knitonefelttwo

I am a keen knitter, felter and a real fibre enthusiast based near Geelong on the Bellarine Peninsular in Victoria, Australia. I'm a working mum, and have a wonderful daughter and husband.

I love fibre and creating wonderful things in knit and felt.   I started knitting when I was around 12 and then started to knit again around 5 years ago. I like to knit and felt scarves, hats and bags.  I was introduced to the wonderful process of felting in 2010 and love it.   Every felt item in my shop is made using Australian merino wool and is handmade by me. I am a member of the Victorian Feltmakers.
-Jo

Artist Statement:  I enjoy using a broad spectrum of colour in fresh and bold designs which you can see in my items. In my felted range of items, I use good quality Australian Merino wool which is very soft (15 - 19 micron) and source my supplies from local farms where possible.
All items made are one of a kind. No one piece is ever the same.

Fabric of Life

My name is Mary Jose and I have been a textile conservator serving museums, galleries and private collectors for the past 25 years.  My passion is the preservation of material culture as expressed through traditional textile practice.

I have pursued this through my work as a conservator but just on 8 years ago I established my business,  Fabric of Life.  I am privileged to be able to travel throughout the world visiting textile artisans to learn about their work and to buy for my business.

As all textile lovers will know there is always something more to learn about textiles  and more beautiful textiles to discover.  I am hoping to connect with people with similar interests through TAFA and also to source materials for my conservation work.

Mission:  Fabric of Life specialises in handmade contemporary and antique textiles individually selected from around the world.  We are proud to offer original handmade textiles that are finely crafted, distinctive and beautiful for use in interior design, fashion or as gifts.

We follow Fair Trade principles by buying from individual makers or projects that help to promote community development, self-sufficiency and sustainability. Each year we visit villages that still  practice traditional textile arts and select exquisite handmade pieces for Fabric of Life customers directly from the maker.

We are also proud to present a range of Australian Aboriginal textiles and fibre works from communities throughout Australia.

Fabric of Life also provides textile conservation services for the care and preservation  of a wide variety of antique and contemporary textiles.  Professional conservation enables objects of beauty, interest, sentimental value and cultural significance to be enjoyed by present and future generations. Whether you have a unique item yourself, or are responsible for the care of a museum collection, Fabric of Life has the expertise to preserve and care for your special textile piece.

Our expert team can provide advice on the right textile for your home and prepare the perfect display system to suit. The Fabric of Life textile collection is diverse in culture and style. We travel the world, sourcing textiles of the highest quality from artists across Asia, Africa, South America and Central Australia. Most works are new but we also stock vintage textiles for the collector. This is what makes Fabric of Life’s textiles truly unique, a collection you won’t find anywhere else.

Our extensive range is on display in our Melbourne Street store in Adelaide and online at Fabric of Life.

Anton Veenstra

"Faded Flower", Tapestry by Anton Veenstra

My 40 year passion has been in making textiles. I have a particular visual language and textiles is the vehicle of expression for me. It has visual interest, texture and lustre.
Artist's statement:  Textile, because it is so everyday, has long been overlooked in importance in the art world. I think a reappraisal is overdue. My intention is to promote tapestry as a feisty medium for depicting reality and dream. As a precious material it also has great potential as an upholstering fabric, one of its traditional functions, and also as a component of wearable art.

Linda Robertus

My name is Linda Robertus. I am Dutch, but I have been living in Brisbane, Australia with my family since March 2007.

I started quilting in 2006, when I was expecting our third son. After a year of making quilts for my children I slowly moved into the 'art quilt scene'. An online screen printing class in 2009 (with Lyric Kinard at Quilt University) has heavily influenced my work, as has the fact that my oldest son joined a gymnastics club around the same time. My series of gymnastics quilts is still not finished! Recently, I have started using cyclists in my quilts. I am currently working on a second cycling quilt.

I like to try other techniques and materials from time to time, such as lutradur, lino printing, making a quilt based on a photo (photography is another passion, and I keep a daily photo blog)... And I love optical illusions and will try from time to time to capure them in a quilt!

In 2008 I founded Art Quilts Around the World; an international group where each member makes a quilt to a designated theme four times a year.
My online shops are Blue Jacaranda, on MadeIt (the Australian Etsy)  and on Etsy where I sell small handmade items. I also design and sell fabric on Spoonflower.

Rosemary Boyd / Plumfish Creations

I have always loved to create. I can't remember a time when I didn't knit or crochet or sew. My grandmother had the enthusiasm and patience to teach me when I was very young - but more importantly she shared her fascination with every stitch I created; showed her excitement and eager anticipation as each piece unfolded; and jubilantly celebrated every completed work.

I love vibrant colours, and rich textures... colours that ask to be noticed and textures that long to be touched.

The accessories I make are sometimes said to be flamboyant and lively - an expression of a part of me, that is otherwise hidden beneath a conservative quiet exterior.

I have long had a dream to develop a career where I would have the opportunity to showcase and sell my own designs, but have previously lacked the confidence to take the first step. In recent years this desire has grown stronger, and the passion for creating has become almost overwhelming.  I have been encouraged by many to pursue my dream, and inspired by my beautiful artist daughter, to freely explore and express every spirit filled emotion and idea - whether fleeting or enduring.

I often feel that my art takes on a life of its own, and somehow creates itself...

Dijanne Cevaal

I am a full time  textile artist who dyes and prints her own fabric and constructs it into quilted and stitched textile hangings. I also make fabric for sale.

I teach many of the processes I incorporate in my work.
I am an author of instructional books in relation to quilting and design
I am also passionate about travel and am presently a creative guide for Syria for Creative Arts Safaris, also a TAFA member.

Artist's statement:  My quilts are a product of a lifelong engagement with textiles, the mobility of the stitch, the interaction of colour created by dyeing and printing, and the creation of stories. As a small child I built constructions that were stitched and embroidered and this love of embroidery continued through my teenage and adult years. I have  a Masters degree In Visual Art(textiles) from  Charles Sturt University, NSW which has pushed me to examine the textile surface in a more immediate way, not simply as a vehicle for imagery, but a return to the touch and textuality of textiles, its intimacy and its narrative content.

All the fabrics in my work are hand dyed, and I employ simple printing techniques to create original one-off fabrics used in my work. I love simple resist techniques such as folding and tieing, having fallen in love with the indigo cloth of West Africa. I tend to work in fairly simple colour contrasts though the cloth I use is often complex in the colours they contain. Stitching both by machine and hand are important elements, as is the creation of texture. My work is much inspired by the Australian landscape, and in particular the Otways, where I worked and lived with my children.

In the past 10 years I have been curating traveling exhibitions, that have travelled mostly to Europe and the Middle East.  My travels have opened up a whole new world of textiles- the Middle East was a treasure trove of textiles made by hand in time honoured ways- they were stunning and they have offered plenty of inspiration for future work.

Renate Kirkpatrick - rensfibreart

Simply put, I’m in love with fibre, colour and texture.
I’m a proud Aussie, living in the sub-tropics where the crystal ocean, grainy sands and textured rainforests are never-ending inspirations. I incorporate all types of fibre into my work, from natural to synthetics, and will try anything to achieve the effects I’m after.
Although I’ve traveled many fibre/texture/colour roads, exploring Handmade Paper, both recycled and plant fibre (cellulous) and Rag Rugging, Freeform Crochet/Knitting is where I’m at right now. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t exploring the fibre arts in one form or another and I expect it to go on and on for some time yet.
However, I’m not limited to the unusual… I also design easy to read crochet patterns and have two published craft books available world wide – ‘Crochet Techniques’ – 'Freeform Crochet and Beyond'.

Artist Statement:  An artist by nature but a teacher at heart, my main aim with Freeform is to encourage people to be spontaneous, trust their intuition and never stop asking themselves, ‘I wonder what will happen if I try this or that?’ and then give it a go. I say…..’Dare to be different’ ‘Step out of the box’ ‘Experiment, explore, enquire, you’ll never know until you have a go!’
