Not Cool
Sucky when a big company doesn't play nice. I'm pretty certain (because I know it's how I roll) that if you just ask nice and give proper attribution, almost any novice/semi-pro photographer would let you use their work.

Teaser
Editing some photos (apparently PS Elements 10 no longer recognizes NEF Raw, yay extra steps!)
Here's a teaser of the newest addition to the armory.

Daily Dose of Cool
A series of photos of cartridges precisely cut in half.
Half the challenge is figuring out what most of them are (the ones pictured above are the most "normal" of the bunch.)

Sexy
The new Nikon 5200 has hit US shores, and it's pretty neat in my opinion. It seems very similar to my D40, except on optical steroids... I was planning to get a new camera body when I got home from the deployment, so I can continue to take sweet pictures for your veiwing pleasure, and this just may be the one. Plus, the red is sexy.
Little reminder: whenever you click an Amazon add, I get a cut of the sales... which will be put towards said camera purchase. It's a win/win for both of us, and costs you nothing.

More Range Photos
Got some edited before the big lappy got too hot and froze before crashing hard (and a heat advisory was issued about 30 seconds later... heh.) I've got a few more from my camera, so hopefully I'll get those edited later and save them for another post.
Anywho, as I said before, a friend from my Scout Camp days was in town for the day, and wanted to try some of the modern hardware out. So we brought out the 1911, M&P pistols (9mm and .22lr,) Lightweight AR, and the LCP to run some more rounds through it.
Neat action sequence-
Manda tried out the LCP
She fired two shots, and declared it less than great... too long of a trigger and hard to control. Not surprising. She then put a magazine through the 1911, and while it bugged her shoulder, she still preferred it over the LCP. More in detail about that in a later post.
Cleaned up yesterday's photo too...
Of course the AR was a crowd pleaser as usual, what with its light weight and low recoil. Andy was bouncing a bottle around on the berm in a couple shots and was in love.
After getting back in town, we headed over to O'So Brewing's taproom as Andy is a huge beer fan. 40 taps of Wisconsin beer is always a good time.

I need a new camera...
A friend from camp came into town for the day, and we dropped my fast prime lens on his D90 body...
That's straight off the camera there... A few more I need to crop and tweek colors on, but damn. I am jealous.

Who?
Owls, that's who!
On Sunday the park put on a "Live Birds of Prey" presentation, so the newly minted fiancee and I took my grandmother out to see some birds.
In my opinion, they started with the stars of the show and brought the owls out first. I think owls are about the only predator that can give felines a run for their money on purpose-built killing machines. I mean they have special feathers that only exist to silence the airflow around their claws...
In order of size, they had a Northern Saw Whet that was both tiny, and greatly upset about being awake at 3 in the afternoon.
Upping the level in both size and badass looks was the Screech Owl.
Possibly one of the prettiest owls, and quite common around here, the Barred Owl-
And for the show-stealing intimidation in bird form, they had a Great Horned Owl, and he was not at all happy about being out.
It seems that they do the whole "stand up straight" thing when they're calm and relaxed. If they're feeling frisky and mad with something, that's the look you get. Thankfully they're still attracted to the flip on an SLR's mirror, and the people with the birds were kind enough to pause a little longer in front of a "real" camera.
They also had some daytime killers, photos of those tomorrow.

Rusk County Honor the Fallen Ride
This past weekend we attended the Rusk County (WI) Honor the Fallen motorcycle ride. Manda's mom is heavily involved with organizing, so despite not having bikes (not those kind anyway...) we still try to go help out when we can.
The rides started as a fundraiser to build up a scholarship fund in memory of SSG Nathan Vacho. The rides also are in honor of two other Rusk County natives, SSG Patrick Lybert and LcPL Andrew Matus, who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The ride is a 100 mile loop, with two stops, starting and ending at the restaurant owned by Nathan Vacho's parents (small world side-note, his father also happens to be my first CSM.) There's also a breakfast during registration and a dinner after the ride, along with one hell of a raffle. This year we walked away with a microfiber towel, a Streamlight Sidewinder, a large microfiber towel, and a set of ESS CDIs for Manda (which was good, she forgot to bring sunglasses...) Cro managed to walk away with an engraved Ontario Knives Rat 3, ensuring my jealousy for a while.
They also unveiled a Battle Cross monument that will be the first of several monuments in the memorial park.
I blame lack of sleep, but I forgot to write down the name of the group who funded the statue, but this is the first one they've done, and the next one is going to Virginia in memory of the members of the Spec-Ops community down there.
Overall it was a great weekend, with over 320 bikes and a great deal of money raised for a handful of causes.
Despite Manda and I's lack of a motorbike, G&C was still represented.
More bikes after the jump-

Post-Birthday Range Trip
To celebrate MandaFern catching up to me in the birthday count, we hit up the range. Here's a few pics... more as the weekend goes by and I get around to editing.

Doc says the range is safe. |

Doc also brought his M&P9c for the two of us to try out. Consensus, need one with safeties for me, one without for her. |

I decided to beat the crap out of my hands and put 40 rounds of fmj through the J-frame. It was enough for today. |

Photos...
Started to convert a bunch of the .nef raw files from the trip to California last fall into .jpegs so I can actually upload them onto stuff... the big laptop has been cranking away at it for about two and a half hours now, and that's just one folder...

New Year's Eve
I've gotta work overnight, so it's not really hitting me as anything special aside from meaning I'll go through twice as many checks as normal the next couple months from writing the wrong date down...
Thankfully MandaFern rocks and decided to knock out a sweet sweet dinner for me before I head out for the night.
Since it's Wisconsin, cold and snow doesn't mean jack-
She managed to grab some giant freakin' shrimp at a seafood sale at the supermarket yesterday (along with scallops and steak)... and I mean GIANT shrimp-
That's over a pound of shrimp... all six of 'em.
So "Tactical Dinner Pics" Go! (If you're on ARFCOM, you'll understand...)
Pan-seared scallops, grilled Colossal shrimp and steak slathered in saute'd mushrooms and onions with some rosemary baby red potatoes on the side.
Dessert (Tiramisu)-
I am now thoroughly stuffed and not sure how I'm going to make it until 7am... but hey, it was worth it.
See you next year!

Stickman Website Launched
Amazing gun photog and fantastic gear reviewer Stickman has launched an official website.
Right now it's just a simple splash site linking to his Facebook and Flickr account, but it's worth checking out if you like awesome pictures of awesome gear.

Crazy Tech
In preparation for the weekend (primarily after deciding to go to The Rock on Thursday) I decided to pick up another memory card for the camera, and finally take the plunge for a 1TB external hard drive to dedicate to photo storage.
Bare in mind all of my actual traditional photography training was back in the day when a D-SLR was a remote "coming soon" product and 35mm film reigned king. My first "real" camera was a Nikon FM10 and being young and low on cash, I had to be real careful about taking pictures (film = money.)
Now I have a Nikon D40, an FM10 level D-SLR, that uses HCSD memory cards for storage. I can get about 1000 photos on an 8GB card. Even using 36 exposure rolls, that would be 28 rolls of film. 28 rolls of film compressed down into something that takes up about the space of a quarter. I know I'm not that old, but it's still really cool to me. (Really!! I'm under 30, I swear!)
There's even bigger cards out too, up to 32GB, but the 8GBs are available for less than $20, and I'd rather have two 8GB cards instead of one 16GB in case I decide to drop it in a puddle or something. I've got far fewer pictures from Afghanistan due to an equipment failure (shattered the lcd screen on my first digital camera during a convoy...)
The side effect of this is that now with digital storage, for the price of a pack of film, I have the above amount of space on board my camera, and I don't have to pay for developing it. That means I tend to take a lot of pictures. The four "daily photos" last week were out of around 300 taken that range trip alone. If I can get out of Alcatraz Thursday and not have 1000+. I dont' even want to think about what the total will be after the weekend is over, especially with a wedding in the middle of it.
Going on the same note, I got a 1TB Western Digital Passport to dump the photos on. The thing is the size of my wallet, and I carry a small wallet (no wheelbarrows full of cash around here.) I don't even know how many photos that'll hold, but it should take a while to fill it up. All in a space much smaller than what the equivalent in negatives and proof sheets would take.
Lets not even get started on Photoshop compared to an actual darkroom...
