphoned samples of maggot secretions from disinfected maggots in the lab and added them to donated blood samples from four healthy adults. The researchers then measured the levels of so-called complement proteins, which are involved in the body’s inflammatory response.
Every blood sample treated with maggot secretions showed lower levels of complement proteins than did control samples—99.9% less in the best case, the team reports in the current issue of Wound Repair and Regeneration. Looking closer, the researchers found the broken-down remnants of two complement proteins—C3 and C4—in the secretion-treated samples, suggesting that the secretions had ripped the proteins apart. When the team tested blood samples from postoperative patients, whose wounded bodies were already scrambling to heal, they found that maggot secretions reduced the levels of complement proteins by 19% to 55%.
For good measure, the team tested the maggot secretions again after a day, a week, and a month to determine their shelf life. They also boiled some. To their surprise, the secretions were more effective after boiling and lost no potency after sitting on the shelf for a month.
Distilled essence of maggot. Sounds like alchemy, doesn't it?

Take Your Soylent Pink, Dear
The Chinese are making dead babies into capsules to be sold as medicine in South Korea, reportedly.
Generally Oriental remedies involve killing endangered species in order to make a Chinaman's dick hard - - powdered rhinoceros horn immediately comes to mind. Wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that they do the same with dead babies.

Addict Brains Are Abnormal
"Brains of addicts are inherently abnormal: study."
Drug addicts have inherited abnormalities in some parts of the brain which interfere with impulse control, said a British study published in the United States on Thursday.
Previous research has pointed to these differences, but it was unclear if they resulted from the ravages of addiction or if they were there beforehand to predispose a person to drug abuse.
Scientists at the University of Cambridge compared the brains of addicts to their non-addicted siblings as well as to healthy, unrelated volunteers and found that the siblings shared many of the same weaknesses in their brains.

That Was One INTENSE Orgasm
A 59-year-old American woman experienced such an intense orgasm during sex with her husband that she had an attack of amnesia and thought that Bill Clinton was still President.
Doctors diagnosed TGA (Transient Global Amnesia), which can be triggered in over-50 individuals by "strenuous activities, bowel movements, or - - commonly - - sex."
So I guess the old claim of shitting my brains out or fucking my brains out has some basis in medical science, hmm?
Incidentally, doctors also had to treat the woman's husband for an incredibly swollen head when he learned of the reason for his wife's memory loss.

New, Effective and CHEAP Treatment For Snoring
It involves a periodic injection of sodium tetradecyl into the roof of the mouth.
Some patients would need the injection several times per year, other patients could get by with a single annual injection. Studies indicate it is effective in 70% of cases.
So, if you have a snoring problem (or a spouse or partner does) and have been despairing about ever getting rid of it, mention this article to your doctor.

We Can Deal With Your Spinal Injury...
...but people will probably call you a "Smurf" after we do so.
