Stats: the 5 year check - up

Keifer had her 5 year check-up with Dr. J. last week and all is looking well with her growth. She is currently coming in at the 93rd percentile for both height and weight:

Weight:  51.8 lbs
Height:  45.5 inches tall

I was quite happy to know she is a "big" girl for her age, but not completely off the charts!  I'm so used to the 100th %ile, that coming down a bit is great news! She is currently in a size 7/8 in shirts and dresses, and bottoms for her are anywhere from a size 6-7.  Her shoe size is around a 12.5 or 13 Wide.

My babe did very well with her hearing tests, and because we just had her eyes checked (with the FULL work-up) in January (with no issues, whatsoever), she is coming in as  "healthy child".  Of course, no check -up at 5 years would be complete without the Kindergarten shots. Ahh yes. The shots. My poor girl, she was so pumped up and completely READY for the shots: however,  once the needles came out, all 3 of them, she lost her marbles.
I had to drag her out of the corner, from under the sink and behind the garbage can, and then hold her on my lap, while she revved herself up into a complete tizzy.

"Please, Nurse Judy, please STOP, DON'T DO IT, Nurse Judy," she screamed.
Yeah, Mama Bear here had tears of my own.

She managed to handle the 3 shots, got her band aids on, and recuperated enough to pick out a sticker for both herself and her younger sister, who luckily wasn't with us. Whew. Glad that was over.

In other news, we were referred to a Pediatric Developmental Specialist for her anxiety. Yep, the anxiety and sleeping with mom-thing is getting kind of difficult, as usual.  However, after researching the place we were referred to, and then talking at length with a phenomenal co-worker of mine, I made my own executive decision to instead make an appointment with a NeuroPsychologist.   When I looked at the Pediatric place, it talked about more about the child's "behaviors".  I honestly KNOW that K1's "behaviors" are due to an underlying anxiety about things, that are out of her control. Things at our house at night are not due to BEHAVIOR, they are unwinding at night due to some chemical imbalance in her system or something.

Check out the following info on that:

What is Clinical Neuropsychology?
Clinical neuropsychology is focused on understanding the link between the brain and behavior. For example, how changes in the health of the brain may affect the ability to pay attention, remember, or solve problems. This understanding between how someone thinks and acts and how the brain works is used to diagnosis and treat brain disorders.
What is a Pediatric Neuropsychologist?
Pediatric neuropsychologists are licensed psychologists. They have training in both clinical psychology and neuropsychology. They have special training in how the brain develops. They use this training to evaluate and help manage children with brain disorders. Such disorders may involve brain injury, medical disease, or developmental problems. Pediatric neuropsychologists help parents, teachers, and physicians to:
Understand how problems with the brain may relate to problems seen at school, home, or with peers Understand how a child learns best Understand why a child may have behavior problems Help a child deal with thinking or behavior problems
Identify neurological or psychiatric problems Help match expectations to a child’s specific strengths and weaknesses Work with other doctors and teachers to develop the best treatment and school plan for a child
How do I know if my child needs a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation may help if your child has: A neurological disorder such as spina bifida, hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, epilepsy (seizures),
neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, or a brain tumor. A brain injury from a trauma to the head, stroke, lack of oxygen, or an infection. Other medical problems such as prematurity, diabetes, chronic heart or breathing problems, certain
genetic disorders, or treatment for childhood cancer Been exposed to lead, street drugs, or inhalants (carbon monoxide) Been exposed to alcohol, smoking, or certain drugs prior to birth. A developmental or school problem such as a learning disability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder,
or autism spectrum disorder/pervasive developmental disorder Had an evaluation by a psychologist or the school, but the treatment following that evaluation has not
helped. Your physician may recommend a neuropsychological assessment to:
Help make or confirm a diagnosis Get a record of your child’s functioning before treatment with medicine or surgery. Record a change in your child after a medical treatment (testing can be repeated to see if the treatment
changed your child’s functioning) Record your child’s development treatments and expectations can be adjusted to your child’s needs. What does a Neuropsychological Evaluation Involve?
A neuropsychological evaluation involves examining thinking, behavior, and social-emotional functioning. The evaluation uses standardized tests and procedures. Examiners work directly with your child. They also talk to you and teachers and other doctors. Tests may be performed using paper and pencil or on the computer. Your child will be asked many questions and to solve different types of problems.. Neuropsychological evaluations typically include tests that measure the following:
Intelligence (IQ) Problem solving Planning and organization Attention and memory Processing speed Language Academic skills Visual perception Control over hand movements Depression and anxiety Aggression and impulsive behavior Social skills
The neuropsychologist will also review your child’s medical and school records to help understand how the test results relate to daily life.
How does a neuropsychological evaluation differ from a school evaluation?
Pediatric neuropsychologists and school psychologists often use some of the same tests. However, school evaluations focus on deciding IF a child has a problem with academic skills such as reading, spelling, or math. Pediatric neuropsychologists focus on understanding WHY a child is having problems in school or at home. This is done by examining academic skills but also examining all of the thinking skills needed to perform well in and outside of school – skills like memory, attention, and problem-solving Understanding a child’s specific thinking strengths and weaknesses helps to better focus school plans and medical treatment and understand potential areas of future difficulty. Because neuropsychologists have training in clinical psychology, they are also able to diagnosis emotional problems like depression and anxiety.

I have highlighted IN RED - the issues that are relevant to my Keifer girl. As you know, if you've read my blog long enough, Keifer received a year of Sensory Integration Therapy. That has helped in many areas of her growth, but not in the area of anxiety like it could have. That is why we will be continuing to research for more HELP for her. She is a beautiful, loving, and amazing young girl, but I want to help her before she gets into the school system full-time, and may potentially have things arise that are out of her control.

So that is our 5 year old in a nutshell. Oh, how I love this amazing girl!

She's a 4 year old: Stats!

At her 4 year old check up on April 11, Keifer was (as always) in the higher range for a girl her age. She is measuring:
47 pounds -- 97%ile
42 1/4 inches tall -- 90%ile
She now wears a size 6x or 7 in shirts, and a size 5 or 6 in bottoms.
Her shoe size is 11 on one foot and 11 1/2 on the other. WIDE. The woman who helped us commented on how she has a "wide and thick" foot. (*Hey, it doesn't look too thick to me!*)
At Stride Rite the other day, they gave her a 12 for her sandals. My goodness, I have a large 4 year old. My BAB just keeps on growing! She's currently at the 95%ile for her BMI - and of course, the doc had to give me a handout on "healthy eating" because she's so high on the chart. Plus, she's jumped in height from even December, so she's growing at a fast rate.

She is a healthy and very active (VERY VERY active) 4 year old, who adores her sister and loves her friends and family very much!

Went to the doctor, and the doctor said.....

One more day. ONE MORE DAY and my first born baby is turning 3 years old. Three years have gone by since I gave birth. It makes me feel shock, awe, and sadness that she is growing up so fast. She is starting to lose the "baby" toddler look and is starting to resemble a big girl. Her face is losing it's chub, and her body is getting tall and lean. The buddha belly is falling away, the more she moves, dances, and runs.

We have the "big party" tomorrow - more to come on that fun event- but yesterday, we did her 3 year check up with Dr. J.

Keifer was very excited to see Dr. J., because she was aware that her check up was BECAUSE she is turning 3 years old. For months now, she's been able to tell us that "April 10" is her birthday, and she'll be 3 years old. With a Mickey Mouse cake. And a dancing party. At our church. With Miss Meghan (dance teacher). Hee hee.

Her stats were great for her age. She is no longer on the "baby "charts for development; now she's on the "big girl" charts *sniff sniff*. Dr J. and I discussed her eating habits (not good at home but awesome at Elaine's house, go figure), we discussed possibilities as to whether Keifer has night mares vs. night terrors, as she's up a lot crying and talking in the night. We talked about how she most likely has allergies. Her ears and throat and lungs were checked, as she had her second double ear infection last week and she had pneumonia in her right lung last week as well. Keifer didn't want anything to do with the eye/vision check- I think she was confused as to what the nurse expected from her and NO WAY was she going to put that 'patch' over her eye to see. She also had her blood pressure taken: the cuff gave her arm a hug, so it was cute to watch her have that done.

Overall, our girl resembles a typical, healthy 3 year old who is moving a long like she should. As always, her language skills were sky high for her age - as the girl has a vocabulary and sentence structures that would blow your mind.

Stats:
Weight: 38 1/2 lbs = 96%ile
Height: 39 1/2 inches = 93%ile

Although she is ONLY in the 93rd percentile for height (ha ha), she seems like a monster to me. She's as tall and as heavy as many of my friend's children who are 5, 6 or 7 years old! She is wearing size 6 in most tops, and size 4 or 5 in bottoms, and a size 10 or 10.5 in her shoes.

Dr. J checking out K1's lungs and breathing. It was so sweet to see her little body in a doctor's gown. She didn't really know what to think of that!

2 year stats/check up:

Keifer had her 2 year check up with Dr. J this AM (gotta love Saturday morning appointments!). She did great, and is advanced (no surprise) in her verbal and fine motor skills. Gross motor wise, there are still some issues but she'll be fine - such as always needing to go FAST, tripping (walks towards the ball of her foot more), and hesitancy with her riding toys. At least she can jump, and gallop and loves to dance (which I think is helping with those skills). When you're a big girl, it takes time to get that big ol' body under control, right? :)
Anyhoo, our girl is off the charts for her age - also not a big surprise. We always knew she was a BAB (big ass baby) but man oh man, no wonder the shirt in the above picture is a 4T and fits just perfectly!
Stats:
Weight: 35.4 lbs
Length: 37 inches
Head: 50 1/2 cm (no wonder 2-5T hats barely fit her melon!)
Things we'll be doing: switching from whole milk to regular milk (1% or 2% I'm sure), trying some Zyrtec, as our girl seems to have some awful allergies JUST like mama (which amazes me, as she's not 'genetically' mine), and continuing to work on the potty training. Our girl loves to try to go potty, but has recently decided she loves the flushing part of the potty training more. Hence, we have a child who will hop on the potty seat, sit for 2.2 seconds, jump off and flush. Dr. J warned us (as we know) that when baby Kyla comes, we'll be seeing some regression with Keifer in some areas, so potty training isn't AS important at this point as it will be in the future. Still, I'm happy our girl is interested in it!
The worst part of the visit was the end, when K had to get a shot in her leg - the 2nd part of her Hepatitis A vaccine. She screamed and cried, but luckily the cookie monster sticker took her mind off the owie. Mama always tears up during shots, too: I hate to see my girl in pain. Ouch.

How did 18 months go this fast?

"Hello, Papa(s)? Nana(s)? I have some news!
I went to the doctor and got more shots and am still in the higher percentiles for my age!"

Keifer's 18 month old stats:

  • Weight: 29 lbs, 14 ounces--95% (the lowest she's ever been *gasp*)
  • Length: 34 1/2 inches -- 97%
  • Head: 19 1/2 centimeters --97%
  • Can someone please tell me where the past 18 months have gone? Have you seen my baby girl? My baby Keifer is not a "baby" anymore. She has grown into this big monster of a girl, who doesn't simply walk anywhere. Oh no, she runs and dances and practically skips away as fast as she can go, her little motor inside her saying "go go go".
  • Keifer continues to love music with a passion. If she doesn't like the song I have on the radio or CD playing, she makes herself clear from the back seat that this "song" isn't going to cut it. When she hears one she does approve of, she'll clap and say "yay". I cannot even begin to count the number of words she's using, but she's moved into two-word phrases, and is so funny. Besides the usual "want ___", "hi, ____", she's also saying to inanimate objects, such as apples. We had to say "hi, apples" to the apples in the orchard this past weekend, and of course, we always have to say goodbye to everything and everyone as well. Our girl is a social being.
  • She also continues to love her dancing to the music, and Baby Ballroom is the highlight of both mama and K's week. Mama isn't able to lift her anymore, since I have restrictions on my PG and not lifting over 20 lbs, but the girls at class have been bending over backwards to help with Keifer, and for that, I am so grateful. Keifer's highlight of the dance class is usually the parachute songs and games, and at the end of parachute, we have to say goodbye to 'chute' and blow many kisses. She has to know it's going bye-bye.
  • Keifer is also putting people in her lives together in her little mind. For example, when I pick her up, she'll put her hands up in the air in that questioning "where" stance, and say "daddy? daddy?". Or, if she sees Nana, but not Papa, she'll say to Nana, "Papa? Papa?", and vice versa with whoever she sees minus their partner. Abby is her beloved cousin lately. Abby was here a few weeks ago and Keifer literally shrieks with love and joy and throws herself into Abby's arms. I told Abby next summer she might have to stay with us a day of the week to entertain Keifer, who thinks the moon and sun rises and sets on her. It's so heartwarming to watch this relationship grow.
  • Keifer has unfortunately started biting our friends at daycare as recently as the past week, so we're working on using words instead of our mouth and teeth. She's started picking up the sign for "help" and "stop" and I encourage her to use these instead of her mouth. Ugg. I've become the parent of "that child". It's humiliating, yet I've been hearing more and more from other parents that their children went through this as well. We're working hard on this. Today, our girl did better, she was constantly praised for NOT chomping on a friend, and she received a certificate for being kind to her friends *giggle*. If anyone has any more tips on how to put the kabosh on this, we'd love to hear!

Keifer's 15 month stats

Keifer had her 15 month check up this AM: after waiting 30 minutes in the lobby with a busy toddler who isn't feeling well, we finally saw our doctor. Apparently, the teen aged girl ahead of us refused her shots and had to be held down by her mom. Interesting.

It's not a surprise, but K remains at the top of her growth chart. I had thought she'd weigh more than she does because she gets damn heavy in my arms, but she's solid.

She didn't get shots today, because even with Tylenol, she still had a 101.7 temperature. She's dealing with a summer cold that Papa Dale now has and Mama is starting to get. Fun times. So, no shots today but we'll get them at her 18 month check up (they're just boosters anyways).

Our girl's stats:
Weight: 27 lbs, 9 ounces -- 97%ile
Length: 33 1/4 inches -- 97%ile
Head (that big Soupy head): 19 1/4 --97%ile

She' s doing fantastic for all her developmental milestones, especially her language skills, which wasn't a surprise, but yet it makes me feel so warm and fuzzy. We have until 18 months to drop the bottle completely (oh Lordy, I hope that goes well, as our girl LOVES to have her bottle at bedtimes). I know she shouldn't so I've been watering them down and brushing her teeth whenever she wakes up to help hold off the teeth germies.

One Year Stats

We had our one year check up this AM. K is doing awesome in all areas, especially her language and social skills (as we knew). We talked about her disliking bearing weight on her legs, and how we'll monitor this for a few more months, and continue to work on it. We're going to start weaning her from formula to whole milk, and hope it agrees with her digestive system.
Our poor girl had 3 shots this AM: the chicken pox one, the Hepatitis A, and MMR. Mama sure doesn't like putting all these things into my babie's body, but we discussed it initially at length with our pediatrician and we trust her. Keifer had crocodile tears and was screaming. The nurse gave her a Dora sticker, and she clutched that sticker afterwards for dear life. Then, we had to subject her to more horror: we had to have her finger pricked and squeezed for blood to check her iron levels. I think she thought we were never going to stop with the torture. Poor girl passed out in the car within 5 minutes on our way to Elaine's house. I dropped her off and she seemed happy to be with her friends. The minute she saw Elaine and Ava sitting at the table when we arrived, she was beaming.
Here's our big girl's stats:
Height: 31 1/2 inches -- 97%ile
Weight: 25 lbs 12 oz. -- 97%ile
Head: 18 3/4 cm. -- 97%ile
Dr. J. commented that our girl is following her growth curve exactly spot on, so we are thankful for a healthy and happy little angel girl!

9 Months Stats

We had our big 9 month appointment this AM, a few weeks after her actual "9 month birthday" - and all is great! K - the big BAB that she is - has gone from "off the charts" to the 97%ile in height, weight and head size. Ironically, her boyfriend Christian also had HIS 9 month appointment this AM (at the same time, 8 AM) and they weigh the same and are the same length. It was in the stars, I'm telling you. That being said.........her stats:

Weight: 23 pounds 12 ounces
Length: 30 1/3 inches
Head: 18 1/2

Our girl amazed the doctor with her language and social skills, and she is right on the money for her gross motor, now that she's army crawling around. Her language and social skills are in the upper teen months for development, but I honestly believe all the books we read and the fact that we were blessed with a girl with a wonderful disposition really helps. She smiled and flirted with the nurse and the doctor, and only wailed in protest when her ears were being checked. All was well, no shots, and our next check up will be when she is 12 months *sniff*. The time is going way too fast.

Our girl is OFF THE CHARTS, and more....

Yep, our big girl is OFF THE CHARTS!
We had her 6 month check up today, where she proceeded to coo and giggle, and chatter, and gaga and dada and nana to the nurses and doctors' delight. She certainly charmed the pants on the doctor, who commented that she was one of the happiest babies she had come across in awhile! *smile*. Of course, the shots that she got in each leg did NOT keep that smile on her face; oh no, she screamed and cried and mommy even cried along with her this time - oye, my heart.

Anyhoo, our girl is off the charts for height and weight: coming in at 20 pounds, 7 ounces, and 28 1/2 inches long. Her head circumference is 45 cm., which is in the 97%ile. Whew. I knew she was big when the buttons/snaps were popping open on the 12-18 month overalls cousin Aubrie JUST gave us. But man, off the charts. No wonder she doesn't like to roll around - would you wanna move if your weight was off the charts? LOL.

This past weekend, she and I (and the puppers) got to enjoy our visit to Duluth with Papa and Nana. We got to spend lots of time with Auntie Auntie Barb (that's what Aubrie calls her great-auntie, my mom "Auntie Auntie", so we've decided FOR Keifer that she'll call Barb that), and Aubrie and my cousin (Aubrie's mom) Becky. Aubrie had fun reading to Keifer, and playing with her Auntie Auntie and Auntie Carrie (me), and asking her Uncle Dale for more ice cream (apparently this is what he is good for: fixing things and ice cream LOL). It's going to be so much fun when the girls get older, and they can chatter away and play with each other.
Listen up, Keifer, while I read you "Skip to my Lou"
Keifer decides to taste test the table and place mat before diving into her rice cereal and peas.

Four Month Check -Up

Keifer had her 4 month check up today and both her AND mommy left the office in tears, as baby was NOT a happy camper from her shots. *sigh*.

She is OK now; we came home and she played on the blanket for awhile, after squealing with delight in her swing (watching the birdies go around). She chugged down 8 ounces , fussed for a bit, and is sleeping soundly. Hopefully this will be true all night, as she has had a hard couple days -due to unexplained fussiness.

The Pediatrician checked her out and declared all was well and sounded great with our monkey. She is definitely a BAB (big ass baby), though. Holy cow:

Her height: 26 3/4 inches -- 100%
Her weight: 17. 10 pounds -- 100%
Her head: 17 inches -- 94%

WHOA! No wonder our girl is quickly filling out and almost out-growing her 9 month clothes, easing her way into 12 month outfits. Mommy is having a heck of a time trying to outfit her in this unseasonably cool weather we've been having! LOL.
Oh, and our girl has a new sound: it somewhat sounds like a cough, its at the back of her throat, and I finally caught it on video! Enjoy!

Here she is Pre-Doctor (and shots) visit:
and after, chillin' on her blanket with Sassy Sager.

Shots are NO fun

:O(
Just ask Keifer.
Last night was really rough for her -- seems as though our girl is NOT good with pain *ahem, just like her mama*.
She cried and screamed all night whenever the medicine for pain started to wear off. Mommy and daddy even teared up - because nothing really calmed her down until she fell asleep. All we could do was walk and jiggle her and shhhh in her ear. The poor puppies were heartsick for her. And mommy and daddy both got tears in their eyes listening to their angel scream and cry.

I woke up at 2 when she awoke me with her crying and guess who was sleeping in the rocking chair in her room? (For the first time ever?). Her knight in shining fur - Treble! *awww, what a sweet Tboy*
Luckily, she is a gem this AM and her happy -go-lucky self. She even made it our for a quick shopping expedition with mama! So she is good! And Tboy and Sass are very relieved, as they are sunning themselves off and on out on the deck on "their" towel.

2 months old!

Happy 2 months to Keifer Lynn - as of yesterday (June 10!) We had her doctor appointment today and she is doing really great! She is currently in the 95%ile for her height and weight - she weighs 13 2 1/2 lbs, and is 23 3/4 inches long. Her head size is at the 90%ile - -she has her daddy's head!

She is right on target for all her milestones - for social, motor, and language development - and seems to be a bit ahead for language already. Could it be all the talking and reading mommy and daddy do to her? This AM , while I was taking a shower, she sounded like she was making some new sounds - just cooing and babbling away to her toy doggie and kitty. Our girl has also has something called "baby acne" that is apparently very common and shows up between 6-10 weeks. So our girl is right on target!

We did our photo shoot with our girl last night - before she got her shots -- poor Keifer got her first batch of shots at her appointment - she screamed and cried and mommy teared up. She is OK and has been sleeping most of the day, but each time the children's Tylenol wears off, she is screaming bloody murder! Poor girl *breaking heart* Daddy CJ is currently walking the floor with her while she whimpers and cries - my poor angel.

Two weeks old

It is SO hard to believe that 2 weeks ago at this time exactly, I was in labor! Keifer is 2 weeks old today!Amazing how fast time goes -in the blink of an eye, my life is continuing to blur right by me. I'm so thankful that I have the rest of the school year off, and that I have the summer to spend with my girl and my fur kids, adjusting to our new life. I can't imagine going back to work after 6 weeks - I would be an utter mess!

Miss K. had her newborn Pediatrician appointment yesterday - and yesterday, Daddy CJ went back to work. He was sad to leave, but he came home at mid-day to take me and our Princess to the doctor. Our little girl is thriving! We kind of thought she was, but the doctor confirmed it! At birth, she was 8 pounds, 10 ounces; she went home 4 days later at 8 lbs., 6 oz., and yesterday she was 9 pounds, 2 ounces! She is in the 75%ile for her weight (overachiever, piggie girl!). Her length is still 21 inches (75%ile as well), and her head size is in the 80%ile! Big-headed girl! No wonder you didn't want to come out! LOL.

She did a major poop job at the doctor, which made it more real. LOL. She didn't seem to mind the examination, but didn't really enjoy the doctor prodding her mouth and nose and ears. LOL. The doctor commented on how she seems like a mellow baby - and I guess she is? We have a mellow little girl on our hands - which we are so thankful for! Mellow until it's time to go to bed at night - then she gets a bit fussy and doesn't want to be let go of (which of course, breaks our hearts). We rock her as much as our tired eyes can handle, and the past 2 nights have been pretty good *knock on WOOD*. She has only woken up once in the middle of the night and then slept until around 6 AM when daddy gets up for work. I'm praying this continues! LOL.

Other good news - I had my blood pressure checked at my OB's office (upstairs from Keif's doc),and it was GOOD! YAY! I passed the scale on the way out the door and asked if I could hop on? I did, and yay- I've lost 30 pounds since 2 weeks ago! All the fluid in my Shrek cankles and legs seem to be gone - and my belly is slowly but surely starting to flatten down. Of course, it's still mushy and floppy, and my belly button is STILL brown, but I'll take the 30 pound drop in weight! I gained about 45 pounds total with Keifer in my tummy!

"I love my activity mat" - the first time Keifer laid under it, she was in complete AWE - you could just see the wheels turning - like, "What IS this thing?" Almost a smile for mama?
Daddy and his girls (can you see Sass?)
Another Abby and Keifer picture- Abby wrote Auntie and Keifer a homemade letter- telling us she loves us so much! Such a proud big cousin.
Keifer's new hang out when mama showers! She loves the Papasan chair, and seems to enjoy the shower and fan/vent sound! Its nice for mama to be able to get clean, too! LOL
Mama attempting a burp - and enjoying the snuggle time - and the coos and sighs.
