So, 6yo Miss Esmé was doing her AR reading homework tonight, a book called Dolphin Tale, and next thing I know, she’s followed a website link at the back of the book and is watching all kinds of video documentaries on Winter the dolphin, figuring out how tails are made so she can make a mermaid tail of her own as soon as she’s saved up $300.
Thanks to her typing skills (thanks, Dance Mat) and love of all things video, she’s navigating online pretty well these days. The other day, she was watching a bunch of homemade Barbie dramatizations on YouTube, and next thing I know, she’s watching a violent crime scene reenacted by Ken and Barbie, complete with ketchup? blood. Ingenious, I admit, but not something I really wanted her to see.
When she’s not on her laptop, she’s often messing around with my iPod or her daddy’s iPhone. And the little preschool apps we started her off with aren’t keeping her interest anymore.
Which makes me very interested in iParent.TV. Even though she’s not unsupervised while online, we’re often otherwise occupied. I’m not about to remove her laptop, because I love the role technology plays in her education. She has access to so many tools and tidbits right at her fingertips.
