Personal Memory of the September 1982 Tornados of Eau Claire, WI ...

I remember this, I was 6 years old.... but I remember us getting some sort of tornado warning. Because I remember Grandma shooing us all down into the basement. I remember Mom was home, and Grandma, and I think a few uncles but I don't remember who exactly. But I remember she shooed everyone down into the Den downstairs, and I remember Grandpa not coming down. And I'm not sure, but I think Mom was yelling at Grandpa to get inside. I remember I went down to the basement with Grandma but I snuck back up because Grandpa wasn't down there and I don't think my mom was either. I remember going out the side door - the one facing Golf Road, not Rudolph ... and seeing Grandpa out on the sidewalk talking to the neighbor across the street. I remember him yelling something and how he saw the tornado coming down Golf Road .... He turned around and saw me and finally came in the house and downstairs. I remember how dark the room got and how it sounded like there were trains outside but I don't remember being scared. I don't remember there being any damage to our house either?

I found the following article HERE ....

Eau Claire area, WI tornado outbreak, Sept. 1982

Eau Claire taillies cost of 6 twisters
Special to the Journal, AP
Eau Claire, Wis. - Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property was destroyed but injuries were few as tornados and devastating wind storms whipped the Eau Claire area Sunday afternoon and evening.
Eau Claire Police Chief James McFarlane said about $750,000 in damage was done in the city to homes and apartment buildings. Sheriff Larry Jacobsen said a conservative estimate of damage in the rest of the county was $500,000.
Dennis Bennett, Eau Claire County emergency management director, said six tornado touchdowns were confirmed between about 4:15 and about 10 p.m. Sheriff offices said they counted two in Dunn County and one in Chippewa County.
The National Weather Service could only confirm that three tornados touched down. It also reported several airborne funnel clouds.
Bennett had no immediate estimate of damage in the area. He said, however, that at least five homes were destroyed. Scores of others reportedly were damaged.
A spokeswoman for the Northern States Power Co. in Eau Claire, Lynn Moline, said wide areas were without power Monday. She said power should be restored during the day Monday.
Moline reported that power was out on the south side of Eau Claire and the neighboring Town of Washington, areas which took the brunt of the tornados. Power also was out in the west side of the city.
Moline also reported scattered power failures in and near Menomonie, Durand, Mondovi, Boyceville and Downsville.
Harvey Borchers, manager of the Eau Claire exchange of Wisconsin Telephone Co., reported some intermittent problems with phone service.
The damage was widespread and caught many people by surprise.
"We are lucky just to be alive," said Murial Cigan, after looking over the wreckage of her home in the Town of Washington. Cigan and her husband, John, looked out the windows and saw flying debris go past the house.
"It sounded like stuff was hitting the door," she said. "We headed for the basement and just got to the steps when the house was hit. I thought we had it. I couldn't find my husband at first, but he was behind me. It was a relief."
Rick and Brenda Miller, in the house next door, were buried under debris when the tornado struck their split level home.
"We crawled out from underneath, saw the light, and everything was gone," Rick Miller said. "My mouth was full of insulation.
The Miller home was destroyed, along with most of the furnishings, with the exception of a chest of drawers, which was untouched.
"It just came all at once with no warning," Donald Roberts, 63, said. "It was just a beautiful day with no rain or warning, and just out of the clear, bang, it hit."
The tornado that did the most damage struck south of Eau Claire at about 4:30 p.m. It hit in the rural area in the Town of Washington, damaged houses and trees and knocked over a garage as it traveled along Golf Rd. It knocked over a trailer house and severely damaged roofs on several apartment houses and just missed the new Eau Claire South High School.
It then hit the Karen Court area just outside the city limits, where it destroyed three houses and severly [sic] damaged about a dozen others.
It knocked out power in the area as it moved along E. Hamilton Dr. It skipped over the Hillcrest golf course and moved into the city of Altoona where it damaged roofs on four apartment houses and destroyed a duplex owned by Lowell Odegaard.
Another tornado struck south of Menomonie in the Dunville Bottoms area. It destroyed a number of farm buildings.
At about 7:30, a twister struck southwest of Eau Claire along Highway 85. It destroyed a trailer home and garage owned by Loretta Johnson before heavily damaging buildings on the Karl Rieckemann farm.
Another tornado reportedly hit in the Town of Wheaton in southwestern Chippewa County, damaging a number of farm buildings.
A twister was reported near Mondovi in Buffalo County south of Eau Claire. Damage to farm buildings was reported at Wheaton in Chippewa County north of Eau Claire.

Finding Pieces of them Fills my Heart ...

I am enjoying finding little newspaper gems right now ....

5 Aug 1965 ...... This is the Obit of my Great-Grandma (My Mom's Mom's Mom) .. her name was Eva.

My Great-Grandfather Dana died a year and almost two months after my Great-Grandma Eva.  I had talked to my Mom about this and said "awwww he died of a broken heart" and she had told me how he had been really sick, suffering from some sort or infection or something - I'll have to ask her again.   But he didn't really let anyone know.  We had this discussion when we were talking about my Grandmother's sister Beverly.

Oh I found it attached to a picture of him two months before he died:  Dana Wheaton July 1966 - two months before he died, about a year after Eva died. Mom said he bled to death, he had a cut in his throat that was aggravated by some procedure done by the doctors, and no one knew he was slowly bleeding to death. She said they found a lot of tums when they cleaned out his apartment (which he got after selling the house after Eva died)

Regardless .... here is his obituary I found...

I'm not sure what the .... "Deborah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star" is though... something to investigate.    **Looked it up, it's a type of (Chapter of) Freemasonry ...  he was also a Shriner...  see the Freemason blog!

The other little gem I found - which actually broke my heart to find ....   was the obituary of my Uncle Lynn.  He was my Uncle Lance's twin brother.   From what my Grandma had told me - was that the twins were born ( Twins - Lance & Lynn - September 16, 1962 - Lance 4 lbs 1oz and Lynn 4 lbs 2.5 oz ... 12:44/ 12:48 pm ) ... the doctors said Lance was the sicker of the two of them.  They didn't expect him to live.  They had the twins baptized right away.  Then Lynn aspirated and didn't make it.  So they lost the twin they were hoping to take home and got the twin they were preparing to lose.

From what I understood, they got no photos of Lynn.  They wouldn't let them take pictures until Lynn died and so they only got pictures of Lance.  However my Grandmother wrote something on the back of Lance's picture taken shortly after Lynn died that makes me wonder if the photographer may have gotten a photo of him.
This is what she wrote on the back:  "Too bad the twins were too small to take from incubators for picture together on their day old one by photographer who comes in daily in the am" I didn't think there were any pictures of Lynn - and the story was that they finally convinced them to take a picture of Lance once they lost Lynn. Sounds like I misunderstood when Grandma told me that?

Accidental Grandfather ......

So I have been looking up my family on some newspaper sites ....  and I found a few interesting things.  Like - my Grandfather Larry (my Mom's Dad) was prone to car accidents.  These are just two I found - imagine what I haven't! LOL

16 Feb 1962

10 April 1967

I remember my Grandmother would always HIT THE DASHBOARD with her hands or hit the car ceiling with her hands ...  when my Grandpa was driving.  I always thought she was crazy - over reacting - now I understand.   Grandpa had a HISTORY....  LOL...

I got a GIFT today ....

When I opened my mailbox today I got SUCH A GIFT .....  I have a couple photos of my Grandparents (on my Mom's side) ....  but I'm not sure where they are right now.  My Mom had brought over a few things for me to scan of my grandparents, including a couple photos of my Grandmother.

But today ..... I got a gift .... photos of my Grandfather who I had this major bond with ....

My Grandpa was adopted ... his parents, William and Olga Thalacker had both contracted Tuberculosis while Olga was pregnant with my Grandfather.  My Grandfather was born in July of 1921 and William died in November.  My Great-Grandmother wasn't allowed to keep the baby, she thought she was dying.   William had set things up with his sister, Lucy.

Louise "Lucy" Magdaline Thalacker was born January 3, 1889, in the town of Albany, Pepin County, Wisconsin and she died on June 25, 1951.   (Can I put a note in here that my birthday is June 25th! Eeps!)  .... She married Gail Day on the 15th of September in 1915 in Eau Claire, WI ... and they made their home in Rock Falls, Dunn County, Wisconsin.  Gail operated a meat locker business.  Gail was born April 7, 1891 in Rock Creek Township, Dunn County, Wisconsin and died on June 6, 1964.  Both Lucy and Gail died in Rock Falls.

The house they had still stands in Rock Falls.

Lucy and Gail adopted my Grandfather, in 1922.  He was their only child.   He loved them greatly.  So much that he and my grandmother buried the son that they lost, Lynn, at their feet.

My Grandmother was born on May 5, 1922 .....  I often laugh because my Mom was born Feb. 2, 1955.  5-5-22... 2-2-55 ....

Anyway - my Grandmother, Berneil Eva Wheaton, was born in Bridge Creek, Wisconsin.  (Augusta)...  my grandparents got married on June 10, 1949.

I know that my Grandmother and Grandfather - both - served in the military during World War II.  I remembering once, asking what my Grandmother did, and she told me that she typed ....   I'm not sure the extent of my Grandfather's service.  Hopefully one of my family members does.

You know how they tell you in school to ASK your grandparents about their past .....  well, you really need to.  Before it's to late.   At this point, I really regret not prying more ...... asking more questions, and learning as much as I could .....

It's funny when it excites you when you find out that your Great-Grandfather (adopted) had a meat locker business - because it's something you never know that.....

My Grandparents had 9 children.  I also know that my Grandmother had at least one miscarriage, but I believe it was more than one.

Dana  ....   he is married with two children.  His son just recently got married...
Melayne (my mom) ....  has me, I'm married with four kids and one step-daughter
Ricki ... he has one daughter
Randy .... he is married with four children
Clark ....  he is married with three children (and many step-kids, I think five?) ... his oldest daughter is married with one son
Lance .... he is married with two boys, one of them is married with three kids...
Lynn ..... he was Lance's twin brother who died at 2 days old.  My Grandparents were told Lance was the weaker of the two, and they needed to get him baptized right away.  So they got someone in to baptize them ... and Lynn was the one that passed.  He ended up aspirating :(
Peter ..... he is married and has two children
Tracy ....  he has five girls...  two of which have two children of their own....

So ....... they had nine kids, eight of which survived ....  20 Grandchildren (I feel like I'm missing some?) ... and so far...... 11 Great Grandchildren ....

Anyway - I totally got off what I was even doing.  I wanted to share the photos I got of my Grandfather.

First, here are two of my Grandmother........ Berneil
Here are the photos I got of my Grandfather ..... Lawrence

And with that - I am going to bed!
