Inspire Me Monday: Make it like Batik!

Hi all and welcome to another Inspire Me Monday with yours truly.... Julie! I have a fun and quick little tutorial today that was sparked by a freebie I got! Not too long ago, I replaced my inkjet printer. Well, in the box was a stack of 4 by 6" photo paper. I set it aside not really knowing what I would do with it and then, I remembered a fun technique I learned FOREVER ago. I'll use that paper to give it a try again! I call it the Batik Background technique but I just made that name up. I know there has to be an official name for it.

What got me thinking about this technique is this fabric....

I had it pulled out because I was on a mask-making frenzy, sewing to outfit my family and my friends. I was basically throwing masks and whoever might want/need one! ;-) I love, love, love Batik fabric. Okay, now that' you've seen my inspiration, let's get to what I created using that freebie photo paper!

Aren't these colors so vibrant and fun? I love how the photo paper really soaks in the ink and never seems to dull!

So, I started by stamping my image onto the photo paper using Versamark ink. You can use any clear pigment ink. Way back when, they taught you to use clear embossing ink. For my samples, I did hit my paper with an embossing fun to make sure the ink was set and dry.

For this first card, I used the Power Poppy clear stamp set called Poppies!

Now comes the fun part. Since batik isn't a blended fabric that moves easily from one color to the next, I had to remind myself of this and just go for a more rough, less blended look. So, this is what I did....

I literally did an old school direct to paper technique and rubbed my ink pad over my paper. As you can see below, the results look rough, but that's the beauty of it!

When you are done adding color, just wipe off the paper with a dry and clean paper towel to remove any excess ink that might just be sitting on the surface. As you can see, the Versamark ink resisted the ink perfectly and beautifully! Look at that rich color!

And here's a peek at the ink pads I used for this version...

And here's a peek at the finished card! The sentiment was heat embossed and I used the stamp set Loving Tulips.

And, since I was having so much fun, I decided to make two more cards! This next one, I used these colors, and the stamp set Folk Heart.

And here's a peek at the final card! Bling had to be added... of course! ;-)

And, here's a look at the third one! For this card, I used the same colors of ink as my first card, I just didn't use that much of the barn red ink. The stamp set here was In Praise of Sunflowers.

And... here's the finished card! For the sentiment, I used the "hello" from the Loving Tulips set and then accented by cutting it out using the coordinating die.  And, loved adding a little bling to the exclamation point!

So friends, if you have some Versamark, photo paper and fun inks, you can do this! I hope you give it a try because it creates very, very vivid creations in a jiffy! I had fun making these and I didn't even get my fingers TOO inky! ;-)

Thanks for stopping by!

Creative Confetti: Mini Me!

Hello all and happy Tuesday! How is everyone doing this week? Here in my neck of the woods it has been a scorcher temperature-wise, so I was happy to get some time to create and stay cool and creative! Recently, I scrolled through some of my recent cards and thought about design and what I liked about certain creations and what I didn't love about others. That got me thinking about being inspired. And.... that's what helped craft the idea behind this week's Creative Confetti Challenge. Are you ready?

HOW TO PLAY: Be inspired by one of your past creations and use it to inspire a "mini" version of the original! Notice how I said, be "inspired?" If you want to get technical and create a mini layout, go for it! But, if you want to take some of the elements of the larger creation and share just a few of those on a mini card, let's see what you've got! I chose to be inspired!

Let's take a look at my creative process!

First of all, I want to share the inspiration for my mini. A few months back, I hosted the Inspire Me Monday tutorial and mashed up a few techniques to come up with what I call Embossed Silhouette. Ever since that tutorial, I've been looking for new ways to incorporate this look because it is so easy and ushers in dramatic results. So, here's a peek at some of the cards that inspired today's creation. And... HERE's a link to the original tutorial as well.

And, here's a peek at my "mini!" Instead of using the Power Poppy set Vibrant Thanks, which is currently sold out, I decided to pick one that you could actually get your hands on now! ;-) I chose the stamp set Poppies.

Instead of making a rectangle card, I decided to use some stitched circle dies to create not only my card base but the layers as well. I folded a 4" by 4" piece of black card stock and then set my die on top, leaving just a sliver of the card at the fold to keep the card's integrity and still have a circle shape. Then, I used one size smaller die for my white layer. And, I cut one smaller from that to serve as my mask so that I could sponge on that bold color.

First up, if you looked at the tutorial link, you know I stamped the poppies stamp in black ink and then colored it all up using a black marker to create a silhouette.

As you can see, I used My MISTI stamping tool to keep my circle in place because after I colored it (I didn't remove it from my MISTI), I inked up my stamp with Versamark ink and then heat embossed using white detail powder to get that detailed silhouette image. Afterward, I lined up my mask and using low tack tape, taped both the mask and the main image down real good so that it wouldn't move as I sponged on the ink. For my ink, I used Morocco and Lady Bug inks by Memento.

And then, the fun continued! Not only did I add a little pizazz to the envelope...

I added a little something extra to the inside of my mini card!

If you missed it, I also made an envelope liner using that pop of orange on the inside...

I added the "Dear Friend" sentiment from the stamp set Heart Abloom and a few iridescent sequins and.. ta da! Finished! I think it turned out so cute and you can still see the inspiration from the original creation.

And that, my friends, is it! Want to join me this week? Simply create, post and then link up using the linky below! As we always say, if you get those fingers inky and play along, each and every link is an opportunity to win a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop! Woo Hoo!

Until next time!

Creative Confetti: Share your Fave!

Hello all and Happy Tuesday! This past week was such a blur that I thought it would be a good one to share some of our favorite cards or colored images and hopefully spark some creativity out in the world wide web! How? Well, since the weather is getting nicer and many of you might not be creating as much, why not look through all your Power Poppy creations, pick your absolute favorite, write a blog or social post about it and share a link! If we see your best creations, we might be inspired! So, my friends, that's what this week's challenge is all about!

HOW TO PLAY: Just as I mentioned above, simply show off one of your favorite Power Poppy creations, share why it's your favorite - image, color, layout? - and then share the link using our linky below! That's all it takes this week to add an entry to our monthly drawing for $25 off in the Power Poppy Shop!

On to my creation!

I absolutely love this stamp set -- Poppies -- the whistful way those flowers just sway make my heart happy. They look so beautiful and carefree! I remember making this card and coloring the image up one night while I was sitting on the couch watching TV. I remember getting lost in the process and honestly, I kept coloring and coloring and coloring until I knew I had to stop adding depth or shadows. I love the richness of color and I like how the layout, while not intense, just seems to compliment the image. The paper colors really seem to match my colored up image as well. So, my friends, that's why this little number was my favorite! It was a time when I felt it all just "worked!"

If you'd like to read a little bit more about the Copic markers I used, just click HERE to read all about it!

Here's a little closeup for you!

And, I do have a confession! I actually have two favorite cards using this image! If you click HERE you'll see the runner up, using almost the same layout! The set I used was a clear set (pssst! It's on sale too!) but Power Poppy has a digital version - called Perfect Poppies - that uses bits and pieces of the clear set in a way you can arrange and create your own orientation, which is super cool!

Okay, now it's your turn! Let's see you show off your favorite Power Poppy creation! Please don't combine this challenge with another challenge. To be in the running, you just need to cue up an older creation, share a little bit about it and then link it up below!  It's just that simple! And, when you do, link up your creation using the linky below! Every single entry will be one more chance at winning a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop!

Until next time, happy stamping!

Creative Confetti: Let's throw up a sketch!

Hi folks! How's your week shaping up so far? Grand, I hope! I thought since it had been a while since we did a sketch, maybe it was time to cue up one to inspire some crafty endeavors this week!

Instead of recreating the wheel, I decided to pull up a card from my personal blog and use THAT as inspiration! To pick just one, I decided to go with the card I created closest to this date last year. And, that's where the inspiration sprouted for this week's sketch! So, after scrolling back, here's the sketch!

And here's the card that inspired it!

As you can see, I used Power Poppy's stamp set Poppies and colored it all up with Copic Markers. I love, love, love the red and purple color combo and that splash of yellow helps give that bit of visual punch! It will be fun to see what color combo you rock! Just a little note, I used the clear stamp set but there is a similar set you can download in a digital stamp set called Perfect Poppies. It is JUST as beautiful! Be sure to check it out! ;-)

And here's a close up for you, so you can see those vibrant poppies!

Now, for those of you who love a little extra bit of a challenge, check out Power Poppy's Sketch board over on Pinterest HERE. If you want "extra credit" and want to try a different sketch to upload for this challenge, head on over to that board and choose one! Just that simple! I noticed we need to get more in the habit of ushering in sketch challenges because that board has just shy of a dozen. It would be nice to build on this and have dozens to pick from! ;-) So, keep playing along and we'll add to that board every now and then.

Until then, let's see your take on one of these layouts! Feel free to flip it any which way you like as well. Just make sure you reference the original sketch so we can see how you interpreted it! Once you're done creating, don't forget to link up your card using the linky below so that we can see your handiwork and, at that point, you'll also be in the running for a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop too! So, as I love to say, get inspired then get those fingers inky!

Until next time!

The Last Bit of Vibes for 2018!

Hi-dee Ho Sweet Power Poppy Fans! It's Friday and I have to tell you, it's been a few weeks since we've thrown a handful of good vibes your way. So, I think I know the answer to the question, "Are you ready?" I know I am! Did you have a beautiful holiday and are you looking forward to ringing in the New Year? At Power Poppy, we sure are! And so, let's throw this last little bit of eye candy your way for 2018 to inspire you all as we step into a brand new calendar full of creativity!

1. Candy Crush! This creation by Lori Johnson took my breath away. I mean, come on! Look at the depth she created in this little duo of candy canes? And that plaid on the bow? I mean, really! Lori, you killed it girl! If you want to give this illustration a try with your own special twist of artistry, all you need to do is click HERE to pick up and download your own Candy Cane Classic! Christmas might be over but Candy Canes are always en vogue! ;-)

2. For the Love of Foil! Kelly Rix just discovered a wonder with digi stamps and we thought her results were so awesome, we had to share! Check out THIS creation! She used the Chickadee in Barberry digital stamp and discovered that if you print using a laser printer -- you can foil it! Just in case you want to get in the know on this fabulous technique, click HERE for a whole slew of tutorials on the Power Poppy blog about adding a splash of foil a.k.a. razzle dazzle to your cards and creations!

3. An Attitude of Gratitude This time of year it seems we need an abundance of "thank you" notes to have on hand. While Kathy Jones created this thank you for the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day -- a day to reflect on the sacrifice of so many called to fight for their countries -- I thought her design was so classic and beautiful. I love the stenciled backdrop and who doesn't just find their jaws dropping with Kathy's Copic coloring? I thought it was a great bit of inspiration for the sea of thank you notes that, if you're anything like me, probably need to start making soon!

4. Fur Real! A few weeks ago, we shared some well wishes for the talented Ms. Amy Shulke, who is recovering from an arm injury. It was so bad, it sidelined her online classes for a bit! We hope she's feeling better! Thankfully, her next class is on the calendar for January 18th.You can check it out HERE using Power Poppy's digital stamp Christmas Corgi and learn some mad skills on how to color up animal fur. If you can't make the class, Amy has some AMAZING tips on how to color animals realistically in her blog post HERE. She also kindly tells us all what to look for in an animal stamp, before we buy, to get the best possible coloring results!

5. Thanks for the 2018 Memories! I know I speak for Marcella when I say "Thank You!" to all of our fabulous Power Poppy Customers. You wow us on a regular basis with the things you do with Marcella's images. I know for a fact, she is 100% giddy whenever she sees your creative takes on things! We want to thank you, our wonderful customers for making this year --- and every year for that matter -- so fulfilling for all of us! Cheers to you in 2019! We can't wait to see the creative boundaries you'll break through this coming year! Can't wait!

This is normally part of the post where I share some of the wonderful links to our beloved Bloomies so that they can show off their works of art that they whipped up during the week. I am so glad to be able to say that they are taking some time off to be with loved ones and make some memories! They will all be back soon! Promise! Just so you know -- Inspire Me Monday is taking a creative hiatus until the first full week of January and our Creative Confetti Challenge will be back January 8th! So hold tight and know we....

WISH YOU A WONDERFULLY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Until we meet again in 2019! Blessings to you and yours!

Inspire Me Monday: Go Green!

Howdy fellow Power Poppy fans! Welcome to Inspire Me Monday with your hostess, Allison Cope.

This month I was inspired to create with Copic’s newest challenge, their #CopicColor challenge!  This challenge involves using only the 3 Copic colors that they assign each month.  This month’s three colors include…
YG17, YG23, G17

Since St. Patrick’s Day is coming this Saturday and being that I have a little Irish in me, I thought I would color up some shamrocks.  Well actually, it’s a plant called Oxalis Triangularis; more commonly known as False Shamrock, Purple Shamrock or the Love Plant.  It is generally found is a deep hue of rich purple, like the one shown below.

Today I’m going to color it strictly with greens.  So grab a cup of your favorite warm beverage and meet me at my desk…

Here’s a quick look at the card I made today featuring the lovely digital stamp image “Wish You Luck” bouquet.  I used the sentiment from the “Poppies” clear stamp set.

You too can have this digital beauty all for yourself...

I hope you too are inspired to create using some green this week!

~ Cheers! ~

Rich Hues for YOU to Use!

Hello all and welcome to a new week of color cues designed to get those creative juices rolling! This one looks a little more like it took a nod from fall but the jewel tones are so rich, I thought, why not reach for these colors, even if it is the dead of winter???

So, check out this week's.....

Just in case you wondered, this little beauty above is Hypericum androsaemum 'Alderbury Purple' and is a must-have for Marcella's garden someday! I love the rich red, the golden yellow and delish reddish purple -- all colors perfect for the world of card making!

HOW TO PLAY ALONG WITH US: To play along with us is simple -- use these three colors as inspiration for your card or creation and then, when you're done, link up your creation using our linky below! Easy peasy!

On to my creation!

When I check out the hues, I often stare at the palette and say - "What stamp set would rock this color combo?" Sometimes, the choices are easy. Other times, not so much. For some reason, I kept coming back to Poppies. I am not sure if I have been craving a colorfest with this stamp set or if I really, deep down felt that stamp set was the perfect pick. Regardless, I inked it up and let it fly!

After stamping in Memento Tuxedo Black ink, I grabbed my Copic Markers and these were the ones I picked! The reds were used on the poppies, the yellow plus YG03 and YG06 were used for the centers, the BV0000 and V01 were used to shade my flower and the greens took care of the leaves and stems!

After coloring up my image, the rest is just matting it up! I actually picked some Stampin' Up and My Mind's Eye scraps from my decorative paper stash and felt lucky that I had just the right purples, reds and yellows! I should also mention that the sentiment is also from the Poppies set.

Here's a little close up for y'all! You can see that I did go ahead and add some white gel pen accents to the center of my poppies.

And that, my friends, is it! We're so glad you decided to stop in this week! We hope this color combo will inspire you to play along with us for this week's Hues to Use. And remember.... if you would like to be a guest hostess and share the weekly Hues, all you need to do is play along with us. We grab all of our guests right from the weekly link lists! So get those fingers inky and let’s see how you put these Hues to good use!

Until next week!
~Julie

POPPING with Color!

Hello Peeps! And.... welcome to one of the most colorful places on the blog-o-sphere! It's Tuesday, which means we tip our hat to a whole new host of colors to satisfy your creative palette. This one is rich in earthy colors crafted by the hands of Mother Nature. Shall we get to it then?

I have to admit, I had fun naming this trio! How about a little Sun-kissed Coral? A dash of Silver Sage? And, for an accent pop, a bit of Dandelion Dream? This little beauty above with the oh-so-pretty "face" is another one of the massive hits from Marcella's trip to the "Idea Garden" in Illinois. If you missed reading up on this fabulous place, jump back to THIS Hues to Use to see a little bit of the back story. As for this little precious-petalled plant, it's called a Grecian Rose and in the words of Marce, "What a great looking plant!" I couldn't agree more and that's why I thought it would make the perfect centerpiece for this week's Hues to Use!

On to my creation!

First up, I have to apologize for the photo above. If you look at the color combos picked and my card you might say... What? Trust me -- the card isn't pink, blue and yellow, it is coral, sage and dandelion! For some reason, every time I tried to take a pic, it was the wrong natural light. Color correct can only go so far before your creation looks a bit "alien!"

Moving on! I wanted to use this sweet set -- Poppies -- for my creation because I just thought it worked so well with the color combo. But, I knew I didn't have the time to full out color this image this week. My life took a trip to Crazy Town and my stamping is moving more to the simple side these days.

So, I picked some fun decorative papers and decided to stamp and add a little color right to the paper! I stamped the poppy image in Rosebud Memento Ink and then accented with just a few Copic Markers -- YG91, G20, Y13, Y35, R32 and R20. When I was just adding a blush of color, I accented the center of my flowers with a wee bit of white gel pen. See?

From there, I picked a coordinating strip of decorative paper to bring out more of that golden shade, added a little texture thanks to a super fun Stampin' Up embossing folder and then, because of a stamping gaffe, I added the pennant style sentiment strip. Gaffe, you say? Yes.... tried to stamp the sentiment on the actual decorative paper piece and, well, let's say the desired result was less than ideal. Apparently, I "under impressed" and missed half the "hello." I really didn't want someone to get a card that said, "Popping in to say hell...." Yes, not ideal.

So peeps, there you have it -- a sunny, fun, and cheery creation that I will now POP in the mail! I am more than overdue on some snail mail correspondence!

What will you create with Sun-kissed Coral, Silver Sage and Dandelion Dream? I. Cannot. Wait. To. See!!!!

Remember, if you play along, you could be one of our guest stars of this column in upcoming weeks!

To get on our radar, simply play along! We want to see you ROCK these color combos and inspire the pants off us! (No, not literally, that would not be pretty.) All you have to do is use the color combos, and then link up your creation below! If chosen, we'll share the color combo for your hosting week, gift you with a digital stamp set of your choice and then, you go to town creating! What fun! You get to inspire fellow creative peeps and get some fun little bennies too!

So, what are you waiting for? Let's see you use this tantalizing trio to make something fabulous!

See you back here real soon!
~Julie

Inspire Me Monday: Coloring Multiple Images

Hi everyone! Elizabeth Zaffarano here! Happy Memorial Day and welcome to another Inspire Me Monday!

pile of stamped, fussy cut, and copic colored poppy images. Stamps from Power poppy.

While I’ll get into the inspiration and how-to’s for my card today,  I'm also going to share the strategies I’ve been using to tackle big coloring projects - like this big pile of poppies! So if you’ve ever needed to color a set of images over and over again—perhaps to make a set of note cards, place cards, bookmarks, or tags, but thought it’d be too difficult to keep track of colors, or would just take too long: this info is for you!

full front view of Memorial Day poppies wreath card with envelope.

Back to today’s card: When I found out that I’d be posting on Memorial Day, I immediately thought of the poppy wreaths that are used to commemorate Remembrance Day in the UK and the Commonwealth. They are floral, striking, and an appropriate image for this holiday. Quick history lesson -- The poppy became an emblem of observance after Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, MD penned the poem “In Flanders Fields” back in 1915 (during World War I).

So, I had my inspiration. And I had the gorgeous Poppies stamp set in mind. But to make a poppy-covered wreath, I would need to color a whole bunch of blooms!

diagonal shot of poppies card for Memorial Day. Shows shadows of background embossing and layered flowers.

First, I devised a color scheme for my flowers.  I wanted to recreate the iconic red Flanders poppies, so I found some images (right here on this blog! ), and saw that "red" poppies are actually shades of persimmon, with scarlet shadows and highlights of flame.  I pulled enough markers from my collection to cover natural variations among the petals, and then I created a labeled sampler for reference.  I usually stick it right to my coloring sheet, so it never gets lost.

copic coloring set up on clipboard with palette and color chart

I cut up some white card stock and used my MISTI to stamp at least ten of the larger poppy images from the set. I like to use a clipboard whenever I color because I find that I can hold and turn it to get the best angles for my strokes. As I chose three flowers per stamped image to color (so at least 30 flowers!), it was simpler to color first, then fussy cut. I could fit four stamped poppy clusters on the clipboard at a time.

To keep the cut cardstock pieces in place while I’m coloring, I have been using Tombow’s removable adhesive (in the green dispenser). It holds well enough and rubs off easily and completely when finished.  I have used this for stamped/die-cut images too, as I prefer to color after die-cutting.

how I temporarily adhere poppy stamped images to a base for coloring with Tombow removable adhesive

With four sets of flowers on my board, I was able to refer to earlier coloring choices as I completed sets of flowers.  So I could choose to go darker, or lighter, or redder or more orange as I worked.  In other words,  a nice amount of “poppy” variation, but staying within the range of my palette.

A side benefit of this set-up -- I was able to try out different coloring approaches, and compare them side-by-side.  For example, I colored a few flowers with an “under color” of YR000, then started in with my shadow colors (R59, R39).  For other flowers, I started with my mid-tone red (R24), then went to shadows and then highlights.  Other flowers got some final swipes of Y15 to pull out a brighter edge. Also, notice that my color palette now has more shades listed than when I started! I also ended up not using a couple of the colors I had originally chosen.

The centers of the flowers were filled with dark grey (BV29) and a few dots of black (110), and a bit of maroon (R89) and deep purple (V09) at the very center. I stippled colorless blender over top to add texture and keep the centers from looking like a shadowy mass. Then I topped it all off with a white colored pencil, to bring out the fine details.

As I finished coloring a flower cluster, I’d peel the card stock off of the clipboard, and then rub off the removable adhesive. Once I had made a stack of these colored panels, I grabbed some scissors and started fussy cutting.  As I cut a batch of flowers, I used a Memento marker to finish off the edges.

edging a fussy cut image with a marker makes your cutting look flawless

I also took some scratch paper and started tracing some of my circle dies to get an idea of how big I wanted my poppy wreath to be. I arranged my first cut batch of flowers on the sketches so I could plan the layout for the rest of the wreath.

Memorial Day wreath base sketches with card stock wreath base and poppies

Then I cut a proper wreath base from some dark orange cardstock and adhered everything down. I used a few foam squares to add depth. Believe it or not, I only needed to cut apart two of the smaller blooms to fill in a few gaps. When I was satisfied, and everything was secure, I set the wreath aside and got to work on the remaining components of the card.

Side shot of card, showing flower depth. Poppies for Memorial Day.

Since this was a commemorative wreath, I wanted it to have a banner and a structured and formal background. I made the banner first, by typing, printing, and foiling the first line of “In Flanders Fields,” and then using a banner die to cut it out.  The die also scored the paper, which gave a nice 3D effect.  I applied gold edging on my banner with a Krylon Gold Leafing pen. I tucked the banner among the poppies, across the middle of the wreath.

3D detail of banner, which says "In Flanders Fields the poppies blow"

For the background, I wanted sharp edges and angles that would contrast with the organic shapes present in the wreath, something reminiscent of a medal display. I started with a 6" piece of white cardstock. Since the poppies are a such a vibrant red,  I was looking for less saturated colors to use as the background. Turns out Distress Oxide ink in Faded Jeans, blended with a foam tool and very lightly spritzed with water, made the perfect matte blue to go behind my poppy wreath. I added some subtle texture by embossing the inked paper with a folder from WRMK. The repeated triangles in the design reminded me of folded flags. I trimmed the embossed square to 5 1/2”.

I used the Krylon pen again to add a gold edge. I attached the wreath to this background with glue dots and then used a tape runner to adhere the whole thing to an 110# card base.

There was just one poppy bloom leftover, so I used it to make an envelope seal from a scrap of my background.

Whew! I hope you enjoyed reading today, and are feeling more ready than ever to tackle a big coloring project, or maybe you are inspired to make a patriotic card of your own, or even play around with a flower wreath. Please, feel free to ask questions in the comments!

Have a wonderful week!
Elizabeth
