Christ the King Chapel at Christendom College in Front Royal, VA

This new chapel at Christendom College was dedicated on Easter Saturday,
April 15, 2023 during their 45th anniversary year.

It is magnificent!

The Diocese of Arlington has very few nice looking churches,
and of those, none are truly spectacular . . . until now!

You can see the church from I-66.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Colonial Beach, VA

PHASE 2 OF BEAUTIFICATION

Back in 2016, I posted about the initial phase of beautification at our mother parish.

In the past year, this church has undergone phase 2 of that beautification.

Wainscoting lines the sides of the church and new pews complete the nave.

The woodwork in the sanctuary has been expanded to fill in the entire front wall to include the gorgeous new side altars and new statues.

All the clear windows in the church now have elegant scrollwork.

The final touch to the project are the magnificent candlesticks.

They arrived the day after the very last TLM and Solemn High Mass at the parish. Our bishop outlawed the Traditional Latin Mass except at 8 "designated locations."

St Elizabeth is not one of them.

The large wooden crucifix and the Agnus Dei on the altar are from the original 1905 church.

The very modern brick and wood communion rail was replaced by this lovely wooden one --- with gates!

From 2018 until Sept 8, 2022 St Elizabeth's had a weekly Spanish TLM at 11:00 am and
daily TLM's on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 am.

May the ancient liturgy once more be offered publicly in this lovely church someday soon!

Arise, O Lord, and let Thy enemies be scattered, and let
those that hate Thee flee from before Thy Face!

Adoration Chapel at St John the Baptist in Front Royal, VA

This is the original church in Front Royal built in 1883.  When the new church was built, this historic church became the Adoration chapel.  It is used for the Monday and Wednesday TLMs too.

St Peter in Richmond, VA

The oldest church in Richmond, VA was built in 1834.
It served as the 1st cathedral for the bishop until 1906 when the current cathedral was dedicated.

Old St Mary in Fredericksburg, VA

St Mary's was the first Catholic church in Fredericksburg, VA and the entire surrounding area which now has five thriving parishes.  It was built in 1858 and served as a hospital during the Civil War.   Sadly in 1970 that original church was sold in order for them to build their ugly new church.  Later this old church was converted into law offices and apartments.  Now the building is for sale.

Please pray that funds can be raised to rescue this historic old church!

St Elizabeth of Hungary in Colonial Beach, VA

Under the current pastor, this small country parish has undergone a transformation!  Although the parish is over 100 years old, the current church was built in the 1960's.  Since this blog is dedicated to beauty, I cannot show what it looked like before.  The most recent change is the gorgeous new altar and stained glass window that was put in this summer.

New altar

The center portion of the stained glass window picturing the Decent of the Holy Ghost was saved from the original church and incorporated into the current church when it was built.  However it was surrounded by a ghastly green glass all around it over the altar.  In this new window, the Descent is incorporated into a new larger scene and the results are spectacular!

Ready for a Traditional Latin Mass

The exterior of the church was transformed a few years ago.  It now looks like a lovely country church.

Although this parish does not have a regular TLM, the pastor offers a weekly Sunday Mass, Thursday Mass and occasional feast days at the mission church of St Anthony in King George, VA which is under St Elizabeth.  However occasionally there is a TLM here for special feasts.

Since 2014, this parish has the distinction of being the first one in the Arlington Diocese to offer the Traditional Holy Thursday and Good Friday according to the 1962 Liturgical Books since 1970!

St John the Apostle in Leesburg, VA

The altar in this church has an interesting story.  St John's just built this new church a few years ago, but it obtained the magnificent altar from a church in New Jersey which had been closed for years.  It has been made into an altar of repose for this diocesan parish.

Christ the King chapel, Part 2

When this chapel was built in 1994, Christendom College was able to rescue the church furnishings and stained glass windows from the historic Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Winchester, VA when they built their new modern (ie: ugly) church.  What a blessing for the college!
