Thinking The Three Nation Option?

Who would have thought that a rotator cuff (the four muscles that hold your shoulder together, could put someone out of commission for months??? I don't know...but whatever you do...make sure your job has health insurance...otherwise you will be given a bottle of modest pain medication (if you are lucky) and that's about all that will be done for you.

Anyway, I've been reading, even if I havent' been writing. If I have anyone left reading this, then I wanted to post this article from the Jerusalem Post. I wonder if it's time to state the obvious, and put bases in Kurdish areas, maybe in Basrah, and let the Sunni Arabs have their damn war! They seem so determined to throw a fit, and there seems to be nothing that can stop them, except other Sunni Arabs. So, put them in charge and see how long it takes them to get all this out of their system.

I don't know...maybe it's misguided...but I am despairing that the Sunni Clerics are never going to accept that they don't get to be the dictators of Iraq anymore. Can't we just give them over to Jordan? Somehow I think King Hussein would be more able to deal with this....of course he would be more brutal too...but no one would criticize an Arab King for being too brutal...or at least..THAT never seems to happen!!! But if the US does it...it's genocide, crimes against humanity, immoral, illegal, ect...ect...ect.

Time for Kurdistan to be Kurdistan!

Everything that held Iraq together has disintegrated or is morally unsupportable. In this op-ed from the Jerusalem Post, the author argues that the sooner teh Bush Administration accepts the fact that Iraq is no more, the more quickly a long-term solution for the people in the area will be found.

Despite all the recent frantic attempts at constitution-making, Iraq is not a state anymore. It is difficult for the U.S. government, as well as for the international community, to realize this, but the earlier it sinks in the better the chances for a realistic approach which could give the people in Iraq a chance for a more peaceful future.

Even since Iraq was cobbled together by British imperial dreamers in the 1920s from three very disparate provinces of the old Ottoman Empire the only way to hold it together was by brute force. The British vested power in the Baghdad-based Sunni Arab minority. The Kurdish minority in the north, as well as the Shiite majority in the south, were virtually excluded from power. Consequently, all Iraqi governments were faced with recurring mutinies: by the Kurds, by the Shiites, even by the small Christian Assyrian community.

Saddam Hussein's regime was the most brutal of all of Iraq’s Sunni Arab minority regimes, and this is why Iraq has always long been the most repressive Arab regime.

The end of Saddam Hussein also toppled Sunni Arab minority rule; the current mayhem in Iraq is mainly the work of Sunni Arabs trying to abort any alternative government. The sophistication, logistic precision and overall planning of the terrorist attacks, as well as the apparent availability of hundreds of suicide bombers, cars and explosives all point to a well-prepared campaign based on the human and material resources of Saddam's old regime.

It is obvious that the Kurds, who have enjoyed de facto autonomy since the early 1990s under the protection of the Allied "No Fly Zone," are not going to accept being subjected to Sunni Arab rule. The Kurdish regional government runs a more or less successful system of political authority. For a decade now, schools in the area have taught in Kurdish and not in Arabic, and a de facto arrangement allows the Kurdish authorities to use oil revenue in the area to pay for impressive development projects.

Given their terrible experiences in the past, the Kurds will accept only the kind of federal structure that guarantees them effective control over their own affairs, including maintaining their own armed forces.

Similarly, the Shiites are not going to accept Sunni hegemony any longer, and the brutal terrorist attacks of the Sunni insurgents against Shiite shrines only strengthens their resolve to insist on a Shiite autonomous region in the south, similar to the Kurdish area in the north.

The Sunnis rightly realize that unless they succeed in re-imposing their power by brute force, they are doomed to minority status - something which is alien to the Sunni Arab tradition. Hence the Sunni boycott of the elections and the attempt by Sunni terrorists to frighten any moderate Sunni ready to cooperate in setting up a democratic Iraq.

Constitutional phraseology is not a remedy for these conundrums.

When the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were on the verge of collapse along ethnic lines, the administration of Bush Senior urged the maintenance of the existing structures: It failed dismally. Iraq may now be going the way of Yugoslavia, yet the U.S. government does not wish to recognize this obvious fact. What is failing in Iraq is not only the attempt to build democracy, but the very attempt to keep the country together.

There is no way of putting Humpty-Dumpty together again. The Kurds and the Shiites will go their separate ways, and both entities have the paramilitary capability to do so. There is no Iraqi army capable of maintaining the unity of the country. And, just as in the former Yugoslavia, the separate countries - Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia - have a better chance of creating coherent and democratic systems than the old coercive Yugoslavia, the same may apply to Iraq.

The U.S. will obviously have to change its policy over Iraq - maybe this is what President George W. Bush is devoting his vacation to. It would be advisable to think outside the box and realize that Iraq is not a country anymore.

This is not the end of the world, but it calls for courageous and creative thinking about alternatives.

this is so true Emmunah. Time to start a pro Kurdish group here in America. And a pro kurdish group in the jewish community. How much can we do I don't know.

Well said Emmenuah... I like that article you posted.

I hope there will be a pro-Kurdish group in America. But don't forget the Turkish lobby is also strong and they are against any form of autonomy for Kurds.

Good to see you back, Emmunah. Saw this post shortly after it appeared, but it was too tough to comment upon. Anything I could say was just too simplistic, but at some point in time (now as it so happens), a guy just has open his mouth regardless . . . Here goes.

One of the most shameful thoughts that I ever had was at age 18, over two and one half decades ago. I thought about suicide. Now, in hindsight, looking back with a perspective gained and broadened through mere experience, I realize that what troubled me so deeply was on the scale of things, extremely light. It was an ordinary thing, a romance gone bad, or maybe just a bad romance, but it hurt me in a way that I had never before experienced, for which I was utterly unprepared, and for which I had no solution. I now look back on that experience as one of the best learning experiences that I could ever have had. But, at the time, I wanted out, I had learned all that I thought that I needed, none of it good, no hope, only pain. So, the thought of suicide entered my mind, and I considered the pro's and the cons. Fortunately, though surely clinically depressed, I was not irrational. Suicide, I thought, was always an option, perhaps the final option, but once chosen, it forcloses all other options. I never took that last option.

The article you quoted strikes me as little different than someone telling himself that his present condition is not life, in effect, he's already dead, so just finish it and commit suicide. Is not a Kurdish State completely separate from Iraq always an option? The real question is whether the suffering now being endured is worth it in the end, and if the end is separation, it surely isn't, but if the end is unity and all the blessings which come from it, the present work, the present suffering, are indeed worth it. The article begs the question while appearing not to do so.

Now, who am I to say these things? No one, absolutely no one. I have no connection to the Iraqi Kurds, I have no connection to Iraqi non-Kurds. So please, no one take offense. These thoughts of mine are presented only for consideration by those who have connection, and they are free to reject them.

Given the recent events closer to home, down south in Alabama and Louisiana, I have had a reoccuring thought. I watched the cable news networks, at first, religiously, but more recently, I can barely stand to watch. Without going into the details of what troubles me most about the cable news reports, take a look at this. Read the post, then read all of the comments, as painful as all of it is. Now, take all of these posters, put them in a room, and ask them to draft a constitution. It should be easy, since they all live happily in a democracy already, but somehow, I cannot see them accomplishing this task successfully on their own. Is it advisable for us to think outside the box and recognize that the majority of these commentators are not really citizens of this democratic republic?

Apples and Oranges? Maybe, but not so different in my opinion to be rejected out of hand.

Hi AGA:

I read that blog entry and have been trying to track down its authenticity ever since. It is supposedly written by a Syrian born Libertarian, but I'm not sure if it's true. I googled "voluteering Astrodome" and there are even bloggers writing daily from there. None of this is mentioned. No one else has said anything else, other than reports of violence.

If someone wants to be a racist, is a libertarian, and hates government hand-outs to the needy, then it makes me think one of two things happened 1. This guy DID go and saw ONLY what he wanted to see. 2. It's a piece of racist trash going around the internet (and it is) and people are posting it as there own, or without documentation.

I have submitted it to "urban legends" or "Snopes" for verification if possible.

I do get your point though, someone put it succinctly in an article "One group of people want a 21st century constitution and another group of people want a 7th century constitution...the others don't want a constitution at all. How do you solve that?". That's my opinion too.

Blogger AngloGermanicAmerican said...

My point was really about the comments, as opposed to the factual accuracy or truth of the first post. Like you, it is hard for me to believe that the account is not skewed in some way, but I am really more concerned with the commentators. If democracy includes each of them, with only the criminals confined to jail and the rest out and about, what has to change, what has to prevail for this small group to be able to agree upon the rules and order of society and to live happily together? I am not suggesting that there is an answer to this question. I am suggesting that thinking about the question answers other questions, or at least gives additional insight.

I have also wondered about other wild, hair brained hypotheticals. Suppose that we, the entire U.S. were voting upon a constitution crafted in the last few months. Would that Constitution look like our present one? That is not the most interesting question, though, for me. What would our citizenship look like during the drafting process? Would they look like a unified country composed of citizens who actually wanted to live together and form a nation? Can you imagine the news coverage of the debate over various provisions, their significance, the supposed real agenda behind the choice of words to be included or ommitted. Every single division among every single group of separate interest within our society all jockeying for air time, all casting the other as either stupid or holding some sinister purpose, and all saying whatever they believe will attract others to their membership or scare others away from their opposition.

Thank God that we don't have to go through it, but if we did, I believe, yes speculate, that it would be ugly, that outside observers would be able to conclude that we were never a nation. As evidence of some slight merit to my speculation, I only need to look back at the last election where people were talking about going to Canada. Imagine that. Following the election, which did not go their way, these citizens of a democracy actually entertain the notion of leaving. Can you imagine what we would look like if the issue was how our constitution was to read?

James,

The comment you make may have some bearing on the "human condition" but it does not have a direct bearing on the topic. You have posted this epistle all over the internet. I should, by rights, consider it nothing but spam or prosyletic material. I will leave this one here, in the hopes that your intent was well meaning, but please understand that a blog has comments to be used for personal unique thoughts in response to the author's post, not for the cross posting of philosophical/Farsi/Chrisitan or other teachings that you wish the whole blogosphere to read.

That being said, it is an interesting piece of writing and I thank you for trying to light the world in the way you see fit. Good will outshine the bad more often than naught.

Semper Fidelis James, but this is not the place to gain an audience.

Please refrain or I will delete the posts, which I do not want to do. I can see how you view human nature and that is all well and good, but it IS a form of advertising for what you consider an important polemic and I don't think that is separate from advertising even if you do. Start your own blog, develop your own audience and for crying out loud...open UP YOUR comments section and tell me what you think when this is done to you. You will find OTHERS have different versions and ideas, and that's good...but the place to have that discussion is on YOUR blog not on everyone elses.

I love your blog Emmunah. How long has it been on-line? Reason I ask is I am doing a ton of work in the area of lowcost web hosting and will probably end up starting a blog of my own. Funny how the internet brought me here when I was doing searches on lowcost web hosting. Oh well, I am glad it did. Keep up the great blogging and I am sure I will visit Thinking The Three Nation Option? again!!

Hey Emmunah. Very nice blog :0) I just got inside from washing and waxing my truck. It is my baby. Took me 2 hours though. So I settled down into my basement and started doing some web surfing. Anyways I am in the process of grabbing my masters degree and have spent the last 6 months researching small business web hosting services. In the midst of my surfing I landed smack dab in the middle of your blog. I hope you do not think I am intruding but I must say it is great blog. Even though Thinking The Three Nation Option? is way off base from small business web hosting services I found myself cruising through your blog archives for the last half hour :0) You have some nice blogging friends. Anyways, I need to get back to my mission. I wrote don’t your url and feel free to visit me here at small business web hosting services. I am so busy so I can only update my site monthly. Keep up the great work.

All I can say is WOW Emmunah. The other half and I just got back from our friends house (well her friends house) and I needed a huge break. I am working on a project right now that is based on commercial web hosting. I have literally been on-line for 2-3 hours doing research. Even though Thinking The Three Nation Option? really isn’t on the same page as commercial web hosting I am certainly glad I came across your blog. There are a ton of great view points on this blog. Well I think I can here the kids screaming in the background. I put you in my internet favorites and I will certainly come back and visit. If you want to take a peek at my site you can find me here at commercial web hosting. I update my site very frequently. Again, great job blogging and I will be back again soon!

Well done on a nice blog Emmunah. I was searching for information on option trading software and came across your post Thinking The Three Nation Option? - not quite what I was looking for related to option trading software but very interesting all the same!

Well, Christmas is over and we're all getting ready for the new years and there aren't many trading days left. Although I'm still trying to grapple with where the dollar's headed next year. My feeling is that it's going to be much the same as this - all over the place, but possibly on the ascendant over the year, mainly due the instability in the Eurozone. And as for stocks, I think the safest thing is to stick to trading the indices. There's still too much downward pressure.

If you do have a moment, please take a look at my new site on: Option Trading .

A merry Christmas to you and yours! Amon

Hi Emmunah, your blog is excellent. As I was surfing around today looking for detailed info on free ipod music I somehow ended up on your page. As your free ipod music is not exactly related to my search, I am certainly glad I
stopped by. Oh well, back to surfing and I am sure I will find what I am looking for, and should you ever need information about lighting photography, then stop by for a look. Thanks for the post.

I have been following a site now for almost 2 years and I have found it to be both reliable and profitable. They post daily and their stock trades have been beating
the indexes easily.

Take a look at Wallstreetwinnersonline.com

Peshmerga, peshmarga or peshmerge is the term used by Kurds to refer to armed Kurdish fighters. Literally meaning "those who face death" (pêş front + merg death e is) the peshmerga forces of Kurdistan have been around since the advent of the Kurdish independence movement in the early 1920s, sportsbook, following the collapse of the Ottoman and Qajar empires which had jointly ruled over the area. Peshmerga forces do make use of female fighters, making Kurdistan one of only three entities in the Middle East that actively uses female soldiers (others being Israel and Iran). http://www.enterbet.com
