Owl Web Cam Link

I have just placed a link on my blog for an web cam on an owl's nest.

This owl' nest has been occupied for quite a number of years. There was a web cam on this nest last year. The pair of owls were successful in raising their brood. The web cam placement was not good but this year they have a better camera and the placing is much better.

The owls aren't nesting yet. Owls have been seen visiting the nest.

So if you are curious and have the time check into the owl's nest and see how they are doing.

First Owl Egg Hatches

I have had a link to the Ellis Bird Farm web cam which is focused on a great horned owl nest. The first egg has hatched! Someone was watching and saw a little owlet. Owls lay eggs every couple of days and start incubating when the first egg is laid. There is a wide variation in size of owlets on the nest and in hard times the youngest ones may starve to death.

So for the next while there should be more to watch than just the female sitting tight on the nest. The owlets will be in the nest for a long time before they fledge so there's lots more to see.

Owl Web Cam at Ellis Bird Farm

I recently put a link to a web cam on a great horned owl nest. Now I admit that I'm not someone who will spend much time watching any web cam.

I have seen many owl nests from the ground. There's not really much to see as the owl sits low on the nest. Many times you're not really sure that there's an owl on the nest. I've seen many excellent photographs of owl nests.

However, this web cam gives something I have never seen before. We have had seven days of continuous snow. We have received about 30cm (12 in.) of snow. This makes for a nest view that I have never seen before. The edge of the nest has a good build up of snow and the owl seems to be sitting in a snow bank. The owl shakes her feathers from time to time to get the snow off her body.

I have a better idea. Click on my link and go to the web cam and see the owl on the nest with all the snow piled up around her.
