Halloween

Halloween 2013 in the Moses house was a much cuter affair than other years - no corpses, ghosts, or specters of death. Whitney was a mouse, probably in honor of her role as one of the Three Blind Mice in CYT's upcoming production of Shrek the Musical

McKennna's Borrower costume won the "Most Creative"
award at the neighborhood trunk or treat.

...and I was the Wizard.

...or should I say the Junior Wizard?

Halloween Van Gogh

My daughters and I accompanied my sister to a Halloween-themed Van Gogh and Merlot painting workshop. We didn't get to carve pumpkins this year, so this workshop was the next best thing. I think my daughters had a great experience learning to paint. We will definitely go again.

Halloween

My girls made their own Halloween costumes this year. McKenna was a "Borrower," a mythical, mouse-sized person from a children's story. Whitney was Cindy Lou Who from the Grinch.

We had an agreement at work to all dress up for Halloween, but ony Jessica and I remembered. For that reason, no one else gets to be on the blog today. (Ha).

Halloween

All Hallows Eve with the Moses children awlays includes carving pumpkins, eating way too much candy, and having all kinds of fun.

Jack-o-lanterns...

Our kids love to make "ghost pictures" using long exposure times.

Whitney the Corpse Bride...

McKenna the Witch...

Halloween

Halloween came and went much like any other time, but this year, Dakota carved an apple instead of a pumpkin. What a creative kid!

Whitney carved a pumpkin and looked postively violent as she did so. Actually, this is a look of concentration, not anger. The camera just happened to capture her expression in a rather dramatic, but misleading fashion.

Dakota dressed up in his best goth appearance for Halloween, but every where we went, people thought he looked like Adam Lambert.

The girls dressed as twin babies in their sleeper pajamas.

My skeleton paint from last year was such a hit, I decided to do it again. Sadly, I scared a few kids and even made one girl cry. I tried to use my nicest voice, but the look was just too dark, I suppose.

Halloween

Halloween was more enjoyable this year than ever before. The whole family dressed up, even Rhonda. My kids are still young enough to think Halloween is a big deal, so we went all out to appreciate the moment. All too soon they will grow up and no longer get excited to dress up as their favorite fantasy or nightmare. Then again, I guess I never really grew up when it comes to Halloween.

Dakota was the Phantom of the Opera, which of course fits his personality perfectly. He loves acting and singing, and at the same time, he seems to appreciate the odd mixture of elegance and darkness surrounding that character. Actually, if you look at our family picture, he and I resemble dark end-posts to the mostly light center of our family. How funny!

Rhonda brought out her inner goddess, while McKenna acted out her vision of herself as a fairy princess.

Whitney was an angel, as she normally is, but she had a small devil tail as well. How perfect is that?

As for myself, after conscientiously avoiding depictions of evil and death all year, I embrace my inner shadows connected to death for just one night. Oddly, I must have channeled more of my shadow than expected. I thought my skull paint job was about average in quality, but little children were afraid to approach me and adults had to do a double take. Even my friends didn't recognize me.

That is the wisdom of Halloween. We act out our fantasies and shadows for one day, so they actually hold less power during the rest of the year.

I met my friend Jordyn and posed for this picture.

Plaster

My children had a wonderful time making masks with plaster of paris. Dakota especially enjoyed creating a partial mask inspired by the Phantom of the Opera. As Halloween approaches, I will be happy to post photographs of his costume. It looks awesome.
