accepting grace :: guest post with Claire Deering

I am so honored to share this post with you guys today - it's written by my best friend since High School, a woman who inspires me so deeply. She has the most powerful testimony and this past fall the Lord blessed she and her husband with a beautiful son. Claire is an amazing writer so I asked her to share a piece on motherhood and I have been saving it special for mothers day weekend. I love her words and pray it blesses you guys too…thank you Claire for being so honest and bold to share your heart with us!

At 33, I became a mom. That's about a decade later than my younger self would've wanted, but like all great gifts, my son came at the perfect time.

That thought dawned on me as I squeezed the final drops out of my rosemary mint shampoo this morning. I had bought this very bottle the morning before I went into labor. It was a weird impulse purchase--it makes my hair frizzy--but I just needed. to. have. it.

Call it one final pregnancy craving.

For an hour that September night, I sat in the tub waiting for my contractions to get close enough to make "the call." Just as the water turned tepid, it dawned on me that I had not washed my hair in a few days, and I would soon be surrounded by well-wishers and have a baby to care for.

I must wash it now.

I'm not sure if that's being practical or vain, but I scooted my big belly down far enough in the water to scrub my hair between contractions, which raced from five to three minutes apart before I could put any conditioner in there. Water sloshed on the floor, and rosemary and mint filled the air.

On the other side of the wall, my husband was sleeping soundly. Not because he wouldn't want to be there for me or help me wash my hair or count the minutes between contractions, but because I didn't wake him.

I couldn't bring myself to do it, even though I secretly wanted his help, needed his help. I guess, if I'm honest, I wanted him to sense my need without asking. There's a certain level of trust and humility required in asking and then receiving. And, I'm not very good with either.

I love when God gently speaks the same thing, over and over, until it starts to sink in. This article has haunted me all week. Here's the gist: A fisherman falls overboard at 3:30 a.m. in the middle of the Atlantic and survives to tell the tale. Even though he's missing for hours before anyone notices. Even though it defies every odd.

When I first finished reading it, I completely missed the point. I convinced myself the story was a metaphor--how this strong fisherman survives by setting goals (find a buoy) and staying positive (don't think about death).  It seemed like good advice, so I gave myself a pep talk and worked a little harder.

This new burst lasted as long as nap time did--27 minutes--before I failed at my first goal of putting the laundry away, which in turn led me to break that second part.

But still this survivor's story stayed with me. So I read it again. And there it was, so obvious I couldn't believe I hadn't seen it: he's determined, a self-proclaimed hard worker, and he's alone on that ship deck in the middle of the night because he refuses to wake anyone for help; in fact, he prides himself on not needing anyone.

That's not heroic, it's foolish.

And it sounds just like me.

But, the part that really gnaws at me is that he seems almost nonchalant about his miraculous rescue: “I always felt like I was conditioning myself for that situation...so once you’re in it, it’s like: All right, I can do that. I did it. I had that sense of accomplishment. I mean, thank God I was saved, yes.... But I felt I did my part.”

Good Lord, man. They plucked your body from shark-infested waters thirteen hours after you fell in. If that's not grace, I don't know what is.

I think it is always easier to see someone else's Achilles heel.

So, last night, when my husband asked if there was anything he could do to help with the baby, I said yes. And, today I am washing my hair with that rosemary mint shampoo one final time while they play together in the family room.

I would guess that most of us who have a hard time accepting grace or asking for help, have at one time or another been a survivor. Maybe out of necessity, maybe out of pride. But as I look at my sweet baby boy--grace personified--I realize that unless I learn to receive grace I will teach my son to resist it. Or worse, to miss it when it comes.

I'm only four months in--hardly an expert--but I see that motherhood is my second-chance to learn what I missed along the way. Or maybe--better said--to unlearn things I learned along the way.

And, if that's not grace, I don't know what is.

leather headband with The Merrythought

You guys I am so excited about todays guest post with Caitlin from The Merrrythought. I have been huge fans of the  girls behind this incredibly inspiring blog for a really long time and was first introduced to them through the Ten on Ten project - they are seriously some of the most beautiful, talented women and I know you will adore their blog if you haven't found it already. True eye candy almost everyday of the week over there!! Caitlin is showing us how to make this adorable leather headband today and I am honored to host her here!

Hey! My name is Caitlin, I am a vintage loving, craftmaking lady that spends a lot of time behind a camera. I share a lot of pictures, projects and thoughts over on The Merrythought, where I blog with Manda and Marla! I am so excited to be here on Rebekah's blog to share a quick DIY beaded leather headband today!

What you need:

Leather

Leather lace

Beads

Needle and thread

Scissors

Mod Podge and brush

How to make it: Cut a piece of leather 12" x 1.25"  and lay out a design with beads that will fit in that space. (Sketching out your idea ahead of time will help.) Use your needle and thread to sew the beads in place. For bigger beads you will have to go through the leather between each bead and smaller ones you might be able to get away with stringing a few on the thread before stitching it back through the leather.

Cut four 19" pieces of leather lace. Use a dab of Mod Podge at each end of the beaded leather to help hold two pieces of the leather lace per side. Cut two pieces of leather .75" x 1.25". (I used the same type of leather as I did for my main band but I used the back side of it to add some contrast.)

Use another dab of Mod Podge to secure this over the pieces of leather lace. Once the Mod Podge has dried, use your needle and thread to stitch an X over the piece for extra support.

Tie it and wear it!

Thank you so much for being here today Caitlin and a huge kiss to your whole team over at The Merrythought you guys are definitely on my blog crush list! xo, Rebekah

sponsor spotlight :: an interview with Brachel Boulevard + etsy giftcard giveaway!

I am so excited to welcome Rachel from Brachel Boulevard here today and to introduce you to her darling blog! She is a mother of two living abroad with her sweet husband Brandon, currently in Barcelona. She writes about their adventures together and shares fun recipes and craft ideas with lots of pictures of her adorable kids! I did a little interview with Rachel so that we could get to know her a bit more...and make sure to check out the fun giveaway at the bottom. Rachel is generously offering one reader a $25 gift card to Etsy. There are just about a million things I could think of to buy with one of those! OK without further ado, here is miss Rachel:

1. What is the name of your blog and the passion behind why you write it?

Our blog name is Brachel Boulevard. The term "Brachel", our self-proclaimed "celebrity couple" name, started as a joke. (Brandon + Rachel=Brachel) 4 years, 2 children and 14 countries later, it has come to represent all of the amazing things we have done together as a couple.

Our blog is our journal. We write about our travels, our ups & downs, our lives as a whole. I am a history major so I am passionate about preservation. Our blog is the way we reserve our memories.

2. Tell us a bit about yourself and your family

I'm a twenty something bookworm with a wanderlust that will never be fulfilled. Luckily, my husband has been infected with that same wanderlust. Brandon is a numbers guys, a cancer survivor and amputee. He is an inspiration to me and our children. Corbin is three and loves all things super heroes. Elizabeth is our little princess that is very attached to her Mommy (which I love most of the time).

3. A favorite date night memory with your sweetie

Brandon found a new exhibit at a museum that played music and had the words of the songs rotate around the room. We went on a date to the museum, spent the majority of the time looking at beautiful paintings and then he brought me into this music exhibit room, and started slow dancing with me.  We were the only ones in the room, and it was super romantic. He has yet to top that date!

4. A favorite indulgence

Some of you are gonna laugh at this but it's totally Regency novels! Ha ha I can sit down start reading a Regency novel & forget to make dinner! When I read, I indulge, I don't stop until it's done.

5. What countries have you lived in and which one is your favorite/why?

We have lived in the US, Belgium, & are currently living in Spain. The US will always be home but I must say Spain is making it's way up the ranks!

6. One thing you are looking forward to this Fall?

The sound of crunching leaves under my feet. It's the simple things like that that make me smile! :)

<<---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->>

So fun to get to know you a bit Rachel - that date night sounds pretty dreamy for sure! Thank you so much for being here today it's a joy to find new blog friends!

Easy Travel Tips (Guest Post)

My family is getting ready for the annual Gough Summer vacation coming up in a few days - it's always so nice to have all the details and location and stay taken care of for us by my Mother and Father in law but packing and food planning and house sitters and dog sitters with a house full of kids...it's a lot of work to make sure the whole thing goes off without a hitch. Today I have a special guest post from reader, Kendra Thornton - a guru in all things travel planning she wanted to share her top five easy travel tips with me and I thought it would be fun to share with you too just in case you're getting ready for a vacation of your own! Take it away Kendra and thanks so much for these!!

Being in charge of your next family getaway can seem a little intimidating, but it’s really nothing a globe-trotting mom like you can’t handle with a little strategic planning.  The Internet is full of valuable information and user-friendly booking tools, so you already have access to every resource you need to come up with an amazing itinerary.  The key to turning it all into a dream holiday that works equally well for sophisticated adults and rambunctious kids is the tough part, but don’t panic just yet. Following the five smart travel tips below can help you plan an unforgettable trip that goes off without a hitch from the second you start planning to the day you come home.

1. Break up your planning schedule into smaller, more manageable steps. Taking care of one thing at a time is the best way to control your stress levels before any family travel trip.  Referring to old lists or looking up example lists on the Internet can help stimulate your brain to whole categories you may have forgotten. Write out a step-by-step planning and packing guide to stay on track. Don’t forget your list of must do’s as well – including lawn maintenance and pet sitting. To make packing a breeze, try Apple’s Packing Pro app.

2. Use trip reports and reviews to find the best destinations and deals. One of the biggest benefits to online travel forums and social media websites is being able to tap into an endless stream of feedback from other explorers.  Reviews are great for narrowing down your choices for accommodations and attractions while message boards are ideal for planning your itinerary and getting personalized advice.  I use Gogobot, which allows me to connect with other mothers in my social network and see where they’ve gone and what they’ve thought.  Their list of Walt Disney Orlando hotels was a great way for my family of five to find our ideal accommodation equipped with a huge pool for our family of swimmers. Remember that you need to pick a destination that will make everyone happy, so be ready to compromise.  If you want a tropical paradise but your kids are looking for an adventure, opt for a family friendly resort in a relaxing beach location.

3. Choose pretty and practical luggage.  With a family in tow, you don’t want to struggle with bulky suitcases.  To keep your luggage organized without getting weighed down, break it up into a few smaller suitcases and bags.  With designs that range from summer stripes to multi-colored patterns, tote bags are the perfect accessory for on-the-go moms who like to travel in style.  Use yours to store anything you need to carry with you on the plane or while you are exploring including wallet, keys, cell phone, diapers and an extra shirt for everyone on the trip.

4. Pack clothes that fit your itinerary. While you do want to look great on vacation, it’s extremely important to pack clothes that are going to be functional.  With so many different choices available in stores and online, you don’t need to choose between comfort and style - you can have both!  Clothes that can double as different outfits are especially useful when you have limited space.  For example, a long wrap skirt can work as both a flattering bathing suit cover-up during the day and a beautiful maxi dress at night. Scarves can also serve a variety of purposes – from a pillow on the plane to a sassy belt for your new jeans.

5) Distraction Attractions Keeping small children occupied during a long flight requires some ingenious planning. Consider a portable DVD player along with a combination of favorite movies. Perhaps purchase a few new ones for the trip or check out the selection at your local library. The chance to watch something new and different helps keep young attention spans fully engaged. If your child relies on a bedtime movie before they go to sleep, make sure to bring a portable DVD player on your trip, as the DVDs from your homecountry may not be compatible with international players.

June 1st and some silhouette plates....

So wow is it really June 1st today?? Holy smokes folks that last month was a blur for me. Was it for you too? I am getting all prepped and ready to make a re-entry on the interwebs next week. My long break was much needed but I am missing this space so I will be here monday with a new craft to share...just something easy of course.

I can't believe my oldest is going to be six in a few weeks and my baby will be one month on sunday. Time is flying, summer is coming and I feel my shaky legs learning the ropes of how to manage a household as a mommy to four little ones.

I am making a brief appearance today too over on the Beautifully Rooted blog sharing this super simple and fun project for silhouette plates. If you would like the full tutorial head over HERE.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! xoxo

make something monday :: embroidered cork trivet

Hello and happy Monday friends! We had an insanely busy weekend over here. I had the pleasure of teaching class all day at Fusion Beads here in Seattle on Saturday which is always so much fun, and then on Sunday morning we left our house bright and early (6:30am) with all three kids in tow and made our way to Church for most of the day to do the music. When we got home yesterday after 3pm I was so pooped and happy that we managed to survive such a full schedule!

I also had the pleasure of meeting some of my new favorite blogger friends, The Ravenna Girls for a cupcake and coffee this weekend. I have had such fun getting to know Brianne and Danielle the past few months in person, they are such a treat! They blessed our kids with some fun hand-me-down bean bag chairs (the kids LOVE them!) and they also gifted me this gorgeous post for this mornings make something monday feature! I am so excited to share it with you it's really adorable!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend whatever you found yourself up too. I am off to accomplish some things around home today and will be back soon!

_______________________________________________________

Good day, friends! It is such a pleasure to have the opportunity to share this space once again, especially as we've gotten to know Rebekah in person in the last couple of months. Friends are such a great blessing, especially those made through such a surprising venue as the internet.

So here we go!

Last fall, we picked up a couple packs of HEAT cork trivets at IKEA and have been hanging onto them to spruce up for the table. I had considered painting, but couldn't quite find the right paint that was good for cork but also heat proof. You don't want your trivet to stick to the bottom of your hot dish, after all. I have heard good thinks about wood burning cork, but I was itching for a little more color. Then, I spotted these coasters on Craft blog and it got my wheels turning. Last weekend we picked up a bag of springy cotton cord at the Goodwill, and the idea for these trivets was born!

I used the smaller of the HEAT cork trivets for these. On one side, mark out your geometric grid using pencil lines and a ruler. For this size, I started 3/4" from the edge, and spaced the grid 1.5 apart.

Since I knew that I would be going through each point several times, I punctured each grid point with a knitting stitch holder just enough to guide the needle. You could also use a bamboo skewer, toothpick, or sturdy needle.

Then its just a matter of threading your needle and experimenting with geometric patterns amongst the grid pattern. I did one in two shades of green in preparation for St. Patty's day, and another getting ready for Easter.

The best part is that you could pull out the string, and re-use for the next holiday, making an inexpensive and easy seasonal craft. Happy Crafting!

If you didn't want to use these on the table top, they would also make cute little message boards:

{Couple small notes: (1) you might notice a switched from a plastic yarn needle to a metal needle halfway through. This is because the cork broke my plastic needle, and I found that the metal needle actually worked better if you can find one with an eye large enough for your string. (2) I first tried drilling the holes, but it was a disaster. You don't need anything nearly that powerful to set your grid}

Thanks so much to Rebekah for having us again, we hope to be back someday soon!

*don't forget to check out the Ravenna Girls blog HERE and say hello. They have tons of fun craft inspiration and eye candy over there and they are truly the sweetest ladies ever! Thanks girls xoxo!

Sponsor Spotlight :: A Full Day

This month I have the honor and privilege of introducing you guys to one of the sweetest women I have met online. Joii Cooper is the author of A Full Day, a blog about living each day to the fullest. I have truly been so blessed by Joii. Her heart and passion for marriage, women and a deep love and commitment to God.

She is a woman of her word - whenever she emails me or leaves me a note in the comment section she truly encourages and makes me smile. And if she says she is praying I know she means it! I got a chance to interview Joii and learn a little bit more about her, I know you will all love her too! Without further ado here is Joii:

1. What is the name of your blog and the passion behind why you write it?

My blog name is A Full Day.  The blog is dedicated to my mama.  She's enjoying heaven now, but while she was here she had an email signature that read, "Live Each Day To The Fullest".  You can read about her here.  In addition to that, the Amplified version of the bible says in John 10:10 "...I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)."  My passion is for women to live full godly lives.  The Lord is all for it!  I'm passionate about people understanding that Jesus is the only way to live a full life.  He provides so much.  From salvation to a great pedicure, God's got it covered.  The heart behind my blog is to point people to Christ.  I love sharing the bible in a practical light.  God's Word is alive and affects every part of life, if we let it.

2. A favorite date night memory with your sweetie?

Aw man!  What a question!  There are so many.  One day Shuga Sweetness and I went to a local park and conducted our own photo shoot.  We armed ourselves with our camera and clicked away.  We took tons of pictures of each other.  We've got some awesome pictures from that day.  We were like two little kids.  It was so much fun.  And...IT WAS A FREE DATE.  Who doesn't like free?  :-)

3. A favorite indulgence?

I'd say it's a toss up between great food and shopping.  I love to cook.  I like pretty dishes.  Food presentation takes eating to another level :-) I just recently made pan-roasted brussel sprouts for the first time.  Let the choir sing, "Hallelujah".  Oh my...they were sooooo tasty.  Yum!  On the other hand, I love to shop for pretty things, clothes, shoes, etc.  I like being surrounded by beauty.  That can be done with flowers, candles, or a big warm sweater.  I'll take it all.

4. One way that helps you stay "Joii-full"?

In order for me to be "Joii-full", I must be "Bible-full".  Without God's Word, I'm pretty much a mess.  Consistency is the key. Sometimes it's quite a challenge, but I'm determined to take a daily dose of the word of God.  It works!  I've proven it!

5. What is one thing you are striving to do in the new year?

I'm striving to make the promises of God that are found in His word so big in my life, that nothing else is visible.  I will plant the seed of God's Word in my heart and watch it grow.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can visit Joii at her blog, A Full Day HERE I especially loved this video she did with her sweetie about keys to a great marriage! Thanks Joii it is always a joy!! :)

Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to Kayla Aimee. KA is the beautiful wife of Jeff and mother of a little miracle named Scarlette. Born fifteen weeks early Scarlette spent the first 5.5 months of her life in the NICU. KA is an incredible SAHM who has an infectious way of writing about her life on her blog and as you can imagine a passion for preemies and micro preemies.

Today Kayla Aimee is here to share a special + sweet way to dress up a preemie shirt while following some strict hospital restrictions...and shes sharing pictures of her sweetie pie too :)

I am super honored to have Kayla Aimee as my feature sponsor this month her blog and life is a blessing and testimony of Gods goodness and grace, you must check it out I know you will love it!

Now here's KA:

This little project is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to pretty up some basic baby clothes. My daughter, Scarlette, spent the first 5.5 months of her life in the NICU. While in there, we were really limited on clothing options for her. Not just because she was an itty bitty little thing but because the hospital had pretty strict standards about what we could put on her. The most important requirement was that her shirts snapped open in the front for easy access to all of the electrodes/wires attached to her chest.

So Scarlette spent a lot of time in simple, snap open tops like these. The thing is, they aren't the cutest shirts in the world. So I decided to dress them up a bit.

All you need for this project is a baby shirt, some assorted ribbon and some needle and thread.

Pick out two pieces of ribbon. Open the front flap of the shirt and stitch one piece of ribbon to the inside. I used lace for this part. Then layer the other piece of ribbon on the outside of of the front flap and stitch it down as well. I sort of bunched the ribbon as I went to give it a ruffled look.

I am not a huge fan of the snaps being visible so I decided to cover them up with rosettes. To make the flower ribbon rosette, cut a small fabric circle for your backing and cover with fabric glue. Pin one end of the ribbon to the center of the circle. Spiral the ribbon around the center, twisting it as you go. Twist the ribbon a bit more loosely on the last few spirals to create a fuller, flowery effect. Let dry and then secure with a few stitches to the bottom and sides of the rosette!

And that's it! It's a ten minute or less project.

Scarlette is ten months old now and happily at home so we can dress her in whatever we like. But I still make her a few of these cute shirts from time to time because she looks so darn sweet in them. Am I right or am I right? (Answer: I am totally right. My baby is stinkin' cute.)

Your local NICU is most likely always looking for preemie clothing and hat donations. A few of these shirts would probably brighten some parent's day so if you're thinking of making some, consider creating a couple preemie sized ones to drop off at your local hospital. Trust me, when your little one lives in what amounts to a cubicle with very few personal effects, seeing them dressed in cute clothes is not only fun, but provides a much needed sense of normalcy.

A twenty-something not-so-newlywed and southern girl through and through, Kayla Aimee (you can call her KA) likes scrapbooking, Macy's at Christmas time, and really good fitting jeans. By day she is a stay at home mom but by night she is a blogger, deal finder and kick arse ping pong player. You can read more about Scarlette's story on her blog at http://kaylaaimee.com

Surprise Party :: Dishtowel Apron with Heather from Life Made Lovely!

Hi there A Bit of Sunshine readers!  My name is Heather and I blog over at Life Made Lovely.  I'm so excited to be celebrating with you and Rebekah today! With the weather turning cooler, I find myself inspired to spend time in the kitchen baking treats for my family.  With that in mind, I have a fun and easy dish towel apron tutorial to share with you today.
I used a lovely dish towel I found on clearance, some vintage seam binding and a vintage sheet from my thrift store stash.  Laying the dish towel lengthwise, I created 4 small pleats across the top edge by folding the fabric over about a half inch and then pinning them in place. After stitching them down, I covered the top edge of the towel with seam binding.
Next I created a flower to add onto my apron.  From my vintage pillowcase I cut two sizes of circles and two figure eight shapes.  I created the "8's" by folding the fabric in half and cutting a circle with a flat bottom.  I layered the fabric with the largest circle on the bottom, next the figure eights overlapping each other, and finally the smallest circle on top.  I pinched the bundle from the back, added a few stitches to hold it all in place, and finished it off with a favorite vintage button.  Oh, and I stitched the bottom layer of my flower directly to my apron to ensure it stays secure.
The best part...whole project was finished before nap time was over! Thanks for having me Rebekah! I hope you're having a happy birthday sweet friend!! -xo  Heather

<------------------------------------------------------------>

Thanks Heather I am in LOVE with this project it's so adorable I have the perfect little dishtowel in my stash just waiting for me to make one too!! Make sure to check out Heather's blog it's one of my favorites...ps. Heather did my blog design too, she the best!!!

Surprise Party :: a special gift from my sweet sister in law Kristen!

This next post was a tear jerk-er for me to open and read. I haven't divulged all of the information around our move but part of the story includes not one but two special homes that Chris and I have made together with our families. Both are ending in the bittersweet and grueling short sale process. I will post more about it all in the future but to release these spots into the hands of the Lord has been very emotional for me. I am a sentimental soul who takes refuge and delight in building a place to call home and filling it with memories.

My Sister in law Kristen does these amazing house drawings and I am the proud owner of two of her originals - they are truly some of my most favorite pieces. This morning she surprised me with some new ones and I am in tears and in love with how she has captured our beloved homes!

 <--------------------------------------------------------------------->

Dear Rebekah,

I know most of your friends are sharing fun diys here today, but I have something a little different to share with you on your blog for your birthday today.  Surprise! :)
Ages ago you asked me if I would draw up two little home portraits for you.

As you celebrate your birthday this year I hope you are able to sit for this moment and soak in the truth that these homes you cultivated and shared were a rich blessing to many, myself included.  It was a joy for me to spend time this weekend thinking about you and these two sweet houses you made into vibrant homes, my colored pencils in hand, as I considered the wonderful memories made within their walls over the years.  May these little drawings be a small reminder to you of the good and beautiful gifts you have received and shared in Christ! And may they encourage your heart as you settle into your new house and dream up the decorations and celebrations and date nights and projects with your kids that will make your new space just as lovely--if not more so--as your first two.

I love you, Rebekah, and wish you a very happy birthday!  I am so excited to see what the coming year holds for you and your family as you continue to embrace the journey God has you on.  Thank you for inviting me to pop in here today to be a part of your blog birthday party! xoxo, Kristen

 <--------------------------------------------------------------------->

These are the two homes that she capture so brilliantly!

Kristen this gift is one of the most meaningful I have ever received. In the midst of your own family moving and lots of life change going in your world too you have taken time to bless my heart deeply and for that I don't know how to even thank you enough. Thank you for being here today to help me celebrate it is a huge gift! xo

Surprise Party :: Autumnal Wreath with Jodi

Hi, my name is Jodi and I blog at Life and Oh-La-Dee-Dah. I'm so thrilled to be over here at A Bit of Sunshine today! I love this blog of Rebekah's and am so honored to help celebrate her birthday with a guest post. So let's get to it.

Let me paint the picture for you...I'm walking through Target and it never fails, the end isles are generously heaped with tidbits of seasonal decor and they suck me in. This is truly a problem during these Fall and Winter months when the draw to cozy my home with such festive eye candy is hard to resist. I scramble for my blinders and masterfully clip them on and continue to the pacifier isle and then on to find the bananas. This week, instead of loading my cart full of decor, I decided to pull from my craft supplies and make a little something. We are after all, on a budget and you wouldn't believe the amount of pacifiers and bananas we go through.

I used a packing tube I'd saved from an Etsy purchase I received a while ago, a hot glue gun, scissors, felt and since I just purged my crafting supplies recently, I ended up buying fall colored yarn (which I'll use for another project later) and ribbon.

I tied the yarn to start and tucked it under as I wrapped it around the tube so the loose end wasn't visible.

When I finished wrapping the yarn, I tucked the end piece under the other strands in a tight knot and then I hot glued it down.

Then, I hot glued the yarn wrapped tubes to each other to form the wreath. I made a small felt bow to garnish the bottom of my wreath and used ribbon to hang it. Since this project is so flexible, you could definitely use a bigger tube (or even toilet paper rolls) and add whatever embellishments you wanted.

Just a simple, easy little bit of Fall decor. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to head to Target and just take one little peek at those end isle. Just a peek for inspiration. I promise.

<---------------------------------------------------------->

Hello, I am Theresa from Orange Juice Etc. and I am honored to be here for Rebekah’s Birthday!

I wanted to share a project I did recently for a leather and bow belt. The project requires few supplies, a sewing machine, and simple sewing skills. I must tell you that I do not consider myself to be an experienced seamstress by any means so if you have a more efficient way of doing any of these steps, please do so! Now lets get started.

What you need:
•       A strip of thin, pliable leather, suede or other that will be easy to sew through
•       Fabric of your choice
•       Thread
•       Good scissors

First cut your leather to the width and length you want your belt to be. I used a vintage tie belt that I hadn’t worn much and just cut the ends off to the length I wanted. The leather should not wrap all the way around your waist, you should leave 4 or 5 inches of room to attach and tie the bow. The great thing about leather is that it will not fray so the edges do not need to be finished.

Now you will make two fabric “ribbons” that you will attach to each end of your leather strip that will create the bow of the belt. Decide first how long you want your ribbons to be. I measured mine against a sash from another dress. Each side measures 26 inches.

Lay your fabric out so that you can cut the length of your ribbon. Measure the width of your leather and fold the edge of the fabric over to the width of the leather plus your seam allowance (I used 3/8ths) and cut to the correct length. Cut another in the same fashion. You will end up with two pieces of fabric the same length that are a little over 2 times the width of your leather.

Iron your two pieces of fabric in half length-wise so that the right side of the fabric is facing in.

I wanted a slanted edge on the ends of the ribbons, this is not necessary but I thought it would add a nice touch. Take one end of each piece of fabric and fold a corner up to touch the other edge of fabric like you are making a square out of a piece of paper. Press the fold of the fabric with your finger to make a crease along which to cut. And cut.

Start sewing on the folded side of the ribbon at the bottom end with the slant (keep in mind that the right side of your fabric is still facing in). Sew up the slant, turn, and continue to sew up the complete length of the fabric. Stop when you get to the small end leaving this open.

Turn the tubes right side out, gently pointing out the tip of the slant, I used a dull pencil. Now iron the fabric so you end up with a long, smooth ribbon.

Before you attach the ribbons to the leather, take raw ends and turn them inside about a quarter to half an inch and sew along the edge. I did this so there would not be raw edges exposed that will fray with use of the belt.

The last step! Its time to attach the ribbon to the leather. Pin the fabric about an inch in to the ends of the leather and sew as closely as you can to the edge of the leather securing the fabric. I went a step further and sewed two more lines of stitching, each the same distance apart, making three lines of stitching connecting the fabric to the leather.

And your belt is complete! String it through the loops of your jeans, or tie it around a dress, be creative and enjoy!

Oh my gosh I am so in love with this adorable belt tutorial Theresa it is SO perfect. Thanks so much for being here today to help me celebrate sweet friend it is such a treat!!
