Seeing Beautiful Requires Striking a Balance

To see beautiful, you must strike a balance in life. Balance is what Floridina taught me. We didn't speak the same language and it might look like I'm writing about physically balancing sticks, but it's so much more than that. Learning to strike a balance in Kayonza, Rwanda with the amazing Fight to Live Women we get to support through the beautiful Kula Project taught me about a greater balance.

Standing on the rocky hills of their coffee farm, these female farmers reminded me that life isn't supposed to be muddied by to-do lists and work demands. Life isn't supposed to be busy and cluttered and filled with material things. Life is supposed to be lived respecting the land and in the moment. Life is best lived when we are fully present and celebrating and seeking the beautiful that is very much there. There are no to-do lists or iphones or instagram accounts to check in Rwanda. There is water to fetch and conversation to be had and food to be grown. There are no "likes" or credit card bills or gas tanks to be filled. There is fresh air and fresh food and laughter from neighbors. A lot can be learned about striking a healthy balance from these beautiful women. You don't have to go to Rwanda to learn it, you just have to get back to your roots and settle in on seeing beautiful in this moment.

This Is Not a Bag

This is not a bag. This is new hope.
This is not a bag. This is a child's education in Eastern Congo.

As you read this, I am sitting in the same town where the women who make these bags live. I prepared this post before I traveled to Goma, so there will certainly be much deeper reflections to share with you when I return. Though I have never met Solange, Riziki, Mapendo, and Argentine, when I carry their beautiful art I cannot help but feel the hope the resonates from them.

Give the Gift of Water

You can help create beautiful by bringing clean running water to a School village in the rural area of Loitokitok, Kenya and help empower young girls who spend 6 hours per day walking to fetch water.  Currently, children must leave school to fetch water during the school day and also fill buckets for their home life. The young girls are walking to a dangerous water tank and climbing the tank to capture the water. The tank top is covered with rusty metal  (see photo to the below) and children are leaning over this to get to the water.

Hygiene and sanitation cannot  currently be practiced at the school; the rest rooms are not hooked up because of lack of water. The sinks are not in use because there is no running water. Six hours per day are spent collecting water.

How Global is working to bring clean water direct  to the school  grounds  to 300 school children and surrounding community members by  installing   a solar pump and holding tanks along with setting up a hand washing station.

Once the pump is installed, there will need to be holding tanks put into place. The tanks will need to be placed up high to create pressure and water will be pumped into the tanks and a faucet included so that the children can have water that pours safely into their buckets. The pipes will then be extended to the rest rooms, showers and sinks in the property and the flowing water will then be tested and approved by the health department.
