handle with care - inception Friday, July 23, 2010 I was reading "Handle with Care" by Jodi Picoult yesterday. It is about this mother who has a child with osteogenesis imperfecta, which basically means that this child's bones are extremely fragile. When this child trips, she breaks her leg. This mother's best friend was her gynecologist. This mother then decides to sue her best friend for "wrongful birth" - legal case, that her gyne did not provide enough information to her prior to her pregnancy, which thus denies her the choice of terminating her birth. Reason? The mother does love her child and does wants her birth, but she is doing this to secure money, so that her daughter can live a better life in the future. I was honestly quite horrified. To sue your best friend, the one who had been for you all this time through the birth and up to the 5 years of your child's whole life?! I stopped at the part where the friend receives the letter from court and had just visited a lawyer. It was at 5am this morning. This totally reminds me of a quote in Bones: "What you did was wrong, but you did it out of love". I watched Inception yesterday, with HL and Ser. Pretty good. I can see why people are all raving about it. It does set you thinking about what led to what and what happened and everything. Serene and I both concluded that the wife is freakin' scary. However, I feel that it wasn't as mind-blowing as I had expected. Once again, the hype from people I guess. Like, I thought the Prestige was really a OMG when I was watched it. Even so, I was really glad to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt - I think he's a good actor, and was very man in this movie, as opposite to all his other roles. I just found out the director Christopher Nolan, also directed Batman begins, The Dark Knight and The Prestige! I love the kick :D 6 points to remember from Commencement (: Thursday, July 15, 2010 Speech By Mr Tan Boon Hui. 1) Do nothing without Passion. Wanting money and high income is NOT a passion. Rather it is passion that gets you the money and high income. Let's get this out of the way first. Do not mistake the 2. 2) You are now in a position to make choices in your life. Do make your choices. Any choice is better than no choice. 3) Be curious about things you do not know about. Be curious about everything. A curiosity about the world is a sign of your hunger to learn. Know what is happening around you. 4) Master the art of good conversation. It's harder than you think. If you do not read the papers, you have virtually nothing to talk about. 5) Volunteer your time. Volunteering gives you purpose by letting you do something that has no material reward attached to it other than pure personal fulfillment. Every potential billionaire needs a cause to live for, and spend money on. You might as well start early. 6) Love the Arts! and support it. You will feel better, I promise. Monday, July 05, 2010 I just met up with some old friends, and heard from one. It seems.. no matter what, the past does affect to a certain extent. Truly social memory. I reflect on the dynamics and actions, and.. perhaps subconsciously, or unconsciously.. through actions, gestures.. even without words, our history does matter. and like.. no matter what one says.. it just can't be erased. It can never go back to the way things were, and it will always affect what is to come. I'm not too sure if that's good or bad, but definitely something to keep in mind. I guess it's a balance, how much to hold on to, and how much to let go. Twas great to hang out with them, catch up and see how they are like now. Tis' interesting :) Time does fly. Xie xie!
