DIY Gift Ideas... {Farmhouse Inspired}

Hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving! Are you braving the crowds, or keeping it cozy at home this weekend? Today, I thought I'd share a roundup of some farmhouse-inspired DIY projects that would make great gifts.

These posts were written over the past few years. Though there is a range in the quality of photos, depending on when the post was written, I still enjoy the finished product and hope you will too!

DIY Book Page Runner

Ah, January. A fresh, clean slate.

Maybe almost too clean...

Does it feel like your house needs a little something?

A book page runner is a quick and easy DIY that brings texture and interest to any table.

Use it "just because" or for a special meal or party.
(And if it subtly suggests that you are smart and well-read, I see no harm in that. ;)

Fall {Last Year} at our Little Farmstead

Sometimes it's fun to take a little trip down memory lane. (Even if we're just talking one year ago!) Last fall, I had only been blogging for about six months and was on a steep learning curve. (Still am...)

I hope you find at least one of these ideas or images interesting. ;)

Refresh with Pillows {And An Easy Candle DIY}

Hi Friends! I hope you had a great weekend...

The other day, while my Mom and I were shopping for a vintage chandelier, I spotted two pillows that made me smile. You see, these pillows reminded me of the three young boys who have captured my heart and are growing way too fast!

It Was Free! {Re-Purposing A Yard Sale Find}

So, we were on our way to our son's football game last weekend, when my car (almost) automatically hung a right at a huge neighborhood sale sign. I knew we had about two and a half minutes to look, otherwise we'd risk being late to the game...

So I did the visual "sweep." (You know what I'm talking about.) That's when I spotted this outdoor fireplace on the curb with a sign that read, "Free." No sooner did my car come to a safe, screeching halt, and we were loading this bad boy (lovely lady?) up.

{A Sampling} 2014 DIY Projects

As 2014 wraps up, I just want to ThAnK YoU for being here!

Blogging is new to me this year... I started blogging in April. And, as is often the case when we're starting something new, I wasn't always sure whether or not this blogging thing would "take" or if I could fit it into our busy family schedule.

You, reading along, have encouraged me to continue. It's been a blessing for me to get to know bits of your stories. I'm so appreciative for this creative outlet in my life. To share the joy of "nesting" with you is a gift to me.

Thank you, friends.

Here are a few of the projects I enjoyed working on
this year, in the order they are shown above:

Charming (and easy!) Place Card Candles

I know, I know. The Dollar Tree candles again.

But here's a new little twist… by adding names to the candles,
they now make sweet place cards as well as provide beautiful candlelight.

We will be hosting our family Christmas Eve dinner tonight,
before attending our church's Christmas Eve Candlelight service.

This DIY project is pretty self-explanatory, based on the pictures.
I hot-glued vintage sheet music to the glass dollar candles. (If you don't have
sheet music on-hand, there are lots of great free sheet music printables online!)

I printed the names vertically on card stock paper.

I wanted an aged look. So, once the ink dried, I dipped the paper in coffee and let dry (just lay the coffee-dipped paper on parchment paper on your counter while it dries). This step is optional.

I then tore the names for a more rustic look and
hot-glued them to the sheet music-covered candles.

I finished the candles by adding a little sprig of evergreen and ribbon.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

Pumpkins, Candles and Company...

I enjoy using candles on the porch to welcome guests this time of year...

Usually by the time I'm lighting the candles, our boys are starting to look out the window for any sign of company coming down the driveway.

Last night, we were excited to have some dear friends,
who recently adopted two precious children from China, over for dinner.

We've had the joy of watching this sweet family grow to seven! We have witnessed many answers to prayer during their emotional and rewarding journey of adoption.

As our children and theirs lost themselves in balloon sword fights, costumes and laughter, we were reminded of God's blessings of children, family and friendship.

Have a blessed Sunday everyone!

Cable Knit Sweater Mason Jars

It's starting to get cool here and the rain has returned.

In fact, just yesterday, a rainfall record was set.
Keep in mind we live in the Seattle area… and we set a record for rainfall.

Today after school, two of our boys were playing "survivor" with our dog, out in the rain. I was in the kitchen when I noticed a flash of lightning and then one of the loudest thunder sounds I've ever heard! I raced out and called my heroic boys in.

As the thunder rolled and the lightning struck (ode to Garth Brooks),
we decided it was the truest game of survivor the boys had ever played!

Needless to say, we could use some "cozy" inside

I whipped these sweater-covered mason jars out in no time.

You can too! All you need is: mason jars (different sizes are nice),
a cable knit sweater (think thrift store), scissors, and a hot glue gun.

I purchased an off-white sweater (though I'm also keeping my eye open for a light gray one).

The sleeves and the collar are the easiest parts of the sweater to use, since they have finished edges. (Once you use those pieces, you can create a finished-looking edge by tucking the cut edge under and gluing in place, like a hem.

Simply wrap the sweater piece around your mason jar and glue closed (glue sweater to sweater, instead of gluing on jar since this is sometimes visible, especially towards the top of the jar). Or, slip the mason jar through the sleeve and cut off excess material. Stretch tight and glue to the under side of the mason jar.

For a more finished look, you can overlap the sweater material on the underside of the jar and glue connecting pieces of sweater so that the whole underside is covered.

For now, I filled mine with a candle and dried hydrangeas.

They'd also look beautiful filled with winter greenery for the holidays!
