Review: EYE OF THE EAGLE by Sharon Buchbinder!

Eye of the Eagle Tour Graphic

My Review: I love it when the hero and heroine clash. There's nothing better than them wanting to leave each other alone, but unable to because they can't fight that magical attraction. And that's pretty much what we have here - Bert and Phoebe have their own lives to live, their own issues to deal with.. they really don't need to get caught up in each others' drama. But that makes it so much more satisfying when they can't help themselves.

This was a solid paranormal romance. Their abilities weren't an after thought, like "Oh yeah and they have powers," and at the same time - they weren't the whole focus of the story. There was a great balance between the paranormal aspect, the suspense, and the romance. It was a quick read, maybe a little faster than I would have liked since I wanted it to last longer. Overall, definitely a good read, and I'd happily read more.

Cover Lovin': Simple, yet sweet.

Recommendation: Book three, but can be read alone.

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)! A good, quick read. I'll gladly read more of this series!

Review: SHADES OF WICKED by Jeaniene Frost!

Release Date: October 30th, 2018

Type: Paranormal Romance, Series, Book 1, New series, Bad boy, Spin-off series, Good-Bad Guy

My review: I have been a giant fan of Jeaniene Frost since the second Night Huntress book was released, which is when I discovered them. And honestly, I've been waiting for Ian's story since the beginning. But I remember reading a review Jeaniene Frost did, and she said something along the lines of Ian having not grown up enough yet. And honestly, it made sense. But the further the Night Huntress series, and its spin-offs, went, the more you could see Ian developing into who he needed to be to get his own story. And I thought I was ready, but I was so not prepared.

I could not put this down. It is for sure a one-sitting read. In fact, I wasn't even aware how long I had been sitting in one position, eagerly turning pages, until I finished, stood up, and heard all my joints crackle. But I had to know what was going to happen. I loved reading about Ian and Veritas snarking at each other, starting to fall in love, trying to get out of the different scrapes they find themselves in.. It was all wonderful.

This is Jeaniene Frost at her best. She brought everything we loved about her complex and entertaining plots, all the characters we know and love, and mixed in a grumpy older Law Guardian and a snarky-yet-noble scoff-law. I cannot wait for the next book!!

About the Book: In this thrilling new Night Rebel series set in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress world, sexy and ruthless vampire Ian finally meets his match!

The Rule Breaker

Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless…and every shade of wicked. He’s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian’s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he’s never been able to abide by the rules for long.

The Law Maker

Veritas’ normal role is police, judge and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait…well, all’s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hotspots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian’s devil-may-care, roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers that Veritas has shocking secrets of her own. As they’re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, either love or justice will prevail. But each will have devastating consequences…

Cover Lovin': I wish Ian's hair would look redder, but otherwise, I love it!

Recommendation: Can be read without the rest of the Night Huntress world, but some knowledge of it would definitely help.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!!! I knew when Ian finally got his own story that it would be EPIC, and I was so not disappointed! But how am I supposed to wait until the next book?!?!

Review: COURTED BY HER COUGAR by Felicity Heaton! GIVEAWAY included!

New York Times best-selling paranormal romance author Felicity Heaton is here today for the book tour of her new shifter romance release, Courted by her Cougar, the third book in her brand new Cougar Creek Mates Series. Set in her popular Eternal Mates world, Cougar Creek Mates takes you into the deep Canadian wilderness to a secret place that’s home to a cougar shifter pride led by four sexy brothers, each guaranteed to steal your heart and set it racing! With all four books in the series releasing just weeks apart, this is going to be one hot summer.
Check out the book, download it with your Kindle Unlimited subscription if you have one, and be sure to enter the awesome grand giveaway happening at her website!

My Review: Here we have yet another awesome Cougar Creek book! This time, it's Flint's turn to come down with the plague that seems to be running through his family - finding his mate. I will be honest, Flint annoyed me a little when he showed up in the earlier books, but he really grew on me here. I loved his habit of saying the exact opposite of what he meant, and how that just got him further and further into trouble.

Each brother is similar, but yet so distinctly different. I love how Heaton can give me something unique about each one, yet still make sure I get what I love about them - that protectiveness. We also get a glimpse at more of the supernatural world, outside of cougar and bear shifters, and this hint makes me eager for more.

This book had a different tone than the previous two. It seemed to focus more on shifter politics, and less on the sexy times. But I loved seeing more of the rules of the cougar shifters, and to see how hard Flint was willing to fight to claim his mate.

Cover Lovin': Series perfection.

Recommendation: Can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading the previous books first.

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)!! Another awesome Cougar Creek book. I loved Flint, and it was so cool to see more of the supernatural world!

About the Book

Courted by her Cougar (Cougar Creek Mates Shifter Romance Series Book 3)
Felicity Heaton
Madness is sweeping through Cougar Creek, and Flint wants no part of it. The fever has two of his brothers in love already, and Flint is damned if he’s giving up the bachelor life to tie himself to one female, but when a perimeter sweep has him running into an exotic and enthralling beauty who rouses his instincts as a cougar shifter and a male, the hunt is on.
All Yasmin is interested in is making sure her friend, Ivy, is safe, but the alluring black-haired man with a wicked smile she meets on the path to the creek has her thinking about other things. When an incident at Cougar Creek leads to her revealing a secret, and Flint’s persistence pushes her to a rash decision, her entire world is in danger of being turned upside down.
With the gathering in full swing, and males determined to prove their worth to Yasmin, Flint discovers he’s not immune to the madness sweeping through the creek, because he’ll do whatever it takes to claim victory and win Yasmin’s heart… no matter how dangerous it is.

Excerpt
When Rath moved towards his cabin, Flint followed, keeping an eye on Yasmin as she noticed his brother approaching. Her smile faltered a little, but it returned as Rath stepped up onto the deck and offered her a warm one.
And a cold beer.
“Crack me one open too.” Flint parked his ass against the railing to the left of the door of the one and a half storey log cabin and shot Yasmin a charming smile. “So, a doctor, huh?”
Her chocolate eyes lost all warmth as she leaned back in her chair beside Ivy and folded her arms across her chest. “If you’re dreaming up scenarios where I’m wearing my white coat, I recommend you stop now, before you end up disappointed, and possibly sexually frustrated.”
He rolled his shoulders in an easy shrug. “Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been sexually frustrated. I’ll take the risk.”
He was frustrated ninety-nine percent of the time he was at a gathering. He didn’t even find any respite in sleep. The damned females haunted his dreams too, his cougar side so wound up by the urge to mate that he dreamed about what he couldn’t have in reality.
She rolled her eyes at him and turned her cheek, glancing Ivy’s way. “Is he always like this?”
Ivy regarded him with cool hazel eyes, ones that didn’t give away what she was thinking.
He waited, not with bated breath, because whatever opinion she had, he could sway it. Just as he was sure he could sway Yasmin into spending a night or two warming his bed. She wasn’t part of the gathering, which meant she was fair game.
Beautiful fair game at that.
With her olive skin, and lush glossy black waves tumbling down from her loose bun, and those rich earthy eyes that held just a hint of spice, flecks of gold that seemed to shimmer whenever she smiled, or burn hot whenever he pressed a button and her temper flared, she was every inch a goddess before he even took into account her killer curves and breasts that could more than fill his hands.
“I think he’s salivating,” Yasmin muttered nonchalantly to someone, a teasing note of warmth in her gentle voice that convinced him that she was speaking to Ivy. “Does he often drool over women?”
Firm fingers pressing under his chin to snap his mouth closed had him frowning at Rath where he stood in the door of the cabin to his left.
That frown verged on becoming a growl when he realised Yasmin had been speaking with his brother in that warm, light tone.
Rath stared him down, a hint of gold colouring his irises around his pupils that had Flint growing aware of the change in his own irises and the pure undiluted anger that flowed through his veins, pushing him to challenge his brother.
Over Yasmin.
He shook off the urge to fight and snagged the brown tall-neck bottle from his brother.
“Perhaps he’s hormonal? Pent up?” Yasmin cast another teasing glance at him before looking to Ivy and then Rath. “It’s my official diagnosis as a doctor that this is a case of blue balls.”
He shot Rath daggers, warning him not to rise to the bait as he so clearly wanted.
“There are plenty of women in the area. You could run along to take care of business. I’m sure we won’t miss you.” Yasmin unfolded her arms, and if she was going to shoo him away, he was going to make her regret it.
“Not interested.” He crossed his left arm over his chest, gripped his side and frowned as he swigged his beer. It was still early, the sun not close to setting yet, but damn, he needed the drink, craved the crisp coldness and the hot slide of it down his throat.
She chuckled at that, and he turned his glare on her.
She instantly fell silent.
He couldn’t tell whether it was because she regretted her words, or because his eyes were gold now, a flare of emerald emerging around his pupils as his cougar side got the better of him, his temper stoked by the irritating way she seemed to see straight through him.
Or maybe it was the way their eyes locked.
He couldn’t look away, fell into the deep, soulful brown pools of hers, drawn into them in a way he had never experienced before.
As if she had cast a spell on him.
He had seen plenty of beautiful women, had bedded most of them, but something about Yasmin had him losing himself whenever his eyes found hers, or entranced by her whenever she moved. Gods, she was graceful. Every action she made was fluid and serene, made somehow beautiful by her.
Even when she broke eye contact and lifted her beer to her rosy full lips. The way she brought her arm up, the tilt of her head, the delicate movement of her throat as she swallowed.
Damn, she was grace embodied.
A fucking goddess.
Rath cleared his throat, jolting Flint back to the world.
“I should thank you for teaching Ivy how to handle any problems that might arise when she’s alone on an expedition,” his older brother said, capturing Yasmin’s focus. Even the way she swung her gaze around and up to Rath’s face was full of grace. Rath saluted her with his beer. “It certainly helped me.”
“Ivy is resourceful. I’m sure she would have been able to help you without my training.” Yasmin glanced at her friend.
Was she graceful in everything she did? She wouldn’t even take the praise Rath had offered, had deflected it back on Ivy, as if she didn’t want his brother’s gratitude.
“I know a little about field medicine, but I wouldn’t say no to learning more.” Flint felt her gaze landing on his as a hot shiver that tripped down his spine, sending warmth spreading through him.
“You wouldn’t say no to much, I think,” she retorted and he frowned at that.
She had been off with him since the woods, had changed markedly from one moment to the next, and he wasn’t sure what he had done to deserve it. He racked his brain, trying to recall everything he had said to her so she could find out what had caused her to lose all the warmth she had shown him when he had been trying to get her to leave.
And what had made her think he was some sort of pent up, sex starved male on the prowl to get his hands on her fine ass.
Which he was, but she didn’t need to paint him with that brush for all to see.
“Listen, Doc,” he started, but Ivy spoke over him.
“Yasmin, I’d love to learn more while you’re here. I know you, and you probably desperately need a vacation that you pretend you don’t, but I’d really appreciate it. Please?” Ivy clutched her friend’s hand, her smile bright and dazzling, and if Yasmin said no to that little angel, she was a cold-hearted bitch.
“Of course.” Yasmin’s smile lit up the world, sent a pleasant light sort of heat spiralling through him and had him losing grip on reality again as he slipped back under her spell.
She had a smile that could fell the hardest of males.
The Devil himself wouldn’t stand a chance against her.
“Can I get in on those lessons?” Rath piped up and Flint barely bit back the growl that rumbled up his throat.
There his brother went again, trying to get close to Yasmin.
Wasn’t that his job?
His brother had asked him to do the recon work on her, and now he was trying to butt in and Flint wasn’t going to take it.
“We could do a group thing.” He regretted it the moment he said it.
Yasmin turned wide eyes on him, her horror clear in them, and Ivy looked unsure whether to be as horrified as her friend or laugh at his plight as he scrubbed a hand over his unruly black hair and frantically back-peddled.
“Not an orgy… because that would be really wrong… I mean… Rath is my brother for a start.” He glanced at Rath and caught the flare of aggression he had sensed in him shining in his eyes too. Rath curled his hands into tight fists at his sides, and Flint held his up, palms facing him as he leaned back. “Ivy is all yours, Man. I’m not interested… I meant like a group lesson… I really do want to learn more about field medicine.”
Yasmin looked as if she was going to deny him again.
So he played his ace.
“I run a tour guide company up north, in a very remote area. It would be useful for me to know how to handle any incidents that might occur. I mean, bears can be dangerous and while I haven’t had anyone attacked yet, who knows when it might happen?” He grinned inside as her face softened. If playing on the compassionate side of her that had probably led to her choosing a career in medicine, and had led to her teaching her close friend how to take care of any wounds she might end up with in the wild, made him a bastard, then he was a bastard of the highest order. He could practically see her will crumbling as he continued, “I’ve had to treat a few sprains and stings, but what if someone is attacked by a bear? I don’t know how to handle that. If I can’t do all I can to help them, the person would probably die before the air ambulance could reach us.”
“Fine, I’ll teach you.” She tilted her chin up, her tone losing its softness as she held his gaze. “But the second you try flirting with me over a suture kit or making an innuendo about… well… anything… you’re out.”
Harsh, and not fair.
No way he could stop himself from flirting with her, not over a suture kit and not over anything. He wanted her, and she knew it. What she was asking of him, it was impossible. He couldn’t just switch off this attraction he felt to her, the burning she had ignited the moment she had stood up to him in the woods, revealing a fiery side of her that had made his instincts label her as a challenge.
He liked a good challenge.
Something told him that Yasmin would be the most difficult, most rewarding challenge he had ever known.
That only made him want her even more.
So he crossed his heart like a good boy, just so he could get closer to her.
Not because he wanted to spy on her for his brother.
But because he needed to be close to her, needed to do everything in his power, pulling out all the stops, until she gave in to him.

Review: FORBIDDEN CLAIM by R.L. Kenderson!

My Review: This is a new to me author, and I'm so glad I got the chance to check her out! I loved the paranormal world Kenderson created, not just the creatures that inhabit it, but how their packs/prides/etc work. I'll have to eventually go back and read the first few books to see how it all got started.

There was a lot going on in this book. Despite the description talking only about Zane and Isabelle, other couples are trying to maneuver the complicated shifter daring world right along with them. And I liked reading their story just as much as the main couple. There was a lot of focus on the romance, but the author didn't short us on the drama - there's plenty to go around! The villain was truly evil, and I loved to hate him, which made me that much more eager to keep reading to see whether he would get his comeuppance.

Highly recommended for paranormal romance lovers! As I said, I'll be checking out the rest of the series for sure!

Cover Lovin': Classic!

Recommendation: Can be read as a stand alone, but there are a lot of recurring characters, so some background info might be useful.

Final rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)!! An awesome read that had me eagerly anticipating what was going to happen next!

About R.L. Kenderson:

R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name. Renae has always loved reading, and in third grade, she wrote her first poem where she learned she might have a knack for this writing thing. Lara remembers sneaking her grandmother’s Harlequin novels when she was probably too young to be reading them, and since then, she knew she wanted to write her own. When they met in college, they bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. What really spiced up their friendship was when Lara introduced Renae to romance novels. When they discovered their first vampire romance, they knew there would always be a special place in their hearts for paranormal romance. After being unable to find certain storylines and characteristics they wanted to read about in the hundreds of books they consumed, they decided to write their own. One lives in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and the other in the Kansas City area where they’re a sonographer/stay-at-home mom/wife and pharmacist/mother by day, and together they’re a sexy author by night. My Review: If you're worried about the sophomore slump when it comes to a good series.. then you need to give Felicity Heaton a shot, because her books are always quality! I loved this one just as much as the first book. I thought Rath was sexy, but Storm might be even better! I appreciated his growly nature, and I think my favorite part was just how much he enjoyed needling Gabi. It was just so amusing to watch them intentionally tick each other off.

I wasn't sure how well the drama would go in this book, considering it seemed like book one was crazy intense - how could this possibly match up? But it keeps the excitement going, trust me. There was drama, misunderstandings, emotions, and sexytimes - everything a good romance needs to make it something spectacular. What I loved the most about this book, is that I can really see these two falling in love and being happy together. And boy, do I wish I had a Storm of my very own.

Book three can't come fast enough!

Cover Lovin': Matches the series perfectly.

Recommendation: Can technically be read as a stand alone, but knowledge of what happened in book 1 is definitely helpful!

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!! Another awesome Cougar Creek Mates book! If books 1 and 2 are any indication, the next one will also be off-the-charts awesome... and I can't wait!

About the Book

Captured by her Cougar (Cougar Creek Mates Shifter Romance Series Book 2)
Felicity Heaton
In the wake of an Archangel attack on Cougar Creek, Storm is seething with a need for revenge against the hunter organisation and the key to it might be the petite blonde mortal he’s locked in his cabin, one he’s determined to make sing for him. Only the beauty has a fiery temperament to match his own, and the more time he spends with her, the more she stokes a fire inside him. One that fills him with a startling and undeniable need to make her sing in another way—in his arms.
Gabriella isn’t going to take her captivity lying down. She’s going to give the pig-headed brute holding her against her will hell until he finally believes she’s innocent. He might be a cougar shifter, but she isn’t afraid of him. Or at least she isn’t afraid of what he is. The way he affects her, the flames that lick through her whenever they’re close, terrifies her though, because the longer she’s around the towering sexy-as-sin shifter, the hotter that fire blazes, and it’s only a matter of time before it burns away all her restraint.
With the mating heat and the attack bringing cougars back to the creek, Gabriella is a complication Storm doesn’t need, but she’s one that he wants… because she might just be his one true mate.

Excerpt
Storm slid his gaze back towards the door.
Towards Gabriella.
She groaned and moved again, and this time, it sounded more like a whimper. He focused. Her heartrate was off the scale too. Having a nightmare?
He didn’t give a damn if she was.
Really didn’t.
Storm scrubbed a hand over his mouth. Fuck, it had been a mistake to set up his cabin as her cage. Sure, it had been the right thing, because it would keep her safe from the other males coming to the area and it was easier for him to keep an eye on her in his own home.
But the whole place smelled of her already.
Her scent was embedded in everything, felt as if it was seared right into his soul.
Sunshine, sand and surf, with a hint of something tropical.
He snagged the red comforter from the couch, brought it to his nose and inhaled, and muttered a ripe curse as it smelled of her.
And damn, she smelled good.
Had his instincts as a male firing on all cylinders.
He growled and hurled it away from him as he stalked to the front door of the cabin, intent on leaving.
He froze there, his senses immediately locking on her.
Gabriella.
What had happened to Rath was her fault.
That refused to stick and he wanted to growl again, a need to blame her so he could direct some of the anger burning inside him at her twisting him into knots inside. He didn’t feel it though, not when it came to her.
He thought about Alexander, and sure enough, the blame stuck to him like super glue, had his anger flaring hot in his veins all over again.
He tried blaming her for what had happened to his parents, and to him, all those decades ago. It refused to stick too.
“Fuck,” Storm muttered and strode to the small white refrigerator beneath the kitchen counter, one that was rapidly warming now the power was out.
He yanked it open, grabbed a beer and slammed it shut again.
He cracked the brown bottle open, chugged the contents so fast he almost choked on them as he glared at the darkening world outside through the window, and didn’t flinch as he tossed the empty in the sink and it smashed.
Gabriella gasped.
Her fear shot through him.
Storm looked at the broken glass in the metal sink, and then over his left shoulder at the bedroom door.
He huffed as he strode to the main door of the cabin, tugged it open and slammed it behind him. He stepped off the raised covered deck that surrounded three sides of his single-storey cabin, and stormed along the worn path towards the clearing to his right. His fingers curled into fists and then flexed, his anger getting the better of him as he took long strides towards the river, the fading warmth of day washing over his bare chest.
He breathed hard, each one laboured as the need to burn off some energy returned, had him wound tight and his cougar side agitated, almost to the point of frenzied.
Two males came out of the thick woods to his right, stepping into the clearing, and he bared fangs at them and growled, hungry for a fight.
The younger males gave him a wide berth though, so all he could do was pace the stony bank of the river as the sun began to set.
He wasn’t sure how long he strode back and forth across the grass, his eyes on it as he fought to quell the urge to shift and start a fight.
When he felt eyes on him, it was darker, but his vision adjusted the second he lifted his head and fixed his gaze on the male approaching him.
Rath.
His oldest brother raked fingers through his thick brown hair, his grey eyes guarded.
“What are you doing pacing the riverbank?” Rath’s deep voice rolled over him, as smooth and calm as the water that raced over the rocks behind Storm.
He flashed fangs at Rath. “Pacing. What the fuck does it look like I’m doing? You have a problem with me pacing?”
“I have a problem when it leads to you being aggressive towards others.”
“Aggressive?” Storm snorted and took a hard step towards his brother, getting in his face. “You haven’t seen me aggressive.”
“I have.” Rath’s calm tone grated, had Storm wanting to grab him and do something. Rattle him. Shake him until he bit. “I take it things aren’t going well with Gabriella?”
Storm bared his teeth again at the mention of her name. “Little Bird will sing.”
Rath arched a dark eyebrow at that, but didn’t pick him up on the nickname he had given her. “Maybe you need to go back to your cabin and cool off.”
“Maybe you need to get the fuck out of my face?” Storm took another hard step forwards, bringing himself chest to chest with his brother.
Rath just sighed. “I’m not going to fight you, so quit trying to make it happen.”
Storm felt like a dick as Rath took a casual step backwards, placing some distance between them. Threatening his brother when he was injured? What the fuck was wrong with him?
He stared at Rath’s right shoulder, seeing beyond the dark fleece he wore to the wound beneath.
An injury her brother had given him.
He growled and looked towards his cabin, seething with a need to return to her and do something to make her talk.
“She hasn’t said anything at all?” Rath’s measured tone, so calm and even, soothed him and he clawed back some control over his mood, enough that he could progress from merely growling and snapping at his brother to having a conversation.
“She asked about your condition, and she wants to see Ivy.” Storm didn’t take his eyes off his cabin.
“Ivy mentioned that Gabriella was the one who secured her initial funding from her brother, and they get along.”
So Little Bird hadn’t been lying about that then.
Rath continued, “Maybe it’s a good idea that Ivy speaks with her. I’ll go with her.”
Storm growled at that, a low vicious one that echoed around the forest and had a few birds flying their roosts.
Because no damned way he was letting Rath take over things with his Little Bird.
If she was going to sing for anyone, it was going to be for him.
He pushed past his brother, his words a dark snarl in the fading light, filled with purpose and determination.
“I’ll get her talking.”

Review: TOUCH OF ICE by Mary Auclair!

Release Date: January 17th, 2018

About the Book: He is as cold as ice. She is the salvation that will melt his heart.

When Endora is faced with her daughter’s terminal illness, she takes the only chance she’s got. She braves the potential risks and signs a mating contract with the Delradon Draekon Lords, intent on using the payment to buy the aliens’ cure to save her daughter’s life.

Lord Aldric Darragon rules over his land with an iron fist until one day the only woman who is genetically compatible with him agrees to his offer of mating. As his all-consuming passion for Endora explodes, an ancient threat looms heavy over humans and Delradons alike. With the lives of everyone he cares about hanging in the balance, Aldric has to fight the demons of his past if he wants to defeat the enemies of the present.

Publisher’s Note: This gripping sci-fi alien romance has it all: dragons, passion and tension. It also contains explicit themes and is intended for adults only.

My Review: Oh, this was so, so good! I'll be honest, when I decided to read this, I figured it would be a fun, easy, mindless read. And it was so much better than I could have ever guessed! Instead of a fun but overall meaningless read, I got something so special. Touch of Ice is beautifully written. This author has created a fascinating world that I cannot wait to see more of.

I read this in two sittings, and it would have been less if I didn't have to work. I loved Aldric and Endora's relationship.. and for that matter, I loved Aldric and Rhyl's relationship! I desperately want to know more about the dragons, and their relationship with their... not human.. alien, I guess? Also, I don't want to give anything away - but the ultimate villain is epic. Scary, but such a good evil.

Cover Lovin': Stunning!

Recommendation: Book one, so no prior knowledge necessary!

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!!! This was such a great book. A wonderful fantasy romance!

Exclusive Excerpt:

ISABELLE RAND KISSED her boyfriend, Bram, on the cheek and exited his vehicle. As she walked to the front of the school, she took a deep breath. When she reached the doors, she turned around and waved at Bram, knowing he wouldn’t leave until he saw her walk into the building. She made no move to look and see if he drove away as she walked down the hall to her classroom. But, instead of going to the end of the corridor, she took a right into the school’s office. “He’s gone,” her coworker, Jessica, said. Isabelle breathed a sigh of relief, but it didn’t last long. She was only a fourth of the way through her plan. Two more teachers, Danni and Alice, with their arms full, came from the back office area along with their principal, Noah. Danni and Alice dropped the huge, mismatched luggage at Isabelle’s feet. “Here are most of your clothes,” Danni told her. “And here are the rest of your clothes and toiletries,” Alice said. Jessica came over from where she’d been watching the window and took Isabelle’s hand, placing a set of car keys in it. “Here’s your new car. It’s nothing great, but it’s bought and paid for.” “Give me the keys,” Noah said. “I’ll pull the car around.” Isabelle handed them over. Noah looked at Jessica. “It’s a black Kia,” she told him. Isabelle swallowed hard as she tried not to cry. “I don’t know what I’d do without you guys.” Jessica hugged Isabelle first. “This is what friends do for each other.” “Help them go on the run like a criminal in the night?” Isabelle joked as the first tear fell. Alice embraced Isabelle next. When she pulled away, she squeezed Isabelle’s arms. “No, we’re helping you escape an abusive boyfriend who doesn’t deserve to call you his.” Isabelle smiled as best she could. Danni enveloped Isabelle last. “I’m scared,” Isabelle said in her friend’s ear. Danni drew away and looked into Isabelle’s eyes. “I know. I would be scared, too. But we’ve been planning this for a month. Minneapolis is less than two hours away. You will make it before he even knows you’re gone.” “Honey, are you sure you don’t want to go to a shelter? Are you sure your friends in Minneapolis can keep you safe?” Alice, twenty years Isabelle’s senior, asked. There was no way Isabelle could tell these wonderful humans that she was going to the safest place in the world for her. Not only was Damien her friend, but he was also the alpha of the Minnesota Wolf Pack. And her other friends whom she was seeking solace from were the wolf-shifter sentinels. Once she told Damien about Bram, he would do everything to help her. And Bram wouldn’t dare take on the alpha of their pack. Not if he wanted to live to tell about it. “I’m absolutely sure. I just need to get there.” “Okay, honey. We trust your decision.” “We’d better go. I’m sure Noah has pulled the car to the side door by now.” Isabelle took one of the handles to wheel the bag outside, and Danni took the other. Once they walked outside, Noah popped open the trunk and then got out of Isabelle’s new car. The bags were loaded into the trunk, and then Noah hugged Isabelle. When he stepped away, he held out his hand. “Phone.” “What?” With his other hand, he reached into his back pocket. “Your phone.” “Oh. Yeah. I almost forgot.” The four of them had discussed the unlikelihood of Bram tracking her phone since he wasn’t on her plan, but they didn’t think it was a risk she should take. Plus, she didn’t want to deal with the numerous phone calls he was bound to make once he realized she was gone. She opened her purse and took out her phone. With a silent good-bye, she handed it over, and Noah gave her a new prepaid phone. “I programmed all our numbers into it, just in case you need anything. And please let us know when you make it there safely.” “I will.” She looked around at her friends. “I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you.” “I do,” Alice said. “You can repay us by getting yourself to safety and staying there.” Isabelle smiled. “I will. I promise.” “You’d better.” Isabelle walked around to the driver’s side of her new car but stopped before getting in. She’d almost forgotten. “Please be careful. Bram is not a good guy, and he’s not what he seems. He’s very strong and very dangerous.” She wished she could come out and warn them that Bram was a wolf-shifter, stronger than all of them combined, and capable of turning into a wild animal that could rip them to shreds. But she couldn’t. They were her friends, but she couldn’t give away her species. “Honey, please don’t concern yourself with us. It’s a teacher in-service today, so no students to worry about, and we’ll just tell everyone else you called in sick. We know nothing.” Noah waved the phone. “As soon as you leave, I’m going to call my office with your phone. It’ll show up on your statement that you called in. Like Alice said, don’t worry about us.” Isabelle closed her eyes. “You know that’s never going to happen. But I will try to worry less. As long as you promise to be careful.” “We promise,” Alice said for all of them. And, with one last good-bye, Isabelle took off for Minneapolis…and for freedom.

About R.L. Kenderson:

They communicate through phone, email, and whole lot of messaging. You can find them at http://www.rlkenderson.com, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Goodreads.
