Toying around with the Clone Wars

"Hello there"

A taste of things to come, with my little boy showing more of an interest in Wargames, I thought I would have a go at gaming the Clone wars.

He has watched the Clone wars all of his life and now that the Lego side of things is dropping off, maybe some more detailed models are called for.

I bought an AT-TE off eBay only to discover the cockpit was missing. Angry at myself for not checking the pictures well enough, I bought another. The first model could be painted up as a destroyed vehicle or I could converted it into a command vehicle.

This whole idea came when I spotted some 15mm printed Clone wars stuff on eBay. Although, I haven't received them yet so cannot comment on their quality. It's all in the air at the moment...

My little boy did show a lot of interest in the idea though so that's a good start.

It's time to clear a little space on the worktop and that's what these walkers do best!

AK Puddles

It took long enough but I finally received some AK puddle mixture, after my initial eBay order went AWOL in the post.
Many moons ago while basing these Weird World War Germans, I had created puddles for them in the mud mixture. A few months on and I'm ready to fill them. This is a new product for me, but one that seems easy to use.

I simply poured the mixture into the gaps I had made and that's it, job done. There were a few bubbles, but I used a lolly stick to just take these out.
It's shiny and is very eye catching, gleaming on the snow. So a little goes a long way to make the bases 'pop'.

I didn't go too crazy with it, learning my lessons from the snow earlier. Just little touches here and there really works the best.

Boot prints are always good to fill with the muddy liquid. It's the sort of product that once you have it, you'll find loads of places to put it. War of the Roses muddy fields and ECW command bases spring to mind for me.

German Uhlans

I had an idea to create some Weird World War German cavalry using the Grognards cavalry.
The kit is basically unchanged except the masked helmet from the German box set. I also added some packs and pouches from Maxmini.
When these are dry I will add on some breathing masks for the horses.
I love the silhouette the steampunk backpack gives the trooper. It does seem odd that cavalry troopers would be wearing packs but this is the future and every trooper needs his enviro apparatus. The steampunk pack even has a pressure tank at its base. This will look good painted a bronze colour.

I also created a medic using some Star grave bits. A scavenger torso with a German gasmask and he is good to go. It's nice the the scavenger bodies have the look of a trench coats so fit straight in.

The Star grave figures are a little on the short side, but a bit of spare base brings him up to size.

Uhlans charge British heavy infantry.
I only bought one sprue from eBay to test my idea and I'm pleased with the results. At some point I'll have to buy a whole box.

UPDATE: The horse now have weird crude gas masks that give them the look of giant rats.

The medic gets his shoulder pauldrons and an extra pouch.

I think these are ready for some paint now.

British Heavy Infantry

The heavies patrol the lines. I feel a lot better about using the snow products now. Vallejo on the base and the lighter Valhalla Blizzard on the figure. Stick to this and you can't go too wrong.

News from the Front

British re-enforcement arrived today.

I also picked up another likely looking Tommy type from eBay. These come from 3D kingdoms and look very apt. Unfortunately, I think they look a little on the short side again, even though they are sold as 28mm. I've keep them on their slotta peg to help give them a boost height wise  I might use these variants as Canadians, just so I can explain their different kit.
After buying a couple of these 3D print packages, it's quite nice to find out that out of all of them, I think I prefer the kitbashed plastic ones I made up

A ptop robot again from 3D kingdoms. I thought these odd, low tech bots would make good German machines. I'm looking forward to painting them in the classic dark yellow armour colour.

Also a beautiful thing arrived and although I've been looking forward to it, it blow me away when I opened the box. It's sold as a Male MK IV. However the panelling is very fantasy and made up. This is perfect for what I wanted for a weird World War.

It was nice that it came in one piece, another walker type arrived looking like a printed sheet.

Here are two printed Tommies... I had trouble sticking the new guys to the MDF bases, then I had the idea of setting the  in the mud mix from Vallejo. This should fix them solid, then I can go over them again when I come to base then proper.

 UPDATE:

I think it's worked... With their muddy bases covered, the heavies match up quite well.
I tried a little tip I got off a diarma maker on YouTube and sprinkled some static grass in the wet mud. Seems to work nice and adds some extra detail.

Not too bad now height wise.
