a place where the frost had not let go… - v2

no larger than a footprint
in the sundrenched yard
green from the warming this morning
the ceding of the cold, giving,
returning the yard to light,
a place where the frost had not let go…
 
seemingly incongruent, inexplicable,
all around the green had returned,
the yard had come to life,
well above freezing, if just barely,
but these few inches
held me entranced…
 
the frost held on a little longer,
a little tighter yet, a treasure,
in the grip of winter, in white,
treasuring this small space
this island in the green yard,
bathed in December sunlight…
 
was it you, mom, your spirit, stopping,
standing, watching over us last night as we slept,
your feet leaving an impression in the grass,
admiring our decorations, our Christmas lights,
I could picture you standing there, in your sweater,
chilled from the cold, in your narrow white sneakers…

a place where the frost had not let go… - v3

my eyes stopped me, on my walk to the car,
to something eternal, urgent, stopping,
looking a bit closer to something out of place,
a small shape I recognized, familiar, familial,
a place of love it seemed, for me to notice,
to pause, to capture, to preserve…
 
no larger than a women’s size 5 footprint
in the sundrenched yard, around 10:30am,
green from the warming this morning
the ceding of the cold, giving, releasing,
returning the yard to light, to autumn,
a place where the frost had not let go…
 
seemingly incongruent, inexplicable,
all around the green had returned,
the yard had come to life, wet after rain,
well above freezing, if just barely, 44 degrees.
but these few inches, this shape,
this spot held me entranced…
 
the frost held on a little longer, for me,
a little tighter yet, a treasure, to discover,
in the grip of winter, in white, still frozen,
treasuring this small space, set apart,
this island in the green yard,
bathed in December sunlight…
 
it you, mom, wasn’t it (?), your spirit, stopping,
standing, watching over us last night as we slept,
your feet leaving an impression in the grass,
admiring our decorations, our Christmas lights,
I could picture you standing there, in your sweater,
chilled from the cold, in your narrow white sneakers…
 
how I wish you could have lingered, that you could
have come inside to hug me as I slept,
our did you, could you, you know how deep I sleep;
but thank you for this morning, that spot I savored,
feeling so close to you now writing these lines,
so glad I was drawn to your footstep…

Running with Grandpa – v2

Maybe two and a half,
certainly, no more than that,
running in the yard with grandpa,
going from flower to flower…
 
The mountain laurel,
giant rhododendron,
ground cover more at her height,
all of them sending her reeling,
in giggles of delight…
 
Drinking in the scents,
picking them in her imagination,
running from plant to plant,
too much for grandpa on the hot day,
happy to let her run by herself…

Painting with a brush filled with dew – v2

a breath of morning, dew droplets,
appearing before us at our waking,
a dance of beads of water, jewels,
rimming, edging, covering leaves,
kissing countless flower petals…
 
each droplet of dew placed precisely,
not coincidence, graced by the Creator,
pearls breathed, a prayer of abundance,
painting with a brush filled with dew,
a feast for our eyes to share…
 
liquid glass, pearls, like melted sugar,
dabbed, dew brushed on each petal,
wet, unlike Jack Frost’s confection,
cold, in another time, a season,
when blossoms do not exist…
 
living flesh sprayed by droplets,
a repeating pattern, precision,
frozen for us in our memory,
an infinite number of tears,
stars, brushed on each petal…

a breath of the morning, dew,
appearing before us at our waking,
a dance of water droplets, jewels,

each droplet of dew placed precisely,
each pearl breathed, a prayer,
not random, placed by the Creator,
a feast for our eyes to share…
 
droplets of dew, liquid glass,
like melted sugar, dabbed,
an infinite number of dots,
stars, brushed on each petal…
 
living flesh sprayed by droplets,
a repeating pattern, precision,
frozen for us in our memory,
present, captured forever…

each drop breathed, a prayer – v2

a painted word-picture,
each drop breathed, a prayer,
speaking to each one of us
through our eyes, our memory,
words of love, of beauty, grace,
an image grafted, melting into our story…
 
dust, droplets of rain, transparent beads,
liquid glass, dew, like melted sugar,
dabbed, brushed on each petal,
like Jack Frost’s confection,
another time, a season,
when blossoms do not exist…
 
living flesh sprayed by the droplets,
a repeating pattern, precision,
frozen for us in the image, the moment -
Drink it all in, heavy with memory,
present, captured forever,
after a brief morning rain shower…

pearls, jewels, of water on each blossom

pearls, jewels, of water on each blossom

vibrant, almost pulsing with color

bejeweled, bedazzled, utterly brilliant

life giving water on each petals, the leaves,

the stems of the daylily, the wet rich soil

supporting them in the garden

living supple flesh sprayed by the droplets

the sudden mid-day rain shower,

drink it all in, heavy with memory,

present, captured, on the emulsion

after a brief burst, the deluge
