This Is Arizona: The Greatest Tourist Trap

Photos by A.C. Huestis. Click above for bigger.

If you've ever been on the highways in Southern Arizona, you've seen billboards for The Thing, and plenty of them. They made a great impression on me as a youth, and ever since I've used them as a yardstick for excellence in typography. There's plenty on the web about The Thing, a combo tourist trap/truck stop/souvenir shop, but I'd recommend starting at Roadside America. Here's "the thing" itself:

I've always been a big fan of shabby, decaying dioramas, so I love this one, one of the most dog-eared I've ever seen:

This Is Arizona: Magical Mystery Tour

Photos by A.C. Huestis. Click for bigger!

I was a little worried that Sparklesibling™ Andrew might be tapering off with his illuminating photographs of Arizona, but OMG, it turns out that not only was he just warming up, but he had stepped outside his Tucson comfort zone (I use that term loosely) with spectacular results you'll be seeing over the next several days. Andrew writes:

Well, I took a little trip down to Benson, St David, and Tombstone and Bisbee. Of course different things seem to make an impression on me. Benson and Saint David were bristling with Kokopelli! Bisbee a little too charming. Cochise county is a wonderland.

Obviously I love any business with "Sparkle" in the name:

I wonder if the McCain campaign is still distributing the sign shown above? I'm guessing a quickie redesign was in order.

EDIT: I'm surprised I didn't realize this earlier, but the McCain sign above appears to have been customized with the "Drill, Baby, Drill" slogan. Neat!

Andrew remarks, "Note the fabulous bees laden with pollen. I wonder if they are africanized bees in need of deportation or if they teach english classes with a heavy accent!"

This one should probably be deported immediately:

This Is Arizona: Shadow Puppets

First of all, it's Sparklesibling Andrew's birthday today, so I'd like to acknowledge again his contributions to this site. His series of photographs of Tucson and environs have perfectly captured both the peculiar beauty and oddly persistent bleakness of Arizona.

Unlike previous photos in this series, I actually requested a specific subject from Andrew in this case: the awful Kokopelli, who began his life as an ancient Pueblo Indian deity and has now devolved into a cutesy, ubiquitous Southwestern™ design motif. In a way, I regret my request, because Andrew's photos of this particularly egregious Kokopelli are almost more beautiful and dramatic than they have any right to be:

What interests me isn't so much the hated Kokopelli, but a particular affectation which is a hallmark of Southwestern kitsch: the silhouette. The motifs change over time, but there is a constant, constant use of the silhouette; you see it everywhere, all the time. I remember in the 1970s, the most commonly used silhouettes were that of the roadrunner (typical example here) and the saguaro, still perennial favorites. In the 80s, the big star was the coyote (neckerchief optional) howling at the moon (fantastic example here). I think Kokopelli's fame starting rising dramatically in the 90s, as did the petroglyph-like spiral. There almost seems to be a law that all new restaurants in Phoenix and Tucson must incorporate decorative metalwork silhouette motifs in some fashion.

But anyway, Kokopelli, unfortunately, is here to stay:

Above is an Iron Cross Blister Beetle, which doesn't bite or sting but might totally goo on you, which will make you blister. Ow. "In case you were wondering," says this helpful website, "you should not eat these insects." Noted!

This Is Arizona: Cowboy Mural

Photos by A.C. Huestis. Click for bigger, funnier.

I can't remember where this gigantic mural is in Tucson. West Speedway? [Update: close, West Grant] It's huge, blocks long, painted on a wall which encircles... a cattle feed factory? [Update: close, a meat rendering plant] I think? I never realized how many funny stories are shown on it, though.

This part is especially hilarious:
