Review/Giveaway: Jesus Today: Devotions for Kids

Giveaway below! Scroll down and comment on this post for a chance to win!

We've been talking a lot about plans lately. Is there a perfect plan for your life? Can you veer off the plan and then need to figure out Plan B since you messed up Plan A? And then Plan C and D and on through ZZZZZ?

Or does God know you so intimately, having formed you as you are, that He knows exactly what choices you will make, and lovingly sets up the events that will shape your life for His perfect purpose? Can you trust Him with each moment and not stress over whether you've messed it all up when you turned left instead of right?

Lots of stuff to think about, especially for our kiddos who have their whole lives ahead, their dreams all within reach. How do we keep them grounded in Christ, an integral part of each day of their lives?

Synopsis of Book
Jesus is the Friend who is always with you. Jesus Today: Devotions for Kids will pour this powerful truth into your children's hearts as they learn that He knows everything about them and loves them more than they can imagine.  Each devotion is based on Scripture and is written as though Jesus is speaking directly to you, assuring that He is in control, that He is good, and that an amazing future awaits all who put their hope in Him.  Adapted from the ECPA 2013 Christian Book of the Year-winner Jesus Today, this devotional has the same themes as the adult version, as well as written-out scriptures.  It is a great choice for families to read and discuss during devotional time together.
About the Author

Mom’s Review:

Organization. There are two pages for each of 150 days; a devotional, written in first person as if it is Jesus speaking, followed by three scripture references. The days are not dated, so you can pick up the book and start at any time of the year - a big plus for me! There is a scripture index at the back, so this could be used as a reference book while reading through the Bible, as well as a daily devotional.

Appearance. This is a durable hardback with bold color. The graphic layout is fun, even cute, but gender neutral. A nice, attractive book that should stand the wear of being picked up and read 150 days in a row.

Bible Verses. One of my favorite parts; it gives Biblical context to the devotion and can be used for further study if desired. Scriptures are taken from the International Children's Bible, so they can be easily understood.

Devotions. In fairly simple language, though the concepts might be complex for a 6yo, these devotions personalize Jesus for a child.

Overall, a nice addition to encourage and enhance your child's daily encounters with  God!

Review/Giveaway: The Biggest Story

EveEsmé has grown up on Bible stories. When she was a bitty 3yo, she grasped tenaciously onto the story of the snake, acting the scene of the Fall out over and over again.

Concerned, I sat her down for a chat. What was her fascination with this serpent?

“Mommy, the serpent can really talk!” she exclaimed.

Of course, I thought.  My daughter has ALWAYS loved stories where the animals can “really talk.”  I generally explain that it’s just pretend, but for once, here is a story that’s NOT pretend, and the animal can indeed really talk.

Boy, can that snake talk. He’s distracting us, then reminding us of our failures, again and again.

But. Shining through the cacophony, there is the constant WORD – Logos – the ultimate communicator - the One who spoke and it was so. The Snake Crusher.

“In the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with God, and the WORD was God.”

“The WORD became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”

And the WORD, bruised for our failures, crushed that talking snake’s head.

All those colorful Bible stories – Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, the manger – they’re nice all on their own. Great for a bedtime story or a quick overview on a Sunday morning. But their power comes in their entirety. How do all these stories fit together into a vivid portrayal of the Snake Crusher and a return to the Garden?

Can a little kid understand The Biggest Story?

Biggest Story Esme Cover

Absolutely.

Enter The Biggest Story: How the Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden.

Synopsis of Book

标准5 Model (1)

Once upon a time there lived a man and a woman. They were the happiest people on the planet.

True, they were the only people on the planet, but they were still terrifically happy.

Unfortunately, things didn’t stay happy and wonderful for long . . .

The Bible is full of exciting stories that fill children with awe and wonder. But kids need to know how all those classic stories connect to Scripture’s overarching message about God’s glorious plan to redeem his rebellious people.

In The Biggest Story, Kevin DeYoung—a best-selling author and father of six—leads kids and parents alike on an exciting journey through the Bible, connecting the dots from the garden of Eden to Christ's death on the cross to the new heaven and new earth.

With powerful illustrations by award-winning artist Don Clark, this imaginative retelling of the Bible’s core message—how the Snake Crusher brings us back to the garden—will draw children into the biblical story, teaching them that God's promises are even bigger and better than we think.

Biggest Story ContentMom’s Review:

  • The Story. I love how all those familiar little children’s stories are woven together in a bigger motif, a constant theme of God working to fulfill His promise. Each chapter is short enough to read easily at bedtime and wraps up nicely, but always with anticipation for the next chapter of God’s story.
  • The Illustrations. The colorful illustrations are what jump out immediately when picking up the book. Bright, bold, “cool designs,” as Esmé says. We would play a little game of looking at the chapter header designs and guessing what the chapter would be about. The illustrations make this an attractive gift book. They also tie the story concepts together. There are dark pages, monotonous pages, pages with a glimpse of light. Look at the bright, beautiful garden! biggest-story-related-media2x-1
  • The Humor. The writing is fun at times – not comedic but just enough to make you smile. Try reading this one aloud, and you’ll see what I mean: “How would God save a couple million people from slavery? It’s not like he could just turn the Nile River into blood and send frogs and goats and flies and disease and boils and hail and locusts and darkness and death until the king of Egypt let them go!”
  • The Age Range. The picture-book format, broken up into short chapters, can hold the attention of younger ones. However, the comprehensive way the stories are all tied together make this more than the ordinary picture book – it is thought-provoking for the olders as well.

Review/Giveaway: The Apologetics Study Bible

How do you answer the hard questions?

  • If God is real and we can’t see Him, why don’t you think mermaids are real?
  • If angels can become invisible, why can’t humans?
  • I know God created the world, but what do I tell other people who insist science and Creation are not compatible? Why do they think that?
  • How is Christianity different than other religions? Are the differences important?
  • My friend isn’t a Christian because her dad thinks it’s stupid, and he’s an atheist. But she’s a nice person. What should I say to her?
  • Why were people killed in the name of Christianity?
  • Why does God allow people to get sick and die? Doesn’t He want us to be happy?Apologetics

One of the challenges of raising Miss Esmé has been getting bombarded with such questions since she was 3yo. I love that she thinks about such things, but I don’t always have ready answers.

That’s where the Apologetics Study Bible for Students HCSB comes in handy!

Synopsis of Book

The Apologetics Study Bible for Students anchors younger Christians in the truths of Scripture by equipping them with thoughtful and practical responses for whenever the core issues of their faith and life are challenged.

Multiple research studies have shown that spiritual focus often weakens among teenagers as they head into the attention-dividing realm of young adulthood. Up to 66 percent of them leave church altogether. The Apologetics Study Bible for Students works against that trend by helping this audience begin to better articulate its beliefs. In addition to the complete HCSB text and dozens of articles collected from today’s most popular youth leaders, including editor Sean McDowell, this new study Bible also includes:

Two-color design-intensive layout on every page for the visual generation Sixty “Twisted Scriptures” explanations, fifty “Bones & Dirt” entries (archaeology meets apologetics) Fifty “Notable Quotes”, twenty-five “Tactics” against common anti-Christian arguments Twenty “Personal Stories” of how God has worked in real lives Twenty “Top Five” lists to help remember key apologetics topics.

Age Recommendation: High school/college
Genre:  Study Bible

List Price:  For Indexed Hardcover: $44.99. Currently on sale for $31.49 (30% savings)

Mom’s Review:

  • The Translation. I found this to be a very “readable” version. This was an introduction to the Holman Christian Standard Bible for me. It is a modern language translation that combines word-for-word with thought-for-thought philosophies to allow for a smooth reading experience. In the instances where it veers from a literal translation, footnotes allow the reader to still access that literal translation.
  • Articles, Twisted Scripture Notes (60), Challenges and Tactics (25). These segments, interspersed throughout the Bible, are the parts that answer all those questions Esmé pops up with. There is an index at the front if you’re looking for a specific topic, but it’s also fun to just start up a discussion on whatever shows up on the Bible section we’re reading. These are written by a variety of authors, and it’s interesting to see similar topics addressed from different angles.
  • Bones & Dirt Notes (50). If your student is into history, these are interesting to read. You can see how current events and places relate to the Bible text.
  • Personal Stories (20). This would probably be Esmé’s favorite aspect. Twenty personal stories make scripture obviously applicable to today’s youth.
  • Book Introductions. These are narratives in a conversational style meant to reach the student in a modern culture. The “What in the world is going on?” section is my personal favorite as it pulls together historic details from around the world. For example, while Psalms were being written, not only was the Iron Age beginning, but the “chiefs of the Olmecs, a pre-Columbian people group in southern Mexico, play an extremely violent, ritualistic ball game juego de pelota.”  It just intrigues me.
  • Index Tabs. The format of the book we have includes index tabs to help Bible students find the books of the Bible. We found that quite useful.
  • Formats. Speaking of formats, look at this pretty Espresso/Coral cover! Lots of format choices to meet your student’s preferences!

Some Precautions:
This isn’t a fit for everyone. If you fall into one of the following categories, think seriously before purchasing.

  • Politically Correct. The notes are mostly written from a socially conservative perspective. They tackle abortion and homosexuality pretty directly, for example. One of the articles that was most pertinent to me was “Do Christianity and Politics Mix,” and I agree with the point that trying to keep secular and sacred separate essentially pigeonholes God.
  • Mormon, Jehovah’s Witness. There are sections that take on the biblical veracity of Mormon and Jehovah’s Witness beliefs head-on.

The notes go into doctrinal issues in depth, and there were a couple here and there with emphasis that didn’t exactly line up with my personal beliefs, for example, on the topic of hell. Overall, however, I found the notes to be insightful and a great resource for strengthening my daughter’s Christian beliefs and positions in a world that seems less and less tolerant of those positions every day.

The LEGO Movie Giveaway

To be honest, I have a grudge against LEGO at the moment.  Esmé dumped an entire tub of LEGOs onto her closet floor on accident, and they are not particularly fun to navigate in early morning hours when I am barefoot and trying to get a warm sweater out for her to wear.

That particular incident aside, typically I do appreciate the creativity factor of her LEGOs and find the LEGO aisle of the toy section quite tolerable, unlike certain other aisles.

Legopromo2

About The Lego Movie

The LEGO® Movie, the first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO® adventure, directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller is an original 3D computer animated story that follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

Chris Pratt (Moneyball) stars as the voice of Emmet. Will Ferrell (The Campaign) stars as the voice of his primary adversary, President Business, an erudite, anal-retentive CEO who has a hard time balancing world domination with micro-managing his own life; while Liam Neeson (Taken) voices the president's powerful henchman, known as Bad Cop, who will stop at nothing to catch Emmet.

Starring as Emmet's fellow travelers are Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby), as Vitruvius, an old mystic; Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Emmy nominee for 30 Rock), as tough-as-nails Lucy, who mistakes Emmet for the savior of the world and guides him on his quest; Will Arnett (Emmy nominee, 30 Rock), as the mysterious Batman, a LEGO minifigure with whom Lucy shares a history; Nick Offerman (NBC's Parks and Recreation) as a craggy, swaggering pirate, obsessed with revenge on President Business; and Alison Brie (Community) as a sweet, loveable member of the team, with a powerful secret.

Review/Giveaway: The Sparkle Egg

Since my sparkly little 6yo Esmé enjoyed The Sparkle Box last Christmas, I wasn’t surprised that she jumped all over the opportunity to check out The Sparkle Egg

And I, being overwhelmed with busyiness and nowhere near ready to pay this season the respect due, was thrilled with a sparkly new tool to share the message of God’s gift with her.  Frankly, the gift of grace, the focus of this book, is a message I need myself every once in a while – or every moment…

SparkleEgg
Synopsis

Easter is coming, and Sam loves Easter! But this year, he is upset about a lie he told his parents. Even though he apologized and they forgave him, Sam can’t shake the feeling that he is a bad kid for what he did. Meanwhile, his parents help him make a special Easter craft called a Sparkle Egg. His mom tells him to write anything he feels sorry about or ashamed of on a piece of paper and put it inside his Sparkle Egg.

On Easter morning, when he opens his Sparkle Egg expecting a surprise, Sam finds that it is empty! His parents explain that because Jesus died and rose again, we are forgiven. Like the tomb that first Easter Day, Sam's egg is empty—and Sam’s wrongdoing is completely forgiven. Once he accepts this forgiveness fully, Sam realizes a truth: we can sparkle and shine with God’s light when we let God’s gift of grace into our hearts. This touching story will strike a deep chord with readers of all ages, and the Sparkle Egg tradition will help readers and their families grasp the totality of God’s perfect grace.

About the Author
Jill Hardie’s first book, The Sparkle Box, ignited a new Christmas tradition that helps center Christmas in the true joy of the season. Now Jill is hoping to touch lives with a new Easter tradition with The Sparkle Egg. She lives in North Canton, Ohio.
About the Illustrator
Christine Kornacki illustrated the highly acclaimed The Sparkle Box. She has a love for painting and a knack for bringing stories to life. Mom’s Review
To be honest, I felt a hint of trepidation when cracking this book open with Esmé.  We’re not an Easter basket type of family, and I was concerned that Esmé would start to feel like she was missing out on the “chocolate egg” type of stuff many kids associate with Easter.  But I had decided she was old enough to accept that people celebrate differently and we have our reasons for what we do, so we plowed ahead…

…and thoroughly enjoyed this sweet, relatable story.

I love how the author – once again – connects some of the “trappings” of the holiday to a very meaningful, tangible message of the gospel – in a way that is easy for kids to relate to.

It is in much the same vein as The Sparkle Box, and we enjoyed the same aspects of it.  It is an easy read-aloud, with a little sparkle and colorful illustrations that fit the story.  The colors are gender-neutral; the sparkle appeals to this little girl, while the story-line is about a boy.  Being in school herself, taking spelling tests, struggling with honesty issues from time to time, Esmé could easily relate to Sam’s experience.

Most importantly, she could relate to that need for forgiveness and grace, and that sense of relief that comes from realizing it is hers.

And that’s where the story is different from The Sparkle Box.  It is not so much about giving as it is about receiving – and understanding that the Greatest Gift of all is far more than chocolate eggs in a basket.

The story can easily extend beyond the pages by making your own Sparkle Egg – following Sam’s example and then placing the egg where it can serve as a daily reminder of God’s gift of forgiveness.

And now, we have a giveaway copy of this sparkly book for you to kick off this season of grace!  US or Canada addresses only on this one.

Giveaway: iParent.TV Subscription

So, 6yo Miss Esmé was doing her AR reading homework tonight, a book called Dolphin Tale, and next thing I know, she’s followed a website link at the back of the book and is watching all kinds of video documentaries on Winter the dolphin, figuring out how tails are made so she can make a mermaid tail of her own as soon as she’s saved up $300.

P1100824

Thanks to her typing skills (thanks, Dance Mat) and love of all things video, she’s navigating online pretty well these days.  The other day, she was watching a bunch of homemade Barbie dramatizations on YouTube, and next thing I know, she’s watching a violent crime scene reenacted by Ken and Barbie, complete with ketchup? blood.  Ingenious, I admit, but not something I really wanted her to see.

When she’s not on her laptop, she’s often messing around with my iPod or her daddy’s iPhone.  And the little preschool apps we started her off with aren’t keeping her interest anymore.

Which makes me very interested in iParent.TV.  Even though she’s not unsupervised while online, we’re often otherwise occupied.  I’m not about to remove her laptop, because I love the role technology plays in her education. She has access to so many tools and tidbits right at her fingertips.

About iParent.TV

What is iParent.TV? If your kids are awake, they’re probably on a smartphone, in front of a smart tv, downloading apps, or posting to social networks. And most likely you have no idea what they’re doing. iParent.TV will be a yearly, subscription-based website for teaching and informing parents on all things tech, mobile, devices, websites, and apps for kids so that you WILL know.

The Problem. Most parents don't have an inside track to tech or social media dangers, let alone how to safeguard their kids against them.

Introducing iParent.TV - keeping parents ahead of the tech curve. We believe we have the opportunity to help parents understand, get involved and safeguard their children in the ever-evolving tech World. iParent.TV educates parents with all the latest trends via Websites - Social Media - Apps - Devices

The idea. It started with a group of dads who felt like their 9-year-olds knew more about tech than they did. They were right. But their idea will help change that forever for all parents. Once launched, iParent.TV will have 100s of videos and product reviews that are very current, cutting edge and trending, keeping parents who subscribe ahead of the tech curve.

How it will work? The iParent.TV website will be a subscription-based site costing $49 per year for parents to access all the videos, reviews, how-tos, and live chat support. Warner Bros. Month of Love DVD Giveaway

Watching 6yo Esmé navigate the Valentine’s scene at school has been amusing.  From “secret admirers” to envelopes 3 feet across that she can barely carry, she is loving it all.  And she sees hearts everywhere, picking up a rock in the driveway and handing it to me with a “Happy Valentine’s, Mom!”

And what would this month be without the sweets?  Who knew there could be so many different types of heart-shaped lollipops in one little town, not to mention heart-stamped candies of all kinds?

If you’re like me and would like a little nutrition sliding down along with the candy, here are some festive recipes for your perusal.

Review/Giveaway: The Promise DVD

Ahhhh… Tis the season of Christmas movies!  For once I’m the one putting in the DVDs each day, instead of waiting for Esmé to beg for her movie time.

The ones I enjoy most are those that depict that first Christmas.  And The Promise does just that, bringing the first story in Luke to life in animated musical form.

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.
Holy, Holy is His name.

promise-coverSynopsis

The Promise: The Birth of the Messiah is an animated musical celebration of one of the most pivotal events in all human history, the birth of Jesus Christ.

This beautifully crafted musical is a faithful adaptation of the birth narrative from the Gospel of Luke in both story and song. The animated production leverages optical motion technology to blend traditional animation techniques with the performance talents of ballet dancers and dramatic stage actors. The result is a unique and worshipful story experience that will inspire audiences young and old for years to come.

6yo Esmé’s Unsolicited Review:

I really liked that!  There are lots of movies about Baby Jesus, but this is special because it is mostly music, and I get to learn the songs as well as see the story!

What Mom Liked

Ah, the Promise!  God always keeps His promises, and I love how this movie weaves that theme into the storyline.

So much of the nativity story is lyrical, musical, just in the reading, and this DVD really brings out that element of the story.  As Esmé pointed out, she’s seen a lot of movies about that first Christmas, and this would be the feature that stands out most when compared to all the rest.

Also, while there are some creative dramatizations (e.g. the personalities of Mary’s parents) to build a flowing storyline, I like how the storyline stays true to scripture and incorporates actual verses into the dialogue and music.  While we have a lot of favorites in the fictional genre regarding that first Christmas night, it is refreshing to have a more Biblical account in movie format as well.

The animation is nicely done, including panoramic views.

Esmé and I both weren’t ready for the movie to end when it did.  There is so much more to the Jesus story!  Maybe there’ll be some follow-ups?

One negative for me:  I wish it had subtitles.  Having hearing loss and just being a more visual learner to begin with, I find that I get a lot more out of movies when the subtitles are running, even if the volume is high enough for me to understand everything.

And now, we have a giveaway copy of this DVD to help you focus on the things that matter most at this busy time of year!  US or Canada addresses only on this one.

Review/Giveaway: The First Christmas Night

We’ve got two boxes of Christmas books that make their way into the living room each year.  And I have a list of favorites we check out from the library, as well.  You won’t find many about Santa Claus in the stack.  Nothing against him personally, but we’ve tried to keep the main focus on Jesus ever since Miss Esmé was tiny.

When looking for new books to to add to our lineup, I’ve often been disappointed by redundancy.  It takes special talent to tell the same story in a new, fresh way that glistens with the awesomeness of that first Christmas night. The First Christmas Night

I think this latest addition to our Christmas collection displays that special talent.  Keith Christopher transforms the comfortable, rhythmic lines of the classic ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas into an even sweeter rendition of the miraculous first Christmas, while illustrator Christine Kornacki makes the story glow with radiance in warm illustrations that perfectly complement the text.

Synopsis

The First Christmas Night is a beautiful retelling of the birth of Jesus on that joyous night in Bethlehem so long ago. The poem begins with the arrival of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem and winds though Christ’s birth, the angels’ appearance to the shepherds, and the visit by the Wise Men.  The simple, yet elegant, verses will appeal to little ones and are accompanied by the rich acrylic illustrations of Christine Kornacki.

Twas the very first Christmas when all through the town
not a creature was stirring—there was not a sound.
The moon shining bright in the heavens so high
gave the look of midday to the Bethlehem sky.
The animals were nestled in warm, cozy places
with looks of contentment on each of their faces.

About the Author
Keith Christopher is a composer, arranger, orchestrator, and educator, and he has served as editor and producer for several major music publishers. In addition to writing and studio producing, Keith is on the faculty at the Blair School of Music of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He lives in Hendersonville, Tennessee, with his wife and two children.
About the Illustrator
At a very early age, Christine Kornacki developed a love for painting and bringing stories to life. After receiving a BFA in illustration from the University of Hartford, her dreams of illustrating children's books began to take shape, including illustrating the best-selling The Sparkle Box for Ideal's Children's Books. Christine's recent work also includes illustrating the six-book series for the American Girl historical doll characters Marie-Grace and Cecile.  She spends her days painting in her studio, which adjoins a charming cafe in New Haven, Connecticut.

What Mom Liked

It’s all about Jesus.

The text is a sweet, rhythmic read-aloud – it brings back visions of classic Christmases past, only with a brighter storyline.  It can also serve as a nice easy reader for young readers.

The illustrations draw me back to the book time and again.  There is a glow to them, a light that draws one in to the pictures, wanting to get closer.  The faces are beautiful but not distant, people you’d want to get to know.

I can see this becoming a memorized favorite over the next few years.  It works nicely in a family setting, and would also serve well in a group setting such as a children’s church.

And now, we have a giveaway copy of this sweet book to help you focus on the things that matter most at this busy time of year!  US or Canada addresses only on this one.

Review/Giveaway: 1 Girl Nation

I confess – I am a fan of 80s/90s music.  I’m not too fond of current stuff.  I usually skip over music review offers.

I have some lovely nieces, however, who introduced us to One Direction via our karaoke machine on a visit awhile back.  So – when I saw One Direction mentioned in the blurb about 1 Girl Nation – and since 6yo Miss Esmé was at the [very low end of] the target range for 1 Girl Nation, I figured we’d at least check out their YouTube videos.

Wow!

Let’s just say they were an immediate hit with fancy-dancy kidlet.  And I found their music rather catchy myself.  So Miss Esmé decided to commence on her first video review (below just a bit).

This is music you move to, you sleep to, you wake up to, you drive to.  It moves you, inspires you, compels you.

I woke Esmé up with their album one day, figuring it’s never too early to “live for Jesus” and “love like crazy,” and then as we were driving to school, she *made* me turn off the other CD I had been listening to in the car.  “I want to remember that 1 Girl Nation song all day!  This other song is messing up my memory!”  So I’ve just started transporting the CD between the house and the car…

image_thumbAbout 1 Girl Nation

Landing in the space where One Direction meets TobyMac, 1 Girl Nation is an exciting blend of upbeat pop music, with lyrics that are totally focused on living life for God, even while you’re young. 1GN, as they’ve already been dubbed, stars Carmen, Kayli, Kelsey, Lauryn Taylor and Lindsey, five girls with a passion for telling their fans about Christ through their music. Their first single, “While We’re Young,” can be heard on radio stations across the country and their self-titled debut album is available now!

Format:  self-titled debut album (10 songs) is available in CD and MP3 format

Primary Audience: preteens, teens, and young adults (as well as parents, too!)

List Price:  CD w/ Autographed Booklet available at http://www.1girlnation.com/shop for $9.99; available on iTunes for $7.99 for a limited time!

Esmé’s Review

Esmé was excited about doing a video review on this.  Unfortunately, her mama is not a talented videographer – so this was a tough assignment for my limited skills and time.  You would make this 6yo’s day if you’d have a watch and leave a comment!

Mom’s Review

Yes, this music is catchy.  I love listening to the variety of upbeat songs along with my daughter.  These girls are cool.  My kid would be one of their biggest groupies if she could.

Mostly, I love the messages Esmé is getting from the songs.  There’s not a one I don’t like.  One after another, they inspire her to live for Jesus, stand on her knees, love like crazy.  And they deliver the message all girls want to hear:  “You are beautiful in the eyes of the One Who made you.”

In summary, I think 1 Girl Nation would make an awesome gift for the fun-loving girls in your life, inspiring them to “live for Jesus while [they’re'] young!”  And what better message, what better gift, is there than that?

And now, we have a giveaway copy of this CD to offer to one of you!  US or Canada addresses only on this one.

Review/Giveaway: The Sparkle Box

The other day, my sparkly little 6yo Miss Esmé called to me from the kitchen, asking me all the steps for making a cup of coffee with our Keurig.  Soon she headed back towards me, the best cup of (slightly watery) coffee ever carefully balanced in her hands – made just for me.

Not too much later, a slip of paper covered in 6yo handwriting was deposited into a sparkly silver box:  “Made coffee for elders.”

“Elders?”  I guess I’m okay with that.

Just one example of The Sparkle Box come to life in our house…The Sparkle Box

Synopsis
Here is the touching story of a young boy who unknowingly participates in a powerful new Christmas tradition: honoring Jesus on His birthday by giving to others.
Sam is so excited about Christmas! He's thinking about his Christmas list, looking forward to holiday parties, and puzzling over one very mysterious gift: a sparkly box sitting on the mantel. In the midst of the festivities, Sam and his family participate in various acts of kindness to others. On Christmas morning, when Sam finally opens the Sparkle Box, he finds only slips of paper that record the family's good deeds. Sam's mom explains that the things that they've been doing are, in fact, a gift for Jesus, for Jesus said that whatever we do for those in need, we do for Him.
About the Author
Author Jill Hardie and her family began placing a gift for Jesus under their Christmas tree as a way of bringing more meaning to the holiday.  The first time they opened His gift, the commercialism of the season melted away and they felt a profound joy and peace.  Jill hopes that The Sparkle Box will spark a new Christmas tradition, bringing light into thousands of lives.

Mom’s Review
I got a cup of coffee out of this – what’s not to love?!

This is an easy read-aloud, with a little sparkle and gorgeous colorful illustrations that fit the story and the season.  The colors are gender-neutral; the sparkle appeals to this little girl, while the story-line is about a boy.  Esmé really enjoyed it.

And while the reading is fun, the inspired activities extend the book far beyond the pages.  There are practical ideas included in the storyline, and even more ideas on the book's webpage.  Be sure to take a look at www.thesparklebox.com for gift ideas for Jesus, as well as activities and materials you can print out and use for free.

I have a class of 4-6yos at church, and I’m always looking for a way to “take the lesson home;” some application that a child can use during the week.  This book fits the bill perfectly.  Parents, expect a sparkle box coming your way this season!

Mostly, I love how this book applies the magic and sparkle of the season to bring out the spirit of generosity.  And draws the point that anything done for others is a gift for Jesus Himself.

And now, we have a giveaway copy of this amazing book for you to kick off this season of giving!  US or Canada addresses only on this one.

Review/Giveaway: Rufus and Ryan Go to Church!

When Esmé was younger, church was always a stressful time.  Even on her best behavior, she had no idea how loud her voice might come out, or she would accidentally drop items onto the floor with a loud clang.  She loved crawling under chairs or pews, bumping into other people’s feet.

Oh, *Esmé* loved church!  It was her mamma who got tired of whispering “No!”, “Shhhh!”, or trying to peel her off the floor and mold her wiggly body into a hard seat.  Who wanted to just turn the other way and pretend she had no association with the child. Who wanted a little girl to associate the Sabbath with the word “Yes!” instead of “No!”

So I was happy to review the children’s book, Rufus and Ryan Go to Church!  And grateful that it took a realistic snapshot of childhood, with a little boy who isn’t always perfectly still and perfectly quiet, but who enjoys sharing the church experience with his monkey companion.

Here’s Miss Esmé with her own monkey companion, Mr. George, pairing up with Rufus and Ryan…Rufus and Ryan

Synopsisimage

In Rufus and Ryan Go to Church!, four-year-old Ryan explains to his stuffed monkey, Rufus, what is happening as they attend church on Sunday morning. He lets Rufus know when it’s time to sing and to pray and to be quiet. Author Kathleen Bostrom brings a delightfully light touch to the text as she provides an introduction to an experience that most children are exposed to long before they understand why. And children everywhere will relate to the idea of explaining their surroundings to their favorite companions as they go about their daily activities.

This is just one of the first titles in a new series of inspirational books for preschoolers.

Series Synopsis

Rufus and Ryan is a new series of books for preschoolers, featuring Ryan, an energetic little boy, and his stuffed monkey Rufus. Basic Christian and church concepts serve as the foundation of the series, with an additional focus on character traits and development. The text is presented in young Ryan’s voice as he teaches Rufus about the concepts he is learning himself. Each story is about 150 words, using age-appropriate vocabulary and themes.

Mom’s Review

This is a sweet book to introduce or tie in to a little one’s church experience!  It goes through many of the typical steps of a church service, but having Rufus along for each step of the way keeps it from being a dry, factual book.  The softly colorful illustrations tie perfectly with the text.

This is a book that will appeal to the littlest of ages.  In my experience, I’d probably rank it for ages 1-4.  The board book format is perfect for chubby little hands to hold, and the quantity of words on each page is about the right amount amount to keep a little one’s attention.  It could also work as an easy reader – particularly for a beginning reader to engage with a little sibling.

Church services aren’t always known for their family-friendliness.  I’ve spent many hours in a “mothers’ room” dealing with my miniature miscreant, and I love the positive tone of the book – which shows Ryan in the sanctuary along with his family rather than being entertained elsewhere.

There are a number of Sabbath-keepers following this blog, so I feel obliged to mention that “Sunday” is referred to as “church day” in this book.  It is easy enough to substitute if you’re reading to a non-reader, of course.

And now, we have a giveaway copy to offer to one of you!  US or Canada addresses only on this one.

---------------

TOP TEN TIPS FOR INTRODUCING YOUR CHILD TO WORSHIP

1. Attend a child-friendly church.

A church that invites children to attend worship, that has a children’s time during worship or a service in which children are included, will not mind the noise and commotion that comes with having young children in worship.

2. Bring your child to church on a day other than Sabbath morning.

Call the church office and make an appointment with a pastor, Christian education director, or church school teacher. Go on a tour of the church facility, and locate the Sabbath school rooms and bathrooms as well as the sanctuary. Let your child explore the sanctuary, see how it feels to sit in the pew, and leaf through the Bibles and hymnbooks. Look behind the pulpit, Communion table, and baptismal font, and explain the use of these.

3. Take home a worship bulletin and go through the service at home.

Show your child that there are times to sit, to stand (and in some places, to kneel), to sing, to pray, and to listen. If the Lord’s Prayer is used, write down the words and let your child practice at home. Prepare offering envelopes and let your child put money in the envelope, and explain why the offering is important.

4. Play “Let’s go to church” at home.

Practicing the worship service at home will help your child feel more comfortable with what happens in worship.

5. Read the Bible and pray at home.

Purchase an age-appropriate Bible for your child and read the stories. Let your child handle the Bible and encourage questions. You can explain that the Bible is where we learn God’s story, and how we are part of that story. If you let prayer be a part of your everyday life, not just something you do at church, your child will understand its importance.

6. Sit near an aisle or in a place where you can make an exit if needed.

If your child needs to go to the bathroom, or is feeling overly stimulated or having a disruptive day, don’t be embarrassed. Walk your child out of the sanctuary until she can work off a little energy, and then come back in. This is much easier if you don’t have to crawl across a row of other people in the pew!

7. Be prepared with a worship notebook or bag.

Many churches provide materials for children to use during worship, but if not, bring your own supplies. Colored pencils can be used to mark the parts of worship in the bulletin as you go through them one by one. Get to church a few minutes in advance and use a bookmark to mark the hymns that will be sung that day. Have some coloring pages from a Bible coloring book for your child to color, or some blank pages for doodling. This is not disrespectful, and can help your child listen more attentively. Have the words of the Lord’s Prayer printed on a page for the child to follow, if he or she is of reading age. Let your child draw a picture of the anthem or hymns being sung, or the sermon, and give this to the choir director or pastor afterwards.

8. Teach basic church etiquette.

Speak to people before and after worship, and teach your child how to shake hands and greet others. If your child is shy, don’t force it, but practice at home and let your child see you greeting others. Let the child put the hymnbook and Bible away after use, and be sure to take your bulletin with you, rather than leaving it in the pew. Meeting other people and taking care of the church facility helps a child feel that “This is my church!”

9. Get to know the pastor.

Pastors of child-friendly churches love to get to know the children of the church. Introduce your child to the pastor after worship, and participate in other church activities so that the pastor becomes a friend and not a scary adult.

10. Don’t give up!

It may take awhile for your child to become comfortable in worship, and to learn how to sit quietly. The best way for this to happen is to attend worship on a regular basis. There may be days when it doesn’t go well, but don’t let this stop you from coming the following week. Practice makes perfect!
