A man who embarked on a shooting spree in what he claimed was retaliation for 9/11 has been executed at a prison in Texas.
The lone survivor of Mark Stroman's attack on convenience store workers in late 2001, Rais Bhuiyan, originally from Bangladesh, unsuccessfully sued to stop the execution, saying his religious beliefs as a Muslim required him to forgive the man. The courts denied his request.
Stroman, 41, had said hate in the world needed to end and asked for God's grace shortly before the fatal drugs began flowing into his arms. He was pronounced dead less than an hour after his final court appeal was rejected.
Stroman claimed the shooting spree that killed two men and injured a third targeted people from the Middle East, though all three victims were from south Asia. It was the death of 49-year-old Vasudev Patel, from India, that put Stroman on death row. He was also charged but not tried in the shooting death of Waqar Hasan, 46, a Pakistani immigrant who moved to Dallas in 2001 to open a convenience store.
Stroman's execution was the eighth this year in Texas. At least eight other inmates have execution dates in the coming weeks.

The men and women who live and work on those properties say they’re under attack from the same drug cartels blamed for thousands of murders in Mexico.
“It’s a war, make no mistake about it,” Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples said. “And it’s happening on American soil.”
Texas farmers and ranchers produce more cotton and more cattle than any other state, so Staples is concerned this war could eventually impact our food supply, and calls it a threat to our national security.
“Farmers and ranchers are being run off their own property by armed terrorists showing up and telling them they have to leave their land,” Staples said.

FORT BLISS, Texas -- A person opened fire Monday at a convenience store on Fort Bliss, injuring two people before being killed by responding officers, the commander of the West Texas Army post said.
Col. Joseph A. Simonelli Jr. declined to discuss the conditions of the victims or other details of the shooting. Simonelli said the area was roped off for an FBI investigation, but the sprawling facility next to El Paso never was under lockdown.

SAN ANTONIO -- U.S. Border Patrol agents fired gunshots into Mexico after coming under attack during a half-ton drug bust and giving chase to a truck along the Rio Grande, U.S. authorities said Monday.
No Border Patrol agents were hurt during the "fire fight" early Saturday in Mission, agency spokeswoman Rosalinda Huey said. She did not say whether Border Patrol gunfire hit anyone, citing the ongoing investigation.
"The firing they received came from the Mexican side," Huey said...
It was at least the second time in three months that Border Patrol agents in Texas have fired into Mexico. In June, a Border Patrol agent fatally shot a 15-year-old Mexican boy after authorities say a group trying to illegally enter Texas threw rocks at officers near downtown El Paso.
Reports of bullets whizzing across the border from Mexico also are on the rise. At least eight bullets have been fired into El Paso in the last few weeks from the rising violence in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, where drug violence has killed more than 4,000 people since 2009, making it one of the deadliest cities in the world.

For the Afghan soldiers who have gone AWOL from an Air Force base in Texas, there's no place like Canada.
Since 2002, 46 Afghans have deserted their armed forces while in the U.S. for language and military training. Of those 46, roughly half--at least 22--have found their way north of the border.
They made the trip with the help of a network of people, including Afghans who left Lackland Air Force Base before them; a group of naturalized and undocumented Mexican women in Texas; relatives of current and former Afghan military students living in the West; and at least one Iranian taxi driver who runs a human smuggling business at the Canadian border.
The Afghans who have made it to Canada appear to be living comfortably there -- and many have put themselves on Facebook, where they connect with other Afghan dissenters and active U.S. and Afghan military personnel, including members of the Afghan military currently attending the Defense Language Institute at Lackland or receiving training at other military bases in the U.S.

DALLAS: A Pakistani-born mother accused of strangling her two young children told an emergency operator she killed them because they were autistic and she wanted “normal kids,” according to a tape released Wednesday.
Irving police released the recording after Saiqa Akhter was charged with one count of capital murder in the strangling of her 5-year-old son, Zain Akhter, at the family’s apartment Monday night. Police spokesman David Tull said another capital murder charge is pending in the slaying of her 2-year-old daughter, Faryaal Akhter, who died Tuesday night.
Police say the mother called emergency services after attacking the children. In the recording, the woman identifies herself as Saiqa Akhter and repeatedly tells the operator she killed her two children, describing how she first tried to poison them, then later strangled them with some type of wire. At one point during the recording, the woman hangs up and the dispatcher calls her back.
“I killed them. I killed both of them,” she told the operator. Later, she explained that both children were lying motionless on the bed in the master bedroom.
“They are not doing anything. They are just blue and they are not taking any breaths and ... their heart is not beating,” she said.
She told the operator she initially tried to poison the children with bathroom cleaner but they refused to drink it. When that didn’t work, “I used a wire on their necks,” she said.

Mexico gunmen 'kill 19' in rehab centre raid

Gunmen have stormed a rehabilitation centre in a Mexican city, shooting dead 19 people and wounding at least four others, police say.
The killings happened in the northern city of Chihuahua, about 210 miles (350km) south of Ciudad Juarez and the border with El Paso, Texas...
One report said up to 30 gunmen were involved in the attack.
Chihuahua state police spokesman Fidel Banuelos said the attackers had left messages accusing the victims of being criminals.
The attack took place on Thursday night, but has only just been reported.
An unnamed police official told AFP news agency that "more than 30 gunmen arrived aboard six trucks".
They moved to the second floor of the Templo Cristiano Fe y Vida (Christian Faith and Life Temple) and fired large-calibre weapons at patients and employees before fleeing, the official said.

MEXICO CITY-It's one of the safest parts of America, and it's getting safer.
It's the U.S.-Mexico border, and even as politicians say more federal troops are needed to fight rising violence, government data obtained by The Associated Press show it actually isn't so dangerous after all.
The top four big cities in America with the lowest rates of violent crime are all in border states: San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso and Austin, according to a new FBI report. And an in-house Customs and Border Protection report shows that Border Patrol agents face far less danger than street cops in most U.S. cities.
The Customs and Border Protection study, obtained with a Freedom of Information Act request, shows 3 percent of Border Patrol agents and officers were assaulted last year, mostly when assailants threw rocks at them. That compares with 11 percent of police officers and sheriff's deputies assaulted during the same period, usually with guns or knives.
In addition, violent attacks against agents declined in 2009 along most of the border for the first time in seven years. So far this year assaults are slightly up, but data is incomplete.
"The border is safer now than it's ever been," said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Lloyd Easterling.
He said one factor is that with fewer jobs available amid the U.S. recession, illegal immigration has dropped. And responding to security concerns after 9-11, the Border Patrol has doubled the number of agents in the region since 2004.
Nonetheless, border lawmakers and governors say their region is under siege and needs more troops.
"Violence in the vicinity of the U.S.-Mexico border continues to increase at an alarming rate. We believe that this violence represents a serious threat to the national security of the United States as well as a serious threat to U.S. citizens that live along the 1,969-mile long border," a dozen bipartisan members of Congress from border states wrote President Obama..

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick entered the Michigan state prison system today after being sentenced to 1½ to five years for violating his probation.
His imprisonment, imposed today by Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner, also cost Kilpatrick his job.
“Kwame Kilpatrick will be off the Compuware Corporation payroll at the end of the month," said a company statement. "We don’t have any choices. It’s an unfortunate situation, and we feel bad for his family, but our hands are tied.”
Leaders across metro Detroit also called the situation unfortunate, but they said it was time to move on.
Earlier, a frustrated Groner ordered Kilpatrick to serve 18 months to five years in prison, declaring that Kilpatrick had lied while on probation and maliciously hid money that was supposed to go toward repaying the City of Detroit $1 million in restitution.
“Your testimony in this court amounted to perjury,” Groner said, alluding to the ex-mayor’s explanations for how hundreds of thousands of dollars passed through his family’s bank accounts without being accounted for, or applied to, Kilpatrick’s restitution obligations.

Texas police warn spring breakers: Stay out of Mexico border towns

Mexico is a much worse place to go than some countries that are having major conflicts with Radical Islamists !
(CNN) -- The Texas Department of Public Safety took the unprecedented step Thursday of telling college students not to visit Mexican border cities during spring break because they are just too dangerous.
Several universities issued similar warnings last year, but this was the first time the Texas law enforcement agency had issued the specific advisory against travel, said spokeswoman Tela Mange. In the past, she said, Texas authorities had just urged students to be careful.
"Because of the increased violence, we decided to step it up a little bit and say, 'Parents, bad idea,'" Mange said.
DPS Director Steven C. McCraw said, "Parents should not allow their children to visit these Mexican cities because their safety cannot be guaranteed."
The State Department renewed a travel alert to Mexico last month, citing increased violence in the country -- border areas in particular.
"Recent violent attacks have caused the U.S. Embassy to urge U.S. citizens to delay unnecessary travel to parts of Michoacan, Durango, Coahuila and Chihuahua ... and to advise U.S. citizens residing or traveling in those areas to exercise extreme caution," the alert says.

It's called a do-over. A mulligan. An oops-let's-try-this-again play.
The mistake the court made last February was trusting former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to get out of jail, move to Texas and begin paying the city the $1 million he owed in restitution. (The prosecutor didn't trust him, but that's Kym Worthy's job. After all, she got him convicted of perjury.)
All Judge David Groner did Wednesday was treat Kilpatrick like the convicted felon he is. Groner made clear that Kilpatrick could not be trusted. He made clear that the last bit of special treatment Kilpatrick got, whenever it was, was the last special treatment he would get.
And as nice as Groner was to Kilpatrick's attorney, uber-barrister Willie Gary, and as patient as Groner was sitting through endless irrelevant testimony about how Kilpatrick and his wife spent money, Groner's bottom line was: "Let's count the money" that should have gone to the city.
The tally? More than $319,000 -- now due in 90 days. Groner also made clear that the former mayor will pay the city all of the discount restitution he owes, stemming from an $8.4-million whistle-blower lawsuit settlement that never should have happened.
You will get no more details here. Groner's comments will be all over this newspaper, our Web site and television.
But what you will get here is a sigh of relief that Groner did what should have been done in the first place. When a politician becomes a felon, he is no longer a politician. He is no longer royalty. He is no longer to be afforded a wink and a nod. The former mayor now has deadlines. And he has duties. He must reach out and touch his probation officer in Michigan, instead of Texas, by phone every week.
Kilpatrick walked into the courthouse as the arrogant young politician, still acting like da mayor. He walked out, a convicted felon with no more special privileges. It was a fitting irony that he found no car waiting at the sidewalk and had to walk back inside to wait for a ride to the airport.
If Kilpatrick had just paid the restitution, all of it, a year ago, instead of flaunting his luxurious lifestyle in Texas (the mansion, the SUVs, the hundreds of dollars spent at car washes and Chick-fil-A), Detroit might already have been a distant memory for him. If Kilpatrick truly wants Detroit to leave him alone, then he should leave Detroit alone.
Maybe now, he'll just write the check.

Federal investigators moved to seize four mosques in the US and a skyscraper in Manhattan yesterday over their alleged financial aid to Iran, in an extraordinary step likely to worsen relations between Washington and Tehran.
Prosecutors in Manhattan filed a civil complaint in the federal court seeking the forfeiture of more than $500m in assets of the Alavi Foundation, which describes itself as a charitable foundation, and a company, Assa.
The mosques are in New York City, Maryland, California and Texas.
Prosecutors claim that the foundation and the company have been engaged in money laundering, with the cash sent back to Tehran.
The move could be designed to punish the Tehran government at time when its relations with the US are already strained over Iran's alleged nuclear weapons programme.
But the Obama administration also risks incurring the anger of American Muslims if the mosques, all Shia, are seized. The takeover of mosques would also raise constitutional questions around the right of freedom to religion.
