Ghost Light ( Ivy Granger 2) by EJ Stevens

Hello to all!!!

I'm late to post a review this week but it wasn't because i didn't want to i simply had no time at all for me. Wednesday was my birthday and i didn't even got a few minutes to read or nap or even unwrap gift(s) that gives you an idea of how busy this week was.
Honestly if it wasn't for some blogger friends that took the time to write me or send me a little something it would have been a day like any other, nothing special so thank you once again to everyone who thought of me!

What did i decide to give you my opinion on today?  I wanted to focus on two challenges the take control of TBR pile and the read sequel one for that reason and because i enjoyed book 1 i jumped into Ivy Granger book 2....if i had to start again i would do things differently. First, i would like the novella taking place after book 1 and before book 2 " Blood and Mistletoe" ( worse is that i do have it on hand -_-) then i would have left months between reading both books to avoid being bothered by too many repetition.
It's one of the reason i don't reread a book soon, i can wait years without difficulties because if i read it when it's still too fresh in mind it annoys me to no end as it's too repetitive so i tend to skip pages etc. Well better to wait longer and savor the story.

So let see that in more detail with my opinion on Ghost Light by E J. Stevens.

Happy reading

Publisher: Sacred Oaks Press
Publication: 2013
ISBN:  0984247599
Genre: urban fantasy, paranormal
Violence: mild

Language: normal

Public: 18+
Source: won

Description from goodreads :

Ivy Granger, psychic detective, thought she'd seen it all...until now.

With a vengeful lamia that only she can see on the city streets, reports of specters walking Harborsmouth cemeteries, and an angry mob of faerie clients at her office door, it's bound to be a long night. Add in an offense against the faerie courts and a few foolish bargains and one thing is clear—Ivy Granger is in some seriously deep trouble.

Ivy Granger is back, gathering clues in the darkest shadows of downtown Harborsmouth. With the lives of multiple clients on the line, she's in a race against time. Ivy finally has a lead to the whereabouts of the one person who can help her control her wisp abilities, but will she put the needs of her clients above her own?

If Ivy doesn't find a solution soon, she could wind up a ghost herself.

GHOST LIGHT is the second novel in the bestselling Ivy Granger urban fantasy series by E.J. Stevens.

My opinion:
For this series i'm thinking that i will appreciate more if i don't read the books back to back, don't take me wrong the main story line, the universe and the separate investigation are good or perhaps even better than that but i have a problem with repetition.

In this book, the author made the story accessible even for those who haven't read the beginning yet  for that reason, i'm guessing, a lot of repetitions were used..not exactly repetition in this book but several whole passage were copied from book 1 either to introduce the universe or explaining the reasoning of Ivy...for me it cut my interest in the book at several occasion as simply it was still too fresh in my mind from book 1...after 2 thirds of the story though those "repetitions" disappear and i was again completely immersed and enjoying the story a lot. However, for those who have read the first instalment "Shadow Sight" first , i think you would do well to read the novella "Blood and Mistletoe" as well before starting this one. Now i haven't read it yet even if own it so i can't be sure it will fill the blank but for example Ivy speak a lot about Jenna and how she helped and trained her etc and that isn't explained in book  1. I'm hoping reading the novella will fill the blank and clear the confusion i felt sometimes.

That being said when the investigation really starts it's really an interesting one and we can see how the path Ivy is taking will be difficult. We learn more about her father and she is starting to remember her past with him better as well , she also dares to look into it. I really appreciated how she was maturing and trying to protect her friends and her lover ( that part was quite sweet)...now it ends with a cliffhanger not hard but still it angered me a little. So this is a good series i plan to continue but not in the near future either.

Score: 3,5/5

2016 Reading Challenge part 3: The novelties

Hello to all!

When i was looking for new Challenge to motivate me a little when i need it i came across one challenge that  i glimpsed last year but didn't dare to try: The prequel and sequel reading challenge.

How often we have series in our TBR pile and somehow delay reading teh next one in favor of trying a new one? i admit it happen to me regulary so  i think this challenge is simply perfect for 2016.

I won't set myself a specific list of titles for this challenge since it's not required ( *ouf* ) but i will do my best to get up to date in the series i've started while still discovering new ones.

This challenge works following a score of points for example a prequel or sequel novella is worth one point, a full book is worth 2 points etc....so can see all the rules here

2016 Prequel & Sequel Challenge
hosted by Jessi from  Novel Heartbeat and Melissa from Writer Grrl Reads

Since i'm not too sure of the number of sequels ( and prequel) i have in my TBR pile at this time and being cautious after the year 2015 i had i prefer to start at the first level especially since it's possible to move up of level if needed ( and the name of that level is perfect in my case too^^)

so at this time i'm aiming for level 1: 10-25 points Newbie

i will post my progress on the 2016 Challenges page.

Have you already tried this challenge? interested to?

2016 Reading Challenge(s) part 2: the one(s) i'm trying again

 Hello again,

As i told you before, this year i will try to do some challenge that i did in the past and wasn't that happy with perhaps or simply that i had no more books to qualify for the next edition... so those i've entered in the past but only once or twice and not regulary.

This is the case of the Witches and Witchcraft reading Challenge hosted by Melissa from Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf which i had entered in 2014 and i've giving another try this year.

2016 Witches & Witchcraft Reading Challenge

i'm aiming for level 1 as well: Initiate so it means between 1 and 5 books with a witch as main character.

You can sign up and read all the rules here!

i will update my progress on the 2016 Challenges page but feel free to give me suggestions here, which books would you choose for this challenge?

Tackle Your TBR Read-a-Thon Update week 1

Hello to all!

As i told you before i have joined Tressa Read-a-Thon which started last Monday and will continue this week ( you can still join)... i have for goal to read 4 books.

So this sunday isn't finished and i do hope to be able to read a little so this update is for Monday to Saturday of the past week... i'm a little ashamed because i've read even less than usual between the pain growing and several medical appointment and life events my free time was near to nothing.

What did i do so far? I've finished one book! Which i will present you tomorrow as i do want to give you the opportunity to preorder it as it's worth it. Dark Secrets anthology with Suzanne Johnson and others.
pre order on amazon here

So roughly 444 pages... really  i should have done better but i'm not giving up and i do hope this second week will be better and that i will complete all my goals.

So far i participated in one challenge like i planned and i commented on severals other participants posts but i didn't count how many. Only the books reading goals ( the main one ^^;;) still need to be worked on.

Are you participating? How are you doing at the middle of the read- a thon?

2014 Challenge sign up post part 2

Hi!,

oki after thinking a lot about it i decided to join some new challenges hosted by bloggers i trust, i think i will have a part 3 if not a 4th one because i tend to join many challenge but i decided this year to take it easy so i start at the lowest level possible and move up if necessary and i do select some where  a review can be used in different challenge  it will help my motivation without adding too much pressure( and if i do win something it would be a great bonus).

Here are those i join today, both are all year long to avoid the stress of a short time limitation

First :the 2014 Fur & Fangs reading Challenge

For this one you set your own goals which is fabulous, so many book with a vampires or a werewolves ( or fur shifters) do i plan to read....at least a global of 15 books but how many vampires ones and how many werewolves ones i really can't said. They are often included in my main favourites genre so it should be possible and if i do read more, even better

you can suscribe Here  on Phantasmic Reads and here is a small part of the rules to motivate you to join too

  • This challenge will run from January 1st, 2014, until December 31st, 2014.
  • Books must be started on or after January 1st, 2014 to count.
  • Books can be any publication date and any genre, as long as at least the subject or one of the main characters is a vampire or werewolf.
  • Any other shifter with fur can also count. (i.e. cats, tigers, bears).
  • Sign ups will be open until December 1st, 2014

Next, because after vampires and werevolves i could need to change my mind a little let see about... the witches!

2014 Witches & Witchcrafts reading Challenge

The level to start is also low which is great so i will try for  the level 1: initiate that means reading at least 1 book ( and up to 5) however i really can't tell which one as of yet.

You can sign up Here on Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf

As for  the rules here there are.

Challenge Rules:
  • This challenge will run from Jan 1, 2014 – Dec 31, 2014. I will be posting a place to link up a sign-up post (below), reviews and a wrap-up post. (Note: You do not have to review the books to participate, but only those who link up reviews will be entered for the prize)
  • Grab the reading challenge button (code & button below) and post this reading challenge on your blog to track your progress. Please include a link back to this sign-up post so others can join the reading challenge too. You do not have to be a book blogger to participate- you could track your progress and post reviews on Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, etc.
  • Any full length book that includes a witch as a main character or includes major witchcraft elements counts. They may be fiction or non-fiction. However, they should not be reference books which are not read cover to cover-I will leave this to your discretion.
  • Books can be any format (bound, eBook, audio).
  • Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.
  • You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap-up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.
  • When you sign up in the linky put the direct link to your post about joining the 2014 Witches & Witchcraft Reading Challenge, not just a link to your blog.

Winter Challenge

Hello to all!

As you could have seen the blog has been quite silent lately due to health problem...that affected my reading a lot more that i would have liked and i fell behind in my challenge objctive.
The situation is far forsettled but it's slowly improving ( except my hand) so when i saw Stephanie from Cover2Cover offering us some motivation to try to reach our challenge goal for 2013 i couldn't miss this opportunity and i joined the Winter Challenge

I'm trying not to overdo it because i still have a lot of Christmas preparation to do and i have some rest long overdue but i want to try to finish what i can ( i hate failing!) . So for stephanie we only have to read not to review which will help my goodreads challenge but i will try to review those entering other challenges.

i don't have any specific titles in mind but i want to read 6 books and/or novellas if possible and i need to review 3 sports romances as well as at least one paranormal one so that's what i will set as my goal and if achieve that i will be really happy^^

i will perhaps update this post as i advance in the challenge so don't hesitate to participate or to encourage me a little^^ i'm sure i will need it

2013 challenge part 4: Paranormal reading challenge sign up

 Hi!

If you are a follower of my blog, you must have learned a long time ago that urban fantasy and paranormal, paranormal romance are my favorite genres. However, i've discovered that in matter of different paranormal creatures i'm nearly nowhere... since i mostly read  book about vampire or werewolf. To change that a little and perhaps find new favorite, i've decided to enter another challenge  the " 2013 Paranormal Reading Challenge" co hosted by Megan from Megan Likes Books and Jessi from Auntie Spinelli Reads .

The goal here is to diversify the kind of creature we encounter in our paranormal readings. So we have to read a least one book ( it's the minimum, you can read as many as you want) for all creatures in the list , we can read whenever we want but each month will have a topic and if we read the month's creature it will give more entries in the giveaway. I don't think i will manage to stick to each month creature becauese for some it could take me time to find the book that qualify so my goal is to read at least one book for each creature but without taking care of the month when i read it.

The list of creatures isn't too long and if some could be easy to come across, others will necessity a bit of work for me.
  • Vampires
  • Werewolves/Shifters
  • Fey
  • Angels/Nephilim
  • Mermaids
  • Dragons
  • Zombies
  • Demons
  • Witches/Wizards
  • Ghosts
  • Aliens
  • Other (ie: sirens, unicorns, centaurs, timetravel etc.)
To have more info and to sign up go here

Do you want to join too?

Magic Hands by Jennifer Laurens

Hello to all,

after my first day back at studying, not easy, i 've decided to post the review of Magic Hands by jennifer Laurens.

Enjoy!

Editor : Grove Creek Publishing LLC
Publication : 2011
ISBN:  1933963972
Genre: contemporary romance
Violence: none

Langage: normal
sex: none
Public: 16+
Source: book won at Romance book junkie Halloween event

Short description from goodread :

Cort, the high school senior jock seems to have it all -- except a summer job. When he lands one doing women's nails, his eyes are opened to the catty, back-stabbing world of females. Girls he thought he knew and trusted turn out to shock and use him. He gets to know Rachel, an elusive girl the others gossip about, a girl with secrets. From her he learns there is more to life than weekend partying and social status, and one of the secrets she shares with him will change his life forever.

My opinion:

After my first bad experience with contemporary romance, i was a bit afraid to start this book. However it was better that was I expected, not necessary I book I would have bought but I enjoyed reading it.
The characters are realistic and we find ourselves immersed in a college that we wish to leave immediately, at least me I do. The superficiality of a large part of these adolescents is well shown and with it it’s dangers.  Rachel is a young girl with her hearth where it should be and a good levelled head on her shoulders. Now let’s be honest, acting like her even with the rumours and such is far from easy. Also she is lucky to have friends to help her and that’s not a guaranty in our world. She is a great character and I hope some will see her as a model but it will be difficult.

Cort is a boy very patient. Yes he has matured and we see it in the way he thought and put himself in perspective. He is also courageous. He wants to work and he take the job even if its’ a bad one for his reputation, health and quite a slave job with his boss. He does it and he continues even when it’s becoming difficult. I admire him for that. Even better, he stays true to his decision and with a girl like Bree that’s quite a miracle to succeed like him. Also, even if he doesn’t realize it, he is quite an attentive brother and he didn’t hesitated to be honest about himself when it was necessary to protect her.

Bree is the typical nowadays girl, sad to says but so true, beautiful in the outside and all poison inside. I hate girls like her, perhaps because I was more a victim for the ones like her. I was so frustrated by the way she acted and how she tried to humiliate everyone and after acting like if nothing happened. She is proud to fool around…she should be disgusted because she has no respect for herself at all…

To recommend to the ones who are different in a good way and should see that it’s a force and not something to be frown upon and to the youngs who should learn patience and that it’s best to wait for something very worth it more than just want to be like everyone else (or how we think they are)

Score:  4/5

First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost

Hello to all,

I know i've wrote a lot in French this month and i didn't want my English Readers to feel left out, i wasn't well at all and when i'm ill it's more easy for me to write in my native language. But today i'm so happy that i didn't want to make you wait longer. ^^;; I'm sure i could have wrote this better and i will try to do better anyway here it's the review of First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost.

It's the first book from the Night Huntress world ( published also in French in 2011 by Milady) so it's kind of a spin off but for me it's really part of the Night Huntress serie. The events if this book take place after book 4 Destined for an Early Grave and before Eternal kiss of Darkness.

Enjoy!

Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows--her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield--and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family's past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness--and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her. He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human--even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together . . . Because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

Story:

Denise is traumatized by the event taking place at the new eve when she lost her husband because of that she decided to break contact with Cat and Bones and the vampires’ world. After all these months she is starting to have less episodes even if she can’t forget. When several members of her family died from heart attack in a short time, she want to think it’s just bad luck…until her cousin is attacked in front of her by a man who resist pepper spray and silver. For the police, it’s a heart attack and nobody saw anything. Now she know she is confronted to something paranormal but when she wants to call her friend Cat  to help her, she doesn’t have her actual number. The only one she has it’s the one from a Vampire friend of Cat: Spade.

Spade has been attracted to Denise since the first time he lays his eyes on her, but Crispin was clear: she is off the limit. He has only two kind of use for human women: feeding and casual sex and Cat’s friend is too good for that. However, when Denise calls him he fells he has an obligation to check her story. A demon against Denise, that’s a big problem and the said demon branded her and threatened her: either she deliver him one of her ancestor that made a pact with him or all family members die. Together, they decide to find the man to save her without endangering Cat and Bones so in disguise of a couple they search the vampire world. Not as easy at it seems when anger make her transform or when her blood is an illegal drug so that everything must be kept a secret.

Style:

Jeaniene Frost give to her readers a Spin off that is a part of the Night Huntress even indirectly. Without the knowledge from the 4 first books of the serie, it would be perhaps difficult to understand all the implications in the story. For her fans, that’s a parfait parenthesis while waiting for the night Huntress serie, we find Ian, Mencheres, Cat and Bones and Fabian.  Romance, psychological aspect of the past traumatisms and action, all is there.

My opinion:

A good read but I won’t recommend it to the ones who haven’t read the books1-4 of the Night Huntress serie. It’s A spin off yes but not as independent as some other quite moiré like a long novella^^;; ( a 4.5 if we want). We discover the past of Spade that we learned about before but only in glimpses and see the consequences of the new Eve events.  I enjoyed it yes but not as much as I hoped, the humour that is included in the night huntress serie is missing and it’s also darker. And there are some things that’s bother me…how can Spade be happy when theoricaly Denise is illegal and must be put to death. Also it said that marriage is only recognize/ legal when between vampires but Bones used that to save Cat and she was still an hybrid at the time so it shouldn’t have worked…so just some contradictions nothing too serious but some fans could ask themselves some questions.

Score : 4/5

Quatrième de couverture de l'éditeur Milady:

 Ennemis mortels.
