Happy Mookata at Serangoon

Visited Happy Mookata - Serangoon for the first time last week! I didn't really know they were THAT popular and had a total of 3 outlets until i googled for the when writing this post.

I have drove past the restaurant a lot recently as i live around the area and have been visiting my friend's Teochew Porridge stall (Ah Seah) to eat (i love!). I always pack my food and go and haven't checked out most restaurants there.

My friends and i decided to check it out one evening, since we were going to play MJ at a friend's place around the corner. When we were outside the restaurant, i actually didnt want to go in. The place looks SOOOO bare like it wasn't open....but there were people inside eating and another friends said she has heard good reviews on Happy Mookata so yeah, why not give it a shot. After all, it isnt good to judge a book by its cover right? Haha.

Oh and wait, maybe i should type is as HaPpY MoOkAtA because that's what the sign shows....haha. I am puzzled and wonder why they choose that to be their logo. It just reminds me of "Twit" Days. DaYz PpL tYpEd LiKe DiZxZ. If you are born before '92, you'd know Twit isn't related to Twitter in any way....it sorta means Ah Lian? Well it was the days where typing X and Zto the word would be a "cool" thing to do....which THANK GOD came and gone FAST.

When we entered, we had to pay $25/person...it was EAT ALL YOU CAN! SO CHEAP!!!! Was what we all exclaimed. I don't think i've been to a Mookata restaurant that cheap....or in fact, a BBQ restaurant. Since the price was like that, i didnt expect much also lah. As long as it's fresh, doesn't smell and tastes ok, i would be contented! Oh and not forgetting good service and nice staff.

We could order fried finger food from the menu and the rest of the raw food we have to take it ourselves from the refrigerator.

Free flow drinks and ice cream!!!! Got Thai Milk Tea which was quite nice.

I'm sorry to say this but the restaurant looks damn dodgy la...i just couldn't stop looking around thinking how i can improve the place. Haha. I guess it's all i think above ever since i started work at ImaginebySK66. Well, at least put up some pictures of food on the walls or something laaaaa. And the lights....omo the lights!!! It was so bright it just made me feel 10x more insecure about my bad skin im facing during pregnancy....haha.

But food wise, not fantastic but not too bad either!!! I ate SOOOO much! Considering i had like 5 beef and 4 garlic chicken all by myself because i liked it most out of the many choices of meat. It wasn't THAAAAT yummy as compared to the garlic chicken at one of my fav mookata places but price so much cheaper so OK la, i understand. The chilli was not bad but for someone who loves spicy stuff, it wasn't spicy enough for me. Wish they had like options for the spice level...actually i could've asked for chilli padi to make it more spicy and maybe i'd like it better then...shall do that the next time round! One thing though, i dont know why but the soup was just very bland, even after 2 hours of eating. From what i remember, most of the time the soup would be super tasty and flavorful but not the case for us at Happy Mookata Serangoon. Still, i was happy with the BBQ!!! I also feel that the service was good...they were quick to serve us and attend to us. Thumbs up.

Oh but i smelled SOOOO bad after the meal...SO SO SO bad. I guess it's expected since we were indoors so yeah.

I would definitely go back there for supper because it opens till late! And yes, the attractive price.

Overall a PlEaSaNt ExPeRiEnCe. :)

Ju Shin Jung

Went for Korean BBQ with Chevonne and Lionel at Ju Shin Jung Guillemard Road branch. I've been to the Katong one before and thought it was not bad!

I've always passed by this one at Guilemmard whenever I went to g.spa and it was always pretty empty but since it was also Ju Shin Jung I decided to give it a try since I was craving KBBQ. Moreover I had baby E with me that day and most of the Korean BBQ restaurants I usually go to (besides Chang BBQ at Dempsey) is rather small and very packed. Not very baby friendly at all.

Who is dis pwetty zeh zeh??

Haha lio and his minions obsession.

I was happy to find out they have an eat all the meat you can for around $40/pax with a soup each. Quite okay price. Well I actually know of a few good Korean BBQ buffets which are much cheaper but usually very packed so I dont really go often. Plus I prefer better quality meat so I rarely go for Korean BBQ buffets.

When I had Ju Shin Jung previously, I didn't have the buffet and had better meat. The marinated chicken and pork they offered for the eat all you can was not too bad. However the beef was SO DISAPPOINTING. I would definitely choose the ala carte option if I only ate beef.

Gimme some of dat!

 Mmmm that looks good

It's super children friendly though! Very spacious place and there's even a play area for kids! Baby E was a little cranky and screamed quite a bit towards the end cus he wanted to go home as it was his sleep time but thank goodness the place was big and I don't think his screaming was THAT deafening and distracting to other customers. Phew! Haha. Also, because Ju Shin Jung was a pretty big and spacious restuarant we didn't end up walking out smelling like BBQ. So yay to that!

I would recommend it for dinner in big groups as they have quite a few private rooms available. And yes, if you are dining with a baby or children, this would be a good Korean BBQ place to go to compared to most places! However, i am not a huge fan as I feel there's better KBBQ restaurants in Singapore. But I think I would still go back though because not many KBBQ restaurants are as baby friendly and have so many private rooms. Afterall, the food isn't bad, it's so-so but not WOW.

Fresh Oysters at Wharf

I remember i used to HATE oysters when i was younger. I'm the kind who says i love "orh lua" (fried oyster omelette) but don't eat the oysters in it. It has this weird smell and taste...like hum. Haha.

But anyway, after i tried REALLY fresh oysters, i learnt to LOVE IT. I still think it's something not EVERYONE would like but if you like it, this is a place in Singapore to check out for yummy fresh oysters!

I went to Oyster Bar and Grill Wharf at Chijmes. They have 3 outlets in Singapore!

So i usually have fresh oysters at Buffets (The Line or Carousel) or Japanese restaurants. At buffets, it's much cheaper but it's really a gamble, sometimes you get fresh ones, sometimes you don't. At Japanese restaurants it was really really expensive so usually i limit myself to just 2 oysters. It was my first time trying oysters at an Oyster Bar and for $60 i can get a dozen.

We were served oysters from different countries and my favourite has to be the ones from Aussie. I wonder if i can go and order a dozen from only one particular country? I'll try that the next time. Hehe. The rest weren't bad la, all also yummy and super fresh but i just prefer the ones from Aussie better even though i don't really know why haha.

Still, it was definitely a pleasant experience and i sure satisfied my fresh oyster craving!

We also had the beef steak - it was so-so, nothing amazing, and a caesar salad which was pretty good - hard to go wrong with caesar salad, if it's bad then something must be wrong with the restaurant liao haha. Didn't order much as i was still kinda full from my tea break and we were there around 6ish but i would love to go back there for more oysters and maybe try more of their other dishes. :)

So yes, for Fresh Oysters in Singapore....check out Oyster Bar and Grill Wharf!

Beauty in the Pot

A lot of my friends told me i had to try Beauty in the Pot since i'm such a huge fan of steamboat. And when asked if it's better than Hai Di Lao, they all said Yes!

So most of my friends, like myself, are huge HDL fans and for a Hai Di Lao fan to say something like that, Beauty in the Pot HAD to be SOMETHING.

So i finally got to try it myself and I AM SOOO HAPPY I DID.

I just got home from dinner and since i have a bit of time now (better do it now because this month is crazy busy with the opening of the imagine interior design showroom), i decided to do a blog post on it to share this good steamboat place with ya'll!

And for the first time, there's another steamboat restaurant which can be compared to Hai Di Lao!

The Beauty Collagen Broth is made by boiling Shark Cartilage for hours AND IT IS SO GOOD I HAD LIKE 8 BOWLS OF IT. NOT KIDDING.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Spicy Pork Broth but it wasn't BAD. Just that the Beauty Collagen Broth was SO GOOD i just didn't want to waste space in my tummy on the Spicy Broth. For a person who has ALWAYS preferred a spicy soup base when having steamboat, THIS TIME WAS DIFFERENT FOR ME. And i think that itself tells how good the Collagen soup base is already. Haha.

The must order items are the Crispy Beancurd Skin! I remember trying something similar before at Imperial Treasure Steamboat. So what you have to do is dip this into the boiling soup for about 3 seconds and eat it. It's chewy and absorbs the soup.

This Prawn Paste with Fish Roe is also another Must-Try! I love the Prawn Paste at HDL but this...HAS EBIKO! Which gives it a really nice texture when you bite into it.

So Beauty in the Pot V.S Hai Di Lao, which is better?

I won't say Beauty in the Pot was better...it's rather different!!! BOTH ARE EQUALLY SUPER GOOD AND I WOULD KEEP GOING BACK TO BOTH.

Food
I felt that the food at Beauty in the Pot was better but choices were pretty limited compared to HDL. The Beef and Pork at Beauty in the Pot were REALLY good!!! Not like HDL's one is bad, it's also good but i feel like the quality at BitP was better. Oh and not the mention, i love the crab sticks at Beauty in the Pot! It was the super sweet kind - like those japanese ones, not that rectangularish supermarket one. Oh please don't laugh at how i describe food. I just....am not cut out to do food blogging because i just can't find the right words. Lol. The prawn paste at Beauty in the Pot was also better than HDL's squeezed out prawn paste. But one thing cannot win HDL, the "la mian"! The HDL la man is so QQ and yums. Oh and did you know HDL's hot dog is also damn good? It's like a bit crunchy one. Haha. But ya la, it's processed food. Everytime i eat at HDL with older friends, they'd be like "yeah i guess you're really still a kid" because i love fish balls, crab sticks and hot dogs. Haha.

Soup
Well if you are a fan of spicy soup base, then HDL wins because their Ma La broth is THE BOMB. But if you prefer a non-spicy soup base, then Beauty in the Pot's Collagen soup takes the cake! Oh and well, i'm super Beauty in the Pot's soup is also much healthier....since the collagen soup has SO MANY health benefits.

Dipping Sauce Station
I preferred the choices of dipping sauces at Hai Di Lao as the choices at Beauty in the Pot was rather limited. Im a huge Hai Di Lao special sauce + extra soy bean chilli paste (if you haven't tried this, the next time you're at HDL, ask the waiter/waitress to prepare the special sauce for you!)! OHHHHH and at HDL, you can eat as much fruits as you want!! AND THE YUMMY SILKY BEAN CURD PUDDING....EAT ALL YOU WANT! That is probably something i wish Beauty in the Pot had...FREE FRUITS!!! Cus i always like to have something nice and sweet after a full meal, no matter how full i am. Such a sweet tooth...haiz.

Service
The service at HDL is much better though. People at HDL are just always SOOOO polite, attentive and smiley! I don't think there's a restaurant with such a huge number of happy working waiters and waitresses?! AT ALL THE OUTLETS (yeah, i've already been to all 3 HDL outlets in Singapore haha). I don't think the service at Beauty in the Pot was bad though but it was a little bit harder to get the attention of the staff...unlike HDL whereby there're SUPER quick to attend to you and start to refill your drinks when it's only about half-full.

Price
For 2 at HDL, i usually pay about $130 and i think i order more food at HDL. For 2 at Beauty in the Pot, i paid about $150. So i THINK HDL is a lil bit cheaper! But not a huge difference really. I heard if you go after 10pm, it's 20% off your bill!!!! Not sure if it's true but you can call to confirm?

So yup, that's my review on Beauty in the Pot, definitely a place i'd go back to over and over again. Like HDL. So it will depend if i wanted to go healthy or unhealthy that day. Haha.

Oh and unlike HDL, it's possible to make a reservation at Beauty in the Pot, which means, NO LONG HOURS OF QUEUEING!

Must try!!!!

Favourite Instant Noodles

I haven't done a post like this for awhile and well, this is gonna be a very unhealthy one. Haha.

I stayed away from Instant Noodles during my pregnancy as I wanted to eat healthier for my baby and after giving birth too, as I wanted to eat clean to lose weight. However, now that I have given birth and lost the excess weight, my unhealthy diet is back. I can't resist my favourite instant noodles! I know it isn't doing my hair loss issues any good though. :(

Anyway, here is my list of my favourite instant noodles available in Singapore (although some are pretty hard to find and only available at specific supermarkets)!

Realised I've never share with you all before hehe.

1. Myojo Chicken Bee Hoon
This one is the "healthiest" choice among all as it's "Bee Hoon". The packaging also looks very plain and boring. Some more it's chicken flavor, I never liked chicken flavored noodles as I prefer spicy stuff. But when I was very young and at my friend's house, her maid cooked this and it smelt AMAZING. Since then, i always have this in my kitchen to have on days I want something more "plain". It's really not that plain though, you have to try it yourself! The other flavors kinda suck though. The Tom Yum one not nice one...which is weird because to me Tom Yum is always nicer than the rest.

2. Myojo Tom Yum
If I had to choose a favourite instant noodle brand in Singapore, it'll be Myojo! I don't really like the Tom Yum instant noodles in Singapore after trying those from Thailand but if I had to choose one easily available in Singapore, I'd pick this.

3. Yum Yum Shrimp Tom Yum
Now this is my all time favourite tom yum instant noodles!!! Can't find it in Singapore besides the thai supermarket at Golden Mile. Usually buy it from Bangkok's Big C or 7-11s. Everyone loves "mama" brand tom yum instant noodles one but I feel that mama isn't that tasty!! Once you try this you'd not like "mama"! I feel la.

4. NongShim Mushroom Ramyun
This one is probably the most popular one and most people's favourite! I loooove the springy noodles! I only like the bowl and packet one as the noodles are the thick kind...the cup one kinda sucks.

5. Samyang Chicken Spicy Noodles aka Korean Fire Noodles
My favourite at the moment!!!! I first tried it late last year as my friend who knows I love spicy stuff bought it for me to test my tolerance for spice. Little did I expect it to be no big challenge at all!! I was HOOKED instead and couldn't stop since then. I admit it was spicy when I first tried it but after having it 2 more times, it became a shiok kinda spicy to me. Like Nong Shim, I only like the bowl and packet one because the noodles are the springy kind! This is served dry so the texture of the noodles are even nicer and chewier!

6. Indomie Mi Goreng
Best served with a fried egg on top! Oh and more fried onions. The black sauce is sweet and when mixed with the salty seasoning, it's perfect! Only wish the noodles were like the Korean Fire Noodles. Maybe one day I should sacrifice one packet of fire noodles and use the noodles for this.

7. Cintan Mi Goreng Pedas
A spicy Mee Goreng which again, isn't easily found in Singapore. Not many people I know have tried this before and I wish more people could Cus it's good man. In fact, I don't know where this is from! Indo or Malaysia? Anyway, this one smells AMAZING and has a very unique taste compared to most mi Goreng I've tried. I only see it in Mustafa in Singapore but if you know where else has it, let me know!

I do have more but I think I'll stop here already hehe. That is my Top 7 Instant Noodles list and I hope I introduced you something nice to try! I think my list is quite unique and different lah.

What's your favourite instant noodles??? I have tried almost every instant noodle commonly found in Singapore but i'd like to know which is the most popular one! Oh, and if you have any "rare" brands, feel free to share it with me. I am looking high and low for a good Ma La instant noodles! Want it to curb my midnight Ma La cravings...on nights nobody is free to go have Haidilao with me. Haha.

The Clan

I am super happy to blog about this restaurant i had dinner at yesterday. This is not a paid post! I have found a new favourite restaurant and i'm sooo going back there again!

Ok so, i've been looking for DOZO and wondering why they closed down their Valley Point restaurant and never returned despite the great review on the restaurant. Someone left me a comment letting me know about The Clan and recommended i try that so i told my friends who were DOZO fans to go check it out. Then after i took a picture at the place, another friend WA me and told me that The Clan was opened by the Head Chef of Dozo! Which then, everything made sense because the menu was kinda familiar and so was the food quality.

Probably one of the most pocket friendly 6-course French-Japanese dinner you can find in Singapore.  Around $70/person for a 6-course meal. I have been to many restaurants which cost more than double the price however the experience can't beat the experience at The Clan. Food tastes AMAZING. I thought their service was good as well. BIG THUMBS UP!!! Thank you those who recommended me The Clan when i complaint about DOZO. I really had a wonderful experience!

Some food pictures!
