Pumpkin Pick'n

Visiting a pumpkin patch is always a fun outing.  It's even more fun when the pumpkin patch is in your very own backyard!

Yesterday I decided that the pumpkins I'd been so lovingly caring for all summer were ready to pick!

Even though I planted late this year I had surprising good luck!

I planted only two types this year, pumpkin pie sized ones and tiny ones (my favorite)

Pumpkins are so easy to grow I'm always grateful this time of year that I took the time to plant some.  With only a few plants in all I normally have more pumpkins than I know what to do with.

I'm off to play with my pumpkins,

Bye now!

Plant Stand Love

I love the fact that a simple item can make such a difference in a room.

Take this tiny corner in my dinning room for instance.

My one and only house plant has been sitting in this corner for quite some time now, just hanging out on a simple stool  - - nothing fancy, but I thought nice enough.

Add an actual plant stand and WOW!!,

magically the room looks ten times better.

(and so does the plant, which honestly is looking a little haggard)

The plant stand was a thrift store find that I couldn't pass up for two dollars.

Truth be told, I almost didn't get it thinking to myself the stool I was using worked just fine.

But after a coat of paint and a little distressing, the stand is now something I "NEED"!

Makes this simple corner in the dinning room just a little more pretty so we can enjoy these last few days of summer with a little class - - LOL.

Oh and in case your wondering, the plant itself is an asparagus fern that I started growing last summer and brought in over the winter - - it's been a house plant ever since.

Hope your all having a wonderful week!

Eight day's and counting til all three of my kiddos will be back in school full time...

Mommy is looking forward to it!

Bye now,

Robin

Garden Tour - Backyard Edition

This might not be the best time of the year to show off by backyard and garden since not a whole lot is in bloom and things are starting to get "crispy" looking like it tends to get in late August.

But I figures "why not", since I talked about it so much during the early summer months.

You may remember I was attempting to revamp the garden by removing plants I didn't want and adding or moving still others to make it flow a little better.

It's still not to where I'd like it to be but it's much, much closer than it was three months ago and it has given me hope for the future.

Instead of taking photos I put together a quick video for you. . . enjoy!

Bye Now!

Favorite Long Blooming Perennials and Shrubs

Morning!

Like for many of you, my garden takes as much of my time during the summer months as it can get.  Most day's spending time watering and weeding somehow doesn't feel like work at all.

Throughout my scattered garden beds I've come to rely on a few plants to add interest and color month after month with minimal effort on my part.

Today I'm like to share my favorite long blooming plants with you.

I've come up with four favorites that my garden feel empty without.

#1:  Hydrangea's

Not a big surprise on this one I'm guessing.  Hydrangea's seem to be a favorite of so many of us.  With good reason!

Hydrangea's fill in big chunks of space, bloom for a long time - often changing colors in the meantime, and if you can bring yourself to do it; make great cut flowers.

Throughout my backyard I have a total nine Hydrangea's in three varieties:

Annabelle
Limelight
Forever and Ever

Once I figure out a place for more you can bet I'd add more without any hesitation at all!

Here you can see my "Limelight" Hydrangea is just starting to bloom - - so exciting!

#2:  Knock Out Roses and Carpet Roses

For years I stayed as far away from Roses as I could get after hearing stories about how much time they took to maintain but then I as introduced to Knock Out Roses and it was all over.  It didn't take me long to add Carpet Roses into the mix.

I now grow a total of nine gorgeous plants between the two varieties ranging in color from the palest pink to a hot pink almost red color.  Unfortunately, I didn't write down the plant names so I can't tell you for sure which variety I have planted.

The thing a like the most about these two plants are first there size:  Ranging from one to four feet tall they are the perfect size for my garden.

And secondly: Their bloom time.  My plants start blooming by the end of May and continue all the way into October or whenever we receive our first hard frost.

Yes the thorn's are a little troublesome at times, but nothing one can't overcome.  LOL.

#3:  Tickseed

I purchased my first Tickseed three years ago and it instantly became a favorite.  The variety I have in my garden in called "Zagreb Threadleaf Tickseed.

Let me just say this plant is amazing.
Super hardy and covered in pretty yellow flowers from spring til fall it's just gorgeous.  I grows about two to three feet tall and just as wide and it's steams have an airy, wispy look to them up close . . . but don't be fooled, this plant is strong.

I love it's rounded shape, which looks like a perfectly pruned shrub when not in bloom.

The best thing about this plant I think is the fact that you don't have to do much more than water it and it's a happy camper.  No pruning necessary!

Did I mention how hardy it is?
Every two years or so I have to split the plant otherwise it dies out in the middle a little.  I have found that it works best to water down at the soil level because it's such a full plant it tends to get a little floppy over time if it gets too waterlogged.

#4:  Potentilla

Potentilla's in my opinion are the most overlooked long blooming shrub around.

There are so many sizes and colors of this shrub, there is sure to be one that will work in any garden to provide summer long color.

Once established in your garden this shrub is there to stay.

I prefer the smaller varieties.  They have a rounded, compact shape that is the perfect size to use in a mixed garden bed.

I currently only have one of these plants and it has been amazing for the past four years.  A little shaping in the spring is all it needs to keep itself looking pretty.

I think I've found a spot for a couple more in my backyard but the white variety is hard to find in my area for some reason.  I'm on the lookout though.

So there you have it, my top four long blooming plants I  couldn't do without.

Hope you enjoyed,

Bye now,

Front Yard In June

The front yard garden in June is looking green and lush.

Gone are the tulips and creeping phlox of May.

Instead we are playing a waiting game until the next rounds of perennials start to bloom.

Thankfully the lady's mantel starts to bloom to add a contrasting green color to the mix.

But my love this time of year is the snow on the mountain that I have mass planted under the tree.  It's taken a couple years for it to fill in the area I wanted to cover but now it's looking amazing.

To me, it steals the show this time of year.

Always a big fan of this tough little plant I was first drawn to it by it's variegated leaves and how bright it made a shade spot look in my mothers garden.

Then I started growing some of my own and soon discovered just how fabulous it really is.

They come up early in spring, have a great spreading habit, and quickly cover up the bare ground.
The best thing about this plant is their ability to take a trampling my kids and dog.  They spring back within a day or two.
Also, come early August when everything here in Minnesota is looking a little crispy a simple haircut with make them bounce right back.

They even get these sweet little flowers on them that remind me so much of Queen Anne's Lace (the weed that grows crazy along our roadways-which I have a habit of picking every year then running off like I did something wrong)

How about you?

Which show stopper in your garden is giving you joy today?
