Pop Isn't a Crime: Freezepop
"Originally, their music was entirely composed on a small portable MIDI sequencer, a Yamaha QY-70, which has often been mistaken for a Game Boy.." -- Wikepedia
"Another thing that's been really helpful, is that a LOT of people find out about us from MP3s that are online, and there are a LOT of free stuff...We have a lot of people that tell us they found our music online and then go to our website and buy our album.
"With every game that's been released it's gotten a little bit bigger. We can actually calculate how many people are going to be at our show based on the number of games that have been released. Our first big success was from Guitar Hero Two (Super Sprode) when both the PS2 and Xbox 360 versions were out at the same time." -- from an interview with Freezepop, OCModShop
I was introduced to Freezepop by my 16 year old nephew over the holidays. I was expecting a typical teenager pop band (i.e. bubblegum). But I was wrong. Freezepop has clever lyrics and unique compositions. They also used gaming for exposure rather than battle traditional music channels. They are not dumb kids.
Freezepop is engaging, infectious, brimming with ingenuity and talent. I picked the first video below because it clearly shows playing the QY-70 as an instrument. The solo begins at about 5:00. Anyone for air-Game Boy (v. guitar)? The second vid is from their new album, Future Future Future Perfect, which is even better. If you already know about Freezepop, then your not here to read my opinion. But if you haven't, they aren't just for kids and are worth checking out.
