finishing orange

I had to finish the oranges for sugar grove or I would fall way behind, it would only take 1 month to do that.

1s, 2s, 3s

I was able to complete 5 more complete sets of blocks and add a few more to complete sets. The baggies are still full waiting for another color.

I finished the last of the orange hen and chicks blocks.

And I made only one traffic jam block in orange and decided to move on to dark.

I didn't make any ripple blocks in orange.. yet

orange blocks

I worked on the hen and chicks this week in orange for the rainbow scrap challenge. I made three sets but didn't get to the 4th. Some of the pieces for the minis were smaller than my thumb LOL. I hope to still catch up with the rest of my orange scraps soon. I am already making plans for next year How about you? If you could see my 2 1/2 inch strip bag in blue, you could guess that will be a priority next year.

Today is my 50th wedding anniversary. It doesn't seem that long, but, I also don't believe I was ever that young either.

orange scraps

I have been working on my hsts for sugar grove and the rainbow scrap challenge. This month's color is orange and I definitely want orange in the quilt. I cut and made 7 sets of 5 and 14 sets of 4. I have this month's goal of 4 patches for the baby 30s quilt made.

orange scraps

My focus this week for the rainbow scrap challenge. was  Jo's checkers . I sewed the white 2 1/2 inch square to each of my 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles for the 2 rows I wanted to make in orange. I have 3 more rows to make for this quilt this year.

I made 2 rows with 15 sets in each.

When I cleaned up around my sewing machine, I found 4 matching 4 1/2 inch squares in aqua. I thought I had made all the traffic jam blocks last month. nope Luckily, I had the very rare urge to clean more thoroughly. haha

I have reached a little health bump in the road and I am not sure what it will mean, yet.

a start of aqua

Aqua is the monthly color for the rainbow scrap challenge. I didn't have that many in the drawer of 2 1/2 inch strips. But, I dug through them all, pulling out the smaller pieces and cutting for my projects.

For my baby 30s quilt, I have all the blocks done and plan on working on the 4 patches for the sashing. I sewed them all in twosies ( print and background) and cut them all. I did the math and need to sew at least 32 each month to finish at the end of the year.

I dug through my orphan triangles and found enough for the sets of 5 I need each month for sugar grove. They are sewn and pressed. I will need to cut more in aqua for for the rest of the 180 I need each month.

I found 56 wof strips for a homemade jelly roll. The next pile were the good sized pieces that I will fill a new drawer for next time and the bottom pile are all the smaller sizes I will use to cut triangles for sugar grove and monkey wrench.

I cut for windmill, windmill, jos checkers, and stashbuster.

I did have a few extras as leader/ enders

finishing with blue scraps

I have my blue projects for June done a little early. But, I might still play a little with blue bits and pieces. I have spent some time cleaning out my son's old room and planning some quilting areas in the room. I am dreaming of having room for storing all my quilts I want to still keep. They are playing all over the house, making a mess. They may not want to give up their freedom and be confined to a small closet.

I made 2 traffic jam blocks

so fun

I made 3 more ripple blocks

inch by inch

and 2 more sugar grove blocks

step by step

there is progress

strip weave finish

Strip weave was my 2023 year's rainbow scrap challenge. I finished the missing blocks this year and assembled it. I made this from home made jelly roll strips. I was trying to reduce my drawer of 2 1/2 inch strips which magically renews itself every time I try. This year I have 4 -2 1/2 inch projects I am working on for the rainbow scrap challenge. Maybe, I will make some more progress emptying the drawer. I cut the 2 1/2 inch strip into10 1/2 inch strips for strip tease. Pretty quick and easy. I made 2 per month and had a donation quilt finish.

58 x 68 = 15 yards

I had a wonderful vintage sheet I could use for the backing and a scrappy binding.

blue scraps week 2

I started culling through my 2 1/2 inch blue drawer for the rainbow scrap challenge. I cut for Jos checkers and  made 2 rows, one in dark blue, one in light and medium blues. I still need 4 more colors and 7 more rows.

I sewed a pink and blue row together

And a pink and yellow row together

I made 3 zig zag ripple blocks, but I have cut for 8.

starting with blue scraps

I started the blue month for the rainbow scrap challenge by pulling through my hsts drawer looking for blue ones to make the sugar grove blocks. I had a nice assortment and I was able to get the sets of 5 all finished. I will have to cut for sets of 4 and 3s.

I made the blue shoofly blocks for my baby 30s quilt.  And I discovered there was a pink one for last month that I didn't remember. But now all the blocks are done for the quilt and I can start putting the quilt together. The sashing is a multi color length of 4 patches. I have the strips sewn together and need to subcut and sew to size.

I have a few more monkey wrench blocks made. I have 98 of them.

pink scraps again

All the hsts for sugar grove are done for pink and the rainbow scrap challenge. I actually had almost all I needed already cut as extras in my hsts drawer. I just needed to make them in sets for the number I needed in pink.

4 and 5s

3s
I was able to set up 6 blocks for sewing by adding the new pink color.

I finished the hen and chicks blocks from so scrappy. I am not sure my fingers are nimble enough to enjoy the minis any more.

And with May my pink peonies are being showy in time for pink month. We have had this bush for as long as we have been married - 50 years this year. It always delights.

pink scraps round 2

I enjoy making these traffic jam blocks. Maybe, because, I am seeing a reduction in my 2 1/2 inch square drawer, or because I am only making 2 each month. I am hoping by the end of the year I will have a small donation quilt.

I made pink zigzag ripple blocks  using 1 1/2 inch strips by the wof. I am trying to keep the fabric the same in each block. I wonder what a mixed scrap block would do in a quilt.

I brought my Grandmother's pink rose bush to my home over 50 years ago when she passed away. I was 12 at the time, I have moved it a few times, but it still makes me happy. I took this picture on mother's day after a rain.

strip weave top finish

The top for my strip weave quilt is ready for quilting. I have added it to the cue for the long arm. This was part of my rainbow scrap challenge  projects for last year. I made the blocks from scraps using the color of the month and 2 1/2 inch strips. I didn't have a pattern just a picture on my bulletin board. I had to redo some of them as I had edge strips going the wrong way.

starting pink scraps

I had a chance to start with my pink scraps for the rainbow scrap challenge. I made windmills.

and 2 rows of Jo's checkers. I have enough variety of colors now I may be able to sew a few rows together.

I have a used the yellow monkey wrench blocks from last month as leaders and enders.

finishing yellow scraps

I sure wasn't ready for May. Where did April go? I finished the yellow hen and chicks blocks for the  rainbow scrap challenge.

And I made yellow zigzag ripple blocks. I haven't dug out my pink 2 1/2 inch strips yet to start cutting for May.
