UPDATE: Mississippi Gay Mayor Candidate Found Dead.... Man Arrested for the Murder

Gay Mississippi mayoral candidate, Marco McMillian was found dead a couple days ago. His death is being investigated as a homicide.
Coahoma County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday in a news release on its Facebook page that the body of 34-year-old Marco McMillian, a Democratic candidate for mayor of Clarksdale, Miss., was found in Coahoma County earlier in the day.

The body was found in the woods near the Mississippi-Yazoo levee, about 30 miles away from a roadway where McMillian's car crashed while being driven by another person, County Coroner Scotty Meredith said.

Meredith added that investigators were treating the case as a homicide until they could prove otherwise.

A person of interest was in custody, but had not been formally charged, Will Rooker, a spokesman for the Coahoma County Sheriff's Office, told ABC News.

Police did not identify the person of interest.
This is horrible news. There is so much running in my head. More to come on this story.

UPDATE a man was arrested today:
A 22-year-old man was charged with murder Thursday in the death of a mayoral candidate in the Mississippi Delta.
The Coahoma County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that Lawrence Reed of Shelby was charged in the death of Marco McMillian. McMillian, 34, was a candidate for mayor of Clarksdale and was well-known in the community and beyond.
An investigation began Tuesday when a man crashed McMillian's SUV into another car on U.S. Highway 49 near the Coahoma and Tallahatchie county lines. The candidate wasn't in the car.

The Obama Administration will file a Friend-of-the-Court brief in support for Marriage Equality

This is some huge stuff, so check it out
Administration officials say the Justice Department will urge the U.S. Supreme Court to allow same-sex marriage to resume in California, wading into the protracted legal battle over Proposition 8 and giving gay-rights advocates a new court ally.

After first suggesting it would not get involved, the Obama administration will file a friend-of-the-court brief late today in support of the two gay couples who launched the fight over the issue four years ago, the officials said. Today is the last day for filing briefs in support of the couples' position.

Phoenix expands Anti-Discrimination Law to Include LGBT Community

The Phoenix City Council did something good last night.

They have expanded the city's anti-discrimination law to protect the LGBT community in city contracts, housing, employment and all public accommodations.

KPHO reports
The vote approving the ordinance revision was 5-3. Councilmen Jim Waring, Bill Gates and Sal DiCiccio voted against the measure.

The city currently prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, genetic information and marital status.

"This was the right thing to do for our city," Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said. "With 165 other cities, including Tucson and Flagstaff, adopting similar ordinances, some more than a decade ago, Phoenix had some catching up to do. We as a city value all our citizens, and consider diversity as our strength. It's good for business, it's good for our economy, and it's the right thing to do for Phoenix."
Of course there were haters, complaining about sexual predators, but it wasn't enough to sway the vote.

Big Corporations file a Supreme Court brief supporting Marriage Equality

More big news in the gay marriage front.

Several corporations support the take down of Prop 8. In fact, 60 plus companies will file a brief against the anti-gay law.
According to a draft copy obtained by Fortune, the companies argue that such laws "send an unmistakeable signal that same-sex couples are in some way inferior to opposite-sex couples, a proposition that is anathema to amici's commitment to equality and fair treatment to all."

At least 60 companies had committed to signing the brief as of Tuesday evening, according to Joshua Rosenkranz, who is counsel of record on the brief and head of the Supreme Court and appellate litigation practice at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. That number is expected to rise by Thursday, however, according to Rosenkranz. Others who have already committed to sign include AIG, Becton Dickinson, Cisco, Cummins, Kimpton, Levi Strauss, McGraw Hill, NCR, Nike, Office Depot, Oracle, Panasonic, Qualcomm, and Xerox.
Apple, Facbook and ebay are also on board.

Interesting Quote: Fox Sports contributor Jason Whitlock

Whatever the case, difficult questions must be asked, and they should come from the commissioner’s chair. It’s Goodell’s job to protect The Shield. It’s Goodell’s job to protect the employees.
The best protection for the league and the players is the freeing of the gays.
Let’s be honest. I think it’s reasonable to assume that 15 percent of NFL players are gay and/or bisexual. Generally speaking, they’re forced to conceal their sexuality out of fear of being ostracized and potentially released from the team.

They need to be set free, released from the grip of the most hostile work environment in America. Is there a more homophobic work setting than a football locker room? I can’t think of one.

Jason is calling on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to 'free the gays'

The U.S. Census Bureau will remove "Negro" from its surveys

Interesting news from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The U.S. Census Bureau is bidding farewell to "Negro" on its surveys and forms after more than 100 years of use.
The description has come to be viewed as outdated and even offensive by many people in the black community, officials say, so the bureau will reduce the options to "black" or "African-American."
The agency will include the new language next year in its annual American Community Survey, which reaches upwards of 3.5 million households in the United States.
The term "Negro" was introduced in 1900.

The government considered removing "Negro" from the 2010 Census. However, the bureau kept the term, saying that older Black folks in southern states still identified with the word.

75 Republicans Sign Brief in Support of Marriage Equality

This is amazing and proof of change.

75 GOP members have signed a brief supporting gay marriage. This is a direct challenge to John Boehner's foolishness over DOMA and the religious right.

Here's more
Legal analysts said the brief had the potential to sway conservative justices as much for the prominent names attached to it as for its legal arguments. The list of signers includes a string of Republican officials and influential thinkers — 75 as of Monday evening — who are not ordinarily associated with gay rights advocacy, including some who are speaking out for the first time and others who have changed their previous positions.

Among them are Meg Whitman, who supported Proposition 8 when she ran for California governor; Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida and Richard Hanna of New York; Stephen J. Hadley, a Bush national security adviser; Carlos Gutierrez, a commerce secretary to Mr. Bush; James B. Comey, a top Bush Justice Department official; David A. Stockman, President Ronald Reagan’s first budget director; and Deborah Pryce, a former member of the House Republican leadership from Ohio who is retired from Congress.

Ms. Pryce said Monday: “Like a lot of the country, my views have evolved on this from the first day I set foot in Congress. I think it’s just the right thing, and I think it’s on solid legal footing, too.”
It's possible that more will come aboard. The document will be submitted sometime this week.

C. Everett Koop has Died

High profile Surgeon General C. Everett Koop died in New Hampshire at age 96.

HuffPo did a highlight of his accomplishments while he was in office
An assistant at Koop's Dartmouth institute, Susan Wills, said he died Monday in Hanover, where he had a home. She didn't disclose his cause of death.
Koop wielded the previously low-profile post of surgeon general as a bully pulpit for seven years during the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.
An evangelical Christian, he shocked his conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.
He carried out a crusade to end smoking in the United States – his goal had been to do so by 2000. A former pipe smoker, he said cigarettes were as addictive as heroin and cocaine.
Koop's impact was great, although the surgeon general has no real authority to set government policy. He described himself as "the health conscience of the country."
"My only influence was through moral suasion," Koop said just before leaving office in 1989.

NY Mag talks about the Gay Divorce

A new article reveals the truth about the woes of Gay marriage and divorce. A couple of the stories are really sad.

Here's more:
It’s not a subject that marriage-equality groups tend to trumpet on their websites, but gay couples are at the start of a divorce boom. One reason is obvious: More couples are eligible. According to a report by UCLA’s Williams Institute, nearly 50,000 of the approximately 640,000 gay couples in the U.S. in 2011 were married. (Another 100,000 were in other kinds of legal relationships, such as domestic partnerships.) The marriage rate, in states that allowed it, was quickly rising toward that of heterosexual couples: In Massachusetts as of that year, 68 percent of gay couples were married, compared with 91 percent of heterosexual couples. Another reason for the coming boom is that while first-wave gay marriages have proved more durable than straight ones (according to the Williams Institute, about one percent of gay marriages were dissolving each year, compared with 2 percent for different-sex couples), that’s not expected to last. Most lawyers I spoke to assume that the gap will soon vanish, once the backlog of long-term and presumably more stable gay couples have married, leaving the field to the young and impulsive.

In North Dakota: High School students wear KKK hoods at a Hockey game

Race relations in America.
An NHL team popularized the idea of a "white-out," where fans get dressed in white on game day. So at a hockey game at a North Dakota high school, the students did the same. Students at Grand Forks Red River High School covered themselves in white clothing or paint for a big hockey game. But a few ill-advised students took the idea a little too far--and showed up to the game dressed as Ku Klux Klan members, the Grand Forks Herald reported.

The offensive fashion made news after a student took a picture of the of the students in their KKK hoodies and uploaded it to Twitter. Grand Forks Red River High School administrators now say that three students have been disciplined. “We, as a school, are extremely disappointed with the behavior of these three students,” Principal Kris Arason told reporters in a mass email statement."This behavior is not a representation of our school or student body.”

The Obama Administration files Brief to Shut Down DOMA

This is huge!

The Obama administration filed a brief with the Supreme Court on the reasons why DOMA is unconstitutional.

Here's more:
Filed in United States v. Windsor, a case challenging Section 3 of DOMA, the administration said “gay and lesbian people have been subject to a significant history of discrimination in this country,” and argued that laws targeting individuals based on their sexual orientation should face additional scrutiny by courts reviewing them.

In the brief, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli asked the court to uphold a federal appeals court ruling that found DOMA to be unconstitutional:

Section 3 of DOMA violates the fundamental constitutional guarantee of equal protection. The law denies to tens of thousands of same-sex couples who are legally married under state law an array of important federal benefits that are available to legally married opposite-sex couples. Because this discrimination cannot be justified as substantially furthering any important governmental interest, Section 3 is unconstitutional.
The brief also mentions Prop 8 and other marriage bans in the country. Again, this is huge stuff, my friends.

In Mississippi: Newspaper responds to Hate Mail over Gay Wedding

The Laurel Leader-Call published a story about a gay wedding between two women. Once the the story was out, hate mail came in like a flood.

But instead of hiding and not responding to the haters, the paper's owner Jim Cegielski wrote an editorial.

Please read:
We were well aware that the majority of people in Jones County are not in favor of gay marriage. However, any decent newspaper with a backbone can not base decisions on whether to cover a story based on whether the story will make people angry.
The job of a community newspaper is not pretending something didn't take place or ignoring it because it will upset people. No, our job is to inform readers what is going on in our town and let them make their own judgments. That is exactly what we did with the wedding story. Our reporter heard about the wedding, attended it, interviewed some of the participants and wrote a news story. If there had been protestors at the wedding, we would have covered that the exact same way … but there weren't any. We never said it was a good thing or a bad thing, we simply did our job by telling people what took place.
I took the bulk of the irate phone calls from people who called the paper to complain. Most of the complaints seem to revolve around the headline, "Historic Wedding," and the fact that we chose to put the story on the front page. My answer to the "Historic Wedding" headline is pretty simple. You don't have like something for it to be historic. The holocaust, bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Black Sox scandal are all historic. I'm in no way comparing the downtown wedding of two females to any of those events (even though some of you made it quite clear that you think gay marriage is much worse).
[...]
We have stories about child molesters, murders and all kinds of vicious, barbaric acts of evil committed by heinous criminals on our front page and yet we never receive a call from anyone saying 'I don't need my children reading this.' Never. Ever. However, a story about two women exchanging marriage vows and we get swamped with people worried about their children.
I had at least 20 or so readers express to me they think gay marriage is "an abomination against God." We never said it wasn't. We never said it was.
What do you think about this story?

Remember the Teacher who said gays have ‘no purpose in life’? She's Suspended

Diana Medley has been placed on administrative leave due to her safety.
Superintendent Mark Baker of the Northeast School Corp. in western Indiana’s Sullivan County issued a statement saying the teacher has been placed on administrative leave out of concern “for the safety and security of everyone in our buildings.”

He added that “as a precaution” the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police “have deemed it necessary to station an officer” at North Central Junior-Senior High School in Farmersburg, about 75 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

Baker said the “administration and one school employee in particular” at the school have received “aggressive email messages.”

“We are turning over to law enforcement all such communications,” he said.
Diana should have known that her comments were nothing but pure foolishness. I'm glad people responded to her hateful message, maybe next time she will think before she speaks.

New Poll: More Americans Oppose DOMA

A new poll from Goodwin Simon Strategic Research and Voter Consumer Research, more folks are coming out against DOMA.

Here are some of the results:
  • Americans believe DOMA is discrimination, plain and simple. Sixty-two percent of registered voters agreed that “it is discrimination for the federal government to deny marriage protections and benefits to legally married same-sex couples.”
  • People can oppose Section 3 of DOMA while not necessarily supporting same-sex marriage. A number of Americans believe that DOMA is bad policy and that same-sex couples deserve equal treatment from the federal government, even if they don’t believe that their state should extend the rights of marriage to those couples.
  • Notably, support for the repeal of DOMA is now stronger among people of color than it is among whites. Sixty-five percentof black people and 61 percent of Hispanic people said that they opposed Section 3 of DOMA, compared to a still high 57 percent of white people. This is a marked reversal from years prior, when polls found black and Hispanic support for the repeal of DOMA to be lower than white support.
  • Americans in strong majorities believe that same-sex couples should not be denied the federal benefits and protections of marriage. More than 70 percent of respondents believe that all couples should have hospital visitation rights, survivor benefits if a spouse is killed in the line of duty, and family and medical leave.
“In 2013 registered voters have reached a tipping point, in which a majority (52 percent) favors allowing marriage for same-sex couples. However, an even larger portion—almost 6 in 10 respondents (59 percent)—oppose DOMA’s requirement that the federal government discriminate against those same-six couples who are legally married by denying their marriage’s recognition,” said Amy Simon, a partner at Goodwin Simon Strategic Research, who fielded the poll.

One of Bishop Eddie Long's accusers Writes a Tell-All Book

One of Bishop Eddie Long's accusers is telling everything in a new book.

Centino Kemp's book 'First Lady' spills the beans about the crazy and abusive relationship he had with Long.

Here's more:
The "tell-all" biography of Kemp shares of a violent encounter between him and Long in 2006 in Miami at Keiser University, where the bishop allegedly physically assaulted the teenager. The account also includes a reference to a sexual relationship between the two, hidden from Long's wife and family.
Kemp, who unlike other accusers of Long was not a member of New Birth Missionary, describes his long and troubled past, sharing of parents who were absent from his life and did not provide him the support he needed growing up. Kemp also admits to being gay and reveals how that affected him over the years.

So I thought it was time to give an update about what's going on with me.
  • I'm 39 now, so I got to get things in order.
  • I don't know the next step in life, but I guess I have to take it.
  • My partner and I have separated. Some of it is my fault and some of it is his. But during this time, I'm learning a lot about me and some of my hidden issues. I do hope we can get in a good place again.
  • My job is steady but difficult. Folks are going through a lot of stuff and our division is seriously changing. While change is good, it's also hard as hell.
  • I downsized my old car and got a brand new car, a Dodge Dart. The marketing of the car didn't work, so the price of the car dropped and it was an easy trade.
  • I was suppose to be in Philly with a bunch of other LGBT bloggers, but I have to travel to Canada instead.
  • I lost 6 pounds in 2 weeks.
  • I think I will cut a few inches from my hair.
  • I have a weird stalker, I guess I'm famous, especially to this person. I feel like Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard.
  • Saw Beautiful Creatures and thought it was good. It was like watch an updated Bewitched special.

In Missouri: Gay Teen gets to take his boyfriend to Prom

17-year-old Stacy Dawson wanted to take his boyfriend to his senior prom at Scott County Central High School in Missouri. However, he was told he couldn't do it because the school's handbook didn't allow it.

But Stacy fought back:
When Dawson questioned the policy, he was told by a school administrator that the school board would not consider revising it, according to The Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit civil rights organization representing Dawson. So on Thursday -- Valentine's Day -- Dawson had The Southern Poverty Law Center send a letter to Scott County Central High and the school district threatening legal action.

One day later, the district had good news for Dawson: They were removing the offending line from their handbook, and said the line was never meant to be exclusive in the first place.

"I found out why the stipulation in the student handbook was originally put in there, and it's rather innocent, to be honest," Alvin McFerren, Scott County Central School District superintendent, said. "This was during a time 10-15 years ago that the previous administration was having issues with some of the students trying to come in on either the single rate or the couple rate. They implemented that to make sure they couldn't circumvent the rates that students were supposed to pay as they entered into our dances."

McFerren said Dawson will be allowed to go to prom with his boyfriend.
Good for you, Stacy and for the gay students at that schools.

As was outlined in the first report of these data in October, measuring sexual orientation and gender identity can be challenging because these concepts involve complex social and cultural patterns. There are a number of ways to measure lesbian, gay, and bisexual orientation, and transgender status. Gallup chose a broad measure of personal identification as LGBT because this grouping of four statuses is commonly used in current American discourse, and as a result has important cultural and political significance. One limitation of this approach is that it is not possible to separately consider differences among lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, or transgender individuals. A second limitation is that this approach measures broad self-identity, and does not measure sexual or other behavior, either past or present.
