TAFA Search on Etsy

Have you searched for TAFA on Etsy?  Our members tag their products with "tafa" so that if you entere that in the search bar, you will get results showcasing our TAFA member products.  It's turned into quite the amazing selection!  We now have over 2,300 TAFA items and they are absolutely beautiful!  That's 58 pages of results!

Etsy used to be a great place to find handmade eye candy and it still is, but because sellers are not juried in, there is a lot to weed through before you find the treasures.  Increasingly, we see poorly photographed products along with commercial supplies and "vintage" which may not even be really vintage...

TAFA members are vetted in based on their professionalism, quality of product, and how they fit into our mission.  If you are looking for textiles, fiber art, and handmade fiber supplies, then you can take a short cut and go straight to the best on Etsy: our TAFA Team!

Notice that the sidebar allows you to filter the results, too.  Happy shopping!

Savvy Seller Café: Market Yourself For Free! Part I

Dot Vase - Felted Wool $156 USD by papaververt.etsy.com

Sometimes the best marketing opportunities don’t cost a penny.  This is good news for artists on a budget aka yours truly.  Today’s online communities offer more opportunities than ever before!  Are you taking advantage? Here’s a handy checklist to add to your marketing toolbox.

This is quite possibly the most effective free marketing opportunity I’ve used. If you need help setting up your page, talk to another TAFA member who’s done it already or ask a friend to show you the ropes. It’s reasonably straight forward, so don’t be intimidated.

2. Create a Blog Using Blogger
Start your own blog for free on Blogger! In fact, the blog you’re reading right now is a perfect example.  You don’t have to be very tech savvy or know html to make it look great.  If you haven’t started blogging yet, I recommend reading “Blogging All-In-One For Dummies” by Susan Gunelius. I just started my blog a few months ago and already I'm hooked.

3. Use Twitter
I resisted Twitter for a long time, but I finally signed up a few days ago. Essentially a micro-blogging tool, Twitter inspires conversation and relationship building. You can add links to your blog, shop or anything else you want to pass on. Simple and effective, it’s definitely worth a try! I'm a proud newbie @ChristineMFord.

4. Write for Popular Blogs
For a blog to be successful, frequent posts with great content are needed to build and keep up readership. Many popular blogs need guest writers to accomplish this.  If you decide to try guest writing, make sure that backlinks to your own website, blog or shop is allowed.
5. Comment on Other Blogs
When you follow or comment on other blogs, many will return the favor giving you more traffic and exposure.  When appropriate, leave a link for your website, blog or shop. Be very careful not to create spam.  If you leave a link be sure that it is relevant and useful.

This is just a small list of ideas to get you started. Check back next week for even more ideas!

What’s your favorite free online marketing strategy? Leave us a comment!

Creatively yours,

More TAFA Market Participating Artists

Continued from yesterday:
Meet a few more of our artists displaying this week in Paducah

Posted by Barbara Harms, Asian Art And Quilts

and, remember, if you can't step into the market you can still purchase the Market items on TAFA’s site

Ready, to meet a few more artists?
These were questions I asked each of them were:
1 -How would you describe the style of your work?
2--Describe yourself in 5 words?
3-What has been your proudest professional accomplishment to date?

Constance Rose

  1. My work is abstract. I design my quilts to highlight the surface-designed fabrics I create, the fabric itself is the main focus. (This is more so now than when I created the quilts at the TAFA Market.) The machine quilting emphasizes the dyed, printed or discharged pattern lines. I like my quilts to make a statement just because the fabric is beautiful and worthy of being displayed as artwork.
  2. Five words to describe myself ~ perceptive, broadminded, inventive, nonconforming, down-to-earth
  3. My proudest professional achievement to date ~ having 2 articles published in Quilting Arts in 2010
check out my blog and read all about me~  Connie

1 -How would you describe the style of your work?
There has never been a time in my life when I wasn't knitting or sewing. I learned those first lessons from my grandmother when I was too young to recall a beginning. It just became a part of my descriptive adjectives: long hair, green eyes, fiber addict. I love how color and texture combine to not only create beauty, but function, as well. Manipulating and combining my textiles with my experience in costuming, papercraft, and surface design is a never ending and enthralling pursuit. My aesthetic is an amalgam of my bohemian and vintage sensibilities with a good dose of classic design. Everything is a surprise.
2--Describe yourself in 5 words?
The Business:
Handmade. Natural. Vintage.
Sustainable Design and Decor.
me:
Eclectic. Devoted. Cranky. Mischievous. Coffee Addict.
3-What has been your proudest professional accomplishment to date?
A year ago I closed and walked away from my successful special events floral design studio to return to my roots and true love- fiber. Big changes in life tend to always be nerve wracking even when the changes are "the right" changes. I'm relieved to find that I was courageous enough to take the risk and am so grateful for the support and encouragement I've gotten from everyone around me.

Rose Hughes - RavenSpeak Quilts

1. I would best describe my work as 'expressionist', for I take in the world and then give back through my quilts how I see it. I love to travel - near or far, and by paying attention find some small or large, special scene to give back.
2. 5 words - that's tough -- intuitive, open, patient, reflective, tenacious
3. I feel very blessed to have been able to share my work and my passion for all things 'fiber' with many people, though many ways, but I believe through my books, Dream Landscape & Exploring Embellishments, I get to share ways for so many others to see they can 'do it, too'. I love that moment in a workshop where my student's eyes light up with possibilities now open to them... that's the best!

TAFA Celebrates Year One!

TAFA: The Textile and Fiber Art List is celebrating it's first birthday!  This video showcases many of our members in a fast, upbeat gallery show.  About half of our members have shops on Etsy, so you will see many of our Team members here.  Enjoy!

TAFA Members on the Map!

All of our TAFA Team members belong to TAFA: The Textile and Fiber Art List.  We are an international organization of fiber artists and textile businesses.  Half of TAFA members have shops on Etsy, which you can visit by clicking on the tabs above.

TAFA was launched on January 31st, 2010, so we are about to celebrate our first birthday!  During the last year, we have grown to 230 members, have communities on Etsy, Facebook and Flickr and focus on improving our businesses and finding ways to expand our markets.  Our members are passionate about what they do and we believe that we will become THE destination for people who love textiles and fiber art.

TAFA members have just been mapped on google, providing a great tool to see where we are physically.  Click on the pins and you will see a link to their member profiles along with an image of their work.  Zoom in to clustered areas so that you can see individual pins.  It's a lot of fun!

One of the things that struck me was how remote some of our members are located, far from even a small town.  One more illustration of how the web has become a powerful tool to allow people to live where they want to and still remain connected to communities and markets.

Etsy's New Portal for Teams Now Live!

Etsy has been able to grow into a vibrant international community because it is just that: a community.  I have a long list of seller tools that I would like to see them implement (they are not the best retailers in the world), but I have no complaints about their community building skills.  In fact, I applaud them and it is why I have chosen to stick with them over eBay or other online markets.

Early on, Etsy created a place on its site for sellers to band together under common themes or locations.  They called them Teams and gave space on their site for the Teams to have visibility and often promote them in their updates and mailings.  When we decided to organize TAFA members into a team, Etsy was in the middle of a complete restructuring of the process so that we never had an official place on the site.  Until yesterday.  We were able to set up our new home and our members have been making their way over there:  TAFA Team on Etsy

This will make it easy for buyers and sellers to find us there and to look through our members.  We will be able to find each other easily.  It will also drive new people to our TAFA site.  I have a feeling many new opportunities will come out of this, but we will have to learn how we can make the best use of our place there.  For now, we invite you to come and visit.  While you are there, you can also take a look at other Etsy Teams.  There is no directory yet, so you have to search the teams with keywords.  If you are after textiles, fiber art and related products, then you don't have to search much because you already found the best:  Our TAFA Team!!!

Heh, heh.  I have become a cheerleader in my old age!  Go TAFA, go!!

October 31, 2010 TAFA Team Open Discussion for Fiber and Textile Artists

Our weekly TAFA team thread for Oct 31 on Etsy is now open. Click here to share your activities, opinions, treasuries, blogs posts etc.

In case you are wondering, this is a thread I, as Etsy liaison,  start every week for our TAFA team on Etsy Team and Events Forum. The purpose of this thread is to provide visibility to TAFA Etsy team and its members. It is also an excellent tool to be visible to any potential buyers of fabric and textile products. Lots of Etsy buyers lurk around the forum reading threads, clicking on treasuries and many a buying decisions are made based on what they read and hear around the forums.

You may post anything that is related to your art, shop, tips, techniques or anything else that the members might be interested in. This is your thread.

Introducing TAFA's Etsy Team: A Wonderful Place to Shop!

TAFA Members are all about excellence.  The working artists represented here push the limits of innovation, exploring new ways to manipulate fabric, thread, and all of the other materials used in the textile and needle arts.  We have tried to organize our Etsy shops by theme, but many of us have too many interests, causing our inventory to reflect a wide range of products.  But, most of us do have specialties and in exploring the categories we have set up, you will find the common threads.

In, Apparel,  almost all of the shop owners explore various methods of using dyes and surface design.  Coupled with elegant designs like the organza jacket above, you can be sure that these are all one of a kind pieces.

Of course, one must accessorize one's outfits, right?   One of our Australian members, Plumfish Creations, might just be the wildest of the bunch, crocheting wonderful scarves and lariats out of recycled silk.  Check them all out in Jewelry and Accessories!  Absolutely stunning wearables, some functional, some just because you can!

Not necessarily toys (although some definitely are!), Art Dolls and Animals may perhaps appeal to the child within each of us.   I happen to have many creatures from around the world, made of fabric, wood, metal and clay.  Somehow they make me feel connected to the people and places they represent.

Want to wrap yourself in a quilt?  You will find those in the Home Interiors category.  Art quilts are normally intended for the wall.  A quilt is defined as a textile which has a top, a batting (or some kind of filling) and a backing.  Art quilters push the boundaries of that definition by exploring new ways to embellish, design, dye, and manipulate fabric and other materials.  TAFA was embraced by art quilters early on and continues to form a substantial part of the membership.  Several of them have shops on Etsy, to my great delight!

Aside from those wonderful traditional quilts which you can sleep on and wrap yourself in, Home Interiors also offers wonderful objects for your home.  Vintage Renewal finds old furniture and gives it new life by fixing the upholstery and using cool, funky fabrics.  Think of how much is saved from landfills by doing this!  In fact, many of our TAFA members are committed to green practices by recycling, upcycling, or growing/using renewable materials for their products.

TAFA is international, both in where we live and in culture.  Many of us are passionate about traditional ethnic textiles and in the cultures they represent.  Some work with vintage textiles, while quite a few work diligently to provide economic opportunities to low income artists who cannot access larger markets for their wonderful skills.  Handed down generation to generation, cultural textiles have often been marginalized and are disappearing around the world.  Old and new ideas sometimes flower into hilarious interpretations of modernity:

You will find Afghanistan, Turkey, South Africa, Panama, and several other countries represented in Cultural Textiles.

And, of course, any of you who makes "stuff" will agree with me that supplies take up a big chunk of our real estate in our homes.  With some, it is almost a disease!  Well, TAFA members are here to help you find great supplies and patterns, handmade, vintage or designed by the seller.  Yes, we are all about textiles, fiber art, and the needle arts, but some of our supplies are made of wood, rubber and we also have patterns.  Oshiwa, for example, is a small workshop in Namibia that carves wooden stamps which can be used on fabric, paper or imprinted into clay (and soap?).

Other members design rubber stamps or salvage vintage lettering.  We now have several members on TAFA who raise herds of sheep and other animals for their wool.  This pleases me to no end!  A few of them have shops on Etsy where you will find wool, roving and yarns.

Finally, we have the Eclectic Mix category.  As we are only allowed 10 pages on this blogger platform, we used up the others for categories where there were defined groupings of product.  Eclectic Mix houses those that don't quite fit into those other categories, like embroidery or paper.  But, it must not be missed!  Treasures are there!

This brings us to the end of our little tour.  TAFA is full of eye candy, so explore our shops here and our member profiles on our main site, TAFA: The Textile and Fiber Art List.  There is also a lot of knowledge here.  Our member blogs hold invaluable information for the textile and fiber art enthusiast.  Spread the word about us and know that your good faith is deeply appreciated!

Welcome to the TAFA Team!

TAFA: The Textile and Fiber Art List is a membership organization that seeks to find new markets for its members using social media and other networking tools. About half of our members are also Etsy sellers. We aim to become THE destination for the best source of fiber art, textiles and related needle arts on Etsy.

TAFA is about product. All of us on Etsy have something to sell. We represent quality, innovation, a sensitivity to the environment, an interest in the world, and an enthusiasm for the historical connection contemporary artists have to those who have passed before us. Our materials include cloth, yarn, thread, dyes, an infinite assortment of needles, machines, scissors, and other supplies. We represent old and new, traditional and contemporary. Some of us recycle what was destined for landfills. Some of us are working artists while others represent projects in disadvantaged areas of the world. Together, our products speak about the world we live in.

TAFA is about people. We live all over the world. We are black, white, pink, brown, and some may have green or purple hair. We are women and men who believe that a small business can make a difference. We are passionate about our work and hope that you will share in that enthusiasm. We are people who understand that our work is part of a larger community where we need buyers and supporters to keep us going. Visit our shops, get to know us, interact with us. We are all part of this beautiful world; a wonderful tapestry of languages, customs, traditions, innovation, creative thought and a love for the fabric that binds us together.

Please share our blog with your family and friends. Visit our Etsy shops and our TAFA website for more wonderful work. We love comments, so please feel free to let us hear your voice. We thank you for your support.
