Bedside Table Make-Over
I have been eye-ballin' my mis-matched bedside tables for a few months now, not sure what to do with them. My BFF, Michelle at From House to Home, suggested that I paint the pieces so they would seem to 'go' together better.
When Glidden did their free quart of paint give away the other week, I knew just what I was going to use my paint for. I got a really pretty color, Tropical Surf, and went to town on my tables.
One table is solid wood and the other is a veneer. Let me just say...the wood was a lot easier to paint!
Have I mentioned that I've never painted any furniture before? This is was all new to me and I learned several things.
1) Don't stand down stroke from myself when I'm painting or I'll paint myself with splatter as much as I paint the piece I'm working on
2) Painting outside in Texas with the kids and the dogs running around is a recipe for disaster. Dog hairs, bugs, dirt and children were all stuck in the paint at one time or another.
3) Use more newspaper under the object of painting...refer back to #1 for details on how messy I am.
On to the reveal!!!!
Before of pieces #1 & #2:
And after #1:
After #2:
Now, let me show you how veneer sucks. I had to paint about 3 coats of paint on the piece before the paint would stop beading up. I sanded it, but perhaps I didn't sand enough. In the end, it did stick and it did go on evenly, but it took a little doing.
Go me! This was fun, I'll have to see what else I can paint around here. :)
Here's a peek at my next project. I would love to hear your wonderful ideas for this wicker chair. I am thinking of spray painting it and recovering the cushion. What color and what fabric are totally undecided!
I'm nearly done with my immediate plans for redecorating in my master bedroom and living room, stay tuned while I finish up my last few details. :) Thanks for stopping in today.

Looks really good to me! I love painting ,I have items that have been every color in the rainbow!!
Just remember primer is needed on some woods to make the paint stick better.:)k
The tables look wonderful!
I like un-matched bedside tables (that's what I have and prefer). The white brings unity. Also, wicker could be cute black or white, but how about black with a toile cushion? Linda
The tables look gorgeous. Isn't it amazing what a little paint does. It totally updates and transforms almost anything. I love creamy white wicker, then I would do the cushion in a fabric to coordinate with the bedding. Great chair. Hugs, Marty
Painting them to match was the right thing to do. It makes them appear to match. Kind of like an optical illusion. They turned out perfectly!
Can't wait to see the chair. :)

What a great idea....they both look great.
I requested a deep purple for my free can of paint- now what am I going to do with that?!?!?
Your tables look just great. I understand the painting issues you were having. I've painted so many pieces of furniture and I struggle every time. Painting is not easy but your finished product made it all worthwhile... right?
The tables look great. You should be able to find all sorts of creative combinations for the wicker chair. I would fall in love with a fabric first and then pick an color to compliment that.
Hi Sarah, I had to come over here and tell you Hello and thank you for your funny comment over at Martys blog, I laughed out loud! Great job on the night stands. Hugs Kathysue
Great job on the end tables. Looks like the paint worked out perfectly!
Love the tables, now they match better !
What a great chair....What room will it occupy ? Do you have a color scheme yet....too many questions before I could give my 2 cents...whatever you choose I bet it will be fab !
Hugs ~ Kammy
Veneer is tough, but it looks like you won the battle!
Good luck with your chair decisions!
Your perseverance obviously paid off! Nice transformations :).
Great job on your first painting experience! The tables look great, and I like that they don't match. Next time you paint veneer, just use a primer on it, like KILZ, and the paint will stick just perfectly. It even comes in a spray can!
I love to paint furniture. It's fun to watch the transformation.
The wicker chair is a cutie. For my house, I would spray paint it black and do toile cushions. But you may have different decor. I'll have to check out your blog some more!
Again, great job!

The tables look great! I think they came out awesome! Loving that color, it looks great in your bedroom.
Great job on the tables, Sarah! They look marvelous! I can't wait to see what you do to the wicker chair, now that you are an expert...Christine
I'm so glad you visited me.
The nightstands look great painted.
I still haven't gotten my free paint yet.
Rhonda
Thanks for the visit.
Your nightstands do look better with their new paint.
I am still waiting for my free paint.
Rhonda
They look so good! Well done!
I'm scared of painting - don't know why. It intimidates me.
Hey, if you're not too shy about it, I've gone and added you to my Honest Scrapper post - I'd love it if you did a list!
The tables look great! Way in the back of my mind, I seem to remember Christopher Lowell talking about a product that would paint over laminates without beading. The name of the product escapes me, but, I saw "counter top" paint in Lowes the other day. I wonder if this would work better than regular paint.
Great job! Your pieces turned out really nice.

Great job with your tables, they turned out great! Can't wait to see what you do with the chair.
Great job on your new side tables, I love paint. As for the chair, I'd go with spray paint, but do keep in mind that you will need several cans, like, at least 3 for this project. Don't want you to run out mid project :) Those kind of chairs look good in any color, where are you putting it? I'd do a blueish gray for the bedroom with a pretty white patterened fabric on the cushion.
For the living room, I saw that you are thinking of painting and brightening it up. I'd go for a pretty warm creamy color on the walls. Your chair would be nice painted white, shabbied up, and then a punchy color on the cushion, one that coordinates with the rest of the room.
Good luck and I'm sure it will turn out awesome!
Love your table redos and love the colors! I too got some free paint! Woohoo, I was so excited and could not believe how big the sample was! My gramma and aunt also ordered some and gave it to me, so I was even more excited! Love that chair, it will look awesome painted and recovered! I want a chair like that, love the look of them! Thanks for stoppin by and lookin at my finds! Your awesome!
I adore the color that you chose. Fantastic makeover project! Thanks for dropping by my little corner of Texas. Blessings to you!
Looks good!! I didn't get my free paint as I procrastinated. And I can't give you any help on what color to paint the wicker chair as I am too indecisive as well. I'm really handicapped. It's a wonder I ever get anything accomplished at my house.
Great job. Can't wait to see the chair.
Have a great week.
Sherry
You did a great job-even though you painted yourself and you now match your bedroom night stands.

Hi, and thanks for stopping by my blog! I think I will keep trying to find a good white to paint my furniture, it will look best with the grey, but seeing that lovely sea-foam color you used on your nightstands (which look so fresh!) makes me think, "Hmm... maybe a pastel purple or blue...." It's always so hard to just DECIDE! Ha ha!

They look great! I just got my free can of paint today (well, I should say my hubby did... my free can of paint should be waiting for me at work). Great job!
Love the makeovers :) Hooray for free paint!
I just added this web site to my feed reader, great stuff. Can not get enough!
