Hassenplug Covered Bridge

Image
The Hassenplug Covered Bridge is a 70 foot long covered bridge located over the Buffalo Creek in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. The bridge was named for the Hassenplug family, who had a home nearby to the bridge. Built in 1825, it is believed to be one of the oldest remaining historic covered bridges in the United States, with only the Hyde Hall Covered Bridge in Upstate New York possibly being older as it was built the same year. The covered bridge was built with a Burr arch truss design. The covered bridge was restored or modernized in 1959. During the restoration process, the wooden deck was replaced with steel grating and a pier was added to allow for heavier vehicles to cross. The bridge is still open to traffic today on North Fourth Street in Mifflinburg, allowing for a weight limit of 6 tons. There is a small parking area at the south end of the bridge, which is also shared by the one mile long Koons Trail . How to Get There: Sources and Links: Bridgehunter.com -  Hassenplug Co...

There was a restoration of the bridge that took place in 1958. Another restoration took place in 2010. As the bridge was posted to the National Register of Historic Places on February 8, 1980, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission required the work to maintain the histor...

Shikellamy State Park Overlook

Located at the confluence of the western and northern branches of the mighty Susquehanna River, Shikellamy State Park's overlook makes up part of Shikellamy State Park, which opened in 1960. While the marina section of the state park is at the southern tip of Packers Island in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, the  Shikellamy Overlook is on the western shore of the Susquehanna River in nearby Union County. One of many fine vistas dotted throughout the Keystone State, the overlook features a 360 foot cliff that overlooks the confluence of the branches of the Susquehanna River. The Shikellamy State Park was named in honor of Chief Shikellamy of the Oneida Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. A friend of both the colonists and American Indian tribes, Chief Shikellamy played a prominent role in the development of the Pennsylvania frontier in the early and middle 18th century. While the access road up to the overlook is closed from October to April, there is an one mile long n...
