one year, and counting...

One wonderful, eventful, wild year since our wedding day.
I don't think the couple in this photo could ever have imagined how much they would experience, change and grow together in just 365 more.
This couple, tanned and newly expecting on the {honeymoon} trip of a lifetime, had just begun to realize all of the amazing things their new marriage would have in store.
And these two people were thrilled to learn just how quickly their love could expand to envelope a third little person, changing from couple to family in an instant.
Happy 1st Anniversary to the love of my life and best friend. Here's to dozens more wild and wonderful years together!

wedding re-cap part 2: bridal portraits...

In the hotel suite... I absolutely loved my bouquet - green, green and more green with just a hint of white and sparkle:
In the hotel lobby, just before walking out the door to the church...
At our venue...
I remember looking up at my brand-new husband here and love that this moment was captured:

wedding re-cap part 1: getting ready...

Getting ready in the suite at our hotel, after returning from the hair salon. The girls and I were just down the hall from my groom and his guys:

Make-up by Christine. She was so cool under all of the flash bulbs... My sister brought in gifts and an amazing letter from my wonderfully romantic groom. I think this was her first glimpse of me with my make-up finished and looking much more like a bride:After the tears of joy over his love letter, I opened some sparkles...
Getting zipped into a 20 pound dress is NOT a one person job:
My two oldest godchildren (twins) were flower girl and junior usher. They were SO excited to be a part of the wedding and did incredibly well the whole day:
My garter, earrings and bracelet were all afterthoughts - half of my bridals were taken without them! Luckily, I remembered just before we had to walk out the door to get to the church on time...
Grandma - I was so thrilled that she could be with me:
The beautiful ladies...
Dad, Sister (and MOH), Mom and one completely adorable and petulant nephew:

There was so much love and laughter (and so many photographers!) in that suite amid the bustle of activity. I don't recall any moments of stress and the time seemed to just float by. There is a vague memory of Chris, our lead photographer, telling me it was time to get in my dress. Yeah. I HAD typed up a well-organized timeline so that we could all be on time. Too bad I never printed it out! In the end, we were right on schedule and arrived to the church with several minutes to spare.

how to sum up the most perfect day...

Our wedding was incredible.

I've taken a while to post my thoughts because I still can't quite wrap my head around it - and the fact that it's done. The weather was beautiful. A perfect, clear day bookended by monsoon rains (for our rehearsal) and a blizzard (the night after the wedding). Mother Nature was good to us.

Booking a suite at the hotel to get ready proved to be a very smart idea. We needed the room with 3 photographers, 1 videographer (can you say paparazzi???), 1 make-up artist, myself, my mom, 4 bridesmaids and the 3 kids in the wedding - plus various family and guests coming in and out. In one room. Thankfully, with space to spare! A complete whirlwind and so much fun!

Just before I needed to get dressed, my sister delivered two wrapped packages and an envelope from my husband-to-be. While I love the gorgeous diamond earrings and pendant he chose, the real gift was a beautifully written letter. It was a love letter like none I had ever read before and I couldn't hold back the tears. I have that letter in a very special place and it's something I'll keep and treasure always.

I was calm all morning. Every moment until the highway exit sign for the church was in sight. Then came the butterflies. Sitting there surrounded by my favorite women and my Dad, I don't know why that particular moment made it so real. Walking into the church went smoothly. FI was in a room at the back of the altar, and I was to wait in a room at the back of the church. That wait was endless. Being so ready to walk down the aisle and then having to wait was close to torture. But the moment I saw him walk out on the altar (through the one-way mirror), that was the defining moment of the day. I've never felt luckier or more sure of anything as I was at that second.

The church service was as touching as had been described to me. Steeped in long-standing tradition and delivered in both English and Greek, I felt blessed to be a part of such a ritual. I arrived at the church right on time. Our guests however, did not, so the service started 25 minutes late. Still, we managed to stay right on schedule the rest of the day.

Arriving at our reception site, we were greeted in the parking lot by our own personal entourage. They congratulated, welcomed and ushered us right up to the bridal suite. DH and I didn't want for a thing all night. When we surprised our guests by showing up for the last half of the cocktail hour, we were greeted with a round of warm applause and tried to grab a few bites of the food we had been planning for so long (all fabulous!!!).

On a piece of advice from a fellow knottie, DH and I took a few moments to go into the reception room to see it fully set-up and untouched. That first moment of seeing our vision and hard work all put together was indescribeable. We walked around that room, holding on to each other looking at the menus, the centerpieces, the cake and cardbox...all those little things that made that ballroom ours for just a few amazing hours.

Then, we were announced in and we danced, and danced, and danced some more. I doubt anyone would have guessed that we were the couple who had never danced together in their relationship until the night, one month before the wedding, when we chose our first dance song. We remembered the practiced steps to our first dance to "When You Say Nothing At All." I led the first Greek circle dance, he led the second. We soaked up every. single. moment. We visited with everyone, laughed and cried and ate (a little).

If I could do it over the exact same way, I would do it 100 times over.

It was perfect.

He is wonderful.

We are married!

grand entrance...

"And now, for the very first time, give it up for the brand new Mr. and Mrs. B!!!!!"

The plan was to be announced into our reception and dance on in together to Nothin' but a Good Time by Poison but, our BP wanted to do the arch for us. After seeing these pics, I'm happy they did...

(have I mentioned how much I LOVED my green bouquet?)

Writing out thank you cards to the bridal party.
Checking and double checking packing lists.
Putting last minute touches on gifts.
Listening to FI speak to his mom about a small tux alteration.
Thinking I'll be calling him "DH" by tomorrow (whoa! and yay!)
About to shower and get dressed for the last time in our home as a fiancee.
Soon off to pick up the RD cake.
Nail polish change at 1 pm.
Bringing my dress to the hotel to check in as a single girl, with one day to go.
Thinking of the church run though and order.
Looking forward to the RD.
Excited.
Estatic.
Ready.

Tomorrow!!!

three rhymes with squeeee!!!!

Yesterday I finished work until a week after the wedding so, today was the official start of the wedding marathon and I've been running slow and steady. I slept in just a bit, did some laundry and finished up a few DIY projects before I headed out to run my errands. And, here's the last of the projects and stuff...

Table numbers with a different love quote on each. I made these double sided so the numbers can be seen from either direction. So happy with the results:
Silver clutch - matches my reception shoes perfectly:
Sign for the guest "book" table (signature mat):
Our completed card box:
Top of the box:
And, the front:Cocktail menu for the bar - thanks to knottie kwynn for the fabulous inspiration:
Our completed chocolate favor boxes. Each guest will receive one on their plate:
Our next task (by far one of our largest) is packing up everything we need for the reception to bring to the hall....tomorrow at 2:00 pm! A daunting task but, I'm so excited to get it all out of the house and into the capable hands of our Maitre'D and Bridal Attendant. One step closer to seeing all of the work and effort realized!
THREE DAYS!!!

2.24.2009

one, two, three, FOUR...

Four days to go.

I woke up at 3:30 this morning with happy butterflies and couldn't get back to sleep. Way too excited. Everyone keeps asking if I'm nervous. Not a bit. I'm more sure of this marriage than anything I've done before and am sure that our wedding day will be beautiful. I'm just excited and ready to roll!

I've been keeping a close eye on the extended forecast and, although Mother Nature thinks it will be funny to rain for our rehearsal, our wedding day is looking like this so far...

single digits...

Us. Nearly eleven months ago and just moments after FI proposed during that beautiful late March sunset. Within days we had decided to plan our wedding in less than a year but, even that amount of time seemed endless. Now, here we are with nine days to go until we are married couple.

Another 2/28 bride (kwynn) posted her proposal story on her blog this week and I thought it would be a sweet idea to follow suit so, here goes:

Elias and I traveled upstate to spend Easter weekend with my family. We had talked about a timeline for engagement for months and I knew it was coming in the next few weeks but, knew he wouldn't do it on a holiday. A proposal that weekend was the farthest thing from my mind. We had a nice weekend with my family. On Saturday, my grandmother was visiting my parent's house for the day and while my mom was preparing dinner, my sister and I went out to the grocery store to buy ingredients to bake brownies for dessert. As it turned out, this was a ploy to get me out of the house so that Elias could ask my parents and grandma for their blessing to propose.

The next morning was busy, taking Easter portraits of my nephew and then heading out for brunch at a restaurant with my large family. Elias later told me that my grandma almost ruined the surprise by leaning over during brunch and asking him, "So, when are you going to ask her?" After the meal and saying our good-byes, Elias and I got in my car for the two and a half hour drive back home. When we finally pulled in to our complex, he suggested that we get changed and go down to the park on the water, just a few blocks from our house, to watch the sunset and enjoy the rest of the day (it was unseasonably warm that day). He quickly changed and off we went.

At the park, we sat on a bench facing the water and bridge and talked about the weekend. He was flipping though a folder of grad school brochures and telling me that he would like to pursue a second Master's. Then, he said, "Oh, I just found your Easter card in here. Close your eyes because I did something cute with it." I did and, when he asked me to open my eyes, he was down on one knee holding the ring box in one hand and a scrapbook page the read "Will you marry me?" in the other. He said what I'm sure were some very sweet things that I was unable to comprehend and asked me to marry him.

I cried. I said "yes." I took the scrapbook page and pored over it until he said, "Don't you like the ring?" YES, yes, it was (and is) breathtaking and I just couldn't wrap my mind around everything at once. He put it on my finger and well, here we are today...

NINE days from our wedding.

NINE days until the day we have planning and designed and saved for becomes a reality.

Just a few details remaining:
  • Print escort cards and table numbers - DONE!
  • Add a couple of e-pics to our card box and attach security hinges to the front
  • Assemble bathroom baskets (already have all supplies) - DONE!

heading down the aisle...

I decided against one (yet another DIY project).
I thought I wanted one.
Our priest told us we needed one.
I ordered one...in October.
I was thrilled when it came and I thought about painting it.
I thought about it some more.
FI plotted our monogram...in December.
We knew if we didn't do it soon, plain white would just have to do.
We traced out the design...in January.
This weekend we committed to (finally) starting it.

He painted half.
I painted half.
And, together, we finished it!
A couple of hours on a Valentine's Saturday night, exactly two weeks until our wedding.
2 weeks.
Two weeks!
TWO WEEKS!!!!

2.12.2009

details, details...

This week I finally had a minute to take photos of some of our completed DIY projects. Although it was a lot of work doing these things ourselves, it was also very rewarding to see it all come together. I'm hoping these little touches will make our ceremony and reception very personal.

Our cake topper - ordered from Crafty Eddy and "blinged" by FI:
Our completed programs:
Ring pillow. I saw a similar pillow on a wedding blog post months ago and knew I had to have one. I found the material online, purchased all of the supplies and FMIL generously offered her time and impeccable sewing skills to come up with the final product. Just need to add a white ribbon under the button to tie the rings. L.O.V.E:Our dinner menus, one per place setting. Our venue does table side ordering with a choice of three entrees. To help our guests make their meal choices I thought these would be a nice touch. They were printed on our home inkjet printer on heavy, textured cardstock:
A closer look at our monogram on the menus: Flower girl's pomander. 3" styrofoam ball, many white and ivory silk carnations, heavy green Martha Stewart ribbon and a hot glue gun. Took about a half hour:
Bridesmaid gifts - Vera Bradley Purse Cosmetic, Small Bow Cosmetic and Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries. One other thing will accompany their gifts but, I'm keeping it under wraps in case my MOH peeks in (I'm giving her one, too):
And, not DIY at all but, after a long, long search for green reception shoes that were not meant to be, I ordered these silver ballet flats. Cute, comfy and I'll be able to wear them again:
CHECKS:
  • Seating chart is DONE!!!
  • Final count has been called in to our reception venue
  • We had our final meeting with the DJ on Wednesday night and got our music squared away
  • Photog/Video appointment is tomorrow morning

Then, other than a few little details (aisle runner, bathroom baskets, OOT bags, escort cards), we're done!
