Introducing callsign JUMPER

The lesser known but no less enthusiastic Tartan Squadron took to the skies again this week, this time in Canberra on a flying visit.  The highlight was Comrade James earning the callsign JUMPER after he bravely took his Y-Wing immediately to hyperspace after escorting the freighter off the board, leaving his wingman to be destroyed by the raft of TIE fighters closing in...

Nice one Comrade!

May the Fourth be with us!

Take that Imperial Scum!
What better way to celebrate Star Wars day this week then by running some introductory games of X-Wing with the Lads at Odin's Night Games Club.   2 of the guys had played before and 2 were newbies but all were new to the fantastic co-op campaign rules Heroes of the Arturi Cluster - by far my favourite way of playing this game (and thanks again to Miles for introducing MAGNET and I to it!)
Rookie Pilots = Rookie manoeuvring!
You've heard of Red, Gold, Green and Rogue Squadrons but these adventurous Rookies were determined to give to the Galactic Empire by forming Tartan Squadron (dibs on not painting their ships).  Sadly missing callsigns MAGNET and TEACHER for their first forays, the determined lads  climbed into their ships to strike a blow for freedom, harmony and Tusken land rights.

With appropriate thematic music blaring form my phone, the first mission was Rescue Rebel Operatives and together the lads managed to escort the triple HWK-290 off with just 2 hull points left.

With that win in hand, Tartan Squadron proceeded onto the Disable Sensor Net scenario where swarms of TIE fighters appeared from nowhere.  With lots of "Its a Trap!" echoing around the table, the dogfight was on.  Eventually, the sensors were all destroyed and the lads all jumped to hyperspace to go for well earned beverages.

The Biggs Darklighter memorial Commendation for best on ground went to Dave with his 6 (mostly stolen) kills for the night.  Well done Ace! He has now been allocated the callsign THIEF.

THIEF captures imagery and yet another (stolen) Victim!
Everyone had a good time = Win!
No doubt you will hear more from Tartan Squadron in due course - like it or not!

18,000 Kms of Adventure!

What a whirlwind of a month!

We departed the US in mid December, enjoyed a fantastic week sightseeing in London and spent an amazing week in Norway enjoying Christmas with friends.  We then journeyed home via Singapore, enjoyed New Years in Sydney (and Catching up with the Dux! of course) and then visited family and friends in Melbourne and Canberra. The Lad enjoyed his 15th Birthday amongst that lot too. Phew!

Along the way we managed to see some fantastic stuff and in addition to the typical tourist sights:
Catching The Force Awakens in a London Cinema
A few pints with David - my old mate from A Wargaming Odyssey
A bona fide Dalek at the BBC
The truly inspiring Agincourt diorama at the Tower of London: 2,000 28mm figs!
Norway - it had to be done
One of the many delights of the frozen North!
1:1 Scale X-Wing gaming: up close with a T-70 at Singapore Airport - very cool!
NYW Fireworks at Sydney's Darling Harbour with the museum ship HMAS Vampire in the foreground
So back to reality now (finding a house, cars, etc) which is far more humdrum.  On a brighter note I did just retrieve my box of paints from my Dad's shed.  So at least now I can start to consider applying some pigment to something - I am a little behind even in my meagre Analogue Painting Challenge this year...

Fall-In and X-Wing: The Next Generation

The Lad and I played quite a few diverse and varied games at Fall-In but the big big BIG shiny for him was X-Wing.

First up, I want to give a big shout out and thanks to Steve, Sean and the "Green Squadron" crew (including Miles!) who were so very welcoming and inclusive of a young gamer to their group.  It was a real pleasure to watch the Lad get seduced by the dark side a new game.  Of course it cost me a lot of money afterwards but it was totally worth it. Plus buying your kids stuff is what Gamer Dads do, right? Right!
Encouraged by veteran pilot Miles, the Rookie prepares for his first mission!
Reilly ended up playing three missions with Green Squadron on Saturday - two in the afternoon and one in the evening.  The co-op campaign allows 6 players per mission, 1 ship each, all working together against the Imperials on AI mechanics.  Notably, Miles and other Rebel pilots gave up their seats to let him play   In a time constrained setting like a Con thats no small deal.  Thanks again boys.

So Reilly climbs into the cockpit of his X-Wing and he is off on his first mission - "Disable Sensor Net"
Green Squadron launches for its first mission

Intense focus on the Rookie Pilot's face
Soon enough, the TIE fighters were all barrelling in on Reilly's X-Wing.  Lots of them in fact. It was looking a little bleak...
But somehow he pulled through only having lost 2 shields. At this point Squadron Commander Steve gave Reilly his callsign MAGNET - as in Fire Magnet.  Miles and I teased him a lot about now being "Chick Magnet". He hated it. It was cool.
More intense Rookie pilot focus as Sean and Steve mentor him though the Mission.
The boys achieved their mission and MAGNET returned to base safe and sound.

A quick look at the boys' VERY impressive collection of X-Wing goodies, and this is when the table was already covered in ships!  Just look at that Nebulon B Frigate - at 2 feet in length it is crazy big (BTW you can buy one here: http://www.space-rocks.net/#!escort-frigate/cioi)

Mission Two was a bit nastier: "Miner's Strike". One of the key mission parameters was to destroy the Imperial Shuttle.
Mission Briefing- good focus Rookie!
Chasing down the shuttle amidst all the TIEs was quite the challenge
One last chance to burn the shuttle before to jumps off the board.  The other pilots took down its shields and MAGNET zooms in for the last salvo - will he take it out and save the day or will it escape and the Mission fail?
I managed to capture the cheeky grin as MAGNET realises he got enough hits to destroy the shuttle! Big Cheers went up from Green Squadron!
OK, the fun is over - time to get out of here!
At this point MAGNET gets up from the table, declares that "We must go buy this game. Right Now"
and so off we went to blow cash in the Vendors' Hall.  Here are some proud Gamer Dad moments an hour later:
Hmmm...shiny!

That new box smell...
and the star field gaming mat is so comfy...

In the meantime Miles got his seat back and actually got to play :-)
After dinner and watching the WWPD podcast recording, we got a final game in and this time I got to play too.  MAGNET even said I could be his wingman, which was nice of him! The Mission was "Secure Holonet Receiver" and I climbed into an X-Wing next to him...

Dad and Lad conduct a fighter sweep ahead of the Rebel surveillance ship

and perform an Immelmann to drop in behind a pair of TIEs. My shooting was rubbish but MAGNET rolled in and splashed them both!
I ended up going head to head with this guy later and claimed my first kill!
Finally, the surveillance craft did its thing as as we prepped to go to light speed the Imperials got more reinforcements:
Miles captured our concern at the strong Imperial reinforcements!
To which MAGNET lived up to his name, manoeuvring right in front of the two elite TIE interceptors to screen our recon bird and let it jump out! Was he mad or brave? Could he survive such odds? Whatever - the pilots of Green Squadron were most impressed!
Reckless Bravery in action!
Actually, it worked out well - Green squadron massed fire and downed the Interceptors' shields which allowed MAGNET to destroy one and we all managed to escape unscathed the next turn.  Another successful mission!

At this point we called it a night and in tallying up his record sheet MAGNET realised that over the course of the afternoon he had splashed 3 TIE Fighters, an elite TIE Interceptor and an Assault Shuttle.  With 5 kills that made him an Ace! That made him happy, as did all the XPs (AKA "Danos") and upgrades he could now afford.

So ended a great introduction to the game.  Forgive the rather self indulgent post but it really was a treat to watch all this unfold over the course of one day.  Many thanks again to Steve, Sean, Miles and the other lads for making it all possible.

MOAB 2014

Comrade James Reporting: MOAB, the Mother of All Battles, is the annual gaming event held by Sydney gaming club Southern Battle Gamers. The convention has been growing in size over the years, and I myself have not been there for nearly 20 years, and was pleasantly surprised how big it has grown.
I managed to convince Significant Other at 430pm the day before to hop in the car with her kids and drive the 3 hours to Sydney so I could compete in the MOAB Bolt Action tournament. Significant brownie points spent believe me.......

I'll cover the tournament in a separate post, and will cover some of the action at MOAB here.....

Main hall, with traders along the walls and demo games and participation games in the middle.

Dropzone Commander...how good is that terrain ??

Cardboard never looked so good........

On the Seven Seas, by Osprey...

Jugula

Battletech, an oldie but a goodie....

Me old fave, Flames of War...

Obligatory Warhammer 40K tourney

One of the personalities in the Australian Bolt Action scene is David Bruggeman, or the Demo Gamer. Dave and his three teenage sons host massive demo/participation games of Bolt Action on amazing tables that they build specifically for cons. MOAB was no exception, and the following pics show their amazing multilevel table, built from 4Ground buildings and printed street textures glued to MDF panels.....

With the recent re-release of Space Hulk, I was pleased to see this amazing 3D version as a participation game....

Another fave of mine and Pauls, X-Wing, by FFG.....

Command and Colours:Napoleon board game converted into a miniatures version....

Overall the convention lasted three days, of which I saw the first two. As well as the main hall above there were several smaller rooms filled with gamers of all descriptions, including BloodBowl, 40K Apocalypse, Warmachine, Warhammer Fantasy and obscure historical games....
The traders seemed to be doing a ripping trade, and it was great to catch up with John of War and Peace games again (my opponent at Wintercon earlier this year)
Not sure if I'll get to MOAB next year, but I'm keen.....

Will be back shortly with the round up of my Bolt Action experience.....
