Last Saturday evening, I was lucky enough to go with the other Wellington Sewing Bloggers to the busy opening night of the Home Sewn exhibition at the Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt. The exhibition is a touring exhibition curated by Doris du Pont from the New Zealand Fashion Museum in Auckland. And what an evening! The museum was full of ladies (and the odd man) who was wearing something hand sewn in New Zealand.
The evening started with chatting, posing for photos and a fashion show. The judges, including designer and historian Doris du Pont, had difficulty choosing their favourites from the before clothes on show. Unfortunately I didn't get any photos of the winners (we were too far away.)
Following this we had the opportunity to view the exhibition of New Zealand Home Sewn fashions from the 1930s to the current day. So many fabulous outfits on display.
A room full of pretties!
The guy in this photo has only been sewing for a year and made both the shirt and trousers - I was definitely impressed
I love the pleated top of this dress, plus it's from the 50s, so it's an instant like for me :-)
My aunt had a dress just like the one n the left for parties!
Colours, colours, psychedelic colours!
Look at this dress, I love the back on this!
Look at the flowers on the skirt and bodice
I love the simplicity of this dress, made in 2011
This was drafted and made about a year ago by a 94 year old
I love that this pattern is illustrated with the dress which was also on show
I'll end with our obligatory group photo, with new members! :-)
Don't we scrub up well?
OK, from left to right
Yours truly

That was such a fun night! You ladies are all awesome. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd you're just as awesome!
DeleteThis does sound like you all had fun! What did we do before the internet? Oh yeah, sew without a community of sewists!
ReplyDeleteAnd we felt like we were the only one's sewing too! I have to admit for years I felt like I was a one and only! The Interweb has a lot to answer for - dare I say it!
DeleteGreat photos Nikki! :) So even though I missed the opening night fun do you still think it's worth a look at the exhibition?
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I reckon the exhibition is worth it. There are certainly lots of lovely outfits there. The fabrics are beautiful. And it's really lovely to see how some are put together.
DeleteI'm so sad I couldn't make it along - the more photos I see the more jealous I become!
ReplyDeleteWe missed you too. But go have a look see, the outfits are fab. I know you've missed the party, but...
DeleteWhat great photos, it looked like it was a wonderful evening. I need to make some time to get over to Dowse. I enjoyed reading the Home Sewn book.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely worth a look. It was a good evening too, missed you!
DeleteOh this exhibition would definitely be my cup of tea too... how I wish I could have joined you!! What fun, and some really gorgeous garments too. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo collection! Was so much fun and you looked great. And essential floof was floofy! Now to steal your photos... credited of course!
