Norway, Costa Magica

This was our ship. We left later than planned due to a strong wind. All night and the greater part of the next day we sailed. We had plenty of time to explore the Costa Magica and we were able to make the acquantance of the other members of our group. Stavanger was the first stop where we could disembark and walk around for a couple hours.

I remember the happy times we spent here with the children. We were invited by a Norwegian family whom we met in Rotterdam in the Norwegian church. This was long ago almost 48 years have past now. This family taught us to speak Norwegian.

Back on board we had to suffer "Sloepenrol" or "Lifeboat drill". It was rather funny actually, for my sister took her umbrella with her. I have the feeling that we all enjoyed ourselves immensely.

Oh, and yes my sister and I were the oldest members of the group, which was not always nice, for we were treated like invalids.

ABC Wednesday, L for Life in the cold Arctic Climate

Glaciers are getting smaller and smaller all over the world.

This is the Supphellebreen  in Norway on

                                           the northern hemisphere.

New Zealand , South Island,

Franz Jozef Glacier

 on the southern hemisphere.

On a glacier in New Zealand

Several years ago  I went to Leiden to the Museum for Cultural Anthropology, to see an exhibition about the Arctic regions. The residents of the Arctic live in Alaska, Siberia, Canada, Greenland, and Lapland. The people are called the Inuits ( Greenland), the Unangan ( Alaska), the Sámi (Lapland). They are now called First Nations, as Leslie remarked.

Clothes made of intestines are waterproof and wind-tight

They used to live from fishing and hunting. Everything of the animal was used either for food but also for clothing, and the oil of course among other things, for lamps.

The animals in these areas are the polar bear, the snow fox, sea lions, the seal, the walrus. Their skins, and intestines were also used for clothes. Their bones were important for the production of tools. Nowadays many of these people live like we do with clothes of the same material we have. I found the clothes made of intestines of animals, very strange, but interesting .
These clothes were waterproof , because the seams were sewn with a waterproof stitch. Prepared intestines of sea lions, seals, walrus, otters, or bears were sewn in horizontal strips to each other.

The kamleika has its strips in a vertical direction.
A kamleika is an Aleut robe made from sea mammal (mostly sea otter) intestine, which was light and waterproof. They also sometimes had robes to protect against threats such as heavy wind and rain. They were sewn with grass, and each took around a month to make.
It was worn by men as an outer layer of clothing while kayaking. In the village also a jacket made of intestine protected the fur or bird skin clothing underneath against snow and rain. Intestine kamleikas fell out of use in the early twentieth century.

Even windows were made of intestines.

The Arctic is warming up quickly, faster than other places on Earth. People who live there have been noticing the change. Because their culture is adapted to the Arctic’s cold climate, global warming is making it difficult for them to continue their traditions.

Therefore it is time to try and stop the rapidly change of climate.

Our World Tuesday ,ABC Wednesday, G for The Girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes

Twenty years ago this twelve years old girl addressed the U.N. meeting on environmental problems.
Wikipedia says:
"Severn Cullis-Suzuki (born November 30, 1979 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a Canadian environmental activist, speaker, television host and author. She has spoken around the world about environmental issues, urging listeners to define their values, act with the future in mind, and take individual responsibility. She is also the daughter of Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki.

that's My World, ABC Wednesday, E for Electricity

Seventy years ago there were no electrical utensils like we have now.

If you want to see more details please click on the photos.

Every day I realise that we depend on electricity in almost everything we do. We even cannot use the central heating without it! There will be no washing machine without electricity, no fridge, no TV nor radio, no digital camera,no computer, no mobile phone,no telephone at all, no electric cooker,no cash desks or checkouts in shops, no self-closing doors in buildings or on ships,no elevators, no moving staircases, no trains,no planes...no modern kitchen utensils. But how did we do this all a hundred years or even 60 years ago?

We will be lost if we had to miss all the blessings of electricity, but... the environment will be better off.

That's my World is hosted by Klaus, Sandy, Wren, Fishing Guy and Sylvia - a Team of experienced bloggers, whom we thank for this wonderful meme. You can see more of the world of other bloggers by clicking on the logo in the side bar or on that's My World

Sky Watch, Ecolution

Free as a bird. Lonely as the sea.

Ecolution is a sailing yacht, which will sail year round and world wide, summer and winter, throughout the world, operated by her two owners. A professional crew is not needed. Living on Ecolution for extended periods is intended so she will be built to feel warm and comfortable, like a home.

Supphellebreen, a branch of Jostedalsbreen in Norway ( breen = the glacier)

Glaciers in Norway are getting smaller and smaller. It has been proven that of the thirty glaciers, that had been examined, twenty four had considerably been diminished due to global warning. This is also the case in New Zealand.

I copied this from Pam.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from.

Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations. VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour. Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.
