about my flight home.
Tuesday, December 14, 2010

I was looking around my friends' blogs, most of whom haven't blogged. Then I realised that, haha! I haven't either. Been busy with family stuff and job applications. Anyway I can't blog for too long. Interview tmr, for which I still need more preparation. Pray pray pray.

Italy was magnificent. Absolutely amazing. We went with Trafalgar tour, which once again has made the trip enjoyable and splendid. I went to Rome, Florence, Turin (Torino), Milan, Venice, Bologna, as well as a few stops along the way like Pisa, Ferrara and Assisi (I can't rmb the others but I have written it down). Everything was breath-taking. Like Taiwan.. I wanna go back to Italy again. Especially Rome. Uploading photos will take some time - i've over 2k rofl.

I guess the most disappointing thing was the last part. Pretty drama. The tour bus dropped us at the airport, where we were taking our SIA flight back home. The flight was supposed to be at 11.30am. We checked in our luggage, entered the departure lounge and waited. At 11am, we were at this foodjoint called Foodland (straight-forward, haha) when we saw a sign that wrote our flight number and to stay this side. Mum mentioned that our flight may have been delayed, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary, so we just showed our tickets and ate.

After eating, we checked the gate and it wasn't showing SIA. Confused, we checked the time board once again. They put 2 columns of timings. We thought the 2nd one was the arrival time, but turns out that it's actually the Latest timing - ours had changed to 4pm. We were quite horrified, but there's nothing else to do but wait. We went back to Foodland, redeemed some food and wait. I explored the whole departure lounge and bought cards.

At 16:00, we checked the gate and it still wasn't showing SIA. Really worried, we checked the board and this time, it said 23:30. A whole crowd was gathered at the transit desk and we enquired. Our SIA plane had a technical hydraulic malfunction and the repairs were taking longer than expected. Later, our pilot explained that it took so long because they actually had to fly over the replacement part from Frankfurt.

The SIA official then told us that we could stay over at the Hilton hotel until the flight. She was so soft-spoken, we had to strain to hear her. It was quite chaotic, walking on travelators, taking elevators and walking even more. It was then we also realised that half the passengers were Filipinos and they seemed to know each other. We took a while to check in, took a shower each and napped a little. Dinner was provided, and we met at the lobby at 9.30pm to walk back to the airport. We took the long trek again and were back at the departure lounge.

At 11pm, we noticed that the signboard had changed from Gate 12 to Gate 8. We walked to the new gate. At 11.30pm, they made an announcement that the flight was to be delayed by another half an hour, as they were still making safety checks. The Filipinos made some noise, and an SIA official did a reprimanding over the PA.

Finally, they let us board the plane. The pilot told us flying over that replacement part. He then stopped for a while, then told us we had to wait another half an hour. A passenger had fallen ill and they were calling the paramedics to transport him out of the plane.

The flight home was technically 3 hours shorter than our flight to Italy, but it felt forever. The food was not as good as the first flight too. I guess the worse was, on top of all the delays, that the plane had a funny smell, that made all of us feel nauseous.

The sight of Singapore with all its lights on has never looked so good. We were extremely glad to get home.
