qBittorrent 2.2.10 Released (Now Available For Windows Too!)

qbittorrent 2.2.10

qBittorrent is probably the most actively developed Linux Bittorrent client, with new versions being released constantly fixing lots of bugs but also adding nice features to make you forget uTorrent is coming to Linux. But actually qBittorrent is not just for Linux anymore: recently the Mac development started again and it is now also officially available for Windows too.

qBittorrent 2.2.10 was released today bringing lots of bug fixes so it's advisable to upgrade to the latest version. In Ubuntu, you can install qBittorrent using the following PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hydr0g3n/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install qbittorrent

For now 2.2.10 in the PPA is only available for Ubuntu Lucid, while for Karmic users the latest version in the PPA is 2.2.6.

For other Linux distributions, Windows and MacOS X, see the qBittorrent download page.

qBittorrent 2.2.0 Brings Some Interesting New Advanced Features

qbittorrent 2.2.0

qBittorrent is a multi-platform lightweight but fully featured BitTorrent client, very similar to uTorrent.

It features a µTorrent-like User Interface, torrent labels, WebUI, µTorrent spoofing to bypass private trackers whitelisting, advanced RSS support with download filters and many other really nice features.

qBittorrent 2.2.0 was released yesterday and it brings some cool new features for advanced users such as:

  • User can set alternative speed limits for fast toggling
  • Bandwidth scheduler (automatically use alternative speed limits for a given period)
  • Added "Added/Completed On" columns to transfer list
  • Added "Upload/Download limit" columns to transfer list
  • Torrent files can be exported to a given directory
  • Outgoing ports range can be customized (for QoS)
  • User can choose to apply transfer limits on LAN too
  • User can choose to include the protocol overhead in transfer limits
  • Torrents can be automatically rechecked on completion
  • If 2 torrents have the same hash, add new trackers/URL seeds to the existing torrent
  • Trackers can be added from Web UI
  • Global transfer information are displayed in the new Web UI status bar
  • Allow to change the priority of several files at once
  • Support for multiple scan folders
Also, a lot of bugs have been fixed since qBittorrent 2.1.0

Even though I used to be a fan of Deluge, I recently switched to qBittorrent due to some bugs Deluge has since it's early stages which torrent checking: every once in a while it starts re-checking all my torrents and when you're seeding ~100+ torrents that can get very annoying. I'm now only seeding 1-2 torrents so that might not matter so much anymore, but I like to know I won't be hit by that bug anymore. And qBittorrent also has a feature I always look for in a BitTorrent client: the ability to label torrents.

How to install qBittorrent in Ubuntu

-Ubuntu Karmic:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hydr0g3n/ppa

-Ubuntu Jaunty:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/hydr0g3n/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 47B4D1C4

Then for either Ubuntu Karmic or Jaunty, to install qBittorrent simply paste this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install qbittorrent

For other Linux distributions, Mac OS X and FreeBSD, see the qBittorrent download page.

qBittorrent 2.1.0 Released, Adds Labels And Headless Running [Linux]

Not so long ago, qBittorrent 2.0 was released and yesterday, the application very similar to uTorrent releases another version with lots of new features and improvements.

New features include categorizing/labeling to better organize big torrent lists (uTorrent style), headless running for people who want to run qBittorrent on a server without X server and control it remotely, new search engine plugins, better proxy support, a more secure and complete Web UI.

For a lot of people, the labels and headless running features are great news. I for one will install it on my headless Debian server in the following days to give it a try.

Another new feature which I really like and is very important for private torrent trackers is that qBittorrent can identify itself as uTorrent, Vuze or KTorrent (any stable version):

You can find the complete list of changes, HERE.

qBittorrent installation instructions can be found on our original post on qBittorrent.

qBittorrent: The Closest Open Source Equivalent To uTorrent [Linux, Mac OS X]

qbittorrent

qBittorrent is a multi-platform lightweight but fully featured BitTorrent client. It's authors claim it's the closest open source (GNU GPL v2 license) equivalent to µTorrent.

qBittorrent Features:

  • Polished µTorrent-like User Interface
  • Well-integrated and extensible Search Engine
    • Simultaneous search in most famous BitTorrent search sites
    • Per-category-specific search requests (e.g. Books, Music, Movies)
  • All Bittorrent extensions
    • DHT, Peer Exchange, Full encryption, Magnet URI, ...
  • Remote control through a Web user interface
    • Nearly identical to the regular UI, all in Ajax
  • Advanced control over trackers, peers and torrents
    • Torrents queueing and prioritizing
    • Torrent content selection and prioritizing
  • UPnP / NAT-PMP port forwarding support
  • Available in ~25 languages (Unicode support)
  • µTorrent spoofing to bypass private trackers whitelisting
  • Advanced RSS support with download filters (inc. regex)
  • IP Filtering (eMule and PeerGuardian compatible)

As you can see, qBittorrent has all the features you would need in a Bitorrent client.

I like it because usually I can only use a few Bittorrent clients on certain Torrent Trackers, but since qBittorrent has uTorrent spoofing to bypass private trackers, I can use any version without a problem:

Also, the RSS support is really easy to use so you can easily download new episodes of you favourite TV series.

qBittorrent v2.0.0 was released just two days ago and it includes a huge list of bug-fixes and new features - you can check the changes, HERE.

Install qBittorrent in Ubuntu

qBittorrent has a Launchpad PPA you can add:

-Ubuntu Jaunty:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/hydr0g3n/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 47B4D1C4

For both, to install qBittorrent:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install qbittorrent

If you don't use Ubuntu, see the qBittorrent download page (packages available for Mac OS X, Debian, Gentoo, openSUSE, Fedora, Alt Linux and blackPanther OS).
