Sprite-ly sea legs
Sunday, April 11 | 12:30 PM

A spontaneous decision to bring Sprite to the beach spawned a huge surprise. For one who hates to shower, Sprite actually loves the sea! In fact, she ended up swimming in the sea for the first time!

Someone said to me recently, "You cannot compare dogs to children."
To that I replied, "Right now, Sprite's my precious like your children are to you. Respect that."

Whatever ties you down in life - material possessions, your work, family or even pets - we all should respect each others`indulgences and fixes.

purple
Saturday, April 18 | 11:51 AM

Sprite had joined my tennis company at the court a couple of times.

She will gladly retrieve each ball for you each time it lands on the ground.

The weather was hot so I had to spray some water on the ground for her to drink.  I had forgotten to bring her bowl on this occasion.

Sprite with her purple-streaked harness and tongue.

crazy
Friday, March 27 | 11:17 AM

I thought I'd bring Sprite with me to the pool downstairs so she'd not whine that much when I'm away.

"This looks edible."

"Well, at least it provides great shade!"

"Where did he disappear to?"

"So much water before me and not a drop to drink..."

"Humans are just crazy to swim in this heat!"

‘Small, puny, but still a pet’

Read this and tell me if you are not annoyed by Pet Station's indecent proposal.

‘Small, puny, but still a pet’
Public outcry over hamster promotion leads to its halt
Loh Chee Kong
cheekong@mediacorp.com.sg

SPEND $35 at a pet shop and you can take a hamster home for
free. If you hold a PAssion Card — a membership card for grassroots leaders — you only need to spend $25.

This joint promotion between Pets’ Station and the People’s Association (PA) sparked a public outcry yesterday after a flyer was sent out by email to PAssion Card holders.

And in a truimph of civic action, the promotion — due to take place next week at Tiong Bahru Plaza where Pets’ Station has an outlet — was stopped even before it could begin.  This was after the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) acted on the complaints.

Readers who wrote to Today were particularly disappointed that a Government agency had endorsed the promotion, including Mr William Fong who was “appalled” when he learnt of it through an online forum. He said: “Pets should never be meant as gifts or presents because having a pet is a lifetime responsibility and commitment.”

Another reader, Dr Tan Chek Wee said he was “deeply shocked and saddened”. Online forum posts described the promotion as “ridiculous”. Said one: “A hamster is very small and puny but it’s still a pet, and should be treated as one ... not like a free gift.”

SPCA executive officer Deirdre Moss told Today the society had received more than 20 email voicing strong objections to the promotion. Besides contacting the AVA, which was “already onto it”, SPCA wrote to the PA to “strongly object to such a practice” and stressed that “pets are living things which shouldn’t be exploited as free gifts for promotional purposes”, said Ms Moss.
Mr Madhavan Kannan, who heads AVA’s centre for animal welfare and control, said the authority had contacted Pets’ Station and “instructed them not to proceed with the promotion”. The pet shop complied.

Reiterating that the AVA bans the sale or gift of animals at exhibitions, Mr Madhavan said this is to prevent impulse buying and subsequent abandonment of pets.

When contacted, Pets’ Station declined to comment as its spokesperson was “unavailable”.  On its part, the PA apologised for its “oversight”.  A PA spokesperson told Today: “When alerted on the concerns raised on Thursday morning, we immediately withdrew the PAssion Card from this promotion, before it could take effect. (We) share the views that pets like hamsters should be cared for by people who are genuinely interested in them.”

Still, Ms Moss gave full marks to the civic action which “resulted in almost instant action by the authorities”. She said: “I was quite stunned and amazed that so many people are speaking up for animals. We are very encouraged that there was so much awareness over
an issue like this.”

go weak at the sight of...
Wednesday, March 11 | 11:06 AM

I thought my knees would go weak only at the sight of the opposite gender and CD/DVDs in a Grammaphone outlet.

This happened awhile back when I was at Petmart to buy some basic necessities for Sprite at a much lower price than many pet shops around.

I cannot believe that they even sell muzzles for small dogs like a Jack Russell???  That is against the law of nature!  I am referring to muzzelling any animal for that matter.  As long as owners do their bit to train and socialise their pets, there is seriously no need to subject man's best friend to that humiliation.

Speaking of basic necessities - I guess I got a little carried away.  By the way, the 15kg dry pack and her new bed are not in the picture.

She was already sleeping on her new bed even before I had removed the plastic wrap.   Although it looks a little too queenly for her size, now she actually almost touches both ends lengthwise when she spreads herself spread-eagle style across.  The guitar is mine.

Need I say more?

furry friend or fright?
Saturday, January 31 | 8:52 AM

I've gotten my new furry friend last night!

She's a Jack Russell.  I thought this breed does not shed much hair until I saw this patch on my toilet floor this morning while brushing my teeth.  I guess against any black background, everything else appears stark and larger than life?

Remember him?  Hiojin used to clamber around my couch after completing his work.  And I have to call him a few times before he comes back to the study table.

Today, I saw a different side of him.  Upon seeing my furry friend, his face contorted to form the map of the world.  Sheer terror transformed his body language altogether.  Despite assuring him that my dog is very friendly, he shivered like a reed.  After placing my dog in the kitchen behind closed doors, I sat Hyojin down and then he told me his story.

The frightened kid show me the scar he'd sustained from his recent encounter with a furry fright belonging to his cousin.  Then I proceeded to explain to him how he should behave around dogs when he next encounters them.  Since it was an English lesson we were having,  I also had him pen down his unpleasant experience in an essay.  Thereafter, I texted his mom who expressed her interest to read his first draft.

There she was.  Behind the kitchen door, looking absolutely devastated because she had to be indirectly "punished" for the bad behaviour of another furry friend.  No, I learn from Bear-Bear - there are no bad dogs, just irresponsible owners.  I hope I don't end up as one.

By the way, I'm renaming my Jack Russell.  The kind girls who had found her named her Ponoy after an anime character.  I have a little problem with that.  Owing to the nature of my job, I encouner kids on a daily basis.  The cheeky ones may make fun of her name as it is synonymous with unsavoury materials on the internet and the newstand - do I even have to elaborate on this?   Any suggestions?  My some initial ideas are :

Sprite? - she's a ball of energy around the house.

January Jr.? - My previous dog is called January because like this Jack Russell, I have adopted them both in the first month of the year.

Suggestions from you all?  Please leave them using the comments link below!
