Afghan police kill suicide bomber in Helmand province

A suicide bomber was shot dead by Afghan national police forces in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan on Sunday.

Afghan interior ministry following a statement confirmed the suspected suicide bomber armed with the suicide vest was killed by Afghan police forces around 9:30 am local time.

The source further added the suspected suicide bomber was looking to carry out suicide attack on Afghan police forces convoy in Kajaki district and was shot dead before he carry out the attack.

Afghan interior ministry confirmed there were no casualties incurred to Afghan police forces following the incident.

The incident took place in the Kajaki District of Helmand province.

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – The following statement is from the commander of the International Security Assistance Force Regional Command Southwest, Gen. Charles ‘Mark’ Gurganus.

"I offer my congratulations to police in the Kajaki district of Helmand province for successfully identifying and killing a suicide bomber who had planned to target a police patrol and possibly harm innocent civilians. The police’s swift response to this cowardly act prevented any casualties and demonstrated again the professionalism and bravery of Afghanistan's National Police."

Why Taliban beheaded 17 Afghan villagers in Helmand?

Local authorities in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan on Wednesday revealed the facts behind the beheading of 17 Aghan civilians including 2 women by Taliban militants in Kajaki district in this province.

Helmand provincial governor media office following a statement announced that individuals involved behind the beheading of 17 Afghan civilians have been recongized by local intelligence officials.

Taliban militants on Sunday beheaded 17 Afghan civilians including 2 women in Kajaki district at Roshanabad area.

Based on the preliminary investigation reports the civilians were beheaded by Taliban militants due to the participation of men and women in a musical party however local officials today said that the civilians were killed due to insider problems among the two prominent Taliban leaders.

The statement issued by Helmand provincial governor media office said Mullah Abdul Bari district chief of the Taliban group and a senior Taliban leader ordered to behead the 17 Afghan civilians.

According to reports the two Taliban commanders had illicit relations with the two women however provincial governor media office did not comment in this regard.

The local residents were arrested and imprisoned by the local villagers to prevent the futher broadcast of the issue.

Local officials said Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Bari district chief of the Taliban group ordered his commanders to behead the two women along with the imprisoned villagers.

Local intelligence officials said Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Bari had given the order to hide the issue and punish the local villagers.

The two Taliban commanders who slaughtered the local villagers were recognized as Mullah Syed Gul and Mullah Wali Mohmmad however it is yet not clear if the two Taliban commanders have been arrested or not.

The incident took place in Sarkali village in Dasht-e-Roshan area at Kajaki district.

The source further added two Taliban commanders recognized as Mullah Syed Gul and Mullah Wali Mohammad had issues among themselves over the two women and the local residents contacted the office of the two Taliban commanders to resolve the issue.

Beheading of the civilians were strongly condemned by Afghan president Hamid Karzai and rights organizations in the country.

May 30., 2012. - RC Southwest Operational Update

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Two local children were wounded today, one of which received a double foot amputation, when an improvised explosive device exploded in the Kajaki district of Helmand province. The children were taken to a coalition medical facility for treatment.

*The below information has been provided by the Afghan National Army 215th Maiwand Corps Public Affairs Office.

In Sangin district, Helmand province, the 1st Brigade Heavy Weapons and the 2nd Company, 2nd Battalion of the 4th Brigade, 215th Maiwand Corps, conducted a joint clearing operation yesterday as part of Operation Omid. As a result, 25 Taliban insurgents were killed and 5 more were wounded. Fifteen different types of weapons and 30 IEDs were captured. The IEDs were then destroyed at a secured location. The 215th Corps did not suffer any casualties.

Taliban leader detained in southern Helmand province

According to a statement issued by International Security Assistance Force, Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader during an operation in Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province.

The statement further added, the leader used specialized weapons to conduct direct-fire and roadside bomb attacks against Afghan security forces throughout Marjeh district.

The statement also added, 1 additional suspected insurgent was detained during the operation.

In the meantime combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered an explosives cache during a patrol in Kajaki district, Helmand province.

According to coalition security force officials, the cache consisted of approximately 1,280 pounds (582 kilograms) of explosive materials and approximately 370 improvised explosive device components.

The security force destroyed all explosives and IED components on site without incident.

Afghan led and coalition supported security force conducted a security operation in Maiwand district, Kandahar province.

During the operation, the security force seized several improvised explosive device components and a number of Afghan police uniforms.

Several suspected insurgents were detained by Afghan security forces for further questioning. No civilians were harmed during the operation.
