A phrase that Ken and I have used quite a bit in the last 7 weeks is "we're such bad parents". Usually this is said after we discover something we should have done for Amelia and didn't. For example, when Amelia was about 2 weeks old, we needed to run to Sam's Club, for something really important (probably ice cream). The membership is only in my name since I got it through work, I needed to get out of the house, and Ken wanted to come (he loves Sam's Club/ Costco), so of course we had to bring Amelia. Ken carried Amelia around the store since she hated her car seat at that point. When we went to leave, the lady at the exit checking our receipt gave us the third degree - how old is she? where is her hat? don't you know it's cold outside? Ken and I headed to our car saying "we're such bad parents". . . and thus it began.
Since then, the phrase has been used on occasions such as when:
* Amelia's hands smelled like dirty feet - apparently you have to unclench their hands and clean in between their fingers.
* I went to a friend's house for fun and threw off Amelia's sleep schedule.
* Amelia scratches her face because I haven't trimmed her fingernails lately - and man, her nails grow quick.
* I realized Amelia wore the same sleeper for 3 days in a row.
Friends have reassured me that all new parents go through this phase, so I have apologized to Amelia in advance and hopefully she'll forgive us for our lack of experience ;)

Everything you have described I STILL do . . . man I am such a bad parent. Which reminds me . . . did I comb my 5 year old's hair today?
Sorry, it's not a stage. Welcome to parenthood. And just wait till potty training age, there will be many that enumerate why you are bad parents then.
you are so funny! YES andy and I say that all the time. Like the time she was asleep and we put her in the car seat because we needed to go somewhere and then buckled her in the car. Well, we didn't buckle her in the car seat. on the FREEWAY we turned around and she was crawling 1/2 way out of her seat! we both freaked out! yep. we are bad parents. at least smelly hands aren't going to put her in too much danger.
When she's three or four, set out a bowl of dry Cherrios on Friday night and make sure the t.v. is on the cartoon station. Then she can eat them in front of the t.v. while you sleep in Saturday morning. That'll definitely make you a bad parent (like me).
oh and andy forced kylee to drink bad milk this week. in his defense he didn't know that it was bad. she just kept crying and saying no. we thought that she just wanted juice. we felt so bad later after she drank it and then smelled the milk carton! I dont think that asking if we are good or bad parents is ever going to go away. we aren't perfect. we don't know everything. I bet I could post something on here every week.
Thanks friends! It's good to know we're not the only "bad" parents.
I love that phrase. I use it all the time :) Before I had kids I would totally be grossed out when kids had dirty faces and no shoes on... and now, that's all my kids have :) I am such A BAD PARENT :) You are so cute, we are going to miss your little family.
I am so out of it that I had no idea you had a beautiful baby girl!!! She is SO cute!! Oh, and you are a completely normal parent...I have worse "bad parent" moments then that. People and their opinions can be funny! congrats and keep up the good work!
