Islamists looted and burned a Protestant church in Algeria, the congregation's leader said Monday, suggesting they were inspired by a recent wave of religious intolerance in the Arab and Muslim world. [...]

The independent El Watan daily published a picture of a smoldering pile of pulpits and desks that had been brought outside for destruction. It quoted the pastor of the local Pentecostal community, Mustapha Krireche, as saying worshippers fled the temple because local police had left a gathering of anti-Christian rioters unchecked.

The congregation was worshipping in the apartment block because it had not received official government approval to operate a church.

No one was hurt in the latest upsurge of violence which saw two churches firebombed and a third dubbed with black paint in a row sparked by a court decision allowing non-Muslims to use the word "Allah" in place of God in their literature and worship.

Four other churches in Kuala Lumpur were firebombed on Friday and Saturday amid outrage in the Muslim-majority country over the court's move to overturn a government prohibition on the use of Allah by Christians when using the Malay language.

Hundreds of worshippers from one of the churches that was partially destroyed last week gathered for a service at a makeshift prayer hall and urged an end to the violence.

Earlier a petrol bomb was hurled at the All Saints Church in Taping, in central Perak state, before worshippers arrived. The building was not badly damaged, but scorch marks were found in the hall.

At St Louis Catholic Church, also in Taping, a broken bottle of petrol with a wick was discovered. It failed to explode. In the southern Malacca state the outer wall of a Baptist church was splashed with paint.

Egyptian Muslim leaders are caught in a storm of controversy after a human rights group confronted them about a fatwa (Islamic edict) that stated the building of a church is “a sin against God.”.[...]

The controversy began when the president of the Egyptian Union Human Rights Organization, Dr. Naguib Gabraeel, asked the Fatwa Council about a statement found in a textbook at Cairo University on inheritance and execution of wills.

Students, both Muslims and Christians, were taught “it is forbidden for a person to donate money for what would lead to sin, such as donating in his will money towards build[ing] a church, a nightclub, a gambling casino, towards promoting the alcohol industry or for building a barn for rearing pigs, cats or dogs.”

Gabraeel asked the council what the sharia (Islamic law) position on the statement found in the textbook is. He asked if it is forbidden for a Muslim to donate money to build a church or a monk’s quarters even if it is in the name of God and Christianity, which is recognized by the country’s constitution. The Egyptian constitution claims to respect religious freedom. He also noted that wealthy Coptic Christian businessmen have donated towards the building of mosques.

The council replied by affirming the law found in the textbook and issuing a fatwa on it.

A PORTUGESE cardinal has warned Roman Catholic women against marrying Muslim men.

"Be careful with love. Think twice before marrying a Muslim, think seriously because it brings loads of hassle - and even Allah can't say where all that will end,'' Jose Policarpo, the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, said during a public debate.

"When you recognise what a young European of Christian upbringing is subjected to, given Muslim attitudes to women, the first time she goes to their countries, we can imagine what that entails.

"You can only dialogue with someone who is willing to dialogue. With our Muslim brothers, for example, dialogue is very difficult,'' he said.

Christian-Muslim strains flare at Cairo church

CAIRO, Egypt: Early in the morning two Sundays ago, hundreds of Christian Egyptians quietly slipped into a former underwear factory where they had discreetly set up a church and held their first service. Bells rang and hymns were sung.

A crowd of angry Muslims quickly gathered, threw stones at the building and burned banners that said, "No to the church." They tried to storm the gates, clashed with police and chanted, "The church has fallen, the priest is dead," according to witnesses.

In fact, no one died, but 13 people were reported injured. For Egyptians in general, the incident in the blue-collar district of Ain Shams served as a warning that Muslim-Christian clashes, largely confined to the south of the country in recent years, have seeped into the capital.

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (BosNewsLife)-- Christians in southern Somalia faced more tensions Thursday, October 2, after two people were injured when their house church was attacked, for a second time, by Muslim militants, rights investigators said.

The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) with Website www.persecution.org told BosNewsLife that it learned this week that two church elders were injured when a Muslim mob attacked the church in Tayeglow, 200 miles (320 miles) outside the capital Mogadishu.

"Dozens of Muslims, including children and women, demolished the church and attacked the Christians worshipping at the church with spears, machetes, sticks and stones. Two elders of the church, suffered serious injuries as a result of the attack," the group told BosNewsLife in a statement.

It said the violence was apparemtly in response to the Christian conversion of the only son of a prominent Muslim religious leader in the district. "This is the second time that Muslim extremists targeted the church for attack. In the first attack, which took place in 2007, a Muslim gunman opened fire on the Christians at the church and seriously wounded the pastor," ICC said.
