Colin Firth: The Biography by Alison Maloney

Anyone who has seen the Bridget Jones films or Pride and Prejudice will know this name. Colin Firth was Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice while his character in the Bridget Jones series was also named, ironically, Mr. Darcy. But there are more films and theatre work under his name than people know

I actually found this book by complete accident while searching through the Biography section on my Amazon Kindle. It sounded interesting, so I bought it and read it. It was a very good and very interesting book. I loved him in Love Actually and What a Girl Wants. He was so funny in both

He was born Colin Andrew Firth on September 10, 1960. He has two siblings named Katie and Jonathan. His parents worked as teachers while his grandparents were missionaries. He had a very nomadic childhood, spending time in Nigeria, the United States and England. He went to school for a time in the Midwest US, around Missouri. While there, he felt like an outsider and his classmates didn't improve this feeling. They, more or less, referred to him as an "English geek." Upon arrival in the UK, to attend school, he was, once again, made to feel like an outsider because of his Midwestern US accent.

As time went on, he flirted with the idea of pursuing music as a career, even forming a band with friends that only lasted a short while. He started performing in plays, his first being a Christmas panto where he played Jack Frost, and found he really enjoyed it. That prompted him to go to school for performing arts. It was during his final term at The Drama Centre at Chalk Farm that he played Hamlet and was discovered as having a talent for acting. The role that really brought his name to fame was the West End play Another Country. His first television role, however was the 1988 program Tumbledown. A role that would be both a blessing and a curse for him was the 1995 film Pride & Prejudice, based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name, where he played Mr. Darcy. Anyone who has seen this film knows of a certain scene where he fell into a pond and emerged soaking wet, able to see right through his shirt. That made him a sort of sex symbol. The reason it was a blessing and a curse is because, while Pride & Prejudice helped make his name more notable, it's also a curse because it would be hard for people to see him as anything other than Mr. Darcy. His brother Jonathan even jokingly asked "Isn't Mr. Darcy supposed to be sexy?" after hearing his brother would be playing the role

Pride & Prejudice. This scene is what made him appeal to the ladies

As time went on, he would star in more films, most notably the Bridget Jones series. He did have a problem with the character of Bridget Jones putting two people in classes: singletons and smug marrieds. He had a problem with that, as he was happily married at the time to an Italian woman named Livia. He mentioned that for one of the Bridget Jones films, he had to be seen shirtless, so he worked extremely hard to get into perfect physical shape. It worked. In one of the Bridget Jones films, he can be seen showing rock hard six-pack abs

He was also married once before, to a woman named Meg Tilly, whose sister is actress Jennifer Tilly. With Meg, they had one child, a son named Will. Even after the marriage ended, Meg and Colin remained on good terms and Colin always made sure to maintain a good relationship with his son. He also has a good relationship with the two children she had, Emily and David. Later on, he met a woman named Livia Giuggioli. When he met her parents to announce their engagement, he impressed them with his impeccable manners and, instead of staying in the same house as his fiancee for the night, he stayed at a hotel. They married and had two children. He talked about how happy he was becoming a father and instead of being queasy at the birth of children, he loved being with his wife during the births. His most recent film was The King's Speech, about King George VII and how he overcame his speech impediment. Other films he's starred in include Love Actually, What a Girl Wants. In What a Girl Wants, he plays a politician named Henry Dashwood who is running for office and later comes to find out that his old girlfriend was pregnant and sent away by his political manager because it would be seen as bad form to have agirlfriend and a child and not be married in the proper way. In Love Actually, he plays an author who is struggling with writer's block, so he takes a retreat to Portugal and falls in love with a local woman

The King's Speech

Overall, Colin Firth has a down to earth, humble personality that earns him respect from a lot of people. He was actually mocked for a while for playing Mr. Darcy because people thought he came from a well to do upbringing. He stated multiple times that he was a working class kid who went to secondary-modern school. That he was not a kid who went to expensive schools. His parents were working class and advocated for human rights, a cause that Colin strongly supports to this day. He is strongly supportive of human rights. He's a humble, down to earth man with impeccable manners, a perfect gentleman and he is a good person. He maintains a good relationship with his son Will and his ex Meg Tilly and her children Emily and David and he's happily married to his wife Livia and he's even highly fluent in Italian

This is one of my favorite movies. Jet Li is one of my favorite actors

-Michael Jenn: Wyeth

-Phyllida Law: Distinguished Lady

-Carole Ann Wilson: Maddy

-Jaclyn Tze Wey: Danny's Mother

Did You Know?

-Initially, Morgan Freeman's character Sam was not meant to be blind at all. He had heard about a piano school where the students were blind. The school had a high reputation and the scholars had developed their hearing. Freeman was inspired to make his character blind because he felt it would be easier for Sam to "see" the child in Jet Li's character Danny, not the brutal killer he was forced to become

-At the start of the movie, Bob Hoskins actually cut Jet Li's hair, as his character would have done

-During a break in filming, Bob Hoskins, still wearing his white suit covered in fake blood, went to a local Starbucks for coffee. Customers recognized him and he spent 10 minutes signing autographs before going back to the set

-In addition to being a highly skilled martial artist, Jet Li is also a highly proficient piano player. He has showed his proficiency of playing the piano on numerous occasions. There are videos online of him playing the piano beautifully

-In the supermarket fight scene, one of the shoppers in the background is executive producer Luc Besson, who was on set that day visiting

-The role of Bart, played by Bob Hoskins, was originally intended for Albert Finney. But he dropped out to do the 2003 film Big Fish. Other actors considered for the role of Bart included Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Michael Caine and Brian Cox, all of whom turned down this film

-The dog collar Danny wears is an actual prototype of a dog collar designed just for this movie. It includes a retractable chain that Bart keeps under his control to keep Danny under control

-DMX, the co-star Jet Li starred with, was late on a frequent basis for filming

Did You Know?

-In multiple interviews, Jet Li stated he was not happy with this film or its production. He had no confidence in director Philip G. Atwell and even halfway through production, Jet Li knew this film would get bad ratings and not make much

-The silver car Jet Li drives is a Spyker C8 Spyder. This car costs around $287,000

-In the scene where Rogue meets the Ti brothers, Rogue speaks in Mandarin while the Ti brothers speak in Cantonese. The dialects might sound similar, but they are not. For those fluent in either dialect, they will easily recognize the sounds of Cantonese and Mandarin. Not only that, but if someone is only fluent in Cantonese, they will not understand Mandarin and it's the same in reverse-someone fluent in Cantonese will not understand Mandarin

-The motorcycle Jet Li rides in the scene where he baits the Triads is a Hellcat motorcycle made by the Confederate Motor Company

-In the Sayu Teahouse, when Takada is injured and Crawford comes in, Takada (Kenneth Choi) says "In Japan, you'd be dead!" This closely mirrors the line Jet Li says as Wah Sing Ku in Lethal Weapon 4. In that scene, where Mel Gibson and Danny Glover go to meet Uncle Benny at the Chinese restaurant, Jet Li says "In Hong Kong, you'd be dead."

Rising Sun (1993)

This 1993 film, starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes, centers on the world of corporate Japan in Los Angeles

Summary

-Los Angeles police detectives Web Smith and John Connor investigate the murder of an escort girl in the boardroom of a Japanese-owned corporation in Japan. They must act as the liaison between the investigating officer Tom Graham and the Japanese executives

Cast

-Sean Connery: Capt. John Connor

-Wesley Snipes: Lt. Webster "Web" Smith

-Harvey Keitel: Lt. Tom Graham

-Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa: Eddie Sakamura

-Kevin Anderson: Bob Richmond

-Mako: Yoshida-san

-Ray Wise: Senator John Morton

-Stan Egi: Ishihara

-Stan Shaw: Phillips

-Tia Carrere: Jingo Asakuma

-Tatjana Patitz: Cheryl Lynn Austin

Did You Know?

-Michael Crichton, who wrote the book this film is based on, wrote the character of John Connor with Sean Connery in mind. In fact, the name "John Connor" is an Anglicized version of the name "Sean Connery"

-Writer / director Philip Kaufman believed the lead role should go to a black man, which led to disagreements with author Michael Crichton and crew member Michael Backes

-Shelley Michelle was the woman lying nude on the floor while Eddie Sakamura (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) ate sushi off of her body. She said that scene took a few days to shoot, spending hours laying on the floor completely naked. On the first day, she noticed crew members kept looking at her. It stopped after a while because she thought they had gotten used to seeing her. Real SWAT team members were used to raid the place. They snuck looks at her, but it didn't bother her. When they bust through the windows, real glass was used. She was worried about being cut with the glass, but thankfully never got cut

-The red car Eddie drives is an American-made Vector V8, a supercar that can hit speeds of 242 mph

-When Smith and Connor go to Sakamura's house, they are confronted by two body guards, who proceed to tell them that Sakamura is not available and that they are also black belts in karate. Connor's response is "But of course you are." This is a nod to the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever. It's from the scene where James Bond meets Plenty O'Toole and she says "Hi, I'm Plenty." And James responds "But of course you are."

-At the country club, Senator Morton says "If the battle can't be won, don't fight it." This is a quote taken from The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Ironically, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Wesley Snipes would star in The Art of War in 2000, based on Sun Tzu's book

-Mako and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa appeared together in the 2001 film Pearl Harbor
